1.3 Introduction
COM Express™ is an open specification from PICMG (PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturer
Group). It is a module concept to bring PCI Express and other newer technologies like SATA,
USB 3.0 and different display interfaces onto a COM (Computer On Module).

MSC C10-MB-EV User Manual
6 / 42
A COM Express™ module is plugged onto an application-specific base board and offers a
migration path to future CPU technologies as they become available. Utilizing different form
factors, COM Express™ can be used for deeply embedded solutions all the way up to high
performance platforms.
For evaluation and design-in of the COM Express™ modules MSC offers evaluation
baseboards and development motherboards providing the interface infrastructure for the COM
Express™ module using PC type connectors for external access.
Currently four module sizes are defined in the COM Express Specification 2.1: the Mini Module,
the Compact Module, the Basic Module and the Extended Module. The main difference
between them is the over-all physical size and the performance envelope supported.
All module sizes of the same type use the same connectors and pin-outs and utilize several
common mounting hole positions. This level of compatibility permits a carrier board designed to
accommodate an Extended Module to also support a Basic or Compact Module.
Up to 440 pins are available between COM Express™ modules and the Carrier Board.
To enhance interoperability between COM Express™ modules and Carrier Boards, seven
common signaling configurations (Pin-out Types) have been defined to ease system integration.

4.2 PCI Express Lanes
Four PCIe lanes are defined at the Type10 COM Express module.
Three PCIe lanes are fixed routed to the PCIe x16 connector.
The PCIe Lane 3 can be routed to the PCIe x16 connector or to the PCI Express Mini Card
slot card slot. When J2001 is open PCIe x16 slot is selected. PCI Express Mini Card slot is
selected when J2001 is set. With setting J2002 the PCIe Mini Card slot can be set write
protected.
Note: The number of PCIe lanes available will depend on the COM Express module used –
not all modules can support 4 PCIe lanes.
4.3 PCI e x16 Slot
A PCIe x16 slot is provided for insertion of PCIe cards to a maximum of 4 PCIe lanes.

(X1101) and 12V fan power are switched off, when the power input is not in the range of
11V to 13V. In that case, you can feed 12V from an external power source at X1603 pin
4 to supply these connectors with power.

4.4 PCI Express Mini Card
PCIe Lane 3 and the signals from USB port 6 switch to this slot if J2001 is set.
If the Mini Card slot is selected, PCIe Lane 3 at X2701 and USB port 6 at X1902 are no
longer useable. With the W_DISABLE# jumper J2002 the card slot can be set write
protected.

Table 4 Pin-out embedded Display Port
The supply voltage of the eDP logic and the eDP backlight can be adjusted with jumper JP1101 and
JP1102. The according position is printed on the PCB. Refer to chapter 4.7 LVDS-Interface.
2) Note: The power at 12V PCIe, VCC_LCD (X1601), VCC_BL_EDP (X1602), VCC_BL (X1101)
and 12V fan power are switched off, when the power input is not in the range of 11V to 13V. In
that case, you can feed 12V from an external power source at X1603 pin 4 to supply these
connectors with power.
