General Operation
1. Readthis operator'smanual carefullyinits entiretybefore
attemptingtoassemblethismachine.Read,understand,
andfollowall instructionsonthe machineandin the
manual(s) beforeoperation.Becompletelyfamiliarwith
thecontrolsandthe properuseofthis machinebefore
operatingit. Keepthis manualin asafeplaceforfuture
andregularreferenceandfor orderingreplacementparts.
2. Thismachineisa precisionpieceof powerequipment,
nota plaything.Therefore,exerciseextremecautionat all
times.Yourunithas beendesignedto performonejob: to
mowgrass.Do notuseit for anyotherpurpose.
3. Neverallow childrenunder 14yearsoldto operatethis
machine.Children14yearsoldandovershouldreadand
understandthe instructionsinthismanualandshould
betrainedand supervisedbya parent.Onlyresponsible
individualswhoarefamiliarwiththeserulesofsafe
operationshouldbeallowedto usethismachine.
4. Thoroughlyinspectthe areawherethe equipmentisto
beused.Removeall stones,sticks,wire,bones,toysand
otherforeignobjectswhichcouldbetrippedoveror picked
upandthrownbythe blade.Thrownobjectscancause
seriouspersonalinjury.Planyourmowingpatternto avoid
dischargeof materialtowardroads,sidewalks,bystanders
andthe like.Also,avoiddischargingmaterialagainsta
wallorobstructionwhichmaycausedischargedmaterial
toricochetbacktowardtheoperator.
5. Tohelpavoidbladecontactorathrownobjectinjury,
stayinthe operatorzonebehindthe handlesandkeep
children,bystanders,helpersand petsatleast75feet
fromthe mowerwhileit isin operation.Stopmachineif
anyoneentersthe area.
6. Alwayswearsafetyglassesor safetygogglesduring
operationandwhileperforminganadjustmentor repair
toprotectyoureyes.Thrownobjectswhichricochetcan
causeseriousinjurytothe eyes.
7. Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesand close-fitting
slacksandshirts.Shirtsand pantsthatcoverthe arms
and legsandsteel-toedshoesarerecommended.Never
operatethismachinein barefeet, sandals,slipperyor light
weight(e.g.canvas)shoes.
8. Do notputhandsorfeet nearrotatingpartsor underthe
cuttingdeck.Contactwiththe bladecanamputatehands
andfeet.
9. Amissingor damageddischargecovercancause blade
contactor thrownobject injuries.
10.Manyinjuriesoccurasa resultofthe mowerbeingpulled
overthefootduringafall causedby slippingor tripping.
Do notholdontothe mowerifyouarefalling;releasethe
handleimmediately.
11.Neverpullthe mowerbacktowardyouwhileyouare
walking.If youmustbackthe mowerawayfromawallor
obstructionfirstlookdownand behindtoavoidtripping
andthenfollowthesesteps:
a. Stepbackfromthe mowertofullyextendyourarms.
b. Besureyouarewellbalancedwithsurefooting.
c. Pullthe mowerbackslowly,no morethanhalfway
towardyou.
d. Repeatthesestepsasneeded.
12.Do notoperatethe mowerwhileunderthe influenceof
alcoholordrugs.
13.Do notengagetheself-propelledmechanismon unitsso
equippedwhilestartingengine.
14.Thebladecontrolhandleisa safetydevice.Neverattempt
tobypassitsoperation.Doingso makesthe safetydevice
inoperativeandmayresultin personalinjurythrough
contactwiththe rotatingblade.Thebladecontrolhandle
mustoperateeasily in bothdirectionsandautomatically
returntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
15.Neveroperatethe mowerinwetgrass.Alwaysbesureof
yourfooting. A slipand fall cancauseseriouspersonal
injury.If youfeelyouarelosingyourfooting,releasethe
bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyand the bladewillstop
rotatingwithinthreeseconds.
16.Mowonlyin daylightor in goodartificial light.Walk,never
run.Stopthe bladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksor
roads.
17.Iftheequipmentshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe
engineand checkimmediatelyforthe cause.Vibrationis
generallya warningoftrouble.
18.Shutthe engineoff andwaituntilthe bladecomesto
acompletestopbeforeremovingthe grasscatcheror
uncloggingthe chute.Thecuttingbladecontinuesto rotate
fora fewsecondsafterthe engineisshutoff. Neverplace
anypartofthe bodyinthe bladeareauntilyou aresurethe
bladehasstoppedrotating.
19.Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrailshield,discharge
cover,grasscatcher,bladecontrolhandleor othersafety
protectivedevicesin placeandworking.Neveroperate
mowerwithdamagedsafetydevices.Failureto doso,can
resultinpersonalinjury.
20.Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancauseaburn.Do
nottouch.
21.Onlyusepartsandaccessoriesmadeforthismachineby
the manufacturer.Failuretodo socan resultinpersonal
injury.
22.If situationsoccurwhich arenotcoveredin this manual,use
careandgoodjudgment. Callcustomerassistancefor the
nameofyournearestservicingdealer.
Slope Operation
Slopesarea majorfactor relatedtoslip andfall accidentswhich
canresultinsevereinjury.Operationon slopesrequiresextra
caution.Ifyoufeel uneasyona slope,do notmowit.Foryour
safety,usethe slopegaugeincludedaspartofthis manualto
measureslopesbeforeoperatingthis uniton a slopedor hilly
area.Ifthe slopeisgreaterthan15degrees,donot mowit.

Do:
1. Mowacrossthe faceofslopes;neverup anddown.
Exerciseextremecautionwhenchangingdirectionon
slopes.
2. Watchfor holes,ruts,rocks, hiddenobjects,or bumpswhich
can causeyouto slipor trip. Tallgrasscanhideobstacles.
3. Alwaysbesure ofyourfooting.A slip andfall cancause
seriouspersonalinjury.If youfeelyouarelosingyour
balance,releasethe bladecontrolhandleimmediately,and
the bladewill stoprotatingwithin3seconds.
Do Not:
I. Donot mowneardrop-offs,ditchesorembankments,you
could loseyourfootingorbalance.
2. Donot mowslopesgreaterthan 15degreesasshownon
the slopegauge.
3. Donot mowon wetgrass.Unstablefootingcouldcause
slipping.
Children
Tragicaccidentscanoccurifthe operatorisnot alertto the
presenceofchildren.Childrenare oftenattractedtothe mower
and the mowingactivity.Theydo notunderstandthe dangers.
Neverassumethatchildrenwillremainwhereyou lastsaw
them.
1. Keepchildrenout ofthe mowingareaand underthewatch-
ful careofa responsibleadultotherthantheoperator.
2. Bealertandturnmoweroff if a childentersthe area.
3. Beforeand while movingbackwards,lookbehindand down
forsmallchildren.
4. Useextremecarewhenapproachingblindcorners,
doorways,shrubs,trees,or otherobjectsthat mayobscure
yourvisionof a childwhomayrunintothe mower.
5. Keepchildrenawayfrom hotor runningengines.Theycan
suffer burnsfroma hotmuffler.
6. Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsoldto operateapower
mower.Children14yearsoldandovershouldreadand
understandthe operationinstructionsand safetyrules in
this manualandshouldbetrainedandsupervisedby a
parent.
Service
Safe Handling Of Gasoline:
1. Toavoidpersonalinjury orpropertydamageuseextreme
care inhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammable
andthevaporsareexplosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan
occurwhengasolineisspilledonyourselforyourclothes
whichcanignite.
2. Washyourskin andchangeclothesimmediately.
3. Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.
4. Neverfillcontainersinsideavehicleoron a truckor trailer
bedwitha plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthe
groundawayfromyourvehiclebeforefilling.
5. Removegas-poweredequipmentfromthe truckortrailer
and refuelit onthe ground.If thisis notpossible,then refuel
suchequipmentonatrailerwitha portablecontainer,rather
thanfroma gasolinedispensernozzle.
6. Keepthe nozzlein contactwiththe rimofthefueltank or
containeropeningat alltimesuntilfuelingis complete.Do
notusea nozzlelock-opendevice.
7. Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersourcesof
ignition.
8. Neverfuel machineindoorsbecauseflammablevapors
willaccumulateinthe area.
9. Neverremovegascap oradd fuelwhilethe engineis
hotor running. Allowengineto coolatleasttwo minutes
beforerefueling.
10.Neveroverfillfueltank. Filltankto nomorethanY2inch
belowbottomoffiller neckto provideforfuelexpansion.
11.Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.
12.Ifgasolineis spilled,wipeitoff theengineand equipment.
Moveunittoanotherarea.Wait5minutesbeforestarting
theengine.
13.Neverstorethe machineorfuel containernearanopen
flame,sparkor pilotlightasonawaterheater,space
heater,furnace,clothesdryeror othergasappliances.
14.Toreducefire hazard,keepmowerfreeofgrass,leaves,
orother debrisbuild-up.Cleanupoil orfuelspillageand
removeanyfuel soakeddebris.
15.Allowamowertocoolat least5 minutesbeforestoring.
General Service:
1. Neverrunan engineindoorsor in a poorlyventilatedarea.
Engineexhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorless
anddeadlygas.
2. Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertainthe
bladeandallmovingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe
sparkplugwireandgroundagainstthe engineto prevent
unintendedstarting.
3. Checkthe bladeand enginemountingboltsatfrequent
intervalsfor propertightness.Also,visuallyinspectblade
fordamage(e.g.,bent,cracked,worn)Replacebladewith
theoriginalequipmentmanufacture's(O.E.M.)bladeonly,
listedinthismanual."Useofpartswhichdo notmeetthe
originalequipmentspecificationsmayleadtoimproper
performanceand compromisesafety!"
4. Mowerbladesaresharpandcan cut.Wrapthe bladeor
weargloves,anduseextracautionwhenservicingthem.
5. Keepall nuts,bolts,and screwstightto besurethe
equipmentis insafeworkingcondition.
6. Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproper
operationregularly.
7. Afterstrikinga foreignobject,stopthe engine,discon-
nectthe sparkplugwireand groundagainstthe engine.
Thoroughlyinspectthe mowerforanydamage.Repairthe
damagebeforestartingand operatingthe mower.
8. Neverattemptto makeawheelor cuttingheightadjust-
mentwhilethe engineisrunning.
9. Grasscatchercomponents,dischargecover,andtrail
shieldaresubjecttowear anddamagewhichcould
exposemovingpartsor allowobjectstobethrown.For
safetyprotection,frequentlycheckcomponentsand re-
placeimmediatelywithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's
(O.E.M.)partsonly,listedin this manual."Useof parts

Before Starting
1. Servicetheenginewithgasolineandoil asinstructed
in theseparateenginemanual.
2. Attachsparkplugwireto sparkplug. If unitis
equippedwitha rubberbootovertheend ofthespark
plugwire,makecertainthemetalloopon theend of
thesparkplugwire(insidetherubberboot)isfastened
securelyoverthemetaltipon thesparkplug.
To Start Engine
1. If yourunitisequippedwitha primer,primeengineas
instructedin theseparateenginemanualpackedwith
yourunit.
2. Standingbehindtheunit,depressthe bladecontrol
handleandholditagainsttheupperhandleasshown
in Figure9.
3. Graspthestarterhandleas shownandpullslowly
untilresistanceis felt,thenpullrapidlyto startengine
andavoidkickback.Returnit slowlytothe ropeguide.

ToStopEngine
1. Releasethebladecontrolhandletostoptheengine
and blade.
_ WARNING: The blade continues
to rotate for a few seconds after
the engine isshut off.
2. Disconnectandgroundthesparkplugwireas
instructedintheseparateenginemanualtoprevent
accidentalstartingwhileequipmentisunattended.
UsingYour Lawn Mower
,_ WARNING: Never operate your
mower without either the rear
door or the entire grass catcher
assembly firmly secured.
Besurethelawnis clearof stones,sticks,wire,or other
objectswhichcoulddamagethelawnmowerorthe
engine.Suchobjectscouldbeaccidentlythrownbythe
mowerin anydirectionandcauseseriouspersonalinjury
totheoperatorandothers.
WARNING: if you strike a foreign
object, stop the engine. Remove
wire from the spark plug, thor-
oughly inspectthe mower for any
damage, and repair the damage
before restarting and operating
the mower. Extensive vibration
of the mower during operation is
an indicationof damage. The unit
should be promptly inspected
and repaired.
Operating Tips
1. Forbestresultsandeffectivemulching,do notcutwet
grass.
2. Newgrass,thickgrass,or wetgrassmayrequirea
narrowercut.
3. Fora healthierlawn,nevercutoff morethanone-third
ofthetotallengthofthegrass.
4. Yourlawnshouldbe cutin thefallas longasthere
is growth.
5. Adjustgroundspeedaccordingtoconditionof lawn.
6. Ifthegrasshasbeenallowedtogrowin excessof4
inches,mulchingisnotrecommended.Mowusing
thegrasscatcherto reducethegrassheightto3-1/4
inchesorlessbeforemulching.

Using Grass Catcher
Youcanusethegrasscatchertocollectclippingswhile
youareoperatingthemower.
1. Attachgrasscatcherfollowinginstructionson page

bagasyourunthe mower.Operatethemowertillthe
grassbagisfull.
2. Stopenginecompletelybyreleasingtheblade
controlhandle.Makesurethattheunithascometo
a completestop.

Lubrication

lubricateat leastoncea seasonwitha lightoil,all
othertypesrequireno lubrication.However,ifthe
wheelsareremovedforanyreason,lubricatethe
surfaceoftheaxleboltandtheinnersurfaceofthe
wheelwithlightautomotiveoil.
3. Lubricatethetorsionspringandpivotpointonthe
reardoorperiodicallywith lightoil topreventrust.

tions.

Keepthecoolingsystem(blowerhousingarea)clean

grass,dirtandcombustibledebrisfrommufflerarea.
Deck
Theundersideofthemowerdeckshouldbecleanedafter
eachuseto preventa buildupofgrassclippings,leaves,
dirtorothermatter.If thisdebrisisallowedtoaccumulate,
itwillinviterustandcorrosion,and maypreventproper
mulching.
Thedeckmaybecleanedbytiltingthemowerandscrap-
ingcleanwitha suitabletool(makecertainthesparkplug
wireisdisconnected).
Blade Care
__1 ARNING: When removing the
cutting blade for sharpening or
replacement, protect your hands
with a pair of heavy glovesor use
a heavy rag to hold the blade.
Periodicallyinspectthebladeadapterforcracks,especial-
lyifyoustrikea foreignobject.Replacewhennecessary.
Followthestepsbelowforbladeservice:
1. Disconnectsparkplugwirefromsparkplug.
2. Tipmoweras specifiedinseparateenginemanual,if
itdoesnotspecifyturnmoweron itssidemakingsure
thattheairfilterandthecarburetorareup.
3. Removetheboltandthebladebellsupportwhich
holdthebladeandthebladeadaptertotheengine
