1.0 MECHANICALSETUP
1. StepstofollowtoinstallandsetuptheOptotune6Xsystemonastand.RefertoSystemDiagram.

1. InstallchoiceofAdapterTube(typically1‐6015or1‐6218)tostand.
2. Attach6XSub‐assemblywithnolowerinterface,(ex.1‐63842,1‐63843,1‐64467,1‐
63845),ortheP.E.Ultra(1‐61517),andsecurewith3Xsetscrewsinadapter.
3. InsertAdapter1‐64800or1‐64801dependingonwhetherusingthe6XSuborP.E.
Ultra,respectively,dove‐tailsidefirst,intothebottomofthe6XSub‐assembly,and
securewith3Xsetscrewsinthe6Xsub‐assembly.
4. ThreadtheOptotuneLens(1‐64794)intothebottomoftheAdapter,coax‐portfacing
upwards.
a. NotethattheOptotuneLenscancontinuetorotateevenafterfullythreaded,
thisisnormalandusedforadjustmentoftheOptotune’sorientation.
5. Threadeitherthe1‐64795CoaxInterface,orthe1‐64802Adapterdependingon
whetheryouwanttousecoaxlighting.
6. RefertoSystemDiagramtoinstallyourchoiceofobjectivelenses.
7. ThreadPixeLINKCameratoAdapterTubeandconnecttoPCusingPixeLINKUSBcable
(ideallyaUSB3port).
2.0 SOFTWARESETUP
StepsforfirsttimesoftwaresetuptoinstallOptotuneLensDriverfirmwareandOptotuneControlApplication.

1. Withinthesoftwarepackagefiles,navigateto“OptotuneLensDriver‐>OptotuneLensDriverController”.
2. RunSetup.exeandfollowtheprompts.
3. PlugtheOptotuneLensDriver4i(1‐40372)intoaUSBport(USB2orUSB3),donothaveitpluggedintothe
OptotuneLensyet.
4. OpenyourDeviceManagerandlocatetheLensDriverinthe“Ports”section.
5. RightclicktheLensDriverandselect“UpdateDriver”.
6. Select“Browsemycomputerfordriversoftware”,thennavigatetotheinstalledlocationoftheOptotune
Firmware,bydefaultit’s“C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\OptotuneSwitzerlandAG\LensDriver
Controller\Resources\Driver”,clicknextandfollowtheprompts.
7. Oncedone,youcanconnecttheOptotuneLensandtheLensDriverusingtheHiroseCable(1‐40370or1‐
40371).

b. ClicktheAutobuttontorunAuto‐Exposure.TheAutoexposureroutinewillautomaticallyadjustthe
ExposureTimeuntiltheimage’scontrastiswellbalanced.

3. Gamma:AdjustingGammawillchangethecontrastoftheimage.
4. RegionofInterest:ROIcontrolstheregionwherethesharpnessscoreusedforauto‐focusiscalculatedwithin.
MoveandresizetheROIonthefeatureofinteresttoauto‐focuson.
a. TogglethevisibilityoftheROIcontrolboxusingtheShowROIcheckbox.
b. SaveWaypointsbyclickingthe“Add”button.ThiswillsavethecurrentROIsettingstoalist,allowing
youtoquicklyswitchbetweenmultiplesavedROIs.
5. StreamControlPanel:Toolsforstarting/stoppingthestream,pausingthestream,openingapopupstream
window,capturingthecurrentframeasanimagefile,andrecordingthestream.
6. SharpnessScore:AmeasureofthecontrastwithintheROI.ThehighertheSharpnessScore,themorein‐focus
theimage.ItshouldbenotedthatSharpnessScoreisnotnormalized,meaningthesharpnessscoresofdifferent
imagescannotbecomparedtodescriberelativefocus.
a. ThemaxSharpnessScoreisrecordedliveandcanbeusedtocomparewiththecurrentSharpnessScore
readingtoseeifbestfocushasbeenreached.Thecoloredbuttonrepresentshowcloseyouaretobest
focus,withgreen–within2%,yellow–within50%,red–under50%.Typically,oneshouldadjust
throughbestfocus,thenadjustbackuntilbuttonisgreen.ClickthebuttontoresetthemaxSharpness
Score.

a. Zooming:HoldShiftandscrolltodigitallyzoom.

1. OpticalPower:ThecurvatureoftheOptotuneLens.AdjustingFocalPowerwillchangethefocusofthesystem.It
shouldbenotedthatalthoughtherangeofOpticalPowerislargerthanthespecifiedtuningrangeoftheLens,
theareaoutsidethetuningrangemaynotbeheldastemperatureincreases.
a. DragthesliderandorusethenumericcontrolboxtomanuallyadjusttheOpticalPower.
b. TheMinandMaxbuttonswillbringtheOpticalPowertoitsMinandMaxlimits.
c. HoldthefineandfastjogbuttonstojogtheOpticalPowerinthecorrespondingdirection.
2. Auto-Focus:WillautomaticallyadjustOpticalPoweruntilimageisinfocus.UsestheROIofthecamerato
calculatecontrast.PriortorunningAuto‐Focus,youshouldnarrowAuto‐FocusLimitsaroundwherebestfocusis
toimproveAuto‐Focusreliability.
a. PresstheAutobuttontoinitiateAuto‐Focus.
b. ToggletheContinuouscheckboxtotoggleContinuousAuto‐Focusmode.Thiswillcontinuouslyadjust
OpticalPowertoattempttokeeptheimageinfocuseventhroughchangesinelevation.
3. Auto-FocusLimits:ThelimitswithinwhichAuto‐Focuswillsamplein.BeforerunningAuto‐Focus,youshould
narrowthelimitsnearbestfocus.Thiswillimprovereliabilityandpotentiallythespeed.
a. Drageitherendofthesliderorusethenumericcontrolboxestoadjustminandmaxlimits.
b. TheSetMinimumorSetMaximumbuttonswillsetthecurrentOpticalPowerastheminormax
respectively.
c. TheResetbuttonwillresettheminandmaxlimitsbacktotheoveralllimits.

b. Acceleration:Howfastthevelocityprofilewillchangefrominitialtofinalvelocity.
c. Velocity:Changetheinitialandfinalvelocitiestomodifythevelocityprofile.Generally,modifythefinal
velocitytosloworspeedupmovement.
d. Backlash:Addanadditionalbacklashadjustmentinstepswhilemovingintheforwardorreverse
direction(Notactuallytoopositivewhatthisdoes).
e. SaveSettings:Settingswillbeappliedtemporarilywhentheyarechanged.Savethesettingstowritethe
currentsettingstoflash,ensuringitwillremainwhenthecontrolleristurnedoffandonagain.
f. ResettoDefault:Resetallsettingstothefactorydefaultvalues.
4.0 PARFOCALITYPROCEDURE

4.1 SETUP/CHECKS
1. EnsurethatyouhavegonethroughSoftwareSetuponthePCthatyou’recurrentlyusing.
2. EnsurethattheOptotuneLensisconnectedtotheLensDriverviaaHiroseCable,andtheLensDriverconnected
tothePCviaUSB.
3. EnsurethatthePixeLINKCameraisconnectedtothePCviaUSB3.
4. Ensurethatthemotorizedzoom(ifusingamotorizedzoom)isconnectedtotheappropriateNavitarMotor
Controller,turnedonandinitializedwithoutissues,andisconnectedtothePCviaUSB.
5. Ensurethatyou’reusinganAdapterTubewithadjustableparfocality.
4.2 PROCEDURE
1. LaunchtheOptotuneControlApplicationandusethecamerastreamingfeaturetolookattarget.
2. SetOptotune’sfocalpowerto0dpt.
3. Adjustworkingdistanceuntiltargetisclosetobeinginfocus.
4. SetZoomtohighmagnification.

3. OpentheTaskManager,andmakesurethatnootherinstancesoftheNavitarDeviceControlapplicationare
running.Ifthereareotherinstances,forceclosethem.
