Connecting the Router
Co ect the router to a power source, to your local area etwork
(LAN), a d to your ISDN li e as show i the Hardware I stallatio
diagram.
To co ect the router:
• Use the standard twisted pair Ethernet cable (provided in your
NETGEAR package) to connect your router to a PC.
• Use the black cable (provided in your NETGEAR package) to
connect your router to the ISDN line.
I preparatio for usi g the router to co ect your PCs to the I ter et,
you must do the followi g:
• Order ISDN service from your phone company.
• Configure your PCs for using the TCP/IP networking protocol.
• Order Internet service from an ISP.

ISDN Checklist

• Your service profile identifier numbers (SPIDs)
• The switch type and protocol of the switch (for example,

Your Network Checklist
The Model RH340 router uses the I ter et Protocol (IP). The IP
co figuratio has the followi g requireme ts:
• All PCs must have Tra smissio Co trol Protocol/I ter et
Protocol (TCP/IP) ma ually i stalled a d selected as the
etworki g protocol.
• All PCs a d the router must be assig ed IP addresses. The
router’s DHCP fu ctio automatically assig s these for you, but
your PCs must be set to “Obtai a IP address automatically” i
the Network Co trol Pa el.
• Be certai to check that “Obtai a IP address automatically” is
selected withi the TCP/IP Properties i the Network Co trol
Pa el. Refer to “Co figuri g TCP/IP Properties,” i the ext
colum , to co firm these setti gs.
ISP Checklist
If you are obtai i g a ISDN accou t with a I ter et service
provider (ISP), order a si gle-user accou t that provides a si gle
dy amic IP address u less you have a eed for registered IP
addresses. Make sure you receive the followi g i formatio from your
ISP:
• Login name
• Password
• Dial up phone number of the ISP
• DNS server IP address(es) of the ISP
I additio , you should ask your ISP these questio s:
• Will your IP address be dynamically assigned?
• Will your DNS server address be dynamically assigned?
If ot, you will eed to e ter it i FirstGear’s Adva ced Optio s.
• Does your ISP support the Multilink Protocol?
If you i te d to co ect both ISDN B cha els simulta eously
for a 128 Kbps co ectio , your ISP must support the Multili k
Protocol.
Configuring Windows 95 orWindows 98 for IP
Networking
All PCs must have a Ether et etwork adapter card i stalled a d
must have the TCP/IP etworki g protocol i stalled a d co figured.
TCP/IP i stallatio may eed to be do e ma ually as described here.
To co figure Microsoft
®
Wi dows 95 or Wi dows 98 for IP
etworki g:
1. Click on Start from the Windows toolbar.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Control Panel.
4. Select Network.
I the list of i stalled compo e ts, you must have Clie t for
Microsoft Networks, your Ether et adapter, a d TCP/IP.
If you eed the adapter:
a. Click on the Add button.
b. Select Ada ter, and then click on Add again.
c. Select the manufacturer and model of your Ethernet
ada ter, and click on OK.
If you eed TCP/IP:
a. Click on the Add button.
b. Select Protocol, and then click on Add again.
c. Select Microsoft.
d. Select TCP/IP, and click on OK.
If you eed Clie t for Microsoft Networks:
a. Click on the Add button.
b. Select Client, and then click on Add again.
ConfiguringTCP/IP Properties
NETGEAR recomme ds that you leave the TCP/IP setup parameters
at their factory default setti gs u less you have a specific reaso to
cha ge them. With the default setti gs, your PC is co figured to
obtai its TCP/IP co figuratio i formatio automatically from a
DHCP server o the local etwork. The Model RH340 router is
shipped preco figured as a DHCP server a d will assig the TCP/IP
co figuratio i formatio described i the followi g sectio .
You must also be certai that your PC is set to “Obtai a IP address
automatically” i the Network Co trol Pa el.
To co firm that the IP address will be automatically obtai ed:
1. Click on Start from the Windows toolbar.
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Control Panel.
4. Select Network.
5. Select the Configuration tab.
6. Within the Configuration window, select TCP/IP from the list
of network com onents shown.
If you have several TCP/IP e tries i this wi dow, choose the o e
associated with your Ether et adapter.
7. Click on Pro erties.
The TCP/IP me u ope s.
8. Select the IP Address tab.
9. Select “Obtain an IP address automatically,” as illustrated
below.
10. Click on OK.
To obtai the co figuratio i formatio from the router:
1. Turn on the router. Be sure the router has been on for at least
one minute before continuing to ste 2.
2. Reboot each PC on your network.
VerifyingTCP/IP Properties
After your PC has bee co figured a d rebooted, you ca check the
TCP/IP co figuratio usi g the Wi dows utility winipcfg.exe (for
Wi dows NT
®
systems, use ipcon g.exe ). From the Start butto , ope
the Ru wi dow, type wi ipcfg at the prompt, a d click o OK. I the
wi ipcfg display wi dow, select your Ether et adapter from the
drop-dow me u, a d verify the followi g i formatio :
• The IP address should be between 192.168.0.2 and
192.168.0.31.
• The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0.
• The default gateway should be 192.168.0.1.
Click o More I fo, a d verify the followi g:
• The DNS server should be 192.168.0.1.
Note:
It is ot ecessary to remove a y other etwork
compo e ts show i the Network wi dow i order to
i stall the adapter, TCP/IP, or Clie t for Microsoft
Networks.

To co figure your router, use the FirstGear
™
co figuratio software
provided o the RH340 Resources CD.
To i stall FirstGear:
1. Insert the NETGEAR RH340 Resources CD into the CD
drive of your PC, and run the Setu rogram.
a. Click on Start from the Windows toolbar.
b. Click on Run.
c. Click on Browse.
d. Click on the CD drive.
e. Select Setu .exe.
f. Click on OK.
The Setup wi dow ope s, which loads the FirstGear
program to your hard drive.
The Welcome Wi dow ope s.
2. Click on Next.
The Choose Desti atio Locatio wi dow ope s.
3. Click on Next to install the FirstGear rogram in the
Program Files folder. If you want to have the rogram laced
elsewhere, click on Browse to find an alternate location for
the software, and then click on Next.
The Select Program Folder wi dow ope s.
4. Be sure that “FirstGear for RH340” is shown in the Program
Folders entry field (the default name), or select a folder from
the Existing Folders list.
Or
You ca type i a u ique ame for the folder. Verify that the
i formatio o the scree is correct.
5. Click on Next.
The Setup Complete wi dow ope s.
6. Click on Finish.
FirstGear is ow i stalled o your PC, a d a FirstGear shortcut
ico ow appears o the desktop of your PC.
You are ow ready to lau ch FirstGear.
To lau ch FirstGear:
1. Double-click on the FirstGear icon on your deskto .
The Co figuratio Wizard ISDN Li e I formatio -North
America wi dow ope s, as illustrated below.
2. Enter your ISDN information.
Be sure to e ter your directory umbers i the local format (for
example, 5551111). Do ot e ter the area code u less it is
required for local diali g.
3. Click on Next.
The Co figuratio Wizard ISDN Test wi dow ope s, as
illustrated below.
4. Click on the ISDN Test button.
The ISDN test begi s. If the test is successful, the NETGEAR
message wi dow ope s, i formi g you the test was successful.
5. Click on OK.
If the ISDN test fails, trace i formatio will be displayed to help
i troubleshooti g. If so, refer to the “Troubleshooti g” sectio
i this guide, recheck your ISDN setup i formatio a d the
physical co ectio , a d the e ter the correct ISDN
i formatio . If the test co ti ues to fail, refer to the
“Troubleshooti g” sectio i the Reference Guide for the Model
RH340 Internet Access ISDN Router . After you e ter the correct
i formatio a d the test is successful, the “test successful”
message scree ope s.
6. Click on OK.
The Co figuratio Wizard ISP I formatio wi dow ope s, as
illustrated below.
7. Enter your ISP account information.
8. Click on Next.
The Co figuratio Wizard ISP Test wi dow ope s, as illustrated
below.
Note:
Be sure the router is co ected a d has bee
powered o for at least o e mi ute before lau chi g
FirstGear.
Installing FirstGear
Launching FirstGear
Note:
Be sure to e ter the ISP’s pho e umber as you
would dial it from your locatio (for example, 1 + area
code a d the seve digit umber o ly if it is ot a local
call).

9. Click on ISP Test.
If the ISP test fails, recheck your ISP accou t i formatio . Trace
i formatio will be displayed to help i troubleshooti g. If so,
refer to the “Troubleshooti g” sectio o this page. If the test
co ti ues to fail, refer to the “Troubleshooti g” sectio i the
Reference Guide for the Model RH340 Internet Access ISDN
Router . After you e ter the correct i formatio a d the test is
successful, the NETGEAR message scree ope s.
10. Click on Yes when the FirstGear window o ens, signifying
that the test was successful.
If the test is successful, the Co figuratio Wi dow Complete
wi dow ope s, as illustrated below.
You are ow co figured for basic I ter et fu ctio s (such as Web
access).
11. Click on Exit, or click on Set Advanced Config O tions, as
illustrated below, for additional configuration features.
The Adva ced Optio s wi dow, illustrated below, provides the
co figuratio for the followi g procedures:
• Usi g a fixed DNS address
• Specifyi g a PC as a local server or game host
• Selecti g Multili k optio s
• Cha gi g the idle timeout
• Specifyi g DOVBS operatio
For detailed i formatio about the data to be e tered i each FirstGear
scree , click o the Help butto at the bottom of the scree . Your
Model RH340 router is ow fully co figured to provide I ter et
access for your etwork.
Whe your router a d PCs are co figured correctly, your router will
place a call to your ISP automatically whe ever a applicatio
requires access to the I ter et. The router will also disco ect from
the ISP whe the co ectio has bee idle for approximately five
mi utes. It is ot ecessary for you to ru a dialer applicatio such as
Dial-Up Networki g to co ect, log i , or disco ect. These fu ctio s
will be performed by the router as eeded.
To access the I ter et, lau ch a browser applicatio such as
Microsoft’s I ter et Explorer or Netscape’s Navigator. You should see
the router’s B1 LED illumi ate, i dicati g that a call is bei g placed.
Soo the LAN activity LED will begi to flicker, i dicati g
commu icatio betwee your router a d your ISP. The browser
should the begi to display a page. This process may take up to o e
mi ute.
After about five mi utes of i activity, the router will disco ect the
call. Upo further browser activity, the router will redial
automatically.

www.NETGEAR.com.
If FirstGear ca ot fi d your router:
• Check the Ether et co ectio betwee your PC a d router. The
li k LED o your Ether et card a d the correspo di g port LED
o the router should be o .
• Be sure that the router has bee o for at least o e mi ute before
starti g FirstGear.
If the ISDN co ectio test fails:
• Check that you e tered the directory umbers i a correct format
for diali g locally. Do ot e ter the area code u less it is required
for local diali g.
• Recheck your directory umbers, SPIDs, a d switch type.
• If your switch is ru i g the Natio al ISDN (NI-1) protocol,
select “Natio al ISDN” rather tha the switch model
(Nortel, AT&T).
If the ISP co ectio test fails:
• Check that you e tered the pho e umber i the correct format
for diali g locally. Do ot e ter the area code u less it is required
for local diali g.
If the router does ot place a call whe you lau ch your browser:
• Check that your PC has the router co figured as its default
gateway. Verify the gateway address as described i the sectio
“Verifyi g TCP/IP Properties.”
• If your PC lau ches Wi dows Dial-up Networki g, you will eed
to cha ge the I ter et co ectio parameters. Access the I ter et
Co trol Pa el. Select the Co ectio tab. Depe di g o your
versio of Dial-Up Networki g, you will eed to either:
a. Clear the check box labeled “Connect to the Internet
as needed.”
Or
b. Select “Connect to the Internet using a local
area network.”
If your router co ects, but you are u able to load a y pages from the
I ter et:
• Check that your PC has at least o e DNS server address
co figured. A DNS server is a host o the I ter et that tra slates
I ter et ames (for example, a World Wide Web address) to
umeric IP addresses. Typically, your ISP will provide the
addresses of o e or two DNS servers for your use. Followi g the
procedure described i the sectio “Verifyi g TCP/IP
Properties,” verify that a DNS server address is prese t.

Note: I some areas, you must dial a local ISDN data call
usi g 1+ area code or you will receive a 56K co ectio
