4
4. Find the “Ports” Folder and expand field by clicking the arrow to the left:
Here you should see an “!” next to the driver that needs updating.
5. Find the driver with the “!” and right click the icon to open the options menu and then select “Update Driver Software”
5
7. Click the “Browse” Button and find the .INF file
Once you select, click “OK” then “Next” to install the driver.
8. A Window Security pop-up will appear, select the 2nd option “Install this driver software anyway”
9. Once the driver is installed you will see the confirmation window. Click close once it is completed.
6
Download and Install HyperTerminal
1. Open your internet browser
2. Use this link: ftp://download.newport.com/MotionControl/Current/ to access the download page
3. Select the “HyperTerminal for W7” link
4. Select to download the hyperterminal.zip file
5. Please be sure to save the .zip file to your desktop or downloads folder
6. Once download is complete, open the .zip file and initiate the install from the file hypertrm.exe
- Windows will prompt you with a question to extract all files before opening, select “extract all”
7. Once the install is complete, launch the HyperTerminal application.
Launch HyperTerminal and Set Parameters for NPC1USB
Required Equipment:
1. NPC1USB Piezo Amplifier
2. Computer with HyperTerminal Application installed (Windows 7)
3. A compatible laboratory instrument (Example: NPX400 Piezo Stage from Newport Corporation)
4. Connector cable (USB cable included with NPC1USB) connecting the instrument to one of the communication ports
(COM1 or COM2 of the computer)
5. 24V AC Adapter Power Supply (Recommended: CONEX-PS)
1. Begin by launching the HyperTerminal application to bring up the Connection Description window
7
8. Type in anything you like for the name field and select your icon from the list and click “OK”
Please note: You may now see a window named Phone Number. Since you will not be using a modem connection to communicate with
your instrument, select either Direct To COM1 or Direct To COM2 in the Connect Using field (depending on which communications ports
of your computer the cable is connected to). Once you have made this selection, on the next screen in step 9, the Country Code, Area Code
and Phone Number fields should be inactive.
9. Next you will be prompted with the “Connect To” Screen. Use the dropdown menu to select the port you are using (typically COM1 or
COM2) and click OK.
Note: To confirm the correct COM port for your device, please navigate to the Device Manager under “Ports”.
8
10. The next window that appears should be the COM1 or COM2 Properties window. This is where you will set your instruments
communications parameters. Set the baud rate to the same rate as the laboratory instrument that is being controlled. The recommended
baud rate setting, as well as the setting for other parameters, such as data bit, parity, stop bit and flow control, can be found in the manual
that shipped with your instrument. (For this example we have used the NPX400 Piezo Stage by Newport Corporation).
Once these parameters are set, click OK.
11. The final step in the configuration is the ASCII Protocol. From the main HyperTerminal window, select File>Properties to bring up the
Properties window.
Click on the Settings tab and then click on ASCII Setup..
9
In the ASCII Setup window, youll want to make sure that you check the following boxes:
- Send line ends with line feeds
- Echo Type characters locally - This will allow you to see responses in the main HyperTerminal window if they are provided
- Append line feeds to incoming line ends
- Wrap lines that exceed terminal width
Click OK
10
12. You should now only have the HyperTerminal window open and all settings should be complete. The device you intend to control should
now respond to ASCII commands as typed into the main HyperTerminal service. You will find a list of available device independent and
device dependent commands in the laboratory instrument manual.
Depending on the equipement being controlled, you have to press ENTER key to execute a command. If the controlled device provides
feedback in ASCII text, and if you are using a three wire interconnect (Transmit/Receive in both directions), you may also see responses
from the device you are controlling in the main hypertext window.
Example Syntax when Using HyperTerminal
Please see below for example commands in HyperTerminal when using the NPC1USB Amplifier paired with the NPX400 Motion Stage
from Newport Corporation.
Once all parts instruments are connected and HyperTerminal setup is complete. You should have a SOLID ORANGE light on the LED
Display. This indicates the device is in NOT REFERENCED.
To move the device from NOT REFERENCE to READY State you will type in the command: 1OR and press ENTER. This should now give you
a SOLID GREEN light on the LED Display.
To move the NPX400 an absolute amount type in the command 1PA# example: 1PA45 will move the stage the absolute value to the left. If
you want to move the stage the opposite way, you would simply type the command 1PA-45.
If you want to see the the absolute or relative postion of the stage you can do this at anytime. Simply type in the follwing commands:
1PA? = Give absolute position
1PR?= Give relative position
Finally, If you need to REST the controller for any reason and go back to the NOT REFERENCE state, simply type command RS and press
ENTER. This will give you a SOLID ORANGE light on the LED Display.
*Refer to your device manual for a full list of commands and syntax.
