Younowownoneofthebrightest,easiest-to-focus
telephotolensesforclose-upphotography-the
Micro-Nikkor105mmf/2.8.Andnowit'sallyours:
beautifulclose-upshotsofthehardest-to-capture
subjects/fromshybutterfliestowriggling reptiles,
takenfroma safedistancewithoutdisturbingyour
subjects...orendangering yourself; captivating
portraits;andfascinatingphotosshotwhenlighting
islessthanperfect.WiththeMicro-Nikkor105mm,
viewfinderimageisbrightandclear,evenindim
illumination.Youcanfocuseasily. . . andseethe
differenceinyourphotographyimmediately.
Evenwithitslongfocallength,theMicro-Nikkor
105mmstandsoutascompactandeasytohandle.
That'sbecauseitsspecialopticalconstructionmeans
onlya slightincreaseinlensextension,evenwhen
you'refocusingatclosedistances.Andofcourse
Nikonhasassuredgoodperformancefrominfinity
downtotheclosestfocusingdistance(0.41m,
1.34ft) witha 1:2reproductionratio,evenatfull
aperture,withitsClose-RangeCorrectionSystem.
WithNIC(NikonIntegratedCoating)appliedtothe
air-to-glasssurfacesofthelenselement,notonlydo
youavoidghostimagesandflare,butcolorrendition
isalsoimproved.
AndwithsuitablyequippedNikoncameras,thislens
offers"AutomaticMaximumApertureIndexing"
(AI), permittingfull apertureexposuremeasurement
throughthedualfunctioningofthemetercoupling
ridgeandautomaticdiaphragm.Youcangetthe
sameoperationwithnon-AItypeNikoncamerasby
usingthelens'meteringcouplingshoe.
Forfurtherfocusingextensionfrom1:2,justattach
theAutoExtensionRing PN-11, a Teleconvertoror
abellowsattachment.

Graspthelensbyitsmountingring.Positionthelens
inthecamera'sbayonetmount,lininguptheaper-
tureindexonthelenswiththelensmountingindex
onthecamera,andtwistthelenscounterclockwise
untilitclicksintoplace.
Toremove,depressthelensreleasebuttononthe
cameraandtwistthelensclockwise.
•Whenmountingthelensona camerawitha meter
couplinglever(Al-type),makesurethatthe
camera'smetercouplingleveriscorrectlyposi-
tioned;whenmountingona camerawithoutthis
lever(nonAl-type),youneed"manual"maximum
apertureindexing.Inbothcases,checkthe
camera'sinstructionmanual.

TheMicro-Nikkor105mmf/2.8operatescontinu-
ouslyfrominfinity(«>)to0.41m(1.34ft)fora
reproductionratioof1:2.WiththePN-11ring
attached,focusingisextendedtoa reproduction
ratioof 1:0.88.
Tofocus,first makesurethatthetighteningscrew
onthefocusingringisloosened.Then,turnthefo-
cusingringuntiltheimageonthefocusingscreen
appearssharp.Tokeepthefocusingringfrommov-
ing,besuretotightenthescrew.Thetightening
screwmakesitdifficulttoaccidentallymovethe
focusingring,butitdoesnotlockitinplace.
Thedistancescaleonthefocusingringismarkedin
bothmeters(white)andfeet(yellow).Thesefigures
indicatethedistancefromthesubjecttothe
camera'sfilmplane.Theexactpositionofthefilm
planeisindicatedonallcamerasforconvenience
whenprecisemeasurementofthedistanceisre-
quired.(Formoredetails,checkyourcamera's
instructionmanual).
•Althoughitispossibletoturnthefocusingring
withthescrewtightened,donotattemptit.
•Attheclosestdistancesetting,thelensfocallength
isapprox.82mm.

lensorpicture-takingsituation.Thosewhicharerec-
ommendedforusewithyourlensarelistedbelow.

andF2-seriescameras(e.g.,NikonFA,FE2,FM2

Focusingonpredeterminedreproductionratio
Thereproductionratiois,numerically,therelation-
shipbetweentheimagesize(toberecordedonthe
film)andtheactualsubjectsize.Forexample,ifthe
imageonthefocusingscreenisone-fifththeactual
subjectsize,thereproductionratiois1:5.
Tworeproductionscalesareinscribedinorange
abovethedistancescaleonthefocusingring.The
innerscale,withfiguresfrom1:10to2,represents
reproductionratiosobtainedwhenthelensisused
alone.Theouterscalefigures(from2 to0.88)repre-
sentpossibleratioswhenthelensandPN-11ringare
usedtogether.Usingeitherofthesescales, youcan
photographata predeterminedratiowithoutcalcu-
latingdistances.Forexample,tophotographata
reproductionratioof1:5,justturnthefocusingring
untilthenumber"5"isalignedwiththedistance
indexline;thenaimatthesubjectandadjustyour
position(closerto,orfartherawayfromthesubject)
untiltheimageappearssharponthefocusingscreen.
•Thetighteningscrewisindexed"4"forone-fourth.
Depthoffield
Depthoffieldreferstothezoneofacceptablefocus
infrontofandbehindtheareaofsharpestfocusin
yourshot.Athighreproductionratios,depthof
fieldisextremelyshallow;it'sbest,therefore,to
previewbeforeactualshooting.Onewaytodothisis
topressthedepth-of-fieldbuttononyourcamera
andthelenswillclosetothepreselectedaperture,
showingyouhowmuchbackgroundandforeground
isinfocus.Anotherwayistoreadthecolor-coded
indicatorsinscribedonthelensbarrel.Thepairsof
coloredlinesoneithersideofthedistanceindexline
correspondtothef/numbersofthesamecoloron
theaperturescale.Atclosedistances,however,so
littleisinfocusthatitmaybemoreusefulto check
thedepth-of-fieldtablesonpages32and33.

NOTESONCLOSE-UP
Camerashake
Whenshootingclose-ups,youwillprobablyen-
countersomespecialproblemsnotfoundingeneral
photography.Oneissensitivitytovibration-image
magnificationissohighthateventheslightestmove-
mentduringshootingwillcausea blurredimage.To
avoidthis,werecommendtheuseofa tripodwitha
cablereleasetoactivatetheshutter.Forthispurpose,
the360°rotatabletripodmountingcollaronthePN
ringwillproveuseful.
Closeworkingdistances
Atthehighreproductionratiosofclose-upshooting,
depthoffielddecreasesdrastically.Stoppingdown
thelenspartiallycompensatesforthis,butatvery
closeworkingdistances,anextremelyshallowdepth
offieldisinevitable.Besure,then,toplacethe
cameracarefullytoensurethattheimportantsur-
facesofthesubjectareinthesamezoneofsharp-
ness.

TheMicro-Nikkor105mmf/2.8goesfroma 1:2
reproductionratiodownto 1:0.88 whenthePN-11
ringisattached.BecausetheClose-RangeCorrection
Systemisspecificallydesignedforfocusingatclose
distancesratherthanatmediumtoinfinity,the
aperturesthatwillgiveyougoodresultswillbe

limitedwhenthePN-11ringisusedforreproduction
ratiosfrom1:2to1:1.1.Therecommendedf/number
scaleengravedabovethereproductionratioscale
indicatesbestresults.
Close-upphotographywithbellows
attachment
Whenusinga bellowsattachment,focusbyturning
thelensfocusingringtoa closerdistancesetting,
withoutlengtheningthebellowsextension.Ifbel-
lowsextensionisrequiredforreproductionratios
from1:2.2to1:1,stopthelensdown,referring
totherecommendedf/numberonthelensbarrel.
•Thelensshouldbefocusedtoasclosea distanceas
possibleforgoodresults,evenifthelensisusedin
reverseposition.
