Description
Nilan MultiLink
Nilan MultiLink enables remote monitoring and control of Nilan ventilation units. Used in, for instance,
apartment buildings, hotels, holiday homes and in places where it is necessary to monitor many
ventilation units.
The units are connected to a gateway via their Modbus connections. The gateway is then connected to
the internet and can be accessed via a secure cloud solution.
Components
The following shows components that may be included in the MultiLink system.
Gateway basic kit - consisting of:
•1 Gateway
• 1 Power supply
• 1 Installation plug
For mounting on DIN rail in electrical switchboard cabinet and for
connection to router.
Gateway basic kit installed in mounting box - consisting of:

Modbus network
Construction of Modbus network
Modbus construction
Modbus (RTU - RS485/EIA485) is established via an enamelled twisted pair of conductors as well as
ground. Data+ and Data- must be in the same twisted pair set, for instance yellow/green or brown/
white in a LIYCY-P cable.
It must be a multi drop connection. Do not use a star connection or similar cabling. There can be up to
10 ventilation units per gateway. Bitzer has junction boxes so conductors and wires can be connected
correctly. The cable from the junction box to the control system should be kept as short as possible in
order to avoid signal reflections.
Modbus cable specification
Communication is half-duplex.
• Max. 250m twisted pair cable, grounded enamelled wire and grounding wire
• Cable type: Belden 941/942 or multi cable LIYCY-P 2*2*0,25 mm2

In the example above there is an insulated repeater between each unit. The reason for this is that they
have different ground potentials. You thereby avoid that a potential short circuit of a unit is
transmitted to the rest of the system.

Wiring
You can wire the system in two ways.

Installation
Setup
Setting of Modbus addresses
Every ventilation unit must have its own Modbus address.
It is recommended that you change the Modbus addresses so they lie within the interval of 41 - 50.
They will thereby not conflict with the standard Modbus address, 30, which is the standard address for
all Nilan’s ventilation units.

According to the service menu in the software instructions, the Modbus address of the units can be
changed via the control panel.
ATTENTION
The Modbus address is necessary in the setup of the Nilan MultiLink system. It is therefore
important to make a note of which ventilation unit has been given which Modbus address.
Up to 10 ventilation units can be connected to a gateway.
10

Gateway information
On the back of the gateway there is a label with a MAC
address consisting of 6 set of letters and/ or numbers.
Make a note of this address and the connected apartments.
You will need this information later during setup of the
Nilan MultiLink system.

Internet connection with cable
Connect the gateway to the internet via a router with a standard Ethernet Cat5e patch cable.
No setup of the router is required apart from the fact that it must have internet connection. The
gateway will automatically establish a connection to the internet and the cloud through the router.
Wireless internet connection
It is recommended that you order the gateway with an integral SIM card. You can install a SIM card
yourself, but it is a somewhat complicated and time consuming task.
When you purchase a gateway with an integral SIM card, it will automatically connect to the internet
and the cloud once it has been plugged in.
If the attached aerial does not reach, it is possible to connect an external aerial, which will provide a
better signal.
Connection to the unit
For most products Modbus connections to Nilan’s units take place via the 8 pole plug for the control
panel. See details in the installation instructions for the unit.
Modbus connection in 8 pole plug
6- Connect Data+
7 - Connect Data -
The plug enables you to fasten all the wires with a cable binder.
If you cannot connect Modbus via the control panel plug, you can connect Modbus directly on the circuit
board of the unit in accordance with the diagram below. For further information, see the wiring
diagram for the unit.

Troubleshooting
Communication
Troubleshooting communication errors
If a communication error occurs, check the following:
1. Check that the gateway and the ventilation units are powered
2. Check whether the Data+ and the Data- wires have been switched
3. Check that each ventilation unit has its own unique Modbus address in accordance with the template
provided
4. Check that there is activity on LED1 at Ethernet plug 2 on the gateway (the activity must be regular)
5. Check that the gateway is connected to the internet (can you access the internet with a computer
via the Ethernet cable for the gateway)
6. Check that all ventilation units are grounded correctly.
Modbus network
Data+ and Data- refer to ground in each individual control system, which, through the control system,
is connected to protective earthing (PE). The voltage between Data+/Data- and the reference (PE) is
called the common mode voltage. The common mode voltage / the potential difference between
ground points must not exceed 5Vrms AC and DC.
At the gateway, ground connected up to PE ground and. wired to each junction box, but as a rule are not
connected to the control, as this has its own PE ground connection. Check the voltage difference from
the grounded shield to the frame of the steering. If it exceeds 5Vrms, check if the controller is
connected to PE ground via the supply cable. If the voltage is not lowered below 5Vrms via the ground
wire, the frame wire is connected from the cable between the connection box and the controller. Now
the screen and the power line will provide the potential equalization between the control and the
gateway. The frame and screen are brought together at the gateway and in the junction box in order to
handle a slightly larger ground loop current.
