Changing Direction of Application
The applicator can be modified from Application from the left (A) to
Application from the right (B) without additional components.
1. Disassemble nozzle. Refer to page 20, Cleaning Nozzle.
NOTE: The nozzle need only be heated and cleaned if adhesive has
already been processed with the head.
Reassemble the nozzle beginning with step 4..
2. Move the adjusting device.
a. Detach the adjusting device from the body (1).
b. Detach guide (2), slide (3) and stud holder (4), turn 180° and reinstall.

5. Hang the piston rod in the adjusting device slide.
6. The lower edge of the piston should just reveal a groove (7). This
effectively seals the next groove. Otherwise the adjusting device must be
adjusted.
a. Set the application width on the adjusting ring such that the piston is
approximately in the center of the adjustment range. Ensure that the
adjusting ring has clicked into place.
b. Release the adjusting ring clamp (8).
c. Hold the adjusting ring in the locked in position and turn only the
spindle until the lower edge of the piston just reveals a groove (7). To
turn the spindle, e.g. insert a thin hexagon key into the bore (9) and
use it as a lever.
d. Tighten the adjusting wheel clamp.
8
79
7. Complete nozzle reassembly.
8. Attach the brackets (11) and insulation (10) to the desired side.

Installation
Install the applicator in the appropriate place in the production machine.
Observe the following:
SDo not operate in a potentially explosive atmosphere
SProtect from humidity, vibrations, dust and drafts
NOTE: Model PCTnnn-W... is splash‐proof (Water‐Wash)
SEnsure access to parts relevant for maintenance and operation
SProtect the nozzle from damage.
NOTE: Several different brackets with pneumatic swiveling function are
available from Nordson. Refer to page 25, Bracket.
Adapter Plates
The PatternCoat applicators can be installed in all Labeling systems.
Observe the following:
SIf replacing a Nordson LabelCoat gun, the PatternCoat applicator can be
mounted directly onto the Nordson bracket P/N 735184 (CW) or
P/N 735201 (CCW). No adapter plate is needed.
SIf replacing a Nordson LabelCoat gun installed on a bracket P/N 735182
(CW) or P/N 735181 (CCW), an adapter plate may be necessary.
SIf the customer uses his own bracket or an OEM supplied bracket which
is not Nordson standard, an adapter plate may be necessary.

Electrical Connection
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Failure to observe may result in
personal injury, death, or equipment damage.
Laying Cable
WARNING: Ensure that cables do not touch rotating and/or hot unit
components. Do not pinch cables and check regularly for damage. Replace
damaged cables immediately!
Connecting Applicator
Heating
1. Connect cordset to the heated hose receptacle.
2. Use safety clips (when available) to secure the plug connection.
Solenoid Valves
The solenoid valves for the control modules are usually triggered by a control
unit (e.g. Eclipse). Refer to separate control unit manual.
WARNING: Observe operating voltage:
PCTnnn x‐B‐...
24 VDC, overexcitation not permitted
CAUTION: The solenoid valves, model PCTnnn x‐B‐..., may be connected
only to PLCs or control units that supply a stabilized 24 VDC signal without
overexcitation. Higher voltage causes damage to the solenoid valve. Also,
an additional solid state relay with a shunted protective diode must be
used between the control unit and solenoid valve to cover the increased
power consumption! Refer to page 24, Accessories.
PCTnnn x‐S‐...
24 VDC, overexcitation permitted up to 48 VDC

Pneumatic Connection
Connecting Control Air
The applicator may only be connected to pressure controlled and
conditioned compressed air.
The quality of the compressed air must be at least class 2 as stipulated by
ISO 8573-1. This means:
SMax. particle size 1 mm
SMax. particle density 1 mg/m3
SMax. pressure dewpoint -40°C / -40°F
SMax. oil concentration 0.1 mg/m3.
1. Connect a controllable air supply to the control air fitting (1).
2. Set control air pressure to approx. 4 to 6 bar (0.4 to 0.6 MPa /
58 to 87 psi). The exact pressure must be determined for each
application.
Operating with Lubricated Compressed Air
The applicators / control modules can also be operated with lubricated
compressed air.
NOTE: Once the air has been lubricated, it must always be lubricated; the
lubricated compressed air will wash out the original lubricant on the solenoid
valves and the control modules. Nordson recommends:

Connecting Heated Hose
WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear heat‐protective gloves.
Using Second Open‐end Wrench
Use a second open‐end wrench when connecting and disconnecting the
heated hose. This prevents the unit's hose connection from turning.
Connecting
If cold material can be found in the hose connection, these components (1, 2)
must be heated until the material softens (approx. 80°C, 176°F).
1. First connect the hose (3) electrically to the unit. For more than one hose:
Every hose connection is allocated to a corresponding receptacle. Do not
mistakenly exchange!
2. Heat the system and hose to approx. 80°C (176°F).
3. Screw on heated hose.
NOTE: Close unused hose connections with Nordson port plugs.
Disconnecting
WARNING: System and material pressurized. Relieve system pressure
before disconnecting heated hoses. Failure to observe can result in serious
burns.
WARNING: Hot! Risk of burns. Wear safety goggles and heat‐protective
gloves.
1. Turn off material supply.
2. Place a container under the nozzle(s) of the applicator.
3. Activate the solenoid valves electrically or manually. Repeat this
procedure until no more adhesive flows out.
4. Properly dispose of material according to local regulations.

Operation
WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks.
Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other
related documentation.
Triggering Solenoid Valves
CAUTION: Observe the installation instructions: Refer to page 12, Solenoid
Valves.
The solenoid valves for the control modules are usually triggered by a control
unit (e.g. Eclipse). Refer to separate control unit manual.
CAUTION: Trigger the solenoid valve only when the applicator is heated to
operating temperature! Seals in the control module can become damaged if
the adhesive is too cold.
Setting Temperatures
The procedure for setting the temperatures is described in the temperature
controller manual. Temperature controllers are not part of the applicator.
They can be located e.g. in the electrical cabinet of the melter or in a
separate electrical cabinet.
Maximum Operating Temperature
200°C / 392°F.
NOTE: The maximum operating temperature may not be exceeded.
Nordson will assume no warranty or liability for damage resulting from
incorrect temperature settings.

16 Applicators PatternCoat

Setting Application Width
CAUTION: Adjust the application width only when the applicator is heated.
Otherwise cold material will damage the applicator.
1. Release piston rod clamp (2).
2. Use the adjusting ring (1) to adjust the application width. Ensure that the
adjusting ring clicks into place.
NOTE: The adjusting device is set at the factory such that the lower
edge of the piston just reveals a groove (3) when the adjusting ring is
locked in place. This effectively seals the next groove. If the application
width deviates 3 mm during application: Adjust the adjusting device
again. Refer to Changing Direction of Application (page 7, step 6.).
3. Tighten the piston rod clamp.
