Northern Brewer DarkStar 2.0 User manual

Dark Star® 2.0 is a whole new beast of a burner. Faster full-volume boil. A bigger, better built-in wind guard.
Easy to use and loaded with 65,000 BTU’s of brewing power for better beer in a fraction of the time.
LIGHTING THE BURNER
1. Ensure the regulator is fully closed and turn the air damper until it is
about halfway open.
2. Turn on the gas by twisting the gas cylinder valve counter-
clockwise for one full rotation.
3. Using long-handled matches or a lighter, light the burner
through the ignition hole while slowly opening the regulator.
4. If the burner does not ignite, close the regulator and allow
residual gas to disperse before making a second attempt.
Note: Locate the gas cylinder away from the burner to ensure it is
not subjected to radiant heat.
ADJUSTING HEAT OUTPUT
1. To increase heat output, turn the regulator counter-clockwise.
Clockwise rotation will decrease heat output.
2. Use the regulator and air damper to fine-tune heat output once
the burner has ignited.
TURNING THE BURNER OFF
With the flame still operating, turn the valve on the gas cylinder
“OFF”. Allow the flame to burn down until all remaining gas in the
hose has been used. Turn the gas controls on the regulator “OFF”
USE
CLEANING
Once the burner has cooled, use soapy water with mild detergent
to wipe down all surfaces.
NOTE: Do not allow water in burner outlets. Do not submerge the
burner. Do not use abrasive cleaners or bleach.
MAINTENANCE
– Periodically check for leaks using the soapy water method. If any
signs of weakness are detected on the hose or regulator, replace
immediately.
– If the burner flame is unstable, changes color from blue to yellow,
or has a distinct smell, take the burner to your local appliance-
repair shop immediately for inspection.
CARE
ASSEMBLY
CONNECTION TO BURNER
Thread the male-end fitting of the Gas Control Assembly into the
burner Venturi Tube. Hand-tighten—overtightening will strip the
threads of the Venturi Tube.
NOTE: Once connected, the gas control assembly does not need to
be removed for storage.
CONNECTION TO PROPANE GAS CYLINDER
– Ensure the gas cylinder and regulator are fully closed, in the OFF
position. Attach the regulator-end of the Gas control Assembly to
the cylinder and tighten.
– Turn the gas cylinder counter-clockwise one full turn. Check the
cylinder for leaks with soapy water. If a leak is detected, shut off
the gas and re-tighten all connections.

– Do not leave this burner unattended while it is lit or heating.
– Monitor the burner when hot and after use (temperatures
above 100°F/38°C). Heated liquid and equipment can remain at
scalding temperatures long after the boil has ended and burner
has been shut off.
– Do not exceed 125 lbs
–Do not use this burner for heating oil or grease.
– Keep children, pets and unauthorized persons away from the
Dark Star® 2.0 Burner at all times.
– Always operate the burner on a level, stable, noncombustible
surface such as brick or concrete. Surfaces not suitable for use
include wood, asphalt or plastic which may burn, blister or melt.
– This burner is for outdoor use only. Do not use in a building,
garage, tent or any other enclosed area. Do not use in or on a
recreational vehicle or boat.
– Do not locate this burner under any overhead construction.
Keep a minimum clearance of 10 ft. (3.05m) from the sides,
front and back of the burner to any construction. Keep the area
clear of any combustible material. Do not use on or under any
apartment or condo balcony or deck.
– Do not allow the flame to roll past the bottom of the brew kettle.
– Never lift or move a full kettle of water onto or off of the Dark
Star® 2.0 Burner.
– Only use the propane tank valve as the gas shutoff. Do not use
the regulator.
– A 20-pound (9 kg) propane cylinder should be used with this burner.
The LP-gas supply cylinder used must have a protective collar and
must be constructed and marked in accordance with the specifications
for LP-gas cylinders of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT),
cylinders, spheres and tubes for the transportation of Dangerous
Goods. Do not store a spare LP-gas cylinder indoors, or under or
near the Dark Star® 2.0 Burner. Never fill the cylinder beyond 80%
full. For proper vapor withdrawal, the 20 lb. (9 kg) cylinder should
be used in the proper upright position. Cylinder must be turned off
while not in use. Failure to follow these instructions and warnings
could result in fire or explosion which could cause property damage,
personal injury or death.
– Keep the gas supply hose away from heated surfaces at all times.
–Ensure all connections are tightly secured before each use.
– Check for gas leaks before each use—this can be done by
applying soapy water and looking for bubbles.
– This burner gets dangerously hot while in use. Use well-insulated
protective gloves, clothing and boots during operation for
protection from hot surfaces or splatter from hot liquids. Safety
goggles are also recommended to protect you from splatter.
–Allow the burner to cool to 100°F (38°C) before moving or storing.
– The installation of this burner must conform with local codes or,
in the absence of local codes, with the National Fuel Gas Code,

Standard for Recreational Vehicles, ANSI A119.2/NFPA 1192 and
the Recreational Vehicle Code, CSA z240 RV Series
– If you smell gas: Shut off gas to the burner, extinguish any open
flame, and if odor continues, keep away from the burner and
gas cylinder and immediately call your fire department.
– Never use a gas cylinder if it shows signs of dents, gouges,
bulges, fire damage, erosion, leakage, excessive rust, or other
forms of visible external damage. The cylinder may be hazardous
and should be checked by a qualified liquid propane supplier.
– If a fire should occur, keep away from the burner and immediately
call your Fire department.
– When burner is in use, have a type BC or ABC fire extinguisher
readily available. A type BC or ABC fire extinguisher may, in
some circumstances, contain the fire.
– DO NOT use external electrical sources with this burner.
– Do not attempt to disconnect the regulator hose assembly while
burner is in operation.
– When burner use is complete, always turn the LP cylinder valve
OFF first, then turn the regulator control valve OFF. Turning
the cylinder OFF first allows remaining gas to flow out of the
regulator hose assembly before the regulator control valve is
turned OFF.
