TheSkyFireLCUallowstheconnectionof1s/2sLipobatteries,2sLiFePObatteries,3‐6s
NiMHbatteriesoraBECwithavoltagebetween3.2Vand8.5VtosupplytheLCUaswellas
the9lightchannels.ThecorrespondingsupplypinoftheMPXconnectorismarkedwith
“+LCU”.
Theoperationofthelightchannelsismostefficientat1sLipo(lowheatingoftheresistors
andverylowsystemweight).
TheadditionalAUXoutputcanbesuppliedwiththesamevoltage.Forthis,simplyconnect
thesamebatterytotheappropriatesupplypin,markedwith"AUX”.Thenthe9light
channelsandAUXoutputcarrythesamevoltage.
However,itispossibletoconnectaseparatebatteryofhighervoltageupto13.0Vtothe
supplypinoftheAUXoutput(1s/2s/3sLipobatteries,2s/3sLiFePObatteries,3‐9s
NiMhbatteriesoraBECwithavoltagebetween3.2Vand13.0V).Thisallowsoperationof
afterburnerrings,12VLEDstripsorotherexternalconsumerswithhighervoltages,whileit
wouldnotmakesenseforthelightchannels1‐9duetothelowvoltagelevelofindividual
LEDs.
IMPORTANT:Voltagesupto13.0VsupplymustonlybeconnectedtotheAUXoutput
(+AUX)andnottotheLCUitself(+LCU)!
ThemaximumoperatingvoltageoftheLCUitself(+LCU)is8.5V
DonotconnectanyotherbatterytechnologiesthanthoselistedabovetotheSkyFireLCU.
ThebatterytypeusedmustbeabsolutelyprogrammedwheninstallingtheSkyFireLCUto
allowareliabledeepdischargeandbatterytestfunction,see"ProgrammingMode"!After
programming,theSkyFireLCUmonitorsthebatteryandprotectsagainstdeepdischarge.In
additionthebatteryconditioncanbecheckedusingthebatterytestfunction.
Ifthevoltageoftheprogrammedbatteryiscritical,theSkyFireLCUturnsoffafterafast,red
FlashsequenceoftheMODELED(Error)andcanonlybeputbackintooperationbyagain
pressingthepowerbutton
IfdifferentbatterieswithdifferentvoltagelevelsareconnectedtothesupplyoftheLCUand
theAUXoutput,bothbatterieswillbemonitoredaftersuccessfulprogramming!
Thefollowinginstructionsmustbeobservedforsafeoperation.
‐Allconnectingcablesshouldberoutedinsuchawaythattheydonotcomeincontactwith
movingorhotpartsofthemodel(e.g.servos,rodsorsilencers).
‐TheSkyFireLCUmustbeprotectedfromhumidityandmoisture.

Batteryrecommendation
Thefollowingbatterycapacitiesarerecommendedforonehourofcontinuousoperation,
undertheassumptionthatoneLEDisconnectedtoeachoutputincontinuousoperation.If
severalLEDsareusedinflashmodeorhaveashorterbatterylife,asmallercapacitycanbe
chosen.

Connectionofthebattery
ThebatteryisconnectedthroughaMPXhigh‐currentconnectortotheSkyFireLCU.Itshould
benotedthatdifferentbatterieswithdifferentvoltagelevelscanbeconnectedtothe
variousPLUS‐Pins(Seeschematiconpage4).
IfabatterywithMPXhighcurrentsocketandconventionaloccupancyisconnected(all
PLUS‐pinsoftheconnectoraresolderedtothebatteryPLUS),LCUandAUXoutputwill
automaticallyoperateatthesamevoltage.
Payattentiontothecorrectpolarity:PLUS=RED,MINUS=BLACK.TheMPXconnectorsto
beusedarelabelledwith+and‐.Thecorrectpolaritymustbecheckedagainbeforethe
firststartup.
TheSkyFireLCUisnotreversepolarityprotected!

FortheoperationoftheLCU,connectthesignalinput1(Master)tothereceiverusingthe
suppliedpatchcable(yellow‐red‐brown)
Ifdesired,alsoconnectthesignalinput2(AUX)tothereceiver.
TogetfamiliarwiththefunctioningoftheSkyFireLCU,youcanconnectittoaservotester,
ofcourse.
Thesignalinputsaregalvanicallycompletelyisolatedfromthereceivercircuitsothat
perturbationsviatheconnectioncabletothereceiverareexcluded.
Ifthereceiversignalisdetectedandhasnoerrors,theblueLEDsofthesignalinputslightup
permanently.
Ifthereisnosignal(noreceiverconnectedorinvalidsignal/faultycable)theBlueLEDsof
theaffectedsignalinputdonotlightup.
IftheblueLEDsofthesignalinputsflash,thequalityofreceptionshouldbechecked(see
page10).
Ifthereisnosignalforabout30min,theSkyFireLCUturnsoffandcanonlybeputbackinto
operationbyvalidsignalatsignalinput2(AUX).

terminalattheflattenedcorner.Fourconnectionsare
availablehereonlyforstabilityreasons,plusandminusare
eachpresentinduplicate,butmustbeconnectedtothe
powersupplyonce.
IfseveralLEDsareconnectedinparalleltoanoutput,
thePLUSlinescanbecombined.
DuetothelargecurrentcarryingcapacityofSkyFireLCUtheoutputsaredesignedassocket
(female),sothatashortcircuitisnotpossiblethroughaccidentalcontact.Theconnectionof
LEDstakesplaceviatheprovidedpinbar.Foreasysolderingofthelines,insertthebarinto
thesocketoftheSkyFireLCU.
Nevertheless,ifthecontactviaseparateplugsforeachchannellightispreferred,the
optionalavailableconnectorkitcanbeused.

OnlyconnectLEDstotheSkyFireLCU,iftheoutputshavebeenprogrammed.Thisprevents
fusingoftheLEDswhichmighthaveonlybeendesignedforflashmode(possiblehigher
current)atanoutputwhichisstillprogrammedtocontinuouslight.
Connectingafterburnerringsandandexternalconsumers
TheSkyFireLCUallowstheconnectionofvoltagecontrolledafterburnerringstoAUXoutput
forafterburnersimulationinEDFandturbinemodels.Alsoself‐developedafterburnerrings,
individualLEDsor12VLEDstripscanbecontrolledwithanafterburnereffect,aslongas
theycanbeoperatedatavoltageof3.2V‐13.0V(AUXoutput).Themaximumcurrentof
AUXoutputis8A,soitisalsopossibletoconnectseveralafterburnerringsinparallel.
Atotalof10different,original,full‐randomlygeneratedafterburnereffectsareavailable.
Itisalsopossible,toswitchexternalconsumersthroughAUXoutput.Forthis,itis
programmedtoon/offoperationinsteadofafterburnersimulation.

Thevaluescanbeusedbothforoperationdirectlyatabatteryandforoperationatthe
SkyFireLCU.Alsopayattentiontotherequiredpower‐ratingoftheresistor.
Forchoosingthesupplygenerallyconsider:Thevoltageshouldbeassmallaspossible,
becauseLEDsdonotneedmorethan3,5V(red/yellowonly2,4V).Everythingabovethat
voltagehastobeconvertedintoheatintheseries‐resistor.Thatiswhytheoperationat
3,6V/4,8V(3s/4sNiMh)or3,7V(2sLipo)hastobepreferred.
OperationofSkyFireLCU
Startsequence
IfyoupressthepowerbuttonoftheSkyFireLCU,youwillalwaysobservethefollowing
behaviorofthe10orangestatusLEDs:
1xflashlightsequence Theelectronicisstarted.
Pause1secofpause.
NowtheSkyFireLCUisreadytooperate.Theoutputscannowbeactivatedthroughaswitch
orproportionalslideofyourtransmitteroralternativelyviaaservo‐tester.Whenexactely
theoutputsshouldbeactivated,thismustbedefinedinprogrammingmode.

ThebatterytestfunctioncanbestartedatanytimebybrieflypressingtheSetbutton.
Duringthebatterytest(about3seconds)theconnectedmodellightingisdisabled.The

TheMODELEDjumpstogreenifthestateofchargeis>40%,toOrangeifthestateof
chargeis<40%.
Ifthebatteryvoltagefallsunderacriticalthresholdvoltageforseveralseconds(depending
ontheconnectedandprogrammedbatterytype),theSkyFireLCUturnsoffcompletely,in
ordertoavoidadeepdischargeofthebatteryandthustopreventdamageandcanonlybe
putbackintooperationbypressingagainthepowerbutton.
Checkreceptionquality
Ifthemonitoringofthereceptionquality(ReceptionQualityObservation,RQO)was
activatedandprogrammed,theSkyFireLCUpermanentlymonitorsthesignalsofthe
receiverandwarnsofreceptionproblems.
PresstheSetbutton.Afterthebatterytestfunction(MODELEDshowstrafficlight
sequencegreen‐Orange‐red)thereceptionqualityisdisplayed(MODELEDwilllightblue).

Averyimportantandusefulfeatureistheindicationofsignalinterferenceduringflight.If
themodelisinFailSafe‐modeduetosignalinterference,theSkyFireLCUstepsintothe
emergencylightingmode.AlloutputsoftheSkyFireLCUblinkveryfast,followedbyashort
breakevery2seconds.Thisbehaviorisexactlyofthesamelengthlikethefault(theFailSafe
phase),butatleast2seconds.
IMPORTANT:
Thedisplayofreceptionqualityandsignalfailuresisanindicationforpossibleoptimizations
ofthereceivingsystemorofitsset‐up/orientation.Thenotificationsarenoguaranteefor
anoptimalreceptionandsafeoperationofthereceivingsystem.
CheckreceptionqualitywithDual‐Receiversystems
Ifadual‐receiversystemisusedinthemodel,connectthetwoinputsofSkyFireLCUtoeach
oneofthetworeceivers.TheSkyFireLCUrecognizesthedifferentmeasurementresultsof
thetwoinputsandthendisplaysthequalityofreceptiontwiceinarow.First,forinput1,
thenforinput2(Therespectiveinputflashesduringthequalitydisplay).
Thismakesitpossibletooptimizethelocationofeachreceiver/antennaintermsof
receptionquality.Todothis,checkthereceivingqualityregularly.

Stand‐Alonemode
This"independentoperationmode"enablestheoperationofthelightingmodel,evenifthe
receivingsystemisnotturnedon(e.gexhibitions)mayormaynotbeturnedon(e.g.during
competitivebuildingrating).InStandalonemodetheMODELEDlightspink.
Activatealloutputsthroughyourtransmitterswhichshouldbeconstantlyactiveandthen
keeptheSetbuttonpressedforatleast2seconds.Pressingthebuttonforlongwillalwaysbe
confirmedthroughrapidflashingoftheMODELEDtwice.
TheMODELEDlightspermanentlypink,theStandalonemodeisactiveandthe
electronicsnolongerrespondstothesignalreceiver!
LeavetheStandalonemodeandalsopresstheSetbuttonfor2seconds.
Programmingmode
ThefollowingexplainshowsimplytheSkyFireLCUmustbeprogrammed.
Startingtheprogrammingmode
ConnectthepowersupplyandthereceiverorservotestertotheSkyFireLCU.
TurnontheSkyFireLCU.KeeptheSetbuttonpermanentlypressed,beforethe
welcomingsequenceiscompleted.
Startoftheprogrammingmodeisdisplayedthrougha3secondlongwhiteflashingofthe
MODELEDandthroughfastflashingofallorangestatusLEDs.Releasethebuttonagain
whentheflashingstarts.Youarenowinprogrammingmode.
Step1‐Selectbatterytype
ThestartofthebatterytypeprogrammingisillustratedbyasequenceoftrafficlightsMODE
LED(green‐Orange‐red,"charging‐statustrafficlight").
Atthebeginning,youwillneedtoprogramthebatterytypetobeused(lipo,LiFePO,
"Other").Connectthechargedbatterytothemoduleinthefirstprogramming.
Bypressing("zapping")thesetbuttonforashortwhileyoucanswitchbetweenthethree
variants,forsignalingtwoofthestatusLEDslightorange.Savethedesiredtypebypressing
theSet buttonfor2seconds.Thenumberofcellsusedisautomaticallydetected.
Ifyouselect"Other"(e.g.forBECsupply)nosafetyshutdownoccurs,thebatteryvoltagein6
levelsfrom3.2to8.5Visonlydisplayed.

IfLCUandAUXoutputaresuppliedwithdifferentbatteries(E.g.:LCU1slipo,2slipoAUX),
thisisdetected!Duringthefirstrun,thebatteryoftheLCU(ofthelightchannels)is
programedandinafurtherrun,theAUXbatteryisprogramed.
Iftheprogrammingofthebatterytypeiscompleted,thiswillbesavedimmediately.Ifonly
thebatterytypeisreprogrammed,youdonothavetogothroughtheotherprogramming
mode.TurntheSkyFireLCUoffandonagain.
Ifaprogrammingstep,suchasthebatterytypeprogrammingshouldNOTberun/
changed,thenthisprogrammingstepcanbeskippedbywaiting5secondswithoutpressing
thebutton.
Step2‐Programmingthelightchannels
ThefirstorangeStatusLEDstartsblinkingnowandwaitsfortheprogrammingofthe
activationpointandlightsequence.Bypushing("zapping")thesetbuttonthevarious
continuouslight,flashandbeaconfunctionscanbeselectedandthecorrespondingorange
statusLEDandtheLEDconnectedtothelightchanneldisplaythesequence.
Activationpoint Storingtheactivationpointandlight‐
sequenceforeachoutput.
BypressingtheSet‐buttonyoucanzapthroughtheflashsequences.Movetheswitchor
theproportionalslideronthetransmittertothepositionatwhichtheselectedlightchannel
shallbeactive.ThensavefunctionandactivationpointbypressingtheSet‐button for2
seconds.
Pressingthebuttonfortwosecondslongwillalwaysbeconfirmedthrougharapidflashingof
theMODELEDtwice.Repeatthisprocedureforall9lightchannels.
Foreachflashsequence,youcanchooseifitshouldflashatthebeginning,sometime
delayed,orlongtimedelayed.Thisallowsyoutoflashthreepositionsonthemodel
successively.

Step3‐Programmingthepausetime
Inthisstep,alloutputsandorangeStatusLEDslightupastheywereprogrammedin
advance.Bypressing("zapping")thesetbuttonthepausetimebetweentheflash
sequencescannowbechangedin5steps,sothattheflashsequencescanbeindividually
optimizedforeachmodelaircraft.
BypressingtheSet‐buttonforshortyoucanzapthroughthepause‐timeoptions.The
MODELEDflashesquicklyOrangeatdifferentratesinordertoillustratethespeed.Savethe
desiredpausetimebypressingtheSetbutton for2seconds.
Step4‐ProgrammingtheAUXoutput
TheorangeStatusLEDNo.10"AUX"lightsupandwaitsforprogrammingtheactivation
pointandlightfunction.Proceedexactlythesamewayasintheprogrammingofthe9light
channels.
Incontrasttothe9lightchannels,theAUXoutputofferslong‐termoperation(on/off
operation)or9differentafterburnersimulations.

Step5‐Programmingthereception‐qualitymonitoring
Inthisstep,themonitoringofthereceptionquality(RQO)isactivatedandprogrammed.The
orangeStatusLEDsinthemiddlelightupabovetheantennatheremainingstatusLEDs
display"emittingradiowaves"inordertoillustratetheRQOprogramming.TheMODE‐LED
lightsupcontinuouslyblue(DisplayoftheRQO‐mode).

Toenablethemonitoringofthereceptionquality(RQO),theFailSafemodeofthelighting
channelofthereceivermustbeactivated!AsasignallevelfortheFailSafeMode,the
“deepest”possible(‐100%)shallbeprogrammedinthetransceiver.Itisimportantthatthe
FailSafelevelissmallerthanthesmallestpointofactivationofthelightchannels,otherwise
thenormaloperationmodecouldnotbedistinguishedfromtheFailsafemode.
TheMODELEDcontinuouslylightsupblue(RQOdisplaymode)andflashesoncepersecond
shortlyredorgreen:
Redflashingmeansthattheactualsignalvalueofthereceiverisnotsuitableasafail‐safe
signalbecausethisvalueisintherangeofpre‐programmedactivationpointsofthelight
channels.
Ifyouexittheprogrammingmodenow,themonitoringofthereceptionqualityisswitched
OFF!
Greenflashingmeansthattheactualsignalvalueofthereceiverissuitableasafail‐safe
signal.
Ifyouexittheprogrammingmodenow,themonitoringofthereceptionqualityisswitched
ON!
ChangetheFailSafeLevelinthetransceiver(recommendation:‐100%)untiltheMODELED
flashesgreen.
SavetheFailSafelevelandthenactivatethereception‐monitoringmodebypressingtheSet
button for2seconds.
Ifthereceiver‐monitoringmode(RQO)isnotused,terminatetheprogrammingmodeby
turningofftheLCU(ifthereception‐monitoringwasnotpreviouslyactive)ordisablethe
receivingmonitoringbydeactivatingtheFailSafemodeinthetransmitterandfinishingthe
programmingmodeofSkyFireLCUwithredflashingLED.
Afterfinishingtheprogrammingmode,theSkyFireLCUrestarts.
DONE‐TheSkyFireLCUisnowfullyprogrammedandcanbeused.

TheSkyFireLCUcanbeeasilyresettofactorysettings.
TurnontheSkyFireLCU.Keepthebuttonpressedtillthewelcomingflashlightsequenceis
ended.Sincethislasts2secondsyouhaveenoughtimeafterconnectingthebatterytopress
thebuttonandhold.Thestartoftheprogrammingmodeisindicatedbya3secondlong,very
fastflashingofallLEDs.Keepthebuttonpermanentlypressedalsoduringthis
sequenceuntiltheSkyFireLCUrestartsagainandthewelcomingsequenceshowsagain.You
cannowreleasethebutton.Thesettingsareresettofactorysettings.

Optotronixreservestherighttoshareincaseofwarrantythedeviceagainstanequivalent
productifarepairisnotpossible.
Thiswarrantyexpireswhenthemoduletakesdamageresultingfrommisuse,becausethe
manufacturerhasnoinfluenceonadherencetothemanual,properinstallation,use,
maintenanceandoperation,noliabilityisassumedforthenon‐properoperationofthe
SkyFireLCU.Thecustomerhimselfisresponsible,becausethisproductisinstalledintothe
