CAUTION: Please read!
Children should use this telescope with adult supervision.
Do not insert or drop anything into the optical tube.
Do not attempt to clean the optics. If dirty, please contact the library.
Do not touch the mirrors or the eyepiece lens glass.
Do not look at the sun with this telescope, it is not designed for safe solar
viewing. Severe and permanent eye damage will occur if the sun is observed
with this telescope!
The basics of the Library Telescope Program were originally conceived by the New Hampshire
Astronomical Society, with the St. Louis Astronomical Society adding numerous helpful resources
to the program. The Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory greatly appreciates their efforts in
establishing a library telescope program.

Transporting the Telescope
•Carry the telescope with one hand using the handle and the other grabbing the platform and
base together. An alternate way is to use the “football hold” as pictured below.
•Try not to bump the zoom eyepiece or the finder scope.
•Place the telescope on the car seat so that the eyepiece and the black finder do not bump into the
seat back or the seat buckle.
•Buckle the telescope in the seat as you would a person, as pictured below.

Care and Maintenance
•Be sure to store the telescope with the dust caps on. Please do not touch the lens or mirrors as
it’s very easy to scratch the coatings.
•Do not attempt to clean the mirrors or eyepiece. Contact the library if they seem dirty.
•Do not attempt to align the mirrors. If it seems that the telescope needs adjustment, please
contact the library.
Getting Started
•Please read the instructions and practice with the telescope inside before you take it out in the
dark.
•The finder scope was aligned by staff before checkout, but if you need to adjust it, it is
especially helpful to align the finder scope during the day.
•Always place the telescope on a table or sturdy chair.
•This is a manual telescope. You can watch the object move through your field of view (what
you see through the eye piece) and reposition the telescope as necessary. At higher
magnifications, the field of view becomes narrower and objects appear to move across the field
of view faster.
•If you find that the telescope tube is either too hard to move or does not stay in place, use the
altitude adjustment tension knob to find the right level of tension.

How to Focus
•Remove the dust caps from the eyepiece and telescope tube.
•Turn either one of the two textured wheels on the focuser. See photo on left on next page.
•Each zoom setting of the eyepiece requires a slightly different focus.
•Each person may need a different focus setting.
•If you wear glasses, first try looking into the eyepiece while wearing them. You may find that
you do not need to use them. People with severe astigmatism will generally obtain better views
while wearing glasses.
How to Zoom
The zoom eyepiece has a range of focal lengths from 8 to 24 mm. The larger the focal length,
the lower the magnification, and the wider the field of view. Low magnification shows a larger
area of sky in the eyepiece, making finding and centering an object much easier.
•Start by using the telescope’s lowest power to locate and center an object. See photo on left on
next page.
•Rotate the barrel so that the 24 mm focal length setting aligns with the white triangle.
•Twist the barrel to change magnifications.
•Refocus the eyepiece.
•As the eyepiece zooms to higher magnifications, the field of view decreases.

Meet the Finder Scope
(EZ Finder II, Red Dot Finder)
A finder scope helps you point the telescope with accuracy. The EZ Finder II works by projecting a
tiny red dot onto a screen mounted in the front of the unit, so that when you look through the screen,
the red dot will appear to float in space. When the EZ Finder is properly aligned with the telescope,

an object that is centered on the EZ Finder’s red dot will also appear in the center of the telescope’s
eyepiece.
How to Align the Finder Scope
1. Rotate the eyepiece so that the 24 mm mark aligns with the arrow on the barrel. This setting
has the widest field of view, making it easier to find an object.

2. Checking the alignment of the EZ Finder is easiest during the day. Look along the telescope’s
tube to point the telescope in the general direction of an object ON THE GROUND such as a
distant streetlight, top of a chimney, or a distant mountain peak.
3. Turn on the EZ Finder using the power knob and turn the dial until the red dot is visible. The
intensity of the dot can be adjusted by turning the power knob. Use the dimmest possible
setting that allows you to see the dot without difficulty.
4. Move the telescope so that the red dot is centered on the object.
5. The object should be in the eyepiece or right outside of its field of view.
If it is not centered
a. First center the object in the eyepiece.
b. Without moving the telescope, use the vertical and horizontal adjustments on the finder
scope to center the red dot on the object.
6. Use the EZ Finder to point the telescope at the object in the sky you wish to view.
7. When not in use and at the end of your observing session, be sure to turn the power knob
counterclockwise until it clicks off!
Don’t see a red dot while the power knob is on? To change battery, remove the cover from
the finder and replace the coin-type CR2032 battery using the spare found in the gear bag.

What to Expect
Take plenty of time to let your eyes adjust to the darkness. Don’t expect to see color as you do in
NASA photos as our eyes are not sensitive enough to see color in deep-sky objects; many will look
like dim gray smudges. As you become more experienced and your observing skills get sharper, you
will be able to seek out more and more subtle details and structure. Like many reflector telescopes,
the image in the eyepiece is rotated. When looking at star charts you will have to keep this in mind.
Packing Up
1. Bring the focuser all the way down using the focus wheels.
2. Replace dust caps on the eyepiece and telescope tube.
3. Turn the EZ Finder off.
4. Return the constellation guide, flashlight, user manual, and any batteries to the gear bag.
5. Return the telescope to the Check Out desk at the library no later than thirty minutes prior to
closing on the day the telescope is due.
