1 Introduction
2 Installing the USB interface drivers
How to install the USB interface drivers:
䡵Log on to the PC with administrator rights.
䡵Connect the OTT IrDA-Link USB to a USB interface on the
PC ➝the PC recognizes the new hardware and displays
the message*: "Found new hardware. OTT IrDA-Link
USB" ➝the "Found New Hardware Wizard" opens.
䡵Click on "Cancel".
䡵Ignore error message*: "A problem occurred during
hardware installation. Your new hardware might not work
properly".
䡵Open file "CDM x.xx.xx.exe" (e.g.CDM 2.08.02) on the
"OTT IrDA-Link USB Software" CD-ROM (Directory:
…/Driver/EXE) ➝a window with an automatic installation
program opens and installs the USB interface driver.
䡵After completion of the installation process, the message*:
"Your new hardware is installed and ready to use"
appears.
䡵The OTT IrDA-Link USB can now be used in conjunction
with the OTT operating programs and with the OTT
Hydras 3. See Chapter 6.

The procedure described here is based on the Microsoft
Windows XP operating system. It applies to the other
Windows operating system versions with minor changes.
To use the OTT IrDA-Link USB optical reading head on a PC,
special USB interface drivers are required. These USB inter-
face drivers must be installed on the first use of the reading
head.
OTT Hydromet uses drivers from "Future Technology Devices
International Limited" (FTDI) for this purpose. The drivers
have two components: "USB Serial Port (COMx)" and "USB
Serial Converter".
You can use the USB interface drivers on any current stan-
dard PC with a USB interface and an operating system from
Microsoft Windows 2000.
3 Checking the installation (if required)
How to check the USB interface driver installation:
䡵Connect the OTT IrDA-Link USB to a USB interface on the
PC.
䡵Select "Start" ➝"Control Panel" ➝"System" ➝"Hard-
ware" ➝"Device Manager".
䡵Check whether the entries shown in red in the Figure
shown here are present. The number of the "USB Serial
Port (COMx)" can be anything.
䡵If any entries are missing ➝reinstall the USB interface
drivers.
䡵Close Device Manager.
Note
䊳The entries can only be viewed with an OTT IrDA-Link
USB connected!
4 Changing the COM port numbers used (as required)
How to change the COM port number of the USB interface driver "USB Serial Port":
䡵Connect the OTT IrDA-Link USB to a USB interface on the
PC.
䡵Select "Start" ➝"Control Panel" ➝"System" ➝"Hard-
ware" ➝"Device Manager".
䡵Click on "USB Serial Port (COMx)" using the right mouse
button and select "Properties".
䡵Select "Port Settings" ➝"Advanced...".
䡵Enter the required (virtual) "COM port number" .
䡵Click on "OK".

5 Uninstalling the USB interface drivers
How to uninstall the USB interface drivers:
䡵Connect the OTT IrDA-Link USB to a USB interface on the
PC.
䡵Select "Start" ➝"Control Panel" ➝"System" ➝"Hard-
ware" ➝"Device Manager".
䡵Click on "USB Serial Port (COMx)" using the right mouse
button and select "Uninstall".
䡵Confirm "Warning: You are about to uninstall this device
from your system." with "OK".
䡵Click on "USB Serial Converter" using the right mouse
button and select "Uninstall".
䡵Confirm "Warning: You are about to uninstall this device
from your system." with "OK".
䡵Close Device Manager.
Notes
䊳Follow this sequence for uninstalling!
䊳If the OTT IrDA-Link USB is connected again, the opera-
ting system will install the USB interface drivers automatic-
ally without asking. The operating system saves installati-
on files during the initial installation in the Windows
system directory for this purpose.

How to use the OTT IrDA-Link USB optical reading head:
LogoSens/DuoSens and Orpheus Mini
operating program
䡵Connect the OTT IrDA-Link USB to a USB interface on the
PC.
䡵Start the operating program.
䡵Select the communication path "IrDA - OTT IrDA-Link" to
read and program. The operating program sets the requi-
red COM port (COMx:) and the appropriate transmission
speed automatically.
Note: If two or more OTT IrDA-Link USBs are connected
to a PC, a selection window appears first with the serial
numbers and the allocated COM ports ➝select the requi-
red OTT IrDA-Link USB.
䡵The functions "Read" and "Program" are now available.
Hydras 3 user software
䡵Connect the OTT IrDA-Link USB to a USB interface on the
PC.
䡵Start Hydras 3.
䡵Mark the station and select the menu "Communication,
Read/Operate".
䡵Select communication path "IrDA OTT IrDA-Link [USB],
COMx, 19200Bd". The operating program sets the requi-
red COM port (COMx:) and the transmission speed of
19200 bit/s automatically (can be changed if required).
Note: If two or more OTT IrDA-Link USBs are connected
to a PC, a selection window appears first with the serial
numbers and the allocated COM ports ➝select the requi-
red OTT IrDA-Link USB.
䡵The functions "Read data" and "Operating" are now
available.
