P5045 Micro Telephone Recorder
Operating Manual
Congratulations on your purchase of the Micro Telephone Recorder. Your Micro Telephone Recorder
represents a revolution in telephone recording. The compact attractive unit clearly records telephone
conversations for later reference. The recorder is automatic and will only record when your telephone is
off-hook. This unit incorporates exciting new features such as extended recording time and a switchable
voice controlled system (VOX). With VOX it is possible to connect this recorder to multi-line or electronic
telephone systems. Please review the following instructions carefully so that you may fully enjoy your new
recorder’s functions. Contact information for technical support is given at the end of this document.
NOTE: It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that conversations are only recorded in accordance
with the law of the jurisdiction where the equipment is utilized.
Features:
•Two way automatic telephone recording
•Revolutionary compact size
•Direct telephone line connection
•Voice controlled system (VOX)
•Two speed recording
•Tape counter
•Recording indicator
•Pause control
•Uses 2 x AA batteries (not included)
Installing the Batteries
•Open the battery compartment by sliding the cover in the direction of the arrow.
•Insert two new AA batteries (UM-3) with the correct polarity as shown in the battery compartment.
•Replace the battery cover.
Changing the Batteries
If the sound becomes distorted or if the tape is moving slowly, replace the batteries with new ones. For best
results we recommend the use of new alkaline or lithium cells. Recording time with new alkaline batteries
is approximately seven hours. Life of the batteries differs depending on the use. Remove the batteries when
the equipment is not in use for a long period. Dispose of exhausted batteries properly.

•Press the STOP/EJECT button to open the cassette compartment cover.
•Insert a microcassette with the tape surface up.

alignment (by inserting a pen into the hub of the microcassette’s take-up spool and turn slightly). Then
retry inserting the microcassette.
•Before inserting the microcassette tape, make sure that the tape is not loose. When the tape is loose, it
can sometimes become cut or wound around the capstan.
Installation for Recording Telephone Calls
•Connect one end of the supplied telephone cable to the recorder’s jack labeled with the telephone icon
(), and the other end to the telephone wall jack.
•The Micro Telephone Recorder is now ready for operation.
To Record a Telephone Call

•Ensure that a blank tape is properly in place. You may use any commercially available tape length up
to a MC-90 microcassette which can provide over 90 minutes of recording per side.
•Select the tape speed. (see the “Tape Speed” section below for details)
•Using the Voice Control System switch (VOX) select “ON”. See the “How to Record with VOX
(Voice Control System)” below to ensure the Voice Control System is set properly.
•Press the recorder’s REC button (the PLAY button will automatically go down as well).
•Lift the telephone handset and observe tape movement. This indicates recording is in progress.
•Place handset on-hook (hang up) and observe that recording stops.
•The recorder is now in the stand-by mode and will automatically record when the phone is answered
and it will stop recording when the handset is placed back on-hook (hung-up). Please note that this
unit will record telephone conversations when any extension telephone connected to the phone line is
in use, not only the telephone with which the recorder may share a telephone jack.
•To put the unit in pause while in the REC mode, move the PAUSE Switch down to the lower position.
A red indicator will appear in the small PAUSE window. To resume recording, move PAUSE Switch
to the upper position.
•Press the STOP button to disengage the recording mode for long periods. Leaving the record mode
engaged for extended periods when the recorder is not in use may kink or damage the tape.
NOTE: It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that conversations are only recorded in accordance
with the law of the jurisdiction where the equipment is utilized.
Recording with the Built-in Microphone.
•Disconnect the supplied telephone cable if it is connected.
•Select the tape speed. (see the “Tape Speed” section below for details)
•Ensure that the VOX mode switch is set to the OFF position unless you desire voice controlled
recording (see “How to Record with VOX (Voice Control System) below for more details)
•Press the REC button and PLAY button simultaneously.
•The red REC indicator will illuminate.
•Recording will be made with the built-in microphone. Adjust the VOLUME control to set at a suitable
recording level. Generally, the maximum volume level is best. If the recording level is set too low, you
will have difficulty hearing the recording when it is played back.
•To ensure superior recordings do not block the internal microphone. The internal microphone is
located beneath the series of holes near the VOX control. Fewer obstructions between the microphone
and the sound source will lead to clearer recordings.
How to Record with VOX (Voice Control System)
•Set the VOX mode switch to the ON position.
•Adjust the volume control knob to the desired VOX sensitivity level.
•Press the REC button and the PLAY button simultaneously.
•When the sound is sensed, recording starts automatically . When the sound stops, recording stops
automatically after 3 or 4 seconds.
•Press the STOP button to disengage the recording mode for long periods. Leaving the record mode
engaged for extended periods when the recorder is not in use may kink or damage the tape.
•VOX will respond to any sound equal to or greater than the level set on the volume control, but the
recording level is not changed. To find a suitable activated recording level, please make a test
recording at several sensitivity levels before actual use. WARNING: If you set the VOX sensitivity
level too low, the unit will not activate and you risk missing portions of your intended recording.

Playback
•Set the TAPE SPEED selector to the speed at which the tape has been recorded. (see the “Tape Speed”

•During PLAY mode, press the REW / F.FWD switch to the REW position to rewind the tape at high
speed with sound (REV). Releasing the switch returns to PLAY mode.
Tape Speed
•For normal recording, 2.4 cm/sec speed is recommended. This speed provides good sound quality.
With a C90 microcassette a total of 90 minutes (45 minutes each side) is available.
•For longer recording, use 1.2 cm/sec tape speed. With a C90 microcassette, a total of 3 hours
recording, (90 minutes each side) is available.
•Adjust the SPEED switch to the proper setting for your application. Ensure that you playback the
microcassette at the same speed at which it was recorded for proper playback.
Auto Shut-off
•When the tape comes to an end during REC or PLAY mode, the PLAY and REC button return to the
STOP position automatically. A slight “click” will sound.
•In F.FWD and REW mode, the auto shut-off mechanism does not function. Press the STOP button or
set the REW / F.FWD button to the center position.
Tape Counter
When REC, PLAY, F.FWD or CUE are used, the Tape Counter increases from 001, 002, 003...etc. when it
exceeds 999, it returns to 000. When the REW and REV modes are used, the counter decreases from 999,
998, 997...et. Prior to recording, you may press the RESET button to set the counter to 000.
Using an Earphone
A monophonic earphone may be used for private listening. Insert the 3.5mm mono earphone plug into the
jack labeled with the headphone icon. The speaker will not function when an earphone is attached.
Prevention of Accidental Erasure
•Microcassettes provide “safety lugs” to avoid accidental erasure on both sides. Break the safety lug by
pressing with a screwdriver into the inside, then the REC button cannot be depressed when the
microcassette is inserted in the recorder.
•If you wish to record on the microcassette with which the safety lug is broken, cover the hole with
plastic tape.

Maintenance
Keep the REC / PLAY head clean at all times. For cleaning the head, use a microcassette cleaning cassette
tape or apply head cleaning solvent with a swab.
NOTE: It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that conversations are only recorded in accordance
with the law of the jurisdiction where the equipment is utilized.
