1. Safety Precautions
1.1. General Guidelines
1. IMPORTANTSAFETY NOTICE
There are special components used inthisequipment which are
important for safety. These parts are marked byinthe
SchematicDiagrams, CircuitBoard Layout, Exploded Viewsand
Replacement Parts List. Itisessential that these critical parts
shouldbe replaced with manufacturer’sspecified parts to prevent
shock, fire, or other hazards. Donot modifythe original design
without permission of manufacturer.
2. AnIsolation Transformer shouldalwaysbe used during the
servicing of AC Adaptor whose chassisisnot isolated from the
AC power line. Use atransformer of adequate power rating as this
protects the technician from accidents resulting inpersonal injury
from electrical shocks. Itwill also protect AC Adaptor from being
damaged byaccidental shorting that mayoccur during servicing.
3. When servicing, observe the original lead dress. Ifashort circuit
isfound, replace all parts which have been overheated or
damaged bythe short circuit.
4. After servicing, see to itthat all the protective devices such as
insulation barriers, insulation papers shields are properly
installed.
5. After servicing, make the following leakage current checks to
prevent the customer from being exposed to shock hazards.

2.1. Prevention of Electro StaticDischarge (ESD)to Electrostatically

Sensitive (ES) Devices
Some semiconductor(solidstate) devices canbe damagedeasilybystatic electricity. Such
components commonlyare calledElectrostaticallySensitive (ES) Devices. Examples of typical
ES devices are integratedcircuits and some field-effect transistors and semiconductor"chip"
components. The following techniques shouldbe usedtohelpreduce the incidence of
component damage causedbyelectrostatic discharge (ESD).
1. Immediatelybefore handling anysemiconductor component or
semiconductor-equipped assembly, drainoff anyESDon your
bodybytouching aknownearth ground. Alternatively, obtainand
wear acommerciallyavailabledischarging ESDwrist strap, which
shouldbe removed for potential shock reasons prior to applying
power to the unitunder test.
2. After removing an electrical assemblyequipped with ES devices,
place the assemblyon aconductive surface such as aluminum
foil, to prevent electrostaticcharge buildup or exposure of the
assembly.
3. Use onlyagrounded-tipsoldering iron to solder or unsolder ES
devices.
4. Use onlyan antistaticsolder removal device. Some solder
removal devices not classified as "antistatic(ESDprotected)" can
generate electrical charge sufficient to damage ES devices.
5. Donot use freon-propelled chemicals. These can generate
electrical charges sufficient to damage ES devices.
6. Donot remove areplacement ES device from its protective
package until immediatelybefore you are readyto install it. (Most
replacement ES devices are packaged with leads electrically
shorted together byconductive foam, aluminum foil or
comparableconductive material).
7. Immediatelybefore removing the protective material from the
leads of areplacement ES device, touch the protective material to
the chassisor circuitassemblyinto which the device will be
installed.
CAUTION :
Besure no power isapplied to the chassisor circuit, and observe
all other safetyprecautions.
8. Minimize bodilymotions when handling unpackaged replacement

ES devices. (Otherwise harmless motion such as the brushing
together of your clothes fabricor the lifting of your foot from a
carpeted floor can generate staticelectricity(ESD)sufficient to
damage an ES device).
2.2. Caution for AC Cord / (VJA0940 type)

To prevent electric shock, do not remove the cover. Nouserserviceable parts inside. Refer
servicing toqualifiedservice personnel.
2.2.2. Caution forAC Mains Lead
Foryoursafety, please readthe following text carefully.
This appliance is suppliedwitha mouldedthree-pinmains plug foryoursafetyand convenience.
A 5-ampere fuse is fittedinthis plug.
Shouldthe fuse needtobe replacedplease ensure that the replacement fuse has a rating of 5
amperes and it is approvedbyASTA orBSI toBS1362.
Check forthe ASRA mark orthe BSI mark on the bodyof the fuse.
If the plug contains a removable fuse coveryou must ensure that it is refittedwhenthe fuse is
replaced.
If you lose the fuse cover, the plug must not be useduntil a replacement coveris obtained.
A replacement fuse covercanbe purchasedfromyourlocal Panasonic Dealer.
If the fittedmouldedplug is unsuitable forthe socket outlet inyourhome thenthe fuse should
be removedand the plug cut off and disposedof safety.
There is a dangerof severe electrical shock if the cut off plug is insertedintoany13-ampere
socket.
If a newplug is tobe fittedplease observe the wiring code as shownbelow.
If inanydoubt, please consult a qualifiedelectrician.
2.2.2.1. Important
The wires inthis mains leadare colouredinaccordance withthe following code:
As the colours of the wires inthe mains leadof this appliance maynot correspond withthe
colouredmarkings identifying the terminals inyourplug, proceedas follows:
The wire whichis colouredBLUE must be connectedtothe terminal inthe plug whichis marked
withthe letterN orcolouredBLACK.

The wire whichis colouredBROWN must be connectedtothe terminal inthe plug whichis
markedwiththe letterLorcolouredRED.
Underno circumstances shouldeitherof these wires be connectedtothe earthterminal of the
three pinplug, markedwiththe letterE orthe EarthSymbol.
2.2.2.2. Before use
Remove the ConnectorCoveras follows.
2.2.2.3. Howtoreplace the Fuse
1. Remove the Fuse Cover with ascrewdriver.
2. Replace the fuse and attach the Fuse cover.
2.3. How to Replace the Lithium Battery
The lithiumbattery(ML-621S/F9D) is not suppliedas a service part and must be replacedas part
of the Cassette CoverUnit. (Referto“Disassembly and Assembly Instructions.")

ThisLithium batteryisacritical component. (Type No.:ML-621S/
F9DManufactured byPanasonic.)(Not supplied)
Itmust never be subjected to excessive heat or discharge.
Itmust therefore onlybe fitted inequipment designed specifically

for its use.
Replacement batteries must be of the same type and manufacture.
Theymust be fitted inthe same manner and location as the original
battery, with the correct polaritycontacts observed.
Donot attempt to re-charge the oldbatteryor re-use itfor anyother
purpose.
Itshouldbe disposed of inwaste products destined for burial
rather than incineration.

3.2. About Lead Free Solder (PbF)
Distinction of PbF PCB:
PCBs (manufactured) using leadfree solderwill have a PbF stampon the PCB.
Caution:
-Pb free solder has ahigher melting point than standard solder;
Typicallythe melting point is50-70°F (30-40°C)higher.
Please use ahigh temperature soldering iron. Incase of the
soldering iron with temperature control, please set itto 700±20°F
(370±10°C).
-Pb free solder will tend to splash when heated too high (about
1100°F/600°C).
Whensoldering orunsoldering, please completelyremove all of the solderon the pins orsolder
area, and be sure toheat the soldering points withthe Pbfree solderuntil it melts enough.
