The lightning flash with arrowhead symbol, within
an equilateral triangle, is intended to alert the user
to the presence of uninsulated "dangerous
voltage" within the product's enclosure that may
be of sufficient magnitude to constitute a risk of

angle is intended to alert the user to the presence
of important operating and maintenance (ser-
vicing) instructions in the literature accompanying
the appliance.

Precautions
Before using this unit please read these operating instructions
carefully. Take special care to follow the warnings indicated on the
unititself as well as the safety suggestions listed below.
Afterwards keep them handy for future reference.
Safety
1. Power Source -- The unit should be connected to power supply
only of the type described in the operating instructions or as
marked on the unit.
2. Polarization -- If the unit is equipped with a polarized AC power
plug (a plug having one blade wider than the other), that plug will
tit into the AC outlet only one way. This is a safety feature. If you
are unable to insert,the plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the
plug. If the plug should still fail to fit, contact your electrician to
replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of
the polarized p}ug.

3. Power Cord Protection -- AC power supply cords should be
routed so that they are not likely to he walked on or pinched by
items placed upon o_against them. Never take holdof the plug or
cord if your hand is wet, and always grasp the plug body when
connecting or disconnecting it.
4. Nonuse Periods -- When the unit is not used, turn the power off.
When left unused for a long period of time, the unit should he
unplugged from the household AC outlet.
1. Outdoor Antenna Grounding -if an outside antenna is
connected to the receiver, be sure the antenna system is
grounded so as to provide some protection against voltage
surges and built-up static charges. Section 810 of the National
Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA No. 70-1990, provides information
with respect to proper grounding of the mast and supporting
structure, grounding of the lee@in wire to an antenna discharge
unit, size of grounding conductors, location of antenna-discharge
unit, connection to grounding electrodes, and requirements for
the grounding electrode. See figure below.

2. Water and Moisture -- Do not use this unit near water--for
example, near a bathtub, washbowl, swimming pool, or the like.
Damp basements should also he avoided,
3. Heat -- The unit should be situated away from heat sources such
as radiators and the like.
It also should not be placed in temperatures less than 5°C (41°F)
or greater than 35°C (950F).

Placement
1. Ventilation -- The unit should be situated so that its location or
position does not interfere with its proper ventilation. Allow 10 cm
(4") clearance from the rear of the unit,
2. Foreign Material -- Care should he taken so that objects do not
fall into and liquids are notspilled into the unit. Do not subject this
unit to excessive smoke, dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.
3. Magnetism -- The unit should he situated away from equipment
or devices thatgenerate strong magnetism.
4, Stacking -- Do not place heavy objects, other than system
components, on top of the unit.
5. Surface -- Place the unit on a flat, level surface.
6. Carts and Stands -- The unit should be used only with a cart or
stand that is recommended by the manufacturer. The unit and
cart combination should be moved with care. i
Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven
surfaces may cause the unit and cart combi-
nation to overturn.
7. Wait or Ceiling Mounting -- The unitshould not he mounted to a
wall or ceiling, unless specified in this operating instructions.

Clean the cabinet, panel and controls with a soft cloth lightly
moistened with mild detergent solution. Do not use any type of abrasave pad, scounng powder or solvent
such as alcohol or benzine.
Service
1. Damage Requiring Service -- The unit should be serviced by
qualified service personnel when.
(a) The AC power supply cord or the plug has been damaged; or
(b) Objects have fallen or liquid has been spilled into the unit; or
(c) The unit has been exposed to rain; or
(d) The unit does not appear to operate normally or exhibits a
marked change in performance; or
(e) The unit has been dropped, or the enclosure damaged.
2. Servicing--The user should not attempt to service the unit
beyond that descdpad in the operating instructions, Air other
servicing should he referred to qualified service personnel.

Install this antenna on a wall at a height and direction which
result in best reception.
For best reception sound quality:
An FM outdoor antenna is recommended.
The tack should not contact the internal antenna wire.
Disconnect this antenna if an FM outdoor antenna is installed.

Tuner section
OFM stereo Indicator (STEREO)
This indicator automatically illuminates when an FM stereo
broadcast is being received,
It will not illuminate if the FM mode selector is set to the monaural
mode.
(_) Band indicator (FM, AM)
This indicatorindicates the band selected by usingthe band
selector.
(_)Digital frequency/input display
This display shows the sound source selected by pressing one of
the input selectors. If the "tuner" input selector is pressed, there
will be a change to the frequency after the source is indicated.
(_)Quartz-lock indicator (QUAR'I-Z LOCK)
Thisindicatorilluminates whenthe tuneris preciselytunedto a
broadcaststation.
(_) Memory indicator ([_)
Thisindicator illuminates when the memorybuttonis pressed.
(_)Super bass indicator (BASS)
This indicator illuminates when the super bass functions

These buttons are used for tuning to the desired broadcast

This unit automatically switches to the stereo mode when a
stereo broadcast is received.
This selector is used to select the mode (stereo or monaural) of
FM broadcast signals. (See page 21.)
And this selector is used to reduce interference noise during
recording of an AM broadcast, (Refer to page 31,)

These controls are for compensation of tonal quality. By s_iding
the controls at each of the indicated frequencies in the "+"
direction, the tonal quality is increased, and by sliding them in the
"-" direction, the tonal quality is decreased, (Refer to page 28.)
Remote control signal receptor
Receivesthe signalsfrom the remotecontrol transmitter,

Press this button when using the high bias chromium tape or
equivalent.
Dolby noise-reduction switch (DOLBY NR)
This switch can be used to reduce the amount of the characteris-
tic "hissing" noise heard from the tape.
@Tape deck 1 counter/reset button
(DECK 1 COUNTER/RESET)
This tape Counter shows the amount of tape movement of the
tape in tape deck 1.
The reset button can be used to reset the tape counter reading to
"000"
Note:
To reset the tape counter, be sure to press the reset button
completely, Otherwise, the tape counter may not operate
correctly.
Editing speed button
(EDITING SPEED)
This button is used to select the recording speed when a
tape-to-tape recording is made.
Cassette holder

recording of tape deck 1only.

After use
Be sure to reduce the volume level, and switch OFF the power from
the remote control transmitter or by the power switch of this unit. The input selection and the super bass setting will be retained (As
they were at the time when the power was switched OFF) by the
memory beck-up function. (See page 17.)

Memory Presettings
When broadcast frequencies have been preset to the memory, any methods for presetting broadcast frequencies in the memory: the
of those broadcast frequencies can thereafter be easily selected by automatic method (see below) and the manual method (refer to
simply pressing one of the preset-tuning buttons. There are two page 16); select whichever method you prefer.
Automatic memory presetting
When this method is used, the frequencies of the selected broadcast
stations are automatically preset (in sequence to higher frequencies)
into memory: "channels" 1 to 24 are available for the presetting of
FM stations, and "channels" 13 to 24 are available for AM stations.
When apresetting is made to a channel that has already been
preset, the prior presetting will be erased, so if. for example, FM
frequencies are preset to channel 1 to 24 and then AM frequencies
are preset, the first AM frequency will be preset to channel 13 (thus
erasing the FM presetting to channel 13), the second AM frequency
will be preset to 14 (erasing FM 14), and so on.

Operating Procedure" on page 13?

Note:
The changing of the disptayed frequency will be automatical-
ly stopped (by the automatic tuning function) if a broadcast
station frequency is located during the tuning process. If the
frequency at which it stops is not close to the desired
frequency, repeat step 1 above.

Notes
For automatic presetting in areas where there are fewer than 24
FM stations, the remaining channels (through channel 24) will
be left unoccupied. The unoccupied channels can be filled by
using manual memory presettings.
For AM broadcasts with extremely strong signal transmissions,
the frequency memorized may be slightly different than the
correct frequency. If this occurs, make amanual presetting.
If the interval between pressing the first button and pressing the
second button is more than about 2 seconds, the setting may
not be made correctly. If this happens, make the setting once
again. When making a memory presetting manually, once
again designate the channel to be selected after pressing the
memory button.

Manual memory presetting
A maximum of 24 broadcast stations can be Ire.sly preset to any

Repeat the above procedures to make memory
presettings, and write the presettlngs on the
station log on page 18.
Note
If a new broadcast station is preset to a channel, the broadcast
station which was previously entered to that channel will be
automatically erased.

Back-up memory
The back-up function maintains the preset rnemo_ and the
most-recent memory (see below) of the tuner seetJon when the
power isswitched OFF, in the event of a power failure, or if the power
cord is disconnected. The memory will be maintained for as long as
approximately one week.
Most-recent memory
The most-recent memory system "remembers" the broadcast

If frequency presettings are accidentally erased
1. SwitchON the power switch.
2. Make the frequencypresettingsonce again.
