MONOPOLY
Property Trading Game from Parker Brothers"
AGES 8+
2 to 8 Players
Contents:Gameboard, 3 dice, tokens, 32 houses, I2 hotels, Chance
and Community Chest cards, Title Deed cards, play money and
a Banker's tray.
Nowthere's a faster way to playMONOPOLY. Choose to playby
the classic rules for buying, rentingand selling propertiesor use the
Speed Die to get into the action faster. Ifyou've never playedthe classic
MONOPOLY game, refer to the Classic Rules beginningon the next page.
If you already know how to play andwant to use the Speed Die, just
readthe section belowfor the additional Speed Die rules.
SPEED DIE RULES
Learnins howto Playwith the S~eedDie IS as

fast as playingwith i't.
1. When starting the game, handout an extra $1,000 toeach player
(two $5005shouldwork). The game moves fast and you'll need
the extra cash to buyand build.
2. Do not use the Speed Die untilyou've landedon or passedover
GO for the first time. Onceyou collect that first $200salary, you'll
use the Speed Die for the rest of the game. This means that some
playerswill start usingthe die before others.
3. Once you start using the Speed Die, roll italong with the two
white dice on your turn. Then dothe following depending on
what you rolled.
1, 2, or 3: Add this numberto the roll of the two white
dice.You'll zoom around the board.

Bus: This letsyou "getoff the bus early." Look at the twowhite
dice.You can move the value ofone die, the other die, or the
sum of bothdice.
So ifyou rolleda 1 anda5, you can move
1 space, 5 spaces, or 6 spaces: \t'syour choice.
Mr. Monopoly:First, move the sum of the twowhite dice
and resolvethe space you landon (such as drawing acard,
buyingthe property, paying rent, etc.). Then, one of two
things will happen dependingon whetheror notthere is still
property inthe bank.
YES, there is propertyin the bank-Advance tothe NEXT
propertythat the bank still holdsand buyit ifyouwish. If you
don't want to buythis property, moveto the space anyway
and putthe propertyup for auction.
NO, there are no morepropertiesinthe bank - Advance to the
NOCT propertyonwhichyou will oweanother player money.
A few minor details:
Onlythe white dice are usedwhen determiningifyou rolleddoubles.
Do not lookat the Speed Die.
Ifyou rollathree-of-a-kind(all ofthe dice show the same number),
you can moveanywhereyou want on the board!
Ifyou get sent tojail duringyour move(either bylandingon the "Go
toJail" space or byrollingdoubles three times ina row)then your turn
is over andyou donotget touse the Speed Diefor that turn.
Use the white dice ONLY when rollingto get outofjail.

CLASSIC MONOPOW RULES
OBJECT: The object of the game IS to becomethe
wealthiest playerthrough buying, rentingand selling
property.
PREPARATION: Place the boardon atableand put
the Chance andCommunity Chest cards facedownon
their allottedspaces on the board.Each player chooses one token to
represent himtherwhile travelingaroundthe board.

Each player is given $1,500 divided as follows: P each of $500s,
$100~ and $50~; 6 $40~; 5 each of $105, $5~ and $Is.
All remainingmoneyand other equipmentgo to the Bank. Stack the ..
Bank's moneyon edge inthe compartments in the plastic Banker's tray.
BANKER. Selectas Banker a playerwho will also
make agoodAuctioneer A Banker who plays
~nthe game must keep hislher personalfunds
separate from thoseof the Bank. When morethan
f~vepersons play, the Banker may elect to act only
as Banker andAuctioneer.
THE BANK: Besides the Bank's money, the Bank
holdsthe Title Deedcards and houses and hotels priorto purchase
and use bythe players.The Bank pays salaries and bonuses. Itsells
and auctions
properties and handsout the~rproperTitle Deedcards;
it sells houses and hotels tothe players and loans moneywhen
requiredon mortgages.
The Bank collects all taxes, fines, loans and interest, andthe priceof
all propertieswhich itsells andauctions.
The Bank nwer"goes broke." Ifthe Bank runs out of money, the Banker
may issueas much more as neededbywritingon any ordinary paper.
THE PLAY: Startingwith the Banker, each player inturn throws the dice.
The playerwith the highest total starts the play: Place your
token on the corner marked "GO," throw the dice and move
your token in the directionof the arrow the numberof
spaces indicatedbythe dice.After you have completed
your play, the turn passes to the left.The tokens remain
on the spaces qccupied and proceedfrom that point on
the player's next turn. Two or moretokens may rest on the
same space at the same time.
Accordingtothe spaceyour token reaches, you may beentitledto
buy real estate or other properties - or obligedto payrent, paytaxes,
draw
a Chance or CommunityChest card, "Go toJail," etc.
Ifyou throw doubles, you moveyour token as usual, the sum of the
two dice, and are subjectto any privilegesor penalties pertainingto
the spaceonwhich you land. Retainingthe dice, throwagain and move
your token as before. Ifyou throw doubles three times in succession,
moveyour token immediatelytothe space marked"In Jail" (see JAIL).

"GO": Each time a player'stoken lands on or passes over
GO, whether bythrowing the dice or drawing acard,
the Banker pays himther a $200sala,ry.
The $200is paidonlyonce each time kound
the board. However, ifa player passingGO on
the throw of the dice lands 2 spaces beyondit
on CommunityChest, or
7 spaces beyond
iton Chance, and draws the "Advanceto GO" card, helshe collects
$200for passingGO the first timeandanother $200for reaching itthe
secondtime byinstructionson the card.
BUYING PROPERTY: Whenever you landon an unownedpropertyyou
may buythat propertyfrom the Bank at its printedprice.You receivethe
Title Deedcard showing ownership; place it faceup infront of you.
Ifyou donotwish to buythe property, the Banker sells itat auction
to the highest bidder. The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid
in cash and receives the Title Deedcard for that property.Any player,
includingthe one who declined the option to buy itat the printed
price, may
bid. Biddingmay start at any price.
PAMNG When you landon propertyowned byanother player,
the owner collects rent from you inaccordancewith the list printedon
its Title Deedcard.
If the propertyis mortgaged, no rent can becollected.When a
propertyis mortgaged, its Title Deedcard is placedfacedown in front
of the owner.

It is an advantage to holdall the Title Deed cards inacolor-
group (e.g., Boardwalkand Park Place; or Connecticut,Vermont and
OrientalAvenues) becausethe owner may then charge double rent
for unimprovedproperties inthat color-group.This ruleapplies to
unmortgaged propertieseven ifanother property in that color-groupis
mortgaged.
It is even moreadvantageousto have houses or hotelson properties
becauserents are much higher than for unimproved properties.
The owner may not collectthe rent if he/shefails to ask for itbefore
the secondplayer followingthrows the dice.
"CHANCE" AND "COMMUNITY CHEST": When you landon either of
these spaces, take the top card from the deck indicated, follow the

instructionsand return the card facedownto the bottomof the deck.
The "Get Out of Jail Free" card is helduntil usedand then returnedto
the bottomof the deck. Ifthe player
who draws itdoes notwish to use
it, helshe may sell it, at any time, toanother playerat
a priceagreeable
to both.
"INCOME TAX": Ifyou landhereyou have two options:You may
estimateyour
tax at $900 and paythe Bank, or you may pay 10% of
your total worth to the Bank. Your total worth is all your cash on hand,
printedpricesof mortgagedand unmortgagedproperties and cost
priceof
all buildingsyouown.
You must decidewhich optionyou will take beforeyou addup
your totalworth.
"JAIL": You land inJail when. ..(I) your token lands on the space
marked
"Go to Jail"; (2) you draw acard marked"Go to JailN;or
(3) you throw doublesthree times in succession.
When you are sent toJail you cannot
collect your $200 salary in that move
since, regardlessofwhere your token
is
on the board, you must move it
directly intoJail. Your
turn ends when
youare sent to Jail.
Ifyou are not"sent" to Jail but in the ordinarycourse of play landon
that space, you are "Just Visiting," you incur no penalty, andyou move
ahead inthe usual manner on your next turn.
You get out of Jail by.. .(I) throwing doubleson any ofyour next
three turns; ifyou succeed in doingthis you immediatelymove forward
the numberof spaces shown byyour doubles throw; even thoughyou
hadthrown doubles, youdonot take another turn;
(2) usingthe "Get
Outof Jail Free" card ifyou have it; (3) purchasingthe "Get Out of Jail
Free" card from another player and playing it; (4) payinga fine of $50
beforeyou roll the diceon either of your next two turns.
Ifyou do not throw doubles byyour third turn, you must pay the $50
fine.You then get out of Jail and immediatelymove forward the number
of
spaces shown byyour throw.
Even though you are inJail, you may buy and sell property, buy and
sell houses and hotelsand collect rents.

"FREE PARKING": A player landingon this place does not
receiveany money, propertyor rewardof any kind. This is just a"free"
restingplace.
HOUSES: When you ownall the propert~esin a color-group
you may buyhouses from the Bank and erect them on those properties.
Ifyou buyone house, you may put iton any
one of those properties.The next houseyou
buy must
be erectedon one of the unimproved
propertiesof this or any other completecolor-
groupyou may own.
The priceyou must pay the Bank for each
house is shown on your ltleDeed card for the
propertyonwhich you erectthe house.
The owner still collects double rent from an opponent who lands on
the unimprovedpropertiesof hishercompletecolor-group.
Followingthe above rules, you may buyand erect at any time as
many houses as your judgement and financial standingwill allow. But
you must buildevenly, i.e., you cannot erect more than one house on
any one propertyof any color-group untilyou have builtone house on
wery propertyof that group. You may then begin on the second row
of houses, and so on, upto a limitof four houses to
a property. For
example, you cannot buildthree houses on one property ifyou have
only one house on another propertyof that group.
As you buildevenly, you must also break down evenly ifyousell
houses back to the Bank (see SELLING PROPERTY).
HOTELS: When aplayer has four houses on each propertyof a
completecolor-group, hdshe may buyahotel from the Bank and erect
iton any propertyof the color-group. Hdshereturns the four houses
from that propertyto the Bank and paysthe pricefor the hotelas shown
on the Ttle Deedcard. Onlyone hotel may
be erected on any one
property.
BUILDING SHORTAGES: When the Bank has no houses to sell, players
wishing to buildmust wait for some player to returnor sell histher
houses to the Bank beforebuilding.If there are alimitednumber of
houses and hotels available and two or more playerswish to buy more
than the Bank has, the houses or hotels must
be soldat auctionto the
highest bidder.

SELLING PROPERN: Unimprovedproperties, railroadsand util~ties
(but not buildings)may be soldto any player as a private transaction
for any amount the owner can get; however, no propertycan besoldto
-
another player if buildingsare standingonany propertiesof that color-
group.Any buildings so locatedmust besold back to the Bank before
the ownercan sell any propertyof that color-group.
Houses and hotels may besold back to the Bank at any time for one-
half the price paidfor them.
All houseson one color-groupmust be soldone byone, evenly, in
reverseof the manner inwhich they were erected.
All hotels onone color-group may besoldat once, or they may be
sold one house at atime (one hotelequals five houses), evenly, in
reverseof the manner inwhich they were erected.
MORTGAGES: Unimprovedproperties can bemortgagedthrough the
Bank at any time. Beforean improvedpropertycan
be mortgaged, all
the buildingson all the propertiesof its color-groupmust
be sold back
to the Bank at half price.The mortgagevalue is printedon each Title
Deedcard.
Norentcan becollected on mortgagedproperties or utilities,
butrentcan
be collectedon unmortgagedproperties inthe
same group.
In order to liftthe mortgage, the owner must paythe Bank the
amount of the mortgage plus 10% interest. When all the propert~esof
acolor-groupare no longer mortgaged, the owner may begin to
buy
back housesat full price.
The playerwho mortgagespropertyretains possessionof itand
noother player may secure itbyliftingthe mortgagefrom the Bank.
However, the owner may sell this mortgagedpropertytoanother player
at any agreed price. Ifyou are the newowner, you may liftthe mortgage
at once ifyouwish bypayingoff the mortgage plus
10% interestto the Bank. Ifthe mortgage is not lifted
at once, you must paythe Bank
10% interestwhen
you buythe propertyand ifyou liftthe
mortgage lateryou must paythe Bank
an
additional 10% interestas well
as the amount of the mortgage.

BANKRUPTCY.. You are declaredbankruptifyou owe morethan you
can payeither to another playeror to the Bank. Ifyour
,
debt is to another player, you must tum over to that
player all that you have of value and retire from the
game. In making this settlement, ifyou ownhouses or
hotels, you must retumthese to the Bank inexchange
for moneyto the extent of one-half the amount paid
for them; this cash is giventothe creditor. If you have
mortgagedpropertyyou also turn this propertyover
toyour creditorbutthe newowner mustat once pay .
the Bank the amount of intereston the loan, which is 10% of the value of
the property.The new ownerwho does this may then, at hislheroption,
paythe principalor holdthe propertyuntilsome laterturn, then lift the
mortgage. If helshe holds property inthis way untila later turn, helshe
must paythe interestagain upon liftingthe mortgage.
Shouldyou owethe Bank, insteadof another player, morethan you
can pay(because of taxes or penalties) even bysellingoff buildings
and mortgagingproperty,you must turn over all assets to the Bank. In
this case, the Bank immediatelysells byauctionall propertyso taken,
exceptbuildings.
A bankruptplayer must immediatelyretire from the
game. The last player left inthe gamewins.
MISCEUANEOUS: Moneycan beloanedto a player only bythe Bank
andthen only bymortgagingproperty.No player may borrow from or
lendmoneyto another player.
