This MagicStream™ Laminar must be installed by a licensed or certified electrician or a
qualifiedpoolservicemaninaccordancewiththeNationalElectricalCodeandallapplicable
local codes and ordinances. Improper installation will create an electrical hazard which

shock, and may also cause damage to property.
Always disconnect power to the MagicStream Laminar at the circuit breaker
before servicing the unit. Failure to do so could result in death or serious injury to

General Installation Information
•All electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician, and must conform to all
national, state, and local codes.
• Install to provide drainage of compartment for electrical components.
• Code requirements for the electrical connection differ from state to state. Install equipment in
accordance with the National Electrical Code and all applicable local codes and ordinances.

Overview
MagicStream™Laminar
TheMagicStreamLaminarisdesignedtoprovidea clear,turbulence-free stream ofwaterthatcanbe lit
withafiberopticcable,oranLED light engine foradazzlingnighttimeeffect.The12VACpoweredLED
lightengineiscapableofgenerating a series ofmulti-coloredlightshows,orcanbeset to display a
continuous,singlecolor.
If desired,thebuilt-insolenoid“thumper”cancreatearandom“wrinkle,”intheLaminar’sstream,causing
ittodisplayabrilliant spot oflightthatmovesalongthe stream’sarc. Thepatentedlightenhancer can be
adjustedtomaximizethelightinthearc.
TheMagicStreamLaminarcomesequippedwithanABSdeckhousingforeasyinstallationinadeck
surface,orinthelandscapingsurroundingthepool,fountain,orspa.

Design Points
• TheLaminararccanreachamaximum height of seven feetandadistanceofeightfeet.
• Toachievethemaximum Laminar archeight, awatersupplyof10gpmwith 16 ftofhead(measuredat
theLaminar)isrequired.
• InstalltheLaminarclosetotheedgeofthe pool to minimize waterfromsplashingonthedeckonwindy
days.
• Usea 20 microncartridge filter tosupplyclean, filtered waterto the Laminar. Do not useaDE or Sand
filter.
• Use1" Sch40PVCpipe tosupplythe Laminar. On long piperuns, calculate thepressure drop and
compensatebyincreasingthesupplypressure.
• Installa1"ballorglobethrottlingvalveonthewatersupplytoEACHLaminar. When installing more
thanoneLaminar,Pentairrecommendsinstallingathrottlingvalveonthemainsupplymanifold.
• Installa1-1/2" drain linetothebottom of theLaminardeckhousing and createadrainsystem to
preventstandingwater.
NOTE: Proper drainage from the deck housing is critical to avoid damage to the Laminar Jet
assembly. Do not install the Laminar Jet deck housing in an area prone to run-off or flooding.
• Thedeckhousingelectricalconnection(marked"Electrical"onthehousing)isdesignedfor1"PVC
conduit. Createnomorethan 270º of turnsintheconduitwithoutan intermediate pullbox.
• Ifyou opt fora fiber opticlightsource, choose onewith 150-170 strands. TheLaminarwill accept a
bundleofstrands1/2”indiameter.
• TheLED light enginecomeswitha100' long 3-wirecable. Usea120/12VAC-100wattpool lighting
transformer(purchased separately) poweredwith a GFCIbreaker. Six Laminarscan be powered
withonetransformer. Follow theNationalElectricCode and localcodestodeterminethe placement of
thetransformer.
• Mountthedeck housing sothatthewater supply andelectricalconnectionsare located oppositethe
intendeddirectionofthe Laminar stream. TheLaminar’sorificecanrotateonly 30 degreestoleftor
right,sodeterminetheintendeddirectionoftheLaminarstreamandpositionthedeckhousing
accordingly.

Installation
ThissectiondescribeshowtoinstalltheMagicStreamLaminar.
Mechanical Installation
1. Digaholemeasuring24"deep and 24" squareandplacethedeckhousinginit. Thiswill allow enough
roomtoconnectthesupplypipingandelectricalconduit.
2. Solvent weldtheconduitandthedrainandsupplypiping to thedeckhousing.
3. Anchor the deckhousingsothat the topofthehousingcover collar isatthelevelof the finisheddeck
(Figure1). Theadjustablecollarshouldbeangledsothatitwillalignflushwiththefinisheddeck
surface. Onceyouhave made thefinaladjustmentsto the collar’sangle,gluethe collar tothedeck
housing.
4. Backfillaroundthedeckhousingwithgraveltofurtherstabilizethe housingduringdeck
placement. Leavecoverinplaceduringdeckinstallation.
The deck housing is made of ABS. Use Weld-On 793 or 794 ABS-PVC cement to glue Sch40 PVC.

Pentair recommends that the system pressure test be performed after the deck housing is mounted to the
supply piping.
5. Plugtheflexlineinthehousingbydisconnectingtheunionbetweenthedeck housingandtheLaminar.
UsingoneoftheLaminaradjustmentnuts,securethewinterizationcaptothesupplysideof the union.
The pressure on the piping/plumbing supplying the Laminar should not exceed 50 PSI.
6. Once the deckisfinished,flushanydebrisfromthesupplypipeusingthepumpandfiltersystemthat
suppliestheLaminar.
Any debris in the Laminar unit will hinder its ability to produce a turbulence-free stream.
Electrical Installation
1. Pullthe16gauge,3-conductor cable through theopeningmarked“electrical”inthedeckhousing and
feeditvia electricalconduittothe transformer’slocation(Figure 2). Leave 3feetof slack atthedeck
housingendtoalloweasyservicing.
2. Connect the LEDwiringtothe 12vac tapsofthetransformer.
3. Connect the120vacside ofthetransformer toa120vac GFCIpowerfeed thatiscontrolled byasingle
switch. Wheninstallingmultiplelaminars,makesureallthelaminars areconnectedtoasingleswitch. You
willusethisswitchingcapabilitytoprogramtheLEDlightengine(Seepages10-11).
WARNING — To avoid dangerous or fatal electrical shock hazard, all metal items within five (5) feet of the pool or
spamust be properlyelectrically bonded toareliable grounding point.The Laminar canistermust be properly electrically
bondedand grounded via theNO. 8AWG groundconnectorlocated on the sideofthe canister.

Fiber Optic Cable Installation
Use150-170strand fiber opticcableor a fiberbundle1/2” maxium diameter.
1. Remove six inches(6")ofthecable jacket.
2. Wrapblackelectricaltapetightlyaroundtheexposedfibers, leaving approximately ½" of exposedfiber
attheendofthe cable. The tapepreventstheindividualfibersfromseparating.
3. Cut the fiberoptic cable withaheat knifesothat the cableendsform aflatsurface. For bestresults,
heattheknifeuntilitis“cherry”red.
NOTE: Do not cut the fiber ends too close to the tape. Leave a ¼" distance between the end of the cable
and the tape. This will prevent the adhesive on the tape from melting and adhering to the ends of the fiber
opticstrands.
4. Slide the completedfiberopticcablethrough the Heycowaterprooffittingandup the tube(locatedat
thebottomofthelaminar)untilthecableencountersthelensinsidetheunit.Securethefiberbytighteningthe
waterprooffitting.
NOTE: Provide at least two extra feet (2') of fiber optic cable in the deck housing to allow for easy
removal of the Laminar.
5. Installtheilluminatorandattachthefiberopticcabletoitaccordingtotheinstructionssuppliedwiththe
illuminator.

Setup and Operation
Thissectiondescribes how tosetup and operatetheMagicStreamLaminar.
Oncethedeckisfinished,flushanydebrisfromthesupplypipeusingthepumpandfiltersystemthat
suppliestheLaminar.
NOTE: Any debris in the laminar will hinder its ability to produce a turbulence-free stream.
Laminar Setup
Makesurethe supply pipinghasbeen flushed clearasdirected above.
1. Carefully spreadthebracketsandslidetheLaminarunitinto the holes inthebrackets(Figure3),making
suretheLaminarorificeis pointed out thetopslotinthedeckhousinglid (Figure 4).

2. Makesurethespareo-ringsareinplace. Place the union winterizationplugsintheLaminaradjustment
nutsandscrew them inplaceontheLaminar body (Figure5).
3. ConnecttheLaminartothe supply pipewiththeunionconnection (Figure 5). Makesuretheo-ring
staysinitsgroove).
4. Adjustthelaminarsothatthelaminarorificeisvisiblethroughthe slot inthedeckhousingLid.
5. Placethedeckhousinglid/Laminarunitinthe deck housing (Figure 5). Ifthehosesinthedeckhousing
preventtheproperseatingofthedeck housing lid, you mayhavetoloosentheunionnutbrieflyandallow
thehosesto twist,sothat they spiraloutof the way,intothe deck housing.
6. AdjusttheLaminarthrottlingvalveto¼open. TurnonthesupplypumpandlettheLaminarfillwith
water.
7. When a streamofwaterbeginstoflowfromthelaminarorifice,adjusttheflow,elevationanddirection
asdesired.

Light Enhancer Setup (darkness required)
You may electtovarytheintensityofthelightwhenusingtheLED orfiberopticlightsourcetolightthe
laminarstream. Youcanadjustthelightintensitybymeansofthelightenhancer. Thelightenhancerusesa
verysmallstream of watertoaddvery smallbubblestothe stream. The screwthatcontrolsthe light
enhancerislocatedontheLaminarorificeplate (Figure 6).
Thereisnooptimalsettingforthelightenhancer,andtheintensityofthelightemittingfromthelaminar
streamispurelya matter oftaste. We encourageyoutoexperimentwith the lightenhancertoachievethe
effectyoudesire.
NOTE: Laminars are sensitive to wind, earth movement and equipment vibration. Secure the Laminar
and Deck Housing to minimize vibration. Periodic stream distortion, caused by pump vibrations and motor
electrical fluctuations, is normal and not indicative of a nozzle defect.
NOTE: A Laminar may occasionally "burp" as a result of trapped air accumulating in the nozzle body.
This phenomenon is normal and will occur until all air is purged from the piping system. Trapped air can also
cause slight distortion in water action. It is imperative that all air is removed to ensure proper water feature
operation.

LED Light Engine Features
TheLEDLightEnginecontrols theoperationofthefollowingfeatures,anditsbuilt-inmemorycapability
ensuresthateachtimeyouturnthelightengineon, it resumes operation with thesamefeaturesinoperation
aswhenyoulastturneditoff:
Lighting
Color freeze mode-You choose one color of light. The color does not change.
Colorchangingmode-the colorofthelightchangesautomatically,accordingto one the following
threeprograms:
Sync-Colorswillchangeat 10 secintervals. Inthismode,multiple
Laminarswillchangecolorstogether.
Random -Colorswill changeatabout 10 secintervalsbut in acompletelyrandom sequence.
Inthismode,multipleLaminarswillNOTchangecolorstogether.
Party-Colorswillchangerandomly and slowlyatfirst,thenspeed up, untilthesequenceends
withquickflashesandstrobes. The sequence thenrepeats,beginning withtheslowchanges.
Inthismode,multipleLaminarswillNOTchange colorstogether
Solenoid Thumper
Thesolenoidthumperfeaturecreatesa"wrinkle"inthelaminarstream,thuscreatinga brilliant spot of
lightinthelaminararc.
Reset
Whenyouselecttheresetfeature,the LED light engine revertstotheRandomcolorchangingmode
withthesolenoidthumperON.
Operating the LED Light Engine Features
Youcontroltheoperationof the LEDlightenginefeaturesbycycling the powerOFFandONrapidly
(1SEC)inthecombinationsdescribedbelow:
IMPORTANT: Start from the ON position.
Lighting -cycle thepowerOFF/ON 2times. Eachsuccessive OFF/ON combinationwill cycle
through Sync, Random and Party.
Solenoid Thumper - cycle the power OFF/ON 3times to turn the solenoid thumper ON and OFF.
Reset -cycle thepowerOFF/ON 4timestoreset theLED light engine.

Sync Mode - Colors will change at about 10sec intervals. In this mode, multiple Laminars will change colors together. If the
solenoid thumper mode is turned on, the thumpers on multiple Laminars will thump together.
Random Mode - Colors will change at about 10sec intervals but in a completely random sequence. In this mode, multiple Laminars
will NOT change colors together. If the solenoid thumper mode is turned on, the thumpers will thump at random intervals and
multiple Laminars will NOT thump together.
Party Mode - Colors will change randomly and slowly at first, then speed up, until the sequence ends with quick flashes and strobes.
Then the sequence starts again with slow changes. In this mode, multiple Laminars will NOT change colors together. If the solenoid
thumper mode is turned on, the thumpers will thump at random intervals and multiple laminars will NOT thump together.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting
ThefollowinginformationdescribeshowtoserviceandmaintaintheMagicStreamLaminar.
Filter Cleaning
Performroutinemaintenanceonthefilterto ensure trouble-free Laminaroperation.Becarefultokeepdebris
outof thedischargeplumbingwhencleaningthefilter. IfdebrisgetsintothefilterdischargelinetotheLaminar,
followthisprocedure:
1. RemovetheLaminarbyunscrewingthetwodeckhousinglidretainingscrews.
2. Remove the deckhousinglidandLaminar unit and placeonthedeck.
3. DisconnectthesupplyunionandturnontheLaminarsupplypumpuntilthewaterrunsclear.
4. Reattach the union,placetheLaminarbackinthe deck housing andcheckthealignmentofthestream.
5. Replacethedeckhousinglidretainingscrews.
Clogged Laminar (Poor Stream Quality)
Ifthelaminarorificebecomescloggedwithdebris,followthisprocedure:
1. RemovetheLaminarbyunscrewingthetwodeckhousinglidretainingscrews.
2. Removethedeckhousinglid and Laminar unitandplaceonthedeck. Disconnectthesupply union.
3. Using agardenhose, place thehoseover the jetnozzleand force waterbackward through theunitand out
the3/4"openunion. Thiswill clear most ofthedebris.
NOTE: Do not insert anything into the laminar orifice! This may permanently damage the laminar stream.

Winterization
Do not let the laminar freeze. This will void the warranty.
TakethefollowingstepstowinterizetheLaminar:
1. RemovetheLaminarbyunscrewingthetwodeckhousinglidretainingscrews.
2. Removethedeckhousinglid and Laminar unitandplaceonthedeck. Disconnectthesupply union.
3. Remove both unionnutsfromtheLaminarbracketsand take off theunionplugs(don'tlosetheO-rings).
4. Spread thebracketscarefullyandseparate the Laminarunitfromthe brackets.
5. DraintheLaminarbyrotatingtheentireunituntilmostofthewaterrunsout.
6. Drainthefilterandblowoutthesupplyline.
7. Use the unionnutandplugtocapoffthesupplylinefromthefilter(Figure6).
8. Coil the deckhousingsupplyhoseand push ittothebottomof the housing.
9. TurntheLaminarunitsothe orifice faces downtowardthebottom of thedeckhousing(becareful not to
damagethelightenhancerneedle). Orientingtheunitface down assures that water intheLEDlightenginedoes
notfreeze.
10. Replace the deckhousinglid.
11. WaitforSpring.
Spare O-rings
We includedtwospareO-rings with theMagicStreamLaminar. Theyare intended asreplacementsfor the
watersupplyunionO-ringwhenit is damaged orlost.
