penveu® is an affordable handheld device that makes projectors and large screen displays interactive.
Any flat surface from pull down screens to flat panel displays becomes an interactive whiteboard. The
penveu system is both a digital pen and a mouse. Use penveu directly on the display and up to 40 feet
away. Portable and flexible. No software or licensing required. Installation is as easy as 1-2-3.
The penveu interactive display system helps teachers and presenters create a dynamic learning
environment. This wireless presentation tool delivers interactivity from the front row all the way to the
back of the room. The penveu system redefines interactivity by placing the power of engagement in
the palm of your hand. penveu is a portable device that works with any display. Effectively engage your
audience!

1.1 penveu Overview
The penveu system interacts with the display in either pen mode or mouse mode.
In pen mode, the user can write, draw, highlight, or erase on the display.
In mouse mode, the user can control the display, select items, and open applications.
The intuitive menu User Interface is accessed with one-click of the menu Button on the pen and
provides a simple on-screen menu system.
The user controls the type of drawing tool, color and thickness, as well as the background.
The built-in camera and high-tech design provide great accuracy. The penveu system features auto-
calibration which requires no additional action by the user.
Screen captures are enabled with the touch of a button, with or without added notation, which makes it
easy to save and then resume a lesson or presentation where you left it.
Each system includes the following components:

1.2 penveu System Components
The penveu system components include the pen and the veu.
1.2.1 The pen
The pen operates as
a drawing tool (pen, highlighter and eraser),
a computer mouse,
includes a simple menu User Interface to select and configure pen and mouse options, and
uses a factory installed rechargeable battery for power.
The pen may be used both directly on the display and up to 40 feet away from the veu. The pen may
be used at virtually any distance from the display, as long as it remains within 40 feet of the veu.
For details on the operation and function, refer to Section 3 Functions, Indicators and Controls.

1.2.2 The veu
The veu functions as
a link between the display and computer source (computer source is optional),
a communication device to the pen;the veu must remain within 40 feet of the pen,
a charging station and carrying case for the pen,
a system update device when new versions are available, and
storage for files, images, presentations or other documents.
For details on the operation and function, refer to Section 3 Functions, Indicators and Controls.

1.2.3 penveu System Accessories
The penveu interactive display system includes the following accessories:
one (1) dock station to offer an additional charging location and stand for the pen.
two (2) identical power adapters; used to power the dock and the veu.The veu must
be connected to a power outlet with one of the provided power adapters when using
the system. See Section 2.3 SET UP the penveu system for detailed instructions.
one (1) USB cable; used to connect the veu to the computer source(e.g. PC, Mac,
laptop, tablet, or other mobile device).
Not all mobile devices with USB ports will support mouse mode. The penveu system
will operate with USB mouse connections that support “absolute mouse positioning”
(the exact pixel location is used). “Relative mouse” positioning is not supported at this
time as the mouse position is not exact in this mode and relies only on the amount of
movement from the last relative location. A computer with a USB connection is
required to perform system updates and access saved files from the storage on the veu.
one (1) VGA cable; used to connect the veu to the computer source (e.g. PC, Mac,
laptop, tablet or other mobile device).
Attach an applicable converter to this cable if the interface on the computer source is
not VGA (i.e. HDMI). Converters are not included.

1.2.4 penveu System Usage and Storage
The penveu system is very flexible. Use the penveu system with different devices and across
different classrooms, conference rooms, or auditoriums. The penveu system is also portable
and lightweight; take penveu with you on-the-go.
When the penveu system is in standby mode (e.g. connected in a classroom, or on your
desk), it is best to put the pen in the charging dock. The dock acts a convenient stand and
charging station for the pen.

and close the veu lid. The veu acts a convenient carrying case for the pen.

1.3 Operating Modes
penveu is both a digital pen and a mouse. The pen may be used BOTH directly on the display in
Touch Mode and away from the display (Remote Mode); the pen must remain within 40 feet of
the veu. Additionally, penveu can also be used to hover over the display and as an air mouse.

1.3.1 Touch Mode: Use penveu Directly on the Display
When using penveu in Touch Mode, or directly on the display, the penveu system will work
with display sizes ranging from 20 to 100 inches (measured diagonally).
Tips for best performance:
Hold the pen perpendicular to the display with
the camera at the top of the pen.
Avoid blocking the camera with your finger.
Hold the pen (as shown) in such a way as to
avoid casting a shadow in front of the pen
camera. (If you can’t see what you’re writing,
neither can the pen).
1.3.2 Remote Mode: Use penveu Away from the Display
The pen may also be used in Remote Mode, or away from the display. Larger display sizes may
be used when writing from a distance, however, the pen must remain within 40 feet of the veu
to optimize the wireless communication .
The penveu system uses motion-sensing technology to enable precise control of your
presentation.
The pen may be held in one of two ways, illustrated in the diagrams below:
If at any time you wish to center the cursor on the display either:
flick the pen side-to-side, or
move the cursor to the far sides or corner of the display and aim the pen tip to that side or
corner. As you return the cursor from the far sides or corner, the cursor will align with the
direction the pen is pointed.
Once the cursor has re-centered, point the Pen Tip toward the center of the screen to re-align
the pen with the cursor.

Tip for best performance:
As you move farther away from the display, make smaller hand movements, whether
writing in pen mode or moving the cursor in mouse mode.
1.3.3 penveu® Pad Mode: Use penveu Away from the Display
The penveu system may also be used away from the display in the penveu® Pad Mode.
It offers an alternative way to use the pen for writing “digital ink” on the displayed image or as a
mouse.
This mode is automatically enabled when the pen is pointed at a sheet of penveu® Pad paper
as long as the paper is held at a relatively horizontal angle (45 degrees or less) such as on table
or a podium/lectern.
The penveu® Pad Mode allows pen and/or mouse operation to be more accurate. This may be
helpful for users who present from any flat surface (desk or podium) in the classroom or a
conference room.
The penveu® Pad paper graphic can be found as a PDF file at www.penveu.com/resources.
This file can be copied onto your computer and then printed at no additional cost.

Print the penveu® Pad paper in its “Actual Size” with no scaling or resizing. Once
printed, measure with a ruler the two “7.25 inches” and “6.5 inches” lines on the Pad
paper: one is on the bottom of the target field and the other on the right side of the
target field. If the paper has been printed at 100% of the original size, the bottom line
should measure 7.25 inches and the right line should measure 6.5 inches.
Avoid blocking the pen camera with your finger.
Avoid writing in the gray areas of the penveu® Pad paper.
Avoid sharply tilting the pen to the side relative to the penveu® Pad paper.

Keep the vertical lines on the penveu® Pad paper somewhat aligned with the pen for
the most accurate writing.
The “TOP” arrows at the penveu® Pad paper should be at the top of the paper.
Do not tilt the penveu® Pad paper more than 45 degrees from the horizontal level
(parallel to the ground). If this occurs, Pad Mode will be automatically disabled to allow
for writing directly on the display.

Installation is as easy as one, two, three. No software or calibration is required. Use the penveu
interactive display system with the equipment you already own and use.
2.1 Flexibility
Use the penveu system with your computer, projection device and display. The penveu system
will work with your content, favorite applications, or even without a computer.
Follow these steps to install the penveu system.

2.2 CHARGE the pen Battery
It is recommended that you charge the pen battery for at least three (3) hours before first using
the penveu system. If the pen battery is fully drained, a full charge will take approximately six
(6) hours. Use either the veu or the dock to charge the pen.
Simply plug in one of the included power adapters to the veu or the dock and place the pen in
as shown in the diagrams below. Only use the veu or dock with the supplied power adapters to
charge the pen. Do not attempt to charge the pen with any other device or power adapter.
Both the pen and the veu have battery indicators () to specify the remaining battery
charge on the pen.If the battery charge reaches the critical stage (red ), only a few
minutes of pen use remain. The lights on the veu also indicate the remaining charge on the
pen.

2.2.1 Replacing the Battery
Do not attempt to replace the internal rechargeable battery in the penveu system. Battery
replacements must be performed by the manufacturer. For information about battery
replacement services go to support.penveu.com.
2.3 SET UP the penveu system
The penveu system can work with both Windows and Macintosh computers. Follow the steps
outlined in this section to install the penveu system to work with your computer and display.
2.3.1 SET UP the veu on a PC
Use the diagram below as a quick reference guide to set up the veu with the computer source
and display. The blue lines illustrate where to connect the VGA cables. The green line illustrates
the USB cable connection.
Two VGA cables are required to set up the penveu system as shown below. One VGA cable is
included with your penveu system; the other VGA cable was provided with your projector or
display.
❶ FIRST, plug in the power adapter to the back of the veu and an electrical outlet. The
veu must be plugged into a power supply when in use.
❷Attach the VGA cable connected to your projector or display to the port on the back
of the veu labeled DISPLAY.
❸Attach the VGA cable provided with the penveu system to the port on the back of
the veu labeled PC and the other end to the VGA port on the computer.
Insert the USB cable provided with the penveu system to the USB port on the back of
the veu and the other end to a USB port on the computer.

Notes:
Converters may be used if the connector type is something other than VGA (i.e. HDMI).
Converters are not included.
A USB connection is required to use the pen as a computer mouse and to transfer files, such as
presentations (see Section 3.8.6 Saving Other Files to the veu)between the veu and the
computer, as well as to perform system updates (see Section 2.9 penveu System Updates)
The penveu system can be used without a computer source in pen mode ONLY. See Section
4.4 Use penveu without a Computer Source for more details.
Only ONE (1) veu may be connected to your computer source at a time.
2.3.2 SET UP the veu on a MACINTOSH
To set up penveu on a Macintosh computer, a “Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter” may be
required to connect the VGA cable provided with the penveu system to the Mini DisplayPort
on the Macintosh computer.
NOTE: Make sure to use the adapter manufactured by Apple (Model number MB572Z/B).
Adapters from other manufacturers may not work properly.
