Capacitor-Free Signal Path
Theinputsoftheéloquence250iareDCcoupledandthereisnota
single capacitor in the signal path that the audio signal passes through,
improvinglow-frequencyresponseandlinearity.Therearenocapacitors
todegradeovertimeandhinderperformance,sotheamplierwillessen-
tiallysoundthesameyearsafteritsinitialpurchase.
Precision Volume Control
Theéloquence250iusesasolid-statesteppedattenuatorofferingprecise
resolutionwithexceptionalchannelmatching.Thesealedpackageand
lackofmechanicalcontacts,resultsinanagelessvolumecontrol–wiper
noiseandcomponentdriftisathingofthepast.
Non-Invasive Balance Control
Balancecontrolintheéloquence250iisaccomplishedwithouttheaddi-
tion of any further circuitry, thereby removing its potential effects on the
audiosignal.Thebalancecontrolbenetsfromthesamepreciseresolu-
tionofferedbythevolumecontrol.
MOSFET Technology

Manysettingsoftheéloquence250iareusercustomisable–inputsmay
be named appropriately, select only inputs that are used, precisely match
volume levels between inputs, set inputs to bypass the volume control,
setinitialandmaximumvolumes.Essentially,theampliercanoperate
asifitwerecustomdesignedforyoursystem.Theseareonlyaselection
oftheavailablesettingsyoucancustomise;continuereadingfordiscus-
siononothercustomisablesettings.
Infrared Remote Control
Thesuppliedinfrared(IR)remotecontrolofferscompletecontroloverthe
éloquence250iinasmallandfunctionalpackage.ExternalcontrolbyIR
isalsoofferedviatheIRinputontherearpanel,shouldtheamplierbe
insideacabinetoroutsideline-of-sightoftheremotecontrol.
Smart Home Integration
Theéloquence250icaneasilybeintegratedintoanysmarthome,using
theRS-232portattherearoftheamplierandinterfacingtodevicesfrom
thelikesofControl4™,AMX™andCrestron™.CoupledwiththeIRinput
andTriggerinput,smarthomeintegrationhasneverbeeneasier.

Protection
Theéloquence250iemploysseveralformsofprotection,bothforits
ownself-preservationaswellastheprotectionofloudspeakersand
othercomponentstowhichitisconnected.Theprotectionmechanisms
includeDCoffset,over-current,ACpower,internalDCfuseandthermal
protection.
Construction
Regardlessofthetechnologyused,numerousdetailsmustbeexecuted
tofullyrealisethepotentialofaPerreauxdesign.Thequalityofindividual
components, the care and craftsmanship with which they are assembled
and the exhaustive inspection and testing we employ help raise the
valueofPerreauxproducts.Inadditiontoyieldingthebestperformance,
careful attention to details is the secret to achieving both reliability and
longevity.
Optional Modules
Theéloquencerangeoffersoptionalphonoanddigital-to-analogue
converter(DAC)modules.Thephonomodulehasselectablegainandis
suitableforbothmovingmagnet(MM)andmovingcoil(MC)cartridges.
TheDACmoduleprovidesup-samplingto24-bit/192kHzandoffers
connectivityviacoaxial(BNC),optical(Toslink)andUSB.Additionof
these modules will ensure seamless integration into any current or future
system.

Installation
Unpacking
Theéloquence250iissuppliedwiththefollowingaccessories:

Werecommendyouretainthepackagingforreuseincaseyouneedto
transporttheunitatalaterdate.
Placement
Youréloquence250iintegratedampliershouldgenerallybeplacedclose
toyourprimarysourcecomponent,keepinginterconnectcablingshort.
Positionallothercomponentsofyoursystemcloseenoughtoyour250ito
avoidhavingtostretchorextendanyoftheinterconnectcables.
Ventilation Requirements
Youréloquence250irequiresdissipatingconsiderablepowerintheform
ofheat.Itshouldbeplacedinapositionthatdoesnotrestricttheairow
aroundit.
Asa“ruleofthumb”,allowatleast80mm(3inches)aboveandtoeachside
oftheunitandmounttheéloquence250ionaatsurfaceforaircirculation
toallowthisheattodissipate.Donotsitdirectlyontoacarpetedsurfaceas
itwillpreventtheheatsinksfromoperatingasdesigned
Itthedeviceisusedinacabinet,airmustbeabletoowthrough.An
enclosedcabinetwillseverelyrestrictheatdissipation.
Ensurethatnothingisplacedaboveorbelowtheamplierthatmightblock
orrestrictthevents.
Iftheéloquence250ihasinadequateventilationand/orisplayedvery
enthusiastically for a period of time, its temperature may rise above the
designatedoperatinglevelandtheover-temperatureprotectionwilltrip–
disconnectingtheoutputuntilithascooledsufciently.
Other Devices
Ideally,youréloquence250iintegratedampliershouldnotbelocated
directlyaboveoradjacenttootherheat-producingproductssuchasradia-
tors,otherpowerampliers,etc.Ifmultipleampliersarebeingusedand
spaceisrestricted,placingthemsidebysideispreferabletostacking.
Itisadvisabletopositionyouréloquence250iawayfrom(andifpossible,
connectedtoapowersocketonadifferentcircuitfrom)powerfulelectrical
orelectronicproductssuchasTVsets,computers,cookers,fridgesetc.
Thiswillpreventthepossibilityofthestrongelectricalandelectromagnetic
emissions or interference given off by such devices adversely affecting the
performanceofyouramplier.

Turn off associated components
Thisminimisesthepotentialtodamageyouréloquence250i,oranyother

Connect a source component
Forexample,connectthebalancedoutputsofyourCDplayertotheleft
andrightbalanced(XLR)inputsattherearofyouréloquence250i.
Connect loudspeaker cables
Connecttheleftandrightchannelloudspeakercablestotheappropriate
speakerbindingpostsattherearoftheamplier.
Switch on source component
Turnonthesourcecomponent,makingsureyouhaveyourfavourite
recordingreadytoplay.
Quick Start
Switch on your éloquence 250i
Aftercheckingthesupplyvoltagecompatibilitywiththevoltageratingon
the rear panel, insert the power cord supplied into the rear of the unit and
intothewallsocket.Switchontheamplierusingthebuttononthefront
panel.
Select the appropriate input
Usingthe∧/∨buttonsonthefrontpanelofyouréloquence250i,orthe
remote control, select the input to which the source component is con-
nected.
Play your source material
Startplayingyourfavouriterecording.
Increase the volume
Slowlyincreasethevolumeonyouréloquence250itoachieveacomfort-
ablelisteninglevel.

signal,suitableforrecordingfromtheselectedsourceinput.Thisoutputis
disconnectedwhenINPUT5isselected;topreventanypotentiallydamag-
ingfeedbackloopsifthetapeoutputisconnectedtothisinput.
5 Trigger Input
Thetriggerinputallowsyouréloquence250iintegratedampliertobe
broughtinandoutofstandbybyaremotelyconnecteddevice;forexample,
anotheraudiocomponentorahomeautomationsystem.Thetriggerinput
usesamono3.5mm(8”)plugandacceptsvoltagesof0VDCupto12V
DC.Atriggervoltagebetween3Vand12VDCwillbringtheamplieroutof
standbyanditwillenterstandbywhenthetriggervoltageis0VDC.

TheACmainsfuseisuserserviceable,andshouldalwaysbereplacedwith
thesametypeandrating(seeTechnicalSpecications,page27).
Notes: Fusesdonotusuallyblowwithoutareason.Anydoubtsaboutfuse
failureshouldbeconveyeddirectlytoyourPerreauxdealer.
Ensureyouréloquence250iisdisconnectedfromthemainspowerbefore
attemptingtochangethefuse.

Thegroundterminalonyouréloquence250iismostoftenusedforthe
groundwireofaturntable,ifyouhavetheoptionalphonopreamplier
installed.Connectingthegroundwirefromyourturntablestonearmtothis
terminalusuallyminimisesanyhumorbuzzingtowhichtheturntablemay
otherwisebesusceptible.YourauthorisedPerreauxdealercanassistyou
inhandlingthisproblemifitshouldarise.
8 IR Output
TheIR(infrared)outputallowsyouréloquence250itorelayun-modulated
commandsreceivedviatheIRsensoronthefrontpanel,ortopassoncom-
mands from home automation systems or other components received via
theIRinput.
TheIRoutputusesamono3.5mm(8”)plug,andtransmitsvoltagesfrom

250i.TheLEDisilluminatedwhenthepowerswitchattherearoftheampli-
erisswitchedonandashesslowlytoindicatetheunitispoweringup
andinitialising.TheLEDashesatafastratetoindicatetheprotectionhas
trippedand/ortheamplierrequiresuserintervention.
3 Volume Control/Interface Knob
Rotatetoadjustthevolumeleveloftheloudspeakeroutputandthepreamp
output.ItdoesnotaffecttheTAPEoutput.
Thevolumeisraisedorloweredinprecise0.5dBincrementsthroughoutthe

5 Front Panel Buttons
Usethesebuttonstocontrolyouréloquence250iintegratedamplier.They
arealsousedtonavigatetheéloquencemenusystemand,alongwiththe
interfaceknob,makeanychangestothesettings.

6 Display
Theliquidcrystaldisplay(LCD)usedtoshowinformationrelatingtothe

7 Auxiliary Input
Theauxiliaryinputallowstheconnectionofaportableauxiliarysource,for
exampleaniPod™MP3player.Theauxiliaryinputacceptsa3.5mm(8”)
stereoplug.
Notes:TheAUXILIARYinputwillautomaticallybeselectedasthecurrent
sourcewhenaplugisconnected.Whentheplugisdisconnected,theinput
will revert to the last selected source, unless another source input was
selectedwhiletheauxiliarywasstillconnected.
Thevolumeoftheauxiliarysourceshouldbesettothehighestlevelwhich
providesthebestperformancewithoutdistortingtheaudio.
8 Headphone Output
Theheadphoneoutputallowsconnectionofheadphoneswitha6.4mm
(4”)plug.Headphoneswithanimpedanceofbetween32Ωand600Ωare
recommended.Whentheheadphonesareconnected,theoutputtothe
loudspeakersisdisconnected.

Thestandbykeyswitchestheamplierbetweennormaloperationand

on the display and operation can be resumed by pressing standby again or

7 Volume Up and Down
Thevolumekeysadjustthevolumeoftheamplier.Thevolumeisadjustedslowlyatrstandprogres-
sivelyincreasesthelongerthevolumekeysareheld.Thisallowsbothneadjustmentswhilemakingit
easiertomovequicklybetweenextremelylowandnormallisteninglevels.

8 Source Up and Down

The Menu System
Themenusystemcanbeusedtoconguretheéloquencetocustomiseaspectsofitsoperationtosuit
yourrequirements,tooperateinaparticulartypeofinstallation,ortoviewimportantfunctionaldata.
Home Screen
Thehomescreenprovideseasyaccesstothebasicfunctionsoftheintegratedamplier:volume
control,inputselectionandmute.Italsoprovidesaneasytoreadandhighlylegibledepictionofthe
selectedinputandcurrentvolumesetting.
Volume Control
Adjustthevolumesettingusingtheinterfaceknobonthefrontpanel(orusingtheremotecontrol).The
displaywillshowthevolumelevelindecibels(dB).Themaximumvolumesettingis+31.5dB,while
lowervolumesettingsprogressintothenegativerangewiththeminimumbeing-96.0dB.
Input Selection
Scrollthroughtheavailableinputsusingthe∧/∨buttonsonthefrontpanel(orusingtheremotecontrol).
Notes: Thelabelsfortheinputs,asdisplayedonthefrontpanel,canbecustomisedforyourconven-
ience(seeLabels,page19).Disablinganinput(seeEnable,page20)removesitfromselectionbyscroll-
ingfromthefrontpanelorremotecontrol(althoughitisstillavailableforselectionviathemenusystemand
theremotecontrols-keys).
Mute
MutethevolumebypressingtheMUTEbuttononthefrontpanel(orusingtheremotecontrol).The
mutemodeisindicatedbythevolumelevelbeingreplacedwithMUTEDinthedisplay,whichashes
whilemutemodeisenabled.
Ifyouincreasethevolumewhilemuteisenabled,themutemodewillbecancelledandthevolumewill
increasefromthemutedlevel.Thisisasafetymeasuretoavoidsituationswherethevolumemightbe
increasedwhilemuted,onlytohavethesystemun-mutedtoanunexpectedlyhighvolume.
Whenmuteiscancelled,thevolumelevelreplacesMUTEDinthedisplayandstopsashing.
Ifyoudecreasethevolumewhileattenuationisenabled,thevolumelevelwillreducewhilstremainingin
theattenuatedmode.Whenmuteiscancelled,thevolumelevelwillincreasebythesetattenuationlevel.
Notes: Ifthemutelevelissettoacustomisedsetting(seeMuteLevel,page22)thevolumelevelwill
beattenuatedbythisamountwhenmuteisenabled.Theattenuatedmodeisindicatedbythevolume
