Introduction
Reality reproduced:
Super Audio CD
The f t re in digital so nd reprod ction is no longer
limited to a close approach of reality. The new a dio
standard ís reality! The h man ear is no longer capable
of disting ishing a dible reality from digital reprod ction.
At Philips the f t re starts today with the SACD 1000
S per A dio Compact Disc player. This S per A dio CD
player combines s perior so nd q ality with the
possibility to play almost all existing a dio and video
formats with one player. Yo r precio s CD collection
will keep its val e!
The S per A dio standard is based on Direct Stream
Digital (DSD) technology. This new direct-stream digital
format comprises a 1-bit system, that has a digital
sampling freq ency 64 times higher than that of
conventional a dio CD. The res lts are spectac lar: a
freq ency response of over 50k Hz and a 120 dB
dynamic range over the entire a dible spectr m. Mixed
with as many of the original freq encies as possible the
a dio information, a dible for h man ears, so nds m ch
more nat ral.
All a dible freq encies are after all embedded in the
freq ency range as emitted by the so nd so rce. A
better reprod ction does not exist! For the first time
yo r ears will relive reality.
The next standard: hybrid disc
The S per A dio CD is the evol tion of CD that
provides ltra-high q ality so nd. Additional feat res like
m lti-channel can be offered. On the high density (HD)
S per A dio CD yo may have access to separate areas,
containing two-channel stereo and m lti-channel.
B t that is not all! The hybrid version of the SACD disc
g arantees backward compatibility with the installed base
of CD and DVD players. The hybrid disc contains,
besides the HD layer, a standard density CD layer with
conventional two-channel stereo CD a dio information.
The two layers are read from the same side of the disc.
The HD layer is read by a DVD laser. The bottom
reflective layer with conventional CD so nd, is read by
the CD laser thro gh the second, semi-transmissive HD
layer.
SACD 1000; reality in sound...
and vision
The SACD 1000 will not only s rprise yo with its
s perior reprod ction of almost all existing a dio
formats. Connected to yo r TV yo r SACD 1000
presents VCD and DVD video information as perfect
digital st dio-q ality pict res with tr ly 3-dimensional
digital m lti-channel a dio. Story seq ences can be
screened from yo r own choice of camera angle. Yo
can break down lang age barriers with so nd tracks in
as many as eight lang ages, pl s - if available on disc - as
many as 16 s btitles. Video becomes a new experience.
And that makes the SACD 1000 an essential component
in a state of the art a dio-video config ration.
Super Audio CD
Yo will recognise S per A dio CDs by
the logo. There are three types of
S per A dio CDs: single layer, d al
layer and hybrid discs. Each type may
contain two areas of recorded information. A High
Q ality Stereo area and a High Q ality M lti-channel
area.
- The single layer disc may contain both information
areas.
- The d al layer disc may contain both information areas
b t a do ble amo nt of information can be stored on
the disc beca se of the second layer.
- The hybrid disc may not only contain both information
areas b t also a second, standard CD layer which makes
it playable on standard CD players.
Recorded information may vary per area. This is
indicated in the disc inlay. Areas can be selected
separately before or d ring playback. When playing
S per A dio CDs the player can be operated via the
keys on the player front and the remote control or via
the On Screen Display on yo r TV.

Audio CD (CDDA)
A dio CDs contain m sic tracks only.
Yo will recognise CDs by their logo.
Yo can play them in conventional style
thro gh a stereo system, sing the keys
on the remote control and/or front panel, or via the TV
sing the On Screen Display (OSD).
Note: Please note that the DTS audio format on the SACD
1000 is only supported on DVD. This product does not
support the playbac of DTS encoded CDs.
Digital video
DVD-Video ses state-of-the-art MPEG 2 data
compression technology to register an entire movie on a
single 5-inch disc. DVD’s variable bitrate compression,
r nning at p to 9.8 Mbits/second, capt res even the
most complex pict res in their original q ality.
The crystal-clear digital pict res have a horizontal
resol tion of over 500 lines, with 720 pixels (pict re
elements) to each line. This resol tion is more than
do ble that of VHS, s perior to Laser Disc, and entirely
comparable with digital masters made in recording
st dios.
DVD-Video discs conform to either the PAL or NTSC
video standard. This d al-standard player can play both
types, and presents them in the best possible way on
yo r m ltistandard TV screen.
As the niversal video system of the f t re, DVD-Video
offers optimal pict res on any TV screen.
DVD-Video
Yo will recognise DVD-Video discs by
the logo.
Depending on the material on the disc
(a movie, video clips, a drama series,
etc.) these discs may have one or more Titles, and each
Title may have one or more Chapters. To make access
easy and convenient, yo r player lets yo move between
Titles, and also between Chapters.
Video CD
Yo will recognise Video CDs by the
logo.
Depending on the material on the disc
(a movie, video clips, a drama series,
etc.) these discs may have one or more tracks, and
tracks may have one or more indexes, as indicated on
the disc case. To make access easy and convenient, yo r
player lets yo move between tracks, and between
indexes.

Unpacking
First check and identify the contents of yo r SACD-
player package, as listed below:
- SACD-player
- Remote Control Handset with separately-packed
batteries
- 2-core power cord

- Video cable
- User Man al.
If any item sho ld be damaged or missing, please inform
yo r s pplier witho t delay.
Keep the packaging materials; yo may need them to
transport yo r player in the f t re.

●Place the player on a firm, flat s rface.
●Keep away from domestic heating eq ipment and
direct s nlight.
●In a cabinet, allow abo t 2 inch (5 cm) of free space
all aro nd the player for adeq ate ventilation.
●If the SACD-player cannot read SACDs/CDs/DVDs
correctly, se a commonly available cleaning
CD/DVD to clean the lens before taking the SACD-
player to be repaired. Other cleaning methods may
destroy the lens. Always keep the tray closed to
avoid d st on the lens.
●When replacing from a cold to a warm environment
allow the SACD player to acclimatize for at least 2
ho rs in order to avoid damage. S ddenly placed in
a warm environment the lens may clo d over.
Playing a SACD/CD/DVD is not possible then. Wait
ntil the moist re evaporates.
●The player sho ld not be exposed to dripping or
splashing, no objects filled with liq ids s ch as vases,
sho ld be placed on the player.

Preparation
General notes
- Depending on yo r amplifier/receiver/Stereo System
there are vario s ways yo co ld connect the player.
These are explained in the chapter below.
- For some connections settings for digital and/or analog
o tp t are req ired. These settings have to be made in
the ‘Personal Preferences’ men which is only accessible
via yo r TV screen. In these cases yo will need to
connect the player to the TV as well.
- Please refer to yo r amplifier/receiver/Stereo System,
TV and any other User Man al(s) as necessary to make
the optimal connections.
Caution: Do not connect the player’s audio
output to the phono input of your audio system.
Connecting to audio equipment -
analog
Connecting to an amplifier/receiver
equipped with two channel analog stereo
●Connect the a dio Left and Right o tp ts for Front
speaker connection (1) to the corresponding
sockets on yo r amplifier, receiver or stereo
system. For this se the a dio cable s pplied.
Important: For the best sound quality with
playback of audio CDs and stereo SACDs,
always use the left and right connector of the
high-quality stereo/Multi-channel audio output.
The separate stereo output is intended only for
connection to video equipment such as a TV set.
Connecting to a Multi-channel
Audio/(Video) receiver with 6 connectors
This SACD player contains a m lti-channel decoder. This
enables playback of SACDs recorded in M lti-channel.
Yo only need to select M lti-channel sing the So nd
Mode key.

speaker connection (1) to the corresponding inp t
sockets on yo r receiver. For this se the a dio

S rro nd speaker connection (2) to the

Note: If the subwoofer is equipped with its own amplifier, the
Subwoofer connection should be connected to the subwoofer
directly.

Connecting to an amplifier/receiver
equipped with Dolby ro Logic
For an amplifier/receiver with Dolby S rro nd, yo may
connect yo r SACD player in the same way as described
for Dolby Pro Logic.

1Connect the a dio Left and Right o tp ts for Front
speaker connection (1) to the corresponding inp ts
on the Dolby Pro Logic A dio/Video
amplifier/receiver, sing the a dio cable s pplied.
2Set Analog O tp t to Dolby S rro nd in the
‘Personal Preferences’ men .
If your amplifier/receiver is equipped with a
Dolby Digital decoder
●Connect the player as described in chapter
‘Connecting to an A dio/(Video) receiver with m lti
channel decoder’.
If you connect the player to a TV equipped with a
Dolby ro Logic decoder
●Connect the player to the TV as described in
chapter ‘Connecting to a TV’.
Connecting to audio equipment -
digital
The digital o tp t of the SACD1000 does not provide
PCM (P lse Code Mod lation) signals. If yo r
amplifer/receiver can decode only PCM and no m lti-
channel signals s ch as Dolby Digital, do not connect
yo r SACD player via the digital inp t. This co ld
damage yo r amplifier and/or speakers.
Connecting to an Audio/(Video) receiver
with multi-channel decoder (Dolby Digital,
M EG 2 and DTS)
Digital Multi-channel sound (not for SACD)
For this yo need a m lti-channel A/V receiver that
s pports one or more of the DVD a dio formats
s pported by yo r SACD player (MPEG 2, Dolby Digital
and DTS). For this yo can check the receiver man al
and the logos on the front of the receiver.
1Connect the player’s digital a dio o tp t (optical 4
or coaxial 5) to the corresponding inp t on the
receiver. For this se the digital a dio cable (coaxial)
is s pplied. Optical is optional.
Notes:
- If the audio format of the digital output does not match the
capabilities of your receiver, the receiver will produce a
strong, distorted sound. The audio format of the DVD disc in
play is displayed in the Status Window, when changing the
audio format.
- 6 Channel Digital Surround Sound via digital connection can
only be obtained if your receiver is equipped with a Digital
Multi-channel decoder. If your receiver does not contain a
decoder, you can ma e the analog connections as described
in chapter ‘Connecting to a Multi-channel Audio/(Video)
receiver with 6 connectors’ to obtain 6 Channel Digital
Surround Sound.
- SACD Multi-channel sound cannot be obtained via digital
connection.

Connecting to a TV
Notes
- Depending on your TV there are various ways you could
connect the player. These are shown in the illustration below.
- Please refer to your TV, VCR, and any other User Manual(s)
as necessary to ma e the optimal connections.
- Do not connect your SACD-player via your VCR, because
the video quality could be distorted by the copy protection
system.
1Connect the E roconnector (TO TV-I/O 6) to the
corresponding connector on the TV sing the
E roconnector cable s pplied.
If your TV is not equipped with a Euroconnector
you can select one of the following alternative
connections:
S-Video (Y/C) connection
1Connect the S-VIDEO OUT (Y/C) socket (7) to the
corresponding socket on the TV sing an optional
S-Video cable.
●If yo wish to receive the so nd via yo r TV
connect the STEREO OUT Left and Right o tp t
sockets (1) to the corresponding sockets on the TV
sing the a dio cable s pplied.
Video CVBS connection
1Connect the VIDEO OUT (CVBS) socket (8) to the
corresponding socket on the TV sing the video
cable s pplied.
2If yo wish to receive the so nd via yo r TV
connect the STEREO OUT Left and Right o tp t
sockets (1) to the corresponding sockets on the TV

audio L/R as well as the audio from the Euroconnector will
contain the center spea er audio.

Delay times - DVD only
Yo r SACD player is set to reprod ce correctly
synchronized Digital S rro nd So nd in a listening area
where the s rro nd speakers are abo t 150cm nearer
to the listening position than the front speakers, and the
center speaker is in line with the front speakers. To
adj st for other listening area arrangements, adapt delay
times according to the following:
Digital Surround
Meas re the distances in centimeters from the front
speaker plane and from the s rro nd speaker plane to
the listening positioning plane.
S bstract the s rro nd distance from the front distance
and divide by 30. The res lt is the req ired S rro nd
Channel delay time in milliseconds.
If the center speaker is on the front speaker plane, no
center speaker delay is needed. Yo can adj st the delay
time in the “User Preference Settings”. See Personal
preference - So nd - Speaker Settings. If, however, it is
nearer to the listening position, meas re the distance in
centimeters between the front and center speaker
planes, and divide by 30. The res lt is the req ired
Center Channel delay time in milliseconds.
Dolby ro Logic
If the delay times for S rro nd Channel and Center
Channel are set for Digital S rro nd mode, the delay
times for Dolby Pro Logic mode will a tomatically be
calc lated and set.
Connecting the power supply
1Check if the mains voltage as shown on the type
plate (on the back of the player) corresponds to
yo r local mains voltage. If not, adj st the voltage
selector (1) to match with yo r local mains s pply.
2Pl g the female end of the power cable s pplied into
the Power connector MAINS (2) on the rear of the
player.
3Pl g the male end of the cord into an AC o tlet.
Note: When the player is in the STANDBY or OFF position, it
is still consuming some power. If you wish to disconnect your
player completely from the mains, withdraw the plug from
the AC Outlet.
Caution: Only qualified service personnel should
remove the cover or attempt to service this
device.

Infra red remote control
Loading the batteries
1Open the battery compartment cover.
2Insert two 'AA' (LR-6) batteries as indicated inside
the battery compartment.
3Close the cover.
Caution: Do not mix old and new batteries. And
never mix different types of batteries (standard,
alkaline, etc.)
Remote control device code
To operate the player via the remote control witho t
response of a second DVD player, yo can program
both player and remote control to se a second set of
remote control codes.
The defa lt system code is Code 1.

1Press ON/OFF to switch off the player.
2Sim ltaneo sly press and hold SOUND MODE
and /O EN/CLOSE on the player.
3While holding the b ttons in step 2 press ON/OFF
to switch the player on again.
4Contin e holding SOUND MODE and
/O EN/CLOSE for three seconds or ntil
RCCODE2 appears on the player’s display.
➤The player will now be programmed to respond
to Code 2.
➤When step 1 - 4 are repeated the system code is
set to Code 1 again.
Selecting the remote control code

Operation
General explication
About this manual
This man al gives the basic instr ctions for operating
this SACD player.
When playing DVD discs the player may not respond to
all operating commands. Some DVD discs are prod ced
in a way that req ires specific operation or allows only
limited operation d ring playback. When this occ rs,
please refer to the instr ctions in the disc inlay. When a
appears on the TV screen, the operation is not
permitted by the player or the disc.
Remote control operation
- Unless otherwise stated, all operations can be carried
o t with the remote control. Always point the remote
control directly at the player, making s re there are no
obstr ctions in the path of the infrared beam.
- When there are corresponding keys on the front
panel, they can also be sed.
Menu bar operation
- A n mber of operations can also be carried o t via the
men bar on the screen. The men bar can be called p
by pressing any of the following keys on the remote
control: MENU SYSTEM, T, C, Angle, Audio
Language, Subtitle Language, Zoom and FTS.
- The following f nctions can be operated via the men
bar:
- Personal Preferences;
- Track/title selection;
- Chapter selection;
- A dio lang age selection;
- S btitle lang age selection;
- Angle selection;
- Zoom;
- Colo r selection;
- Video FTS selection;
- So nd mode;
- Pict re by pict re;
- Slow motion;
- Fast motion;
- Time search.
- The vario s items can be selected with the t u
(left/right c rsor) keys or by pressing the relevant keys
on the remote control.
- By pressing MENU SYSTEM the men bar will
disappear from the screen.
- When selecting an item in the men bar, the selected
item will be highlighted and the c rsor keys (on the
remote control), to operate this item are displayed
below the icon.
- < or > indicates that more items are available at the
left/right hand side of the men bar. Press tu(left/right
c rsor) to select these items.
Switching on
1If necessary, switch on the TV and select the video
inp t for yo r SACD player.
2Press ON/OFF on the player front panel or
STANDBY on the remote control.

Note: When you switch off the player by means of the
ON/OFF switch on the front panel, the output of equipment
connected to Scart II will not be passed through to the TV set
on Scart I and vice versa.

In this mode yo can set yo r personal preferences for a
n mber of player feat res. Some settings however m st
be made.This depends on the type of a dio eq ipment
connected. For this see ‘Connecting to a dio
eq ipment’.
General operation
●Press MENU SYSTEM on
the remote control.

TV Shape
If yo have a wide screen (16:9) TV, select 16:9.
If yo have a reg lar (4:3) TV, select 4:3.
In this case yo can also select between:
Letterbox for a ‘wide-screen’ pict re with black bars top
and bottom, or Pan Scan, for a f ll-height pict re with
the sides trimmed. Provided this is avaiIable on the disc
in play. If a disc has Pan Scan, the pict re then moves
(scans) horizontally to keep the main action on the
screen.
Black level shift (NTSC only)
Adapts the colo r dynamics to obtain richer contrasts.
Select ON or OFF .
Video shift
Factory setting is s ch that the video will be centered on
yo r screen. Use this setting to personalize the position
of the pict re on yo r TV by scrolling it to the left or
right.
Colour settings
(only when connected via Euroconnector)
Yo can select one of fo r predefined sets of colo r
settings and one set (Personal) which yo can define
yo rself.

Digital and Analog output Settings for DVD/VCD
Digital output
Factory setting is ALL. If yo connect eq ipment with a
digital inp t change the setting to All or PCM (P lse
Code Mod lation - see below) only. Both coaxial and
optical o tp ts are then switched on (not for SACD). If
yo r eq ipment doesn't incl de a digital m ltichannel
decoder, set the digital o tp t to PCM. Both coaxial and
optical o tp ts are then switched on. See ‘Digital and
Analog o tp t Settings for DVD/VCD’ above.
CM output
PCM (P lse Code Mod lation) is a method of encoding
a dio information in a digital format. PCM samples
analog a dio information at a fixed sampling rate and
meas res the amplit de (vol me) of the a dio signal with
a precision determined by the sampling size. A dio is
encoded on CDs in the PCM format with a sampling
freq ency of 44.1 kHz and a 16-bit sampling size. A 16-
bit sample size can contain 65,536 possible levels of
so nd vol me which corresponds to a dynamic range of
96dB. A DVD can be encoded in PCM with a sampling
freq ency of p to 96 kHz and a 24-bit sample size.
The PCM setting on yo r player allows yo to select the
PCM sample-rate freq ency of the analog and digital
o tp ts. Yo can set it to either 48 kHz or 96 kHz.
Factory setting is 48 kHz.
Notes when sing digital o tp ts:
●If yo have a digital amplifier with a PCM inp t of 96
kHz, connected via digital o tp t, choose this
freq ency in the men . Do not choose 96 kHz if
yo r amplifier has a digital PCM inp t of 48 kHz
since then a strong distorted so nd may be
prod ced.
●D e to copy-protection the digital o tp ts may be
m ted when 96 kHz is selected, while the analog
o tp ts will remain active. Switching the PCM
o tp t back to 48 kHz will reactivate the digital
o tp t.
Analog output
See Digital and Analog o tp t settings for DVD/VCD.
Select Stereo, Dolby S rro nd, 3D So nd or M lti-
channel. Factory setting is M lti-channel.
M lti-channel : Select this setting when sing a m lti-
channel a dio/(video) receiver with six
inp ts. In this mode, the player will
perform Dolby Digital 5.1-channel
decoding when applicable, and Dolby
Pro Logic decoding on DVD-Video and
Video-CD discs with 2-channel
so ndtracks. No Dolby Pro Logic
decoding is done with (S per) A dio
CD discs.
Dolby S rro nd : Select this setting when sing
eq ipment with a Dolby S rro nd Pro
Logic decoder. In this setting the 5.1
a dio channels (Dolby Digital, MPEG-
2) are downmixed to a Dolby
S rro nd compatible 2-channel o tp t.
3D-So nd : In a set p witho t rear speakers
(analog stereo o tp t), 3D So nd
remixes the six channels of digital
s rro nd into a two speaker o tp t,
while retaining all of the original a dio
information. The res lt is the listening
sensation of being s rro nded by
m ltiple speakers.
D ring DVD or Video-CD playback, these val es can be
selected directly with the ‘SOUND MODE’ key.
Night Mode
Optimizes the dynamics of the so nd with low vol me
playback. This setting can only be sed with discs that
s pport the Night Mode feat re.
Speaker settings
Allows yo to select speaker settings, vol me balance
and delay time and to test the speaker settings. Speaker
settings are only active on the M lti-channel A dio O t
O tp ts. Speaker settings will not be sed d ring
playback in SACD Stereo or M lti-channel So nd Mode.

Karaoke vocal

karaoke DVD is being played. The karaoke channels on
the disc will then be mixed to a normal stereo so nd.

Select the req ired Men , A dio and S btitle lang age.
Menu language - The On Screen Men s will be displayed
in the lang age yo choose. Yo can choose from 8
different lang ages.
Audio language - The so nd as well as the DVD disc
men will be in the lang age yo choose provided this is
available on the disc in play. If not, speech will revert to
the first spoken lang age on the disc. Yo can choose
from 16 different lang ages.
Subtitle language - The s btitles will be in the lang age
yo choose provided this is available on the disc in play.
If not, s btitles will revert to the first s btitle lang age
on the disc. Yo can choose from 16 different lang ages.
A dio lang age and S btitle lang age can also be adapted
via the Men bar on the screen.

Sound Mode (SACD only)
Selection of defa lt SACD So nd Mode: Stereo or M lti-
channel. So nd Mode setting can be changed d ring
playback with the So nd Mode b tton on the player or
the remote control. When selecting M lti-channel make
s re yo r so nd mode is set p for M lti-channel
reprod ction.
Access Control (DVD/VCD only)
Access Control contains the following feat res:
Disc Loc - When Disc Lock is set to ON, a 4-digit PIN
code needs to be entered in order to play discs.
Parental control - Allows the conditional presentation of
DVD discs containing Parental Control information.
Status Window
Displays the c rrent stat s of the player and is displayed
together with the men bar. In STOP mode it is
displayed together with the ‘Temporary Feedback’ Field
in the defa lt screen. See ‘On Screen Display
information; Factory setting is ON. Select OFF to
s ppress display of the Stat s Window.
Low ower Standby
If this setting is set to ON, the player will go in low-
power standby when the Standby b tton (remote
control) is pressed. While in low-power standby, scart
AUX-I/O will no longer be available. All external
apparat s connected to it will be ignored.
BC
This feat re allows yo to disable or enable the PBC
(Playback Control) men of VCD discs. See nder
‘Special VCD feat res’: Factory settings is ON
