0. General
This section explainsthe different types of pixeldefects and
defines acceptable defectlevels of eachtype. In orderto qualify
for repair orreplacement under warranty, the numberof pixel
defects on aTFT LCD panel must exceedthese acceptable levels.
1. Definition of Pixels and Subpixels
A pixel,or picture element, is composedof three subpixelsin the
primary colors ofred, green andblue. Many pixelstogether from
an image. Whenall subpixels ofa pixel arelit, the threecolored
subpixels together appearas a singlewhite pixel. Whenall are
dark, the threecolored subpixels togetherappear as asingle black
pixel. Other combinationsof lit anddark subpixels appearas
single pixels ofother colors.
2. Types of PixelDefects
Pixel and subpixeldefects appear onthe screen indifferent ways.
Bright dot defects
Bright dot defectsappear as pixelsor subpixels thatare always lit
or "On". Theseare the typesof bright dotdefects:.
One lit red, green or blue subpixel
Two adjacentlit subpixels:
- Red +Blue = Purple
- Red +Green = Yellow
- Green +Blue = Cyan(Light Blue)
Three adjacent litsubpixels
(One white pixel)
Black dot defects
Black dot defectsappear as pixelsor subpixels thatare always
dark or "Off". These are the types of black dot defects:
One dark subpixel
Two orthree adjacent darksubpixels
3. Pixel DefectTolerances
In order toqualify for repairor replacement dueto pixel defects
during the warrantyperiod, a TFTLCD panel in a PHILIPS flat
panel monitor musthave pixel orsubpixel defects exceedingthe
tolerances listed inthe following tables.
