simple-to-usevideo recorders (VCR) on the market.With this VCR you
can record and play VHS-standardcassettes.

AThe video recorder does not contain any components that can
be repaired by the customer.When the appliance is connected
to the power supply thereare some components that are
constantly operational.To switch off the video recorder
completely you must disconnect itfrom the power supply.
BNote that this power pack isdesigned for a power supplyof
220-240V/50Hz.
BEnsure that air can circulatefreely through the ventilationslots
on the video recorder.
BEnsure that no objects or liquidsenter the video recorder.If

Important for the United Kingdom
This apparatus is fitted with an approved moulded 13 Amp
plug. To change a fuse in this typeof plug proceedas follows:
aRemove fuse cover and fuse.
bFix new fuse which should be a BS1362 3A, A.S.T.A. or
BSI approved type.
cRefit the fuse cover.
If the fitted plug is not suitable for your socket outlets, it should
be cut off and an appropriate plug fittedin its place.
If the mains plug contains a fuse, this should have a value of
3A. If a plug without a fuse is used, the fuse at the distribution
board should not be greater than 5A.
DNote: * The severed plug mustbe destroyed to avoid a
possible shock hazard should it be inserted into a 13A
socketelsewhere.
How to connect a plug:
The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with
the following code:
BLUE - ’NEUTRAL’ (’N’)
BROWN - ’LIVE’ (’L’)
dThe BLUE wire must be connected to the terminal which
is marked with the letter ’N’ or coloured BLACK.
eThe BROWN wire must be connected to the terminal
which is marked with the letter ’L’or coloured RED.
fDo not connect either wires to the earth terminal in the
plug which is marked with the letter ’E’ or by the safety
earth symbol \or coloured green or green-and-yellow.
Before replacing the plug cover, make certain that the cord
grip is clamped over the sheath of the lead - not simply over
the two wires.
Connecting to the TV-set
When you install your Video recorder for the firsttime,please
read:
Ethe paragraph ’Connecting with scart cable and Easy
Link/NexTView’, when your TV-set is equipped with ’Easy
Link/NexTView’.
Ethe paragraph ’Connecting with scart cable without Easy
Link/NexTView’, when yourTV-set is not equipped with
’EasyLink/NexTView’.

you do not use a scart cable.
Connecting with scart cable and
’Easy link/NexTView’
With the function ’Easy Link/NexTView’, your video recorder
can exchange information with the television. Heed the
operating instruction of your television.
With ’Easy Link/NexTView’the TV channels from the TV will
automatically be loaded.
aRemove the aerial cable plug from your TV set and insert
it into the 2socket at the back of the video recorder.
bPlug one end of the aerial cable provided into the TV
socket on the video recorderand the otherend into the
aerial input socket on your TV set.
cPlug one end of the special scart cable provided into the
AV1EXT1 scart socket at the back of the video recorder
and the other end into the scartsocketon your TVset.
dSwitch on the TV set.
eInsert one end of the mains cable into the mains socket
4at the back of the video recorder and the other end
into the wall socket.
fThe video recorder will automatically load all TV chan-
nels stored on your TV, in the same sequence.
This may take several minutes.
When all data (TV channels, language, country) has been
copied, the following text appears on the TV screen:
’EASY LINK LOADING COMPLETE’.
gCheck if clock and date are correct. Read the paragraph
’Setting Time/Date’ in thischapter.

Connecting with scart cable without
’Easy Link/NexTView’
If your television does not have a scart (EURO-AV) socket,
please do not read further here, but turn to the next paragraph
’Connecting without scart cable’.
aRemove the aerial cable plug from your TV set and insert
it into the 2socket at the back of the video recorder.
bPlug one end of the aerial cable provided into the TV
socket on the video recorderand the otherend into the
aerial input socket on your TV set.
cPlug one end of the scart cable into the scart socket
AV1EXT1 on the back of the video recorder and the other
end into the scart socketon your TVset.
dSwitch on the TV set.
eInsert one end of the mains cable into the mains socket
4at the back of the video recorder and plug the other
end into the wall socket.
fWhen your TV set automatically switches to programme
number e.g.: ’EXT’, ’0’, or ’AV’, a welcoming text appears
on the TV screen.
When your TV set does not switch automatically, select
the required programme number manually (see instruc-
tion manual TV set).
gSubsequently, read the paragraph ’InitialInstallation’in
the section ’Autoinstall’.
Connecting without scart cable
aRemove the aerial cable plug from your TV set and insert
it into the 2socket at the back of the video recorder.
bPlug one end of the aerial cable provided into the TV
socket on the video recorderand the otherend into the
aerial input socket on your TV set.
cInsert one end of the mains cable into the mains socket
4at the back of the video recorder and plug the other
end into the wall socket.
dSwitch on your TV set and select the programme number
that you have chosen for video playback (see operating
manual for your TV set).
eThe video recorder will now send a welcoming text on
UHF-channel CH35 or 583MHz.
fTune in the TV set in the UHF wave band until this picture
appears.

Autoinstall
The video recorder will search for all TV channels. It stores TV
channels found in the following sequence: BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV,
CH 4, CH 5, SKY, others.
Initial Installation
aIf the aerial (antenna) has been connected to the video
recorder,pressthe OK button. Please continue with the
next paragraph at step e.
Successive Installation
aSwitch on the TV set. If required, select the programme
number for the video recorder.
bPressthe MENU button. The main menu appears.
cSelect the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
dSelect the line ’AUTOINSTALL’ withthe menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
e’AUTOINSTALL’ starts.This can take several minutes.

Automatic TV Channel Allocation
(FOLLOW TV)
With this function the video recorder maintainsthe same
channel sequence as on the TV set, in case you connected
your videorecorder to a TV set without scart cable. This only
functions if the video recorder (socket AV1EXT1 ) and the TV
set are connected with a scart cable. Additional equipment
connected to socket AV2 EXT2 must be switched off.
DWith ’Connecting with scart cable and ’Easy Link/NexT-
View’, this function will start the data transfer.
aSwitch on the TV set. If required, select the programme
number for the video recorder.
bPressthe MENU button. The main menu appears.
cSelect the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
dSelect the line ’FOLLOW TV’ with the menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton. Take no-
tice of the message on the TV screen.
ePressthe OK button.
If the video recorder recognizes that the TV set has been
connected with a scart cable, ’TV’ 01’ appears in the
display.
EWhen ’NOTV’ (no signal from TV set) appears in the
display, the TV channels can not be allocated automati-
cally. In this case, read paragraph: ’Manual TV Channel
Number Allocation’.
fSelect programme number ’1’ on the TV set.
gConfirm with the OK button on the video recorder-re-
mote control. The video recorder compares the TV
channels on the TV set and the video recorder.
If the video recorder found the same TV channel as the
TV set, then it stores it at ’P01’.
hWait until e.g.: ’TV’ 02’ appears.
iSelect the next programme number, e.g.: ’2’ on the TV set.
jConfirm with the OK button on the video recorder-re-
mote control.
DIf you allocated the wrong TV channeL, you can go back
one step with the menu button Q.

kRepeat steps hto juntil all TV channels have been
allocated.
lTo finish, press the MENU button.
Connecting a decoder or additional
equipment
You can also connect additional equipment to the AV2 EXT2
socket. For instance: decoder, satellite receiver or camera
recorder.
You can connect a HIFI-stereo set to the sockets
AUX OUT L R (audio output left/right) and AUX IN L R (audio in-
put left/right).
Allocating a decoder
With this function, the connected decoder will automatically
be activated for the TV programme required.
DWith ’Connecting with scart cable and ’Easy Link/NexT-
View’ the decoder must be activated for the TV set.
aSwitch on the TV set. If required, select the programme
number for the video recorder.
bOn the video recorder, select the TV programme you wish
to link with the decoder function, using the P;or
P=button or the digit buttons 0-9 .
cPressthe MENU button. The main menu appears.
dSelect the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
eSelect the line ’MANUAL SEARCH’ with the menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
fSelect the line ’DECODER’ with the menu buttons P=or
P;.
gSelect function ’ON’ with the menu buttons Qor P.
When you select ’OFF’, the function will be switched off.
hConfirm with the OK button.
DWhen the function is switched on, ’DEC’ appears in the
display.
iTo end, press the MENU button.
Manual TV Channel Search
In certain cases the ’Automatic TV Channel Search’ may not
be able to find all of the TV channels (e.g. coded TV channels).
In that case, use this manual method to set the channels.
DWith ’Connecting with scart cable and ’Easy Link/NexT-
View’ the videorecorder automaticallyloads the TV
channels from the TV set. Hence, some lines are not
functional.
aSwitch on the TV set. If required, select the programme
number for the video recorder.
bPressthe MENU button. The main menu appears.
cSelect the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the menu button P.
dSelect the line ’MANUAL SEARCH’ with the menu buttons

EIf you don’t know the frequency or channel of the TV
channel of your choice, press the menu button Pto
start the channel search.
gIn the line ’PROGRAMME NUMBER’ select the pro-
gramme number you want e.g.: ’01’, using the menu
buttons Qor P.
hIf you want to change the TV channel name, press the
Pbutton in line ’TV CHANNEL NAME’.
ESelect the character you want to change with the Qor
the Pbutton. Change the character with the P=or
the P;button. Select the next character in the same
way.
EKeep pressing the menu button Puntil the cursor dis-
appears.
iIn the line ’NICAM’, select funtion ’ON’or ’OFF’with the
Por Qbutton.
jIf you want to change the automatic tv channel setting,
select the line ’FINE TUNING’.
With the menu buttons Qor Pyou can vary the auto-
matic tv channel setting. Important: This re-tuning is only
necessary and useful in special cases, e.g.: when there
are stripes on the picture with cable-TV systems.
kPressthe OK button to store the TV channel.
DIf you want to search for further TV channels, start again
at step f.
lTo end, press the MENU button.
Monitor function
You can switch back and forth betweenTV receptionand
video recorder reception with the MONITOR button. This only
functions when you used a scart cable to connect the video
recorder to your TV set and if your TV set responds to this
switch-over.
Sort/Clear TV channels manually
DWith ’Connecting with Easy Link/NexTView’ the video
recorder automatically loads the TV channels from the TV
set. Hence, you can not select this function.
aSwitch on the TV set. If required, select the programme
number for the video recorder.
bPressthe MENU button. The main menu appears.
cSelect the line ’INSTALLATION’with the menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
dSelect the line ’TV CHANNEL ALLOCATION’with the
menu buttons P=or P;and confirm with the P
button.

Setting the clock and the date
If the time in the video recorder display isnot correct or if
’--:--’ appears in the display, please set the clock manually.
aSwitch on the TV set. If required, select the programme

DIf a TV channel which transmits TXT/PDC is stored with
programme number ’P01’, time (from TXT) and date (from
PDC) will automatically be taken from the TXT/PDC
information.
User guide (OSD)
With OSD (On Screen Display) the corresponding functions
appear on the TV screen as a menu. The mostimportant
button-functions are displayedat the bottom of the screen.
ECall up the menu: With the MENU button.
ESelect a line: With the P=or P;button.
ESelect within a line: With the menu buttons Qor
P.
EEnter/Alter: Withthe Qor Por with the 0-9 button.
EStore: Withthe OK button.
EConfirm: With the menu button P.
EExit menu: With the MENU button.
Emergency interrupt
Both the video recorder and the remote control have an
’Emergency interrupt’button. You can usethe STANDBYmbut-
ton to interrupt any function.
Whenever you have operating problems you can simply
interrupt the function and start again.
You can practise operating your set without any worries. No
matter which buttons you press, you cannot damage it.
Important notes for operation
EYou can switch on with the STOP hbutton, the 0-9 but-
tons or by inserting a cassette.
EKeep your video recorder connected to the mains at all
times to ensure that programmed recordings can be
made and that the television functions normally. The
power consumption required is less than 4W (saving
energy mode).
EWhen the video recorder is disconnected from the mains,
TV channels will be strored typically 1 year, and
clock/timer data will be stored typically 7 hours.
Saving energy
You can choose between two methods of switching to
standby.
Normal method: Switch to standby using the STANDBY mbut-
ton. The clock time remains displayed.
If the clock has not been set, ’--:--’ appears.
To save energy: Press the STANDBYmbutton twice. The clock
time disappears from the display.

Playback a cassette
aInsert a cassette into the cassette slot.
bPressthe PLAYGplayback button.
cTo stop, press the STOP hbutton.
dTo eject, Press the STOP/EJECT?button on the set.
DSome hired cassettes may have a poor picture/sound
quality. This is not a fault in your set. Please read the
section ’Eliminating picture interference’.
DSome functions switch off automatically after a while
(e.g.: Pause, Still Picture, Scanning). This helps to protect
the cassette and prevent unnecessary power consump-
tion.
NTSC Playback
With this set you can playback cassettesthat have been
recorded on another video recorder in the NTSC standard.
This only works for PAL-televisionsets which are suitable for a
picture frequency of 60 Hz.
During NTSC playback ’60HZ’ appears in the display.
DDuring NTSC-playback some special features (e.g. still
picture) are not possible.
Tape position indication
aDuring playback press the COUNTER button.
bSelect one of the following options:
’TIME USED’ to indicate the time used on the tape
’TIME LEFT’ to indicate the time left on the tape
’COUNTER’ to indicate the actual position on the tape
DWiththe OK button, you can superimpose the actual
tape position on the TV screen.
Searching for tape position with picture
(picture search)
aDuring playback, press the H(reverse)or I(for-
ward) button once or several times.
bTo interrupt at the position required, pressthe PLAY G
button.
DDuring picture search, the picture quality is affected and
the sound is turned off.
Still picture/Slow motion
aPressthe STILLRbutton. A still picture appears on the
screen.
bEach time you press STILL Ragain the picture will
move on one step.
cWhen you hold the STILL Rbutton the picture will be
played in slow motion.
dWhen you press the Ibutton several times, you have
a choice of several playback speeds.
During slow motion the sound is switched off.
Searching for tape position without picture
(wind/rewind)
aStop the tape with the STOPhbutton.
bPressthe H(reverse)or I(forward)button.
cTo interrupt at the position required, pressthe STOPh
button.
Instant View
With this function you can switch to picture search during
wind/rewind.
aIf you hold the H(rewind)or I(wind) button dur-
ing wind or rewind, you will switch to picture search.
bIf you release the button, the video recorder will
automatically switch back to rewindor wind.

Automatic search for tape position
(Index search)
At the beginning of each recording, the video recorder marks
the tape with a index code mark.
aPressthe INDEXEbutton. Then press the Ibutton to
select the next code mark or the Hbutton for the pre-
vious code mark.
bWhen the video recorder finds the code mark or a blank
space it will automatically switch to playback.
DYou can only search for a blank space with recordings
made on a video recorder that does not have this index
code mark function.
Eliminating picture interference
When the picture quality is poor, please proceed as follows:
Tracking during playback
aDuring playback, press the MENU button.
bSelect the line ’PLAY FUNCTIONS’ withthe menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
cSelect the line ’MANUAL TRACKING’ withthe menu
buttons P=or P;.
dHold the menu buttons Qor Puntil the playback
quality is at its best.
eConfirm with the OK button.
fTo end, press the MENU button. This setting will remain
until you remove the cassette.
Tracking during still picture
If the still picture vibratesvertically, you can improve the still
picture as follows:
aDuring still picture, press the MENU button.
bSelect the line ’PLAY FUNCTIONS’ withthe menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
cSelect the line ’VERTICAL STABILITY’ withthe menu
buttons P=or P;.
dHold the menu buttons Qor Puntil the picture qual-
ity is at its best.
eConfirm with the OK button.
fTo end, press the MENU button.
Cleaning the video heads
aDuring playback, press the MENU button.
bSelect the line ’PLAY FUNCTIONS’ withthe menu buttons
P=or P;and confirm with the Pbutton.
cSelect the line ’HEAD CLEANING’ with the menu buttons
P=or P;.
dPressthe OK button. ’HEAD CLEANING IN PROGRESS’
appears on the screen.
eWait a few seconds, until the message disappears and
then press the MENU button.

Recording without automatic switch-off
aInsert a cassette.
bUse the P;or P=button to select the programme
number (programme name) from which you wish to
record.
DWhen the function ’Direct record’ is switched on, select
the programme number on the TV set. With the video
recorderswitched on, press the RECORD/OTRnbutton.
DWhen a TV channel transmits a channel name, it will
show in the display.
DProgramme numbers ’E1’ and ’E2’ are provided for
recording from external sources (via scart sockets
AV1EXT1 and AV2 EXT2 ). Programme number ’E3’ is pro-
vided for recording from the front sockets VIDEO and
L-AUDIO-R .
DProgramme number ’AUX’ is provided for audio record-
ings via sockets AUX IN L R .
cPressthe RECORD/OTRnbutton.
dStop recording with the STOP hbutton.
Recording with automatic switch-off
(OTR One-Touch-Recording)
aInsert a cassette.
bUse the P;or P=button to select the programme
number (programme name) from which you wish to
record.
cPressthe RECORD/OTRnbutton.
dPressthe RECORD/OTRnbutton repeatedlyto obtain the
required end time or length of the recording.
DTo cancel this entry, press the CLEAR(CL) button.
Erase protection
So that you don’t accidentally delete an important recording,
remove the special tab (erase protection)on the narrow side
of the cassette with a screwdriveror slide the special tab to
the left. Later, if you no longer want the cassette to be erase
protected, you can seal the gap again with adhesive tape or
slide the special tab to the right.
Auto-assembling
You can use the auto-assembling function to join individual
recordings without any major picture disturbance between the
recordings.
aDuring playback, search for the correct position on the
tape.
bStop playback by pressing the STOP hbutton. ’PAUSE’
appears on the TV screen.
cNow start recording as usual by pressing the
RECORD/OTRnbutton.
Selecting the recording speed (SP/LP)
You can reduce the recording speed by half. This makes it
possible to record, for example, 8 hours instead of 4 hours on
an ’E240’ (4 hour) cassette.
aSwitch on the TV set. If required, select the programme
number for the video recorder.
bPressthe MENU button. The main menu appears.
cSelect the line ’RECORD FUNCTIONS’ with the menu
buttons P=or P;, and confirm with the Pbutton.
dSelect the line ’RECORD SETTINGS’ with the menu
buttons P=or P;, and confirm with the Pbutton.
eSelect the line ’RECORD SPEED’ with the menu buttons
P=or P;.
fSelect the required recording speed with the menu
buttons Qor P.
D’LP’:Long Play = half recording speed (double recording
time).
’SP’:Standard Play = normal recording speed.
DThe picture quality will be adversely affected when
recording at half recording speed (’LP’).

Automatic recording from a satellite

You can only use this function, when you have a satellite
receiver, which can control other equipment by a ’program-

The video recorder needs the following information for every
programmedrecording:
* the date on which the recording is to be made
* the programme number for the TV channel
* the start and stop time of the recording
* VPS/PDC on or off
* the recording speed (SP/LP)
The video recorder stores all the information mentioned above
in a TIMER block. You can programmeup to 6 TIMERblocks,
one month in advance.
’VPS’ (Video Programming System)/
’PDC’ (Programme Delivery Control)
With ’VPS/PDC’, the TV station controlsthe beginning and the
length of the programmed recording. This means that the
video recorder switches itself on and off at the right time even
if a TV programme you have programmed begins earlier or
finishes later than expected.
Usually the start time isthe same as the VPS/PDC time.If,
however, in the TV guide, in addition to a TV programme’s start
time, a different VPS/PDC time is given, e.g.: ’20.15 (VPS 20.14)’,
you must enter ’20.14’ as the starttime exactly to the minute.
If you want to enter a time that differs from the VPS/PDC time,
you must switch off ’VPS/PDC’.
DWith most TV stations the VPS/PDC time is always the
same as the start time.
Programming with ’VIDEO Plus+’
All the information required for a programming is contained
encoded in the PlusCode programming number.

You can select the required sound track. This is of particular

select from the four possibilities displayed (’STEREO’,
’RIGHT’,’LEFT’,’MONO’).
DDuring playback you can selecta fifthpossibility:the
’MIXED’ mode. In this mode you can playback the mono
sound of the normal (linear) audio track together with the
sound of the stereo audio track.
DIf there is no stereo sound recorded on the cassette, the
video recorder automatically switches to mono sound.
Synchronous editing (synchro-edit)
You can synchronously copy betweenthisvideo recorderand
an appropriately equiped camera recorder. Both units are
started at the same time with the help of a synchronous
impulse and an adjustable startdelay (=preroll time).

When the beginning of the recording is missing, the ’preroll
time’ was too long. Select a shorter ’preroll time’.
If recording started too early, the ’prerolltime’ was too short.
Select a longer ’preroll time’.You can select a ’preroll time’
between 1:00 and 5:00 seconds.
