WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS
WARNING - HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTS SYMBOL
This product is not specically designed for use in hazardous environments, for example in explosive
atmospheres. If the product is to be used in hazardous environments we recommend that the user
ensures suitable protective measures are taken.
!
WARNING - DANGER OF ELECTRIC SHOCK SYMBOL
This module may contain hazardous voltages. Before removing the module from the rack remove all
supplies and disconnect user I/O signals.
Unused slots in the host chassis are populated with blanking plates to prevent access to user I/O
signals that may be present. Blanking panels are available to order from Pickering in a variety of
slot widths. If the product is not used in this manner for example by using an extender card then
additional care must be taken to avoid contact with exposed signals.
Not to be used in safety critical circuits, refer to the Pickering Interfaces’ terms & conditions of sale.
This module must not be used for the switching of Mains Circuits. For the switching of voltages up
to the module’s full specication, Secondary Circuit power supplies and the Device Under Test must
be fully isolated from the Mains Circuit and the safety earth.
The host chassis must be correctly installed and be connected to mains or factory safety ground,
please refer to your chassis installation manual.
Diagram Showing Separation Between The Mains Circuit and Secondary Circuit / DUT
For the purposes of this document, a Mains Circuit is an installation classied as Overvoltage
Category II up to 300V. Separation between the Secondary Circuit and Mains Circuit is achieved
by a transformer in which the primary windings are separated from the secondary windings by
reinforced insulation, double insulation, or a screen connected to the protective conductor terminal.
CAUTION - HANDLING OF ELECTROSTATIC-SENSITIVE DEVICES SYMBOL
Certain semiconductor devices used in this equipment are liable to damage due to static voltage.
Observe the following precautions when handling these devices in their unterminated state, or
sub-assemblies containing these devices:
1. Persons removing sub-assemblies from equipment using these devices must be earthed by a
wrist strap and a resistor at the point provided on the equipment.
2. Soldering irons used during the repair operations must be low voltage types with earthed tips and
isolated from the mains voltage by a double insulated transformer.
3. Outer clothing worn must be unable to generate static charges.
4. Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) tted with these devices must be stored and transported in
anti-static bags.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
All cleaning and servicing requires the equipment to be isolated and disconnected from the power source and user I/O
signals (refer to the Maintenance Section).
• Appropriate manual handling procedures should be followed as dictated by the weight of the individual module or
the combined weight of the modules & chassis.
• Should a fault occur with the module or chassis, immediately isolate and disconnect the incoming power to the
chassis and the user I/O signals.
• Ensure the equipment is installed, operated and maintained by trained and authorised personnel.
• For suitably equipped products in the event of an emergency press the red “emergency stop” button situated on
the front of the unit.

The 40-228 provides 32 channels of digital input and 32 channels
of digital output, together with switched +12V, +5V, +3.3V and
-12V supply outputs derived from the PXI backplane. The module
is available tted with a DC-DC converter (40-228-001) which
provides an additional -5V supply output. Alternatively the module
can be supplied with an industry standard footprint for a DC-DC
converter (40-228-002) allowing the user to t one of their own
specication if required.
The 40-228 includes a breadboard area that allows users to add
their own circuitry to the module.
Writing and reading can be done at bit, byte or word level to
simplify programming effort. Applications include generating control
signals, stimulus and sensing status from digital devices.
The switched power supply outputs on the 40-228-001 are
controlled using a single externally applied signal to the front panel
connector, providing a simple means of controlling the supplies,
while also providing a safety interlock - if the front panel connection
is removed the supplies shut down.
Typical Applications
• Construction of Special One-Off Circuits
• Programmable Ampliers
• Programmable Attenuators
• Filters
• Special Circuits to Drive External Relays
• Mounting Special Relay Types
• Dummy Multiplexer Channels for Calibration Purposes

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION - 40-228-001
A functional block diagram for the 40-228-001 Digital I/O Module is provided in Figure 2.1. The module is powered by
+12V, -12V, +5V, +3.3V supplies from the PXI backplane via the compact PCI connector. A DC-DC converter driven
from the +12V rail provides a -5V supply. All power rails are protected by fuses and are routed to wiring points via
power switching relays, +3.3V, +5V and -5V are also routed to the 50-pin D-type connector on the front panel. The
power switching relays for +3.3V, +5V and -5V are switched simultaneously and controlled by a 3.3V signal applied
externally via the front panel connector.
The module provides 32 TTL digital inputs which are available to the user via wiring points on the circuit board. The
rst eight of these inputs are also routed to the 50-pin D-type front panel connector. Also provided are 32 digital
outputs available as TTL level signals, high current open-collector outputs or low voltage TTL signals. These are
available to the user via 3 separate sets of 32 wiring points. The rst 24 low voltage TTL outputs are also routed to
the front panel connector.
Two uncommitted DPDT electro-mechanical relays are also provided. The contacts and coil connections for these
relays are available to the user via wiring points.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION - 40-228-002
A functional block diagram for the 40-228-002 Digital I/O Module is provided in Figure 2.2. The module is functionally
similar to the 40-228-001 with the following differences:
The DC-DC converter is not tted but an industry standard footprint is provided for the user. The supply voltage for
a user tted DC-DC converter can be linked to +3.3V, +5V or +12V switched or unswitched supplies.
The power switching relays can be used to control any of the power rails as required. The control signal for the relays
is available via a wiring point (ganged operation) or individual wiring points (independent operation).
The pins of the front panel 50-pin- D-type connector have no signals or power rails assigned to them. Connection is
made by the user via a bank of 50 wiring points.
