Don’t want to miss your favourite TV programme when you go out, but don’t want to
keep it for a long time either? Pioneer has the answer. The new DVR 5100H S DVD
recorder has a built in 80 GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). That means that you can record
directly onto the Hard Disk Drive, watch what you have recorded and, if you want to
keep it, you can archive it for storage on a DVD R or DVD RW disc. If not, you can simply
overwrite the recording on the Hard Disk Drive with something else, perhaps with the
following episode. It is the most flexible solution for today’s fast paced lifestyle.
An amazing recording capacity.
DVR-5100H-S
You won’t run out of recording time with the DVR 5100H S DVD recorder. Using the EP
recording mode, the Hard Disk Drive alone has an amazing recording capacity of
102 hours. You can select one of the four recording modes, ranging from lower to
highest quality (EP, LP, SP, FINE). Of course, the recording time varies depending on the
quality level. There’s also a manual mode that gives you very fine control over the
recording quality, with 32 levels to choose from.
Fastest case: 1 hour EP quality content is high-speed copied to a x DVD-R disc in 2.5 minutes! In
other words: at 2 x speed compared to the actual programme duration of 1 hour!!!
Note: Additional time will be required, e.g. to create management information.

Programmes recorded onto the Hard Disk Drive can be fast copied — extremely fast! —
to DVD R and DVD RW discs. And your final recording on the DVD R/DVD RW disc will
be of identical quality as the original recording for you to delight in, time and time
again.
A one hour programme recorded in EP recording mode takes only about 2.5 minutes to
transfer to a DVD R disc (‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’)! For DVD RW discs, you have
the option to copy in ‘VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode)’ or ‘Video Mode (DVD
Video Mode)’, so you have full control over your desired picture quality. The copying
speed varies depending on the recording mode (EP, LP, SP, FINE) and the media. With a
4x DVD R disc, the copying speed compared to the real time length of a recording in
‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’ ranges from 4x to 24x speed, while a 2x DVD RW disc
covers 2x to 12x.
Suppose a recording made on the HDD is too big — such as those made in highest
quality FINE mode — to fit on the disc? Now it’s possible to re encode the original HDD
recording in a lower recording mode while making a copy to a DVD disc in real time.
And you can watch what you have recorded on many sorts of DVD players, from in car
systems and portable computers to portable DVD players*. Pleasure on the move.
Furthermore, high speed copying from DVD RW discs in ‘VR Mode (DVD Video
Recording Mode)’ to the built in Hard Disk Drive is also possible.

With a whole range of copying modes available via the DVR 5100H S, you can decide to
keep anything you want, whenever you want.
• Copying is easier than ever with ‘One-touch
Copy’.
Now you can decide in a split second to copy a Hard Disk
Drive recording — while you are watching it — directly
to a DVD R/DVD RW disc. Just push the ‘One touch
Copy’ button on your remote control and the entire
programme is copied at high speed onto a disc from
beginning to end.
• Copy multiple recorded programmes all at
once with the easy-to-use ‘Copy List’
function.
You can make copies of multiple recorded titles with the
help of the GUI (Graphical User Interface) and the easy
to use Copy List function. Simply add one or more titles
to your Copy List and you’re set to record them all at
once onto a DVD R/DVD RW disc. If needed, you can
edit the titles in the Copy List before making a copy.
• Preserve your favourite discs with the ‘Disc ackup’ feature.
Suppose you want to share a recording you’ve made with friends or family, such as
recent vacation footage or photos, or a favourite television programme? Or perhaps you
prefer to keep a backup copy of prized discs. The DVD Disc Backup feature gives you a
convenient way to copy your recorded material from one DVD R/DVD RW disc to
another recordable DVD disc. First copy the material from the DVD R/DVD RW disc to
the Hard Disk Drive, then on to a second DVD R/DVD RW disc. You can be assured that
the quality and content of the backup disc is exactly the same as the original
DVD R/DVD RW disc. As the DVD recorder guides you through the entire process with
on screen displays, it couldn’t be easier. However, during a DVD Disc Backup, you can
still record another TV show to the Hard Disk Drive or play back other content from the
Hard Disk Drive.

Total viewing flexibility with simultaneous

Just because you’re watching a movie you’ve recently recorded, doesn’t mean your
recording function is out of commission. With Pioneer’s new DVD recorders — when
using DVD- W discs (and recording in ‘V Mode (DVD Video ecording Mode)’) —, you
can watch a previously recorded programme while recording new programme material.
You can record material on the DV -5100H-S’s internal Hard Disk Drive at the same
time that you are watching another programme recorded earlier on the Hard Disk
Drive (or also on a DVD- /DVD- W disc). Similarly, you can record onto a
DVD- /DVD- W disc while simultaneously watching a previously made recording
on the Hard Disk Drive.
View programmes — from any point
— as they record.

Never again will you miss out on the vital five minutes of a film because the doorbell
rings or somebody telephones you just at a crucial point in the story. Chase Play is an
amazing new feature on Pioneer new DVD recorders. If you are interrupted whilst
watching your favourite programme, simply start recording on a DVD- W disc in ‘V
Mode (DVD Video ecording Mode)’ or on the Hard Disk Drive (DV -5100H-S only). You
don’t have to wait until the show is over to see what happened. When you return, you
can start viewing the programme again from precisely the moment you left off. The
DVD recorder will continue recording the rest of your programme. Likewise, if you are
recording a football match whilst you are out and you happen to get home before it’s
ended, there’s no need to wait until it’s over to start watching. Just sit down, relax and
watch right from the beginning while the DVD recorder continues recording the rest of
the match. Using the scan forward function, you can even skip the less interesting
sections, until you have caught up with the live broadcast.
Simultaneous high-speed copying and
recording (multi-tasking .

The DV -5100H-S is like having two recorders in one. That’s good news for a household
that likes to watch different types of broadcasts. With its combination of the high-
storage-capacity Hard Disk Drive and the new ‘Time Shift’ features, it can easily
manage different tasks at the same time. For instance, while making a high-speed copy
from the Hard Disk Drive to a DVD- /DVD- W disc, or while performing a Disc Backup,
you can make a recording of another programme on the Hard Disk Drive. Or you can
simultaneously watch another recording made previously on the Hard Disk Drive. Full
flexibility to meet all your recording demands.

Pioneer DVD recorders.
Instant overview of free recording space.
If you have run out of blank discs, it can take forever to work out which one of
your existing discs might have enough space left to make a new recording. But
not any more. Just press the ‘Disc istory’ button on the remote control, and the
on-screen GUI (Graphical User Interface) provides a complete overview of free
recording space on up to 30 archived discs. So there’s no need to individually
insert the discs into the DVD recorder to check for space. It helps you locate a
particular disc you are looking for. Your DVD recorder has it all stored in memory.
Extremely fast operation response
times.
Operation response time is first rate on Pioneer’s new DVD recorders. They
leap into action at a moments notice. These recorders have been
ingeniously designed by Pioneer engineers so that functions, such as
initialising, playback after power up and recording finalisation are

Improved timer recording function.
With the new user-friendly GUI (Graphical User Interface), you can simply use the remote control that
operates the on-screen cursor to highlight 15 minute time bloc s you wish to record.
GUI ‘Easy timer’ Recording
Two convenient recording modes for disc recording.
Both official DVD Forum recording formats, ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’ and ‘VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode)’ are based on MPEG compression technology for real-time
recording of high-quality images. With the new DVR-5100H-S and DVR-3100-S DVD recorders, it is possible to record from one to six hours of material in either ‘Video Mode (DVD Video
Mode)’ or ‘VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode)’ depending on desired picture quality. The recording quality (compression rate) can be selected using one of four presets for 1 (FINE),
2 (SP), 4 (LP), or 6 (EP) hours of recording. For more exact control over the recording quality, we have also included a manual
mode with 32 different compression rates to choose from.
• ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’
With ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’ recording, you can record from 1 to 6
hours on one DVD-R or DVD-RW. Discs recorded in this mode can be viewed
on many existing DVD-Video playbac systems.
After finalising a DVD-R/DVD-RW disc in ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’,
Pioneer’s new DVD recorders create a menu with selectable thumbnail
images so you can easily access recorded programmes on a compatible
DVD-Video playbac system. You even have a choice of nine different
thumbnail menu bac grounds. The new DVD recorders also let you record
additional material on a finalised DVD-RW disc recorded on a Pioneer DVD
recorder in ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’. Just select ‘Undo Finalize’ and
record more material.
• ‘VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode)’
Using DVD-RW discs, you can record 1 to 6 hours depending on desired picture quality. Pioneer offers no less than 32 different
levels of quality. It’s a stellar combination of variable bit rate recording with the best matching resolution — and additionally
allows for advanced editing. Playbac is on ‘RW Compatible’ players only.
Easy recording from a variety of sources.
With Pioneer DVD recorders, the fun never runs out. Record from a digital camcorder. Transfer your existing videotape to DVD, or record high-quality TV. The new models also feature
PAL/NTSC recording, and the built-in tuner is compatible with the European broadcasting systems. With PAL/NTSC recording, you can record PAL broadcasts in PAL and NTSC in NTSC
onto a DVD disc. With the DVR-5100H-S, it is possible to store both formats simultaneously
on the Hard Dis Drive.
• PDC/VPS/VideoPlus
Pioneer DVD recorders are crammed with features for smooth recording from terrestrial or
cable TV. They record digital broadcasts from a connected set-top box or TV with integrated
digital tuner. Using the VideoPlus number of the VideoPlus® system, the time and channel
settings, recording date, start, and stop are set automatically for recordings using the built-
in tuner. You can programme up to 32 timer recordings up to a month in advance. And to
ma e sure you don’t miss the end of programmes that may run late (a live football match,
for example), you can ta e advantage of the PDC/VPS system for up to 8 of your timer
recordings (only when the corresponding codes are transmitted by the broadcaster).
Note: This DVD recorder features an integrated TV tuner that is capab e of hand ing ana ogue TV broadcasting
signa s via the ‘RF antenna input’ according to the fo owing TV standards: PAL B/G — PAL I — SECAM L. The
specifications of the integrated TV tuner do not restrict the abi ity of this DVD Recorder to accept PAL/SECAM
video via its ‘ana ogue video inputs’ from other sources, such as set-top box TV receivers, or via the digita

All Pioneer DVD recorders automatically scan previously recorded content on an inserted disc and only start recording at
the first available blan location. There’s no way you can overwrite anything accidentally, ma ing your treasured movies
safe forever. And recording has never been easier. One tab on the ‘REC’ button and recording starts. Each touch of the
‘REC’ button equals 30 minutes of recording time (max. 6 hours). For a film that lasts two hours, you simply press the

simplicity itself. Just connect your camcorder to t e DV IN/OUT connector on t e front of
t e DVD recorder. T en use t e remote controller — and Pioneer’s easy-to-use GUI — to
control bot mac ines. You can dub, play back, pause, fast-forward, and rewind. To
restore some of your omemade DVDs to t e camcorder, just plug into t e DV IN/OUT
connector and you’re ready. One DV cable is all you need to input/output A/V data and
control signals. (Some models of camcorders/decks may not be supported. )

Recording Formats and Playback Compatibility:
‘DVD-Video format recording: The use of the DVD-Video format for recording on DVD-R and DVD-RW discs is
referred to as recording in ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode) on Pioneer s DVD recorders. Supporting
playback of DVD-R/DVD-RW discs is optional for manufacturers of DVD playback equipment, and there is
DVD-Video playback equipment that does not play DVD-R or DVD-RW discs recorded in the DVD-Video

‘VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode) format recording: The use of the VR format for recording on

Dolby Digital/DTS compatible amplifier/recei er and a multi-channel A/V surround speaker system and
you’re ready to immerse yourself in the incredible surround sound* and special effects of the latest flicks.
All DVD recorders play back CDs, CD-R, CD-RW, VideoCD and Super Video CD discs — so just load up a disc,
sit back and enjoy.
Additionally, both DVR-5100H-S and DVR-3100-S can handle the latest formats like MP3 and WMA files
recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. They also come equipped with a JPEG PhotoViewer for enjoying
digital camera images.

Note: CD-R/RW DVD-R/RW Playback: Discs ay not be played back because of the following reasons: recording characteristics of
recorder/characteristics of disc/scratch and dust on disc/dust and condensation on pickup lens or others.
CD-R/RW Playback: CD-R/RW discs for Audio recorded in CD Audio, VideoCD or MP3/WMA audio or JPEG for at can be played
back. Unfinalised discs except those in CD Audio for atting cannot be played back.
Note: When playing DTS-encoded (CDs, DVDs), noise is output fro the analogue stereo outputs. To avoid possible da age to the
audio syste , the consu er should take proper precautions when the analogue stereo outputs of the DVD recorder is connected
to an a plification syste . To enjoy DTS Digital SurroundTM playback, an external 5.1-channel DTS Digital SurroundTM decoder
syste ust be connected to the digital audio output of the DVD recorder.
Note: Super Video CD co patibility: Pioneer's new DVD recorders support playback of the IEC’s Super Video Co pact Disc (Super
Video CD) standard (IEC 62107). Co pared to the VideoCD standard, Super Video CD offers superior resolution and picture quality,
and allows two stereo soundtracks on the disc although so e functions, including ti e indication, don’t work.

Finding that exact recording you are looking for has ne er been so simple. With the new Disc Na igator featured on
the new DVD recorders, just select a thumbnail image to see the corresponding title play in the thumbnail frame.
Pre iously, it was sometimes difficult to recognise what was recorded with just the still images. From now on, you
can quickly and easily recognise the programmes you recorded.
* For ‘Video Mode (DVD Video Mode)’ discs, this feature can only be used as long as the disc has not yet been finalised.

When it comes to stunning video, Pioneer shines. Advanced encoder technology is why.
By combining Single-Pass Variable Bit Rate Control with ulti-Resolution, Pioneer DVD
recorders can perform ideal video image compression encoding. The result? Dramatically
improved picture quality. On ‘VR ode (DVD Video Recording ode)’ DVD-RW discs,
multi-resolution technology uses three-quarter and two-third resolution settings, in
addition to full- and half-resolution. This allows for less abrupt changes in quality over
longer recording times.
Pure RGB Video Output.
For absolute top-quality video, Pioneer DVD recorders feature RGB output via
Euro-SCART. RGB video out ensures the purest, high-quality images, without loss of
detail. Depending on your TV set’s capabilities, you’re able to select the best matching
video output quality on the Euro-SCART connector between composite Video, S-Video
and RGB.
Picture Quality Adjustment Features.
With the Video Adjust menu, you can set the picture quality to your taste for the built-in
TV tuner and other external inputs. Changes can be made to brightness and colour noise
reduction, in order to achieve the best possible recorded picture quality. When watching
TV or other external sources, settings can be adjusted to the specific nature of the source.
That means you can even make images from an old videotape look better when you dub
it to a disc. There is a wide selection of pre-defined settings, or use the Video Adjust menu
to create your own customised settings.

compatible, w ic means t at you can record copy-once broadcast programmes but you cannot t en make a copy of t ose recordings. CPRM recordings can only be made on CPRM-compliant DVD-RW discs formatted in “VR Mode (DVD Video Recording Mode)”, and CPRM
