ABOUT THIS MANUAL
This document describes the PLX RDK Port Expansion Kit, from a hardware perspective. It contains a
description of all major functional circuit blocks on the board and also is a reference for the creation of
software for this product. This manual also includes complete schematics and bill of materials.

1. General Information
The RDK Port Expansion Kit is a bench top platform that enables various PLX RDKs to expand four PCI
Express lanes from a card edge connector to four individual connections; thereby, enabling more port
connectivity. One lane (typically the upstream port) is connected to a standard PCI Express x1 cable
connector, while the other three lanes connect to dedicated x16 PCI Express slots.
RDK Port Expansion Kit allows a user to convert their 5-port PEX 8509RDK (x4x1x1x1x1) into an 8-
port/8-lane configuration or fully enable their 5-port/5-lane PEX 8505RDK. The Port expansion Kit is
shipped with the RDK Port Expander (Figure 1-1), PCI Express x1 Cable Adapter (Figure 1-2), and the 1
meter x1 PCI Express cable (Figure 1-3).

1.1 RDK Port Expansion Kit Features
•Provides a 4-lane/4-port breakout for PLX RDKs
•Upstream Connection via standard PCI Express x1cable
•Three downstream PCI Express Slot connectors
•Support for Spread Spectrum Clocking (SSC).
•Standard 0.1” headers to connect up to SM bus
•Manual push-button PERST# capability
•Auxiliary ATX Hard disk connector for supporting additional power requirements for add-in cards

2. RDK Port Expander Assembly Instructions for PEX 8509RDK
1) Uninstall PCI Express Bracket from the PEX 8509RDK (remove two screws).
2) Install five 0.50” nylon stand-offs, using the provided 3/16”, 4-40 screws. Stand-
offs should be mounted on the bottom of the PEX 8509RDK with the screws
screwing in from the top of the board. (Mounting hole locations are highlighted in
blue).
3) Lay the PEX 8509RDK and the RDK Port Expander down on a bench near the
desired test system.
4) Change the PEX 8509RDK’s SW3 (STRAP_PORTCFG[1:0]) DIP switch from 1:
HIGH, 2: HIGH to 1: LOW, 2: LOW.
5) Plug the RDK’s card edge (P1) into the straddle-mount connector of the RDK
Port Expander (J3)
6) Connect one end of x1 PCI Express cable into the RDK Port Expander card, and
the other into the PCI Express x1 cable adapter.
7) Plug in power into the PEX 8509/8505 ATX HD connector (J5) and the RDK Port
Expander ATX HD connector (J2).
8) Plug PCI Express x1 cable adapter card into an unpowered PCI Express PC slot.
9) Apply power the RDK/RDK Port Expander, before applying power to the host PC.
