Important camera features
Thebuilt-in electronicflashlifts up for

Theflashisdesignedtobeusedforevery
picture–outdoorsandindoors.
Thered buttonbothcharges the flashand
takesthe picture.
1. Pressthered button halfwaytocharge
theflash. A red light in theviewfinder
meansthe flash is charging.
Note: Itis not necessarytohold the
camerato your eye while thered
lightis on. In about 5 seconds
theflash is charged, the redlight
goes off and you can take a
picture. Or,you canreleasethe
redbutton andtheflash will stay
chargedfor several minutes.

So Polaroid designed a unique new
photographicsystem (Sun600series
cameras) that makes it possible to take
greatpictures any time – in any light.
Underthe direction of a tinyelectronic
computer,the system – a camera with a
built-inelectronic flash and Polaroid 600
film –measures light withjusttheright
amountof flash to create an ideal
photographiclight for takingbeautiful
pictures–outdoorsandindoors.
Inaddition, the Model 660 AutoFocus
camerahas an automatic focusing system
whichconsists of a fixed frontlensandan
internalrotating disk with four lenses. Using
soundwaves to measure the distance
betweenthe cameralensand your subject,
thecomputer selects thecorrectlens that will
putyoursubjectin sharpfocus.
Forthe firsttime,the high-energy batterybuilt
intoevery film pack powers both the camera
andtheelectronicflash, whichmeansyou
neednever purchase otherbatteries.
Polaroid 600 color film – the most
light-sensitiveinstant color film made – was
developedjust for thiscamerasystem.
Other Polaroid films will not fit into or work
withthiscamera.

The Electronic flash
Boththe electronic flash and the camera are
poweredby thehigh-energybattery builtinto
everyfilm pack.
Thebattery supplies allthepower you need
tofire the flash for everypicture-outdoors
andindoors.
Theflash fullychargesin about 5seconds. It
willstay chargedforseveral minutes, allowing
youtotakeaspontaneouspicture (see page
4).
Ared light in the viewfinder indicates when
theflash is charging. The camera willnot
operateuntil theflashis fully chargedandthe
redlightgoesoff. Sinceyou cannot take a
picturewhile theflashis charging, younever
wastefilm.
The Film
Polaroid 600 color film was developed
specificallyfor your camerasystem. Other
Polaroidfilmswillnotfitinto or work with this
camera. Each film pack provides 10 color
pictures.
Thisnew film isthemostlight-sensitive
instantcolor film made. It is one of the
world’sfastestdeveloping color film. Injust
seconds, the image begins to appear.
Fixed focus lens
Standat least 4feetfromyour subject. In the
picture,everything beyond 4feetwillbe in
focus.
Electronic flash range
Besure to use the flash for everypicture–
outdoors and indoors.
Sun 600
Forbest results indoors,yoursubject
shouldbefrom 4 to 10 feetaway andnear
alight colored background.
Sun 660 AF
Forbest results indoors,yoursubject
shouldbefrom 2 to 14 feetaway andnear
alight colored background.

Split-second focusing (Sun 660 AF only)
Whenyou take a picture, yourcamerasends
soundwaves, at frequenciesbeyondour
rangeof hearing, to the central part ofthe
scene(approximateareacircledinwhite).
Atthe same time, an internal disk with four
lenses(behind the fixedfrontlens)starts to
turn.
Ina split second, a tinyelectroniccomputer
measuresthetimeittakesfor the sound to
reachyour subjectandthe echo toreturn,and
calculatesthe distance between the camera
lensandyoursubject. The lensthenwill put
yoursubject into sharpfocusatthat distance
andlockintoplace.
Lighten/darken control
Usethiscontrolonlywhenyouwantto
reshoota picture to make it lighteror darker.
To take a lighter picture,slide the control
pastthe white arrow.
Autofocus by-pass and non-flash
buttons
Sun 640 - To avoid a flash reflection
whenphotographingthroughglass in
daylightpressthenon-flash buttonto
takeyour picture.
Sun 660 AF - To photograph a daylight
scene(morethan12 ft./3maway)through
glass,press and hold in theautofocus
by-passbutton,then pressthe non-flash
buttonto takeyourpicture.
To take a darker picture, slide the control
pastthe black arrow.
Return the control to center position when
youhave finished reshooting. Awhitedouble
arrowappears in the bottom of the viewfinder
asa reminder that the control is not in its center
position.

Using the camera
Loading the camera
UseonlyPolaroid600colorfilm.
1. Pushthelatchforward. The film doorwill
open.
2. Holdthe film pack by itsedges only, as
shown(printedsideup),andslideitallthe
wayinto the camera.
3. Closethefilmdoor.
Whenyou close thefilmdoor:
•filmcover will eject.
•picturecounter will set to 10.
Removing empty film pack from camera
Whenthe picture counterisblank,open the film
doorandpullthecoloredtabtoremovethefilm
pack.
Raising and lowering the electronic
flash unit
1. Gripthesides of the flash unit.
2. Swingtheflashunituptosnapitinplace.
3. Theflashwillfullycharge,automatically,
inabout3 seconds every time you:
•Loadfilm into the camera whentheflash
unitis raised.
•Raisethe flash unitwhenthere is film
alreadyin the camera.
•Takea picture.
•Touchtheshutterbutton.
Note: The flash is designed to be used
for every picture – outdoors or
indoors.
Whenyouarenot usingthe
camera,lowertheflash unit. Itwill
protectthe lens and lock the red
button.

Holding the camera
1. Gripthecamerasoitrests firmly in the
palmofyourlefthand.
2. Placeyourrightthumbonthethumbrest,
yourindex fingeronthe redbutton,and
curlyourotherfingers intoyour palm.
3. Or, ifit ismore comfortable,place the
fingersof your lefthandover the topofthe
viewfinderandyour thumbunder the
camera– holding your right handas
described above.
Taking the picture
Sun 600
1. Whenyouseethe green ready light,
pressthe shutterbuttonall thewayto
takeapicture.
2. Afteryouhave takenapicture,the
flash willrecharge andthe green
ready light will come on again in
about3seconds.
3. Whenyouwant to take apictureand
thegreen ready light has gone off,
lightlytouchtheshutterbuttonand
release it as soon as the red light
comeson. Then take thepicturewhen
yousee the green ready light.
Sun 660 AF
1. Standatleast 2 feet fromyoursubject.
2. Pressthered buttonuntil you feel
resistance. Holdit there.
