FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
I. GENERAL OPERATION
•Reed,understand,andfollowallinstructionsinthemanual
and onthe machine beforestarting.
•Only allow responsibleadults, who are familiar withthe
instructions,tooperate the machine.
•Clear thearea ofobjects suchas rocks,toys, wire, etc.,
whichcould be pickedup and thrown bythe blade.
•Besure the area isclear ofotherpeople beforemowing.
Stop machine ifanyone enters the area.
•Never carrypassengers.
•Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary.
Always lookdownand behind beforeand whilebacking.
•Beawam ofthe mowerdischargedirectionanddonotpeint
itatanyone. Do notoperate themowerwithouteitherthe
entire grass catcher orthe guard in place.
•Slowdownbeforetuming.
•Never leave a runningmachineunattended. AIwaystum
off blades, set parkingbrake, stop engine, and remove
keys beforedismounting.
•Turn offblades when notmowing.
•Stopengine beforeremovinggrasscatcher orunclogging
chute.
•Mow only indaylightor goodartificiallight.
•Do notoperate the machine whileunderthe influenceof
alcoholordrugs.
•Watch for trafficwhen operating near or crossingroad-
ways.

•Dataindicatesthatoperators,age60yearsandabove,are
involvedin alarge percentage of riding mower-related
injuries.These operatorsshouldevaluate theirabilityto
operatethe dding mower safelyenoughto protectthem-
selvesand othersfrom serious injury.
•Keep machinefree ofgrass, leavesorother debdsbuild-
upwhichcan touchhotexhaust /engine partsand bum.
Do not allow the mower deck to plow leaves
orotherdebriswhichcan cause build-uptooccur. Clean
any oil or fuel spillage before operating or stodng the
machine. Allow machine to cool before
storage.
II. SLOPE OPERATION
Slopesare a major"factorrelatedto loss-of.controland ltpover
accidents,whichcan resultinsevereinjuryor death. Allslopes
requireextracaution.Ifyoucannotbackuptheslopeorifyoufeel
uneasyonit,de notmowit.
DO:
•Mow upand downslopes, not across.
•Remove obstaclessuch as rocks,tree limbs,etc.
•Watch for holes, ruts,or bumps. Uneven terrain could
overturnthe machine. Tallgrass can hideobstacles.
•Use slow speed. Choose a low geer sothat you willnot
have to stopor shiftwhile on the slope.
•Followthe manufacturer's recommendationsfor wheel
weightsorcounterweightsto improve stability.
•Useextracare withgrasscatchers or otherattachments.
These can change the stabilityof the machine.
•Keep all movement onthe slopess/owand gradual Do
notmake sudden changes inspeed ordirection.

•Avoidstartingorstoppingonaslope. Iftiresloeetraction,
disengage theblades and proceed slowlystraightdown
the slope.
DO NOT:
•Do not turn on slopesunless necessary,and then,turn
slowlyand gradually downhill,if possible.
•Do not mow near drop-offs,ditches, or embankments.
The mowercouldsuddenlytumoverifawheel isoverthe
edge ofa cliffor ditch, or ifan edge caves in.
•Do notmow on wetgrass. Reduced traction couldcause
sliding.
•Donottrytostabilizethemechinebyputtingyourfooton
thegreund.
•Do notuse grass catcher on steep slopes.
IlL CHILDREN
Tragic accidentscan occurif the operatorisnot alertto the
presence of children. Children are often attracted to the
machineandthemowingactivity.Neverassumethat children
willremainwhere you lastsawthem.
•Keep children out of the mowing area and under the
watchfulcare ofanother responsibleadult.
•Bealert and tum machineoffifchildrenenter thearea.
•Beforeandwhen bacldng,lookbehindanddownforsmall
children.
•Never carry children. They may fall offand be seriously
injuredorinterferewith safe machineoperation.
•Never allowchildrento operatethe machine.
•Useextracare when approachingblindcomers, shrubs,
trees, or otherobjectsthat may obscurevision.
IV. SERVICE
•Useextracarein handlinggasolineandotherfuels. They
are flammable and vaporsare explosive.
- Use onlyanapprovedcontainer.
- Never remove gas cap or add fuel with the engine
running. Allowengine tocoolbeforerefueling. Do not
smoke.
- Never refuelthe machine indcors.
- Never storethe machine orfuelcontainer insidewhere
there isan open flame, such as a water heater.
•Never runa machine insideaclosed area.
•Keep nutsand bolts,especially bladeattachment bolts,
tightand keep equipmentingoodcondition.
•Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper
operationregularly.
•Keep machinefree ofgrass,leaves,orotherdebrisbuild-
up.Cleanoilorfuel spillage.Allowmachine tocoolbefore
stodng.
•Stop and inspect the equipment if you stdke an object.
Repair, ifnecessary, beforerestarting.
•Never make adjustments or repairs with the engine
running.
•Grass catcher componentsaresubjecttowear, damage,
and detedoration,which couldexpose moving parts or
allowobjectstobethrown. Frequentlycheckcompenents
and replace with manufacturer's recommended parts,
when necessary.
•Mowerbladesaresharpandcancut. Wraptheblade(s)
or wear gloves, and use extra caution when servicing
them.
•Check brake operation frequently. Adjust and service
as required.

SAFETY RULES
:Safe Operation Practices for Ride-On Mowers &
•Be sure the area is clear of other people before mowing.
Stop machine if anyone enters the area.
Never carry passengers or children even with the blades
oft.
•Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary. Al-
ways look down and behind before and while backing.
•Never carry children. They may fail off and be seriously
injured or interfere with safe machine operation.
•Keep children out of the mowing area and under the
watchful care of another responsible adult.
•Be alert and turn machine off if children enter the area.
• Before and when backing, look behind and down for small
children.
•Mow up and down slopes (15 ° Max), not across.
•Remove obstacles such as recks, tree limbs, etc.
Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Uneven terrain could
overturn the machine. Tall grass can hide obstacles.
•Use slowspeed. Choose a low gear so that you willnot have
to stop or shift while on the slope.
•Avoid starting or stopping on a slope. If tires lose traction,
disengage the blades and proceed slowly straight down
the slope.
•Ifmachine stops while going uphill,disengage blades, shift
into reverse and back down slowly.
• Do not turn on slopes unless necessary, and then, turn
slowly and gradually downhill, if possible.

Please read and retain this manual. The instructionswill
enable you toassemble and maintainyourtractor properly.

ties"and =Storage" sections of thisowner's manual.
WARNING: This tractor isequipped with an internalcom-
bustion engine and should not be used on or near any
unimproved forest-covered, brush-covered or grass-cov-
ered land unless the engine's exhaust system isequipped
with a spark arrester meeting applicable localor state laws
(ifany). Ifa spark arrester isused, itshould be maintained
ineffective working order by the operator.
A spark an'ester for the muffler is available through your
nearest authodzed service centre/department (See RE-
PAIR PARTS section of this manual).

ASSEMBLY
Your newtractor has been assembled at thefactory withexception ofthose parts leftunassembled for shipping purposes. To
ensure safe and proper operation ofyour tractorall parts and hardware you assemble must betightened securely. Use the
correct toolsas necessary to insure proper tightness.
TOOLS REQUIRED FOR ASSEMBLY
A socket wrench set will make assembly easier. Standard
wrench sizes are listed,
(2) 7/16" wrenches Utility knife
(1) 3/4" wrenches Tire pressure gauge
Pliers
When right or left hand ismentioned in this manual, itmeans
when you are in the operating position (seated behind the
steering wheel).
TO REMOVE TRACTOR FROM CAR-
TON
UNPACK CARTON
•Remove all accessible loose parts and parts cartons
from carton.
• Cut, from top to bottom, along lines on all four comers
of carton, and lay panels flat.
• Check for any additional loose parts or cartons and
remove.
BEFORE REMOVING TRACTOR FROM
SKID
A'rrACH STEERING WHEEL (See Fig. 1)
ASSEMBLE EXTENSION SHAFT AND BOOT
•Slide extension shaft onto lower steering shaft. Align mount-
ing holes in extension and lower shafts and install
1/4 hex bolt and Iocknut. Tighten securely.
IMPORTANT: TIGHTEN BOLT AND NUT SECURELY TO
10-12 FT. LBS TORQUE.
Place tabs of-steering boot over tab slots in dash and push
down to secure.
INSTALL STEERING WHEEL
Position front wheels of the tractor so they are pointing
straight forward.
Remove steering wheel adapter from steering wheel and
slide adapter onto steedng shaft extension.
Position steering wheel so cross bars are horizontal (left to
right) and slideinside boot and onto adapter.
•Assemble large flat washer, 1/2 hex nutand tighten securely.
Snap steering wheel insert into center of steering wheel.
•Remove protective materials from tractor hood and grill.
IMPORTANT: CHECK FOR AND REMOVE ANY STAPLES
IN SKID THAT MAY PUNCTURE TIRES WHERE TRACTOR
IS TO ROLL OFF SKID.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR TRACTOR
CHECK BA'I-rERY (See Fig. 2)
•Liftseat pan to raised position.
•If this battery is put into service after month and year
indicated on label (label located between terminals)
charge battery for minimum of one hour at 6-10 amps.

sectionof this manual for charging instructions).

ASSEMBLY
INSTALL SEAT (See Fig. 3)
Adjust seat before tighteningadjustment knob.
Remove adjustment knoband flatwasher secudng seat
tocardboard pecking and set aside for assembly ofseat
to tractor.
•Pivot seat upward and remove from the cardboard
packing. Remove the cardboard packing and discard.
•Place seat on seat pan so head of shoulder bolt is
positioned over large slotted holein pan.
•Push down on seat to engage shoulder boltin slotand
pull seat towards rear of tractor.
•Pivot seat and pan forward and assemble adjustment
knob and fiat washer loosely. Do not tighten.
•Lower seat intooperating positionand siton seat.
•Slide seat untila comfortable position isreached which
allowsyoutopress clutch/brake pedal alltheway down.
•Get off seat without moving itsadjusted position.
•Raise seat and tighten adjustment knob securely.

•Press liftlever plunger and raise attachment liftleverto
its highest position.
•Release parkingbrake bydepressingclutch/brakepedal.
•Place gearshift lever in neutral (N) position.
•Roll tractorforward off skid.
•Remove banding holding deflector shield up against
tractor.
TO DRIVE TRACTOR OFF SKID (See Opera-
tion section, page 10, for location and func-
tion of controls)
AWARNING: Before starting, read, understandand follow
all instructionsin the Operation section ofthis manual. Be
sure tractoris in a well-ventilated area. Be sure the area in
frontof tractor isclear of other people and objects.
•Be sure all the above assembly steps have been
completed.
•Check engine oil level and fillfuel tank with gasoline.
•Sit on seat in operating position, depress clutch/brake
pedal and set the parking brake.
•Place gear shift lever in neutral (N) position.
•Press liftlever plunger and raise attachment liftleverto
its highest position.
•Starttheengine. After engine has started,movethrottle
controlto idle position.
•Depress clutch/brake pedal intofull "BRAKE" position
and hold. Move gearshift lever to 1st gear.
• Slowly release clutch/brake pedal and slowly ddve
tractor off skid.
• Apply brake to stop tractor, set parking brake and place
gearshift lever in neutral position.
• Turn ignition key to =OFF_ position.

NOTE: You may now rollor drive your tractor off the skid.
Follow the appropdate instruction below to remove the
tractor from the skid.

ASSEMBLY
CHECK TIRE PRESSURE
IMPORTANT: FOR SHIPPING PURPOSES, THE
MULCHER PLATE WAS PREATTACHED TO YOUR
MOWER. THE MULCHER PLATE MUST ONLY BE USED
WITH THE MULCHING BLADES THAT CAME PACKED
SEPARATELY IN THE CARTON.
YOUR MOWER CAME FACTORY EQUIPPED WITH HIGH
PERFORMANCE BLADES, WHICH ARE THE BEST
BLADES FOR BAGGING AND DISCHARGING. TO USE
YOUR MOWER WITH THE HIGH PERFORMANCE BLADES
THE MULCHER PLATE MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE
MOWER (SEE FIG. 4).
TO SET UP YOUR MOWER FOR MULCHING
•Remove high performance blades and install mulcher
blades, (see BLADE REMOVAL in the CUSTOMER
RESPONSABILITY section of this manual).
TO INSTALL MULCHER PLATE (See Fig. 4)
NOTE: If you installed the mulching blades you will need to
install the mulcher plate.
• Raise and hold deflector shield in updght position.
• Place front of mulcher plate over front of mower deck
opening and slide into place, as shown.
• Hook front latch into hole on front of mower deck.
• Hook rear latch intohole on back of mower deck.
ICAUTION: Do not remove deflector shield I
from mower. Raise and hold shield when
attaching mulcher plate and allow itto
rest on plate while in operation.

TO CONVERT TO BAGGING OR DISCHARG-

NOTE: The mulcherblades willdischarge and bag grass, but
for bestbaggingand discharginginstallthehighperformance
blades.
•Remove mulcher plate and mulcher blades and install
highperformanceblades, (see BLADE REMOVAL inthe
CUSTOMER RESPONSABILITYsecUon ofthismanual).
•Store mulcherblades and mulcher plate ina safe place.
Your mower isnow ready for discharging or installation
of optional grass catcher accessory.
The tires on yourtractor were ovednflated at the factory for
shipping purposes. Correct tire pressure is important for
best cutting performance.
•Reduce tire pressure to PSI shown in "PRODUCT
SPECIFICATIONS" sectionof this manual.
CHECK DECK LEVELNESS
For best cutting results, mower housing should be propedy
leveled. See"TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING" intheService
and Adjustments section of this manual.
CHECK FOR PROPER POSITION OF ALL
BELTS
See the figures that are shown for replacing motion and
mower blade drive belts in the Service and Adjustments
section of this manual. Verify that the belts are routed
correctly.
CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM
Afteryou learn howto operate your tractor,checkto see that
the brake is properly adjusted. See "TO ADJUST BRAKE"
in the Sewice and Adjustments section of this manual.

properly around pulleys and insideall belt keepers.
,/ Check wiring. See that allconnections are stillsecure
and wires are properlyclamped.
WHILE LEARNING HOW TO USE YOUR TRACTOR, PAY

ATrACHMENT CLUTCH LEVER: Used to engage the
mower blades, orotherattachments mountedtoyourtractor.
LIGHT SWITCH POSITION: Turns the headlights on and
off.
THROI"FLFJCHOKE CONTROL: Used for starting and
controllingengine speed.
CLUTCH/BRAKE PEDAL: Used for declutchingand brak-
ingthe tractor and starting the engine.
PARKING BRAKE: Locksclutch/brake pedal intothebrake
position.
HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT KNOB -Used toadjustthe mower
cutting height.
GEARSHIFT LEVER - Selects the speed and direction of
the tractor.
A'FrACHMENT LIFT LEVER: Used to raise, lower, and
adjustthe mowerdeckorotherattachments mountedtoyour
tractor.
LIFT LEVER PLUNGER: Used to release attachment lift
lever when changing itsposition.
IGNITION SWITCH: Used for starting and stopping the
engine.
AMMETER -Indicates charging (+) or discharging (-) of
battery.

OPERATION
IThe operation ofany tractor can result in foreign objects thrown into the eyes, which can
result in severe eye damage. Always wear safety glasses or eye shields while operating
your tractor or performing any adjustments or repairs. We recommend a wide vision
safety mask over spectacles or standard safety glasses.
HOW TO USE YOUR TRACTOR
TO SET PARKING BRAKE (See Fig. 6)
Your tractorisequipped with anoperator presence sensing
switch. When engine isrunning,any attempt bythe operator
to leave the seat without first setting the parking brake will
shut offthe engine.
•Depress clutch/brake pedal intofull "BRAKE" position
and hold.
•Place parking brake lever in"ENGAGED" positionand
release pressurefrom clutch/brake pedal. Pedalshould
remain in"BRAKE" position. Make sure parking brake
will holdtractor secure.

• Start tractor with clutch/brake pedal depressed and

• Move gearshift lever to desired position.

IMPORTANT: BRING TRACTOR TO A COMPLETE STOP
BEFORE SHIFTING OR CHANGING GEARS. FAILURE TO

TO ADJUST MOWER CU'I-FING HEIGHT (See

The cuttingheight iscontrolledbytuming the heightadjust-

•Turn knob clockwise (F'_) to raise cutting height.
•Turn knob counterclockwise (P_) to lower cutting
height.
The cutting height range isapproximately 1-1/2" to4". The
heights are measu red from the groundtothe blade tipwith
theengine notrunning. These heightsareapproximate and
may vary depending upon soil conditions, height of grass
and types of grass being mowed.
The average lawnshouldbecuttoapproximately 2-1/2
inches during the cool season and to over 3 inches
during hot months. For healthier and better looking
lawns, mow often and after moderate growth.
•For best cutting performance, gr_tssover 6 inches in
height should be mowed twice. Make the first cut
relatively high; the second to desired height.

"ENGAGED" POSITION
TO ADJUST GAUGE WHEELS (See Fig. 7)
Gauge wheels are propedy adjusted when they areslightly
offthegroundwhen mower isatthedesired cuttingheightin
operating position. Gauge wheels then keep the deck in
proper position to help prevent scalping in most terrain
conditions.
NOTE:Adjust gauge wheels with tractor on a flat level
surface.
•Adjust mower to desired cutting height (See =TOAD-
JUST MOWER CUTTING HEIGHT" in the Operation
section of this manual).
•With mower in desired height of cut position, gauge
wheels shouldbe assembled so theyare slightlyoffthe
ground. Install gauge wheel in appropriate hole with
shoulder bolt,3/8 washer, and3/8-16 Iocknutandtighten
securely.
•Repeat for oppositeside installinggauge wheel insame
adjustment hole.

TOWING CARTS AND OTHER ATTACH-
MENTS
Tow only the attachments that are recommended by and
comply with specifications of the manufacturer of your
tractor. Use common sense when towing. Too heavy of a
load, while ona slope, isdangerous. Tires can lose traction
withthegroundand cause youtolosecontrolofyourtractor.

OPERATION
BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL
•The engine in yourtractor has been shipped, from the
factory, already filled with summer weight oil.
•Check engine oilwith tractoron level ground.
•Remove oilfillcap/dipstick and wipe clean, reinsert the
dipstick and screw cap tight, wait for a few seconds,
remove and read oil level. If necessary, add oil until
"FULL" markon dipstick is reached. Do not overfill.
•For cold weather operation you should change oil for
easier starting (See "OIL VISCOSITY CHART" in the
Customer Responsibilities section of this manual).
•To changeengine oil,see theCustomer Responsibilities
section inthis manual.
ADD GASOLINE
•Fill fuel tank. Use fresh, clean, regular unleaded
gasoline witha minimum of87 octane. (Use of leaded
gasoline will increase carbon and lead oxide deposits
and reduce valve life). Do not mix oil with gasoline.
Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used within30
days to assure fuel freshness.
IMPORTANT: WHEN OPERATING IN TEMPERATURES
BELOW 32°F(0°C), USE FRESH, CLEAN WINTER GRADE
GASOLINE TO HELP INSURE GOOD COLD WEATHER
STARTING.
WARNING: Experience indicatesthatalcoholblendedfuels
(called gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract
moisture which leads to separation and formation of acids
during storage. Acidic gas can damage thefuel system of
an engine whilein storage. To avoid engine problems, the
fuel system shouldbe emptied before storage of30 daysor
longer. Drain thegastank, startthe engineand let itrununtil
the fuel linesand carburetor areempty. Usefresh fuel next
season. See Storage Instructionsforadditionalinformation.
Never useengine orcarburetor cleaner productsinthe fuel
tank or permanent damage may occur.

TO START ENGINE (See Fig. 6)
When startingtheengine forthe firsttimeorifthe engine has
run out of fuel, itwilltake extra cranking time to move fuel
from the tank to the engine.
•Sit on seat inoperating position, depress clutch/brake
pedal and set parking brake.
•Place gear shift lever in neutral (N) position.
•Move attachment clutchto "DISENGAGED" position.
•Move throttle control to choke (l',J) position.
NOTE: Before starting, read the warm and cold starting
procedures below.
Insert key into ignition and turn key clockwise to
"START" position and release key as soon as engine
starts. Do not run starter continuously for more than
fifteen seconds per minute. Ifthe engine does netstart
after several attempts, move throttle control to fast
position,wait afew minutes and tryagain, if engine stiU
does not start, move the throttle control back to the
choke (N) positionand retry.
WARM WEATHER STARTING (50° F and above)
•When engine starts, movethe throttlecontrol tothe fast
position.
•The attachments and ground drive can now beused. If
theengine does not accept the load, restart theengine
and allow itto warm upfor one minute usingthechoke
as described above.
COLD WEATHER STARTING (50° F and below)
•When engine starts,allow engine torunwiththethrottle
control in the choke (Jkl)position until the engine runs
roughly,then movethrottlecontroltofast position.This
may require an engine warm-up pedod from several
secondstoseveral minutes,depending onthetempera-
ture.
•The attachments can also be used during the engine
warm-uppedod.
NOTE: If at a high altitude (above 3000 feet) or in cold
temperatures (below 32 F) the carburetor fuel mixturemay
need to be adjusted for bestengine performance. See "TO
ADJUST CARBURETOR" in the Service and Adjustments
section of this manual.

MOWING TIPS MULCHING MOWING TIPS
•Mower should be propedy leveled for best mowing
performance. See "TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING" in
the Service and Adjustments section of this manual.
• The left hand side of mowershould be used fortdmming.
• Drive so that clippings are discharged onto the area that
has been cut. Have the cut area to the right of the
machine. This will result in a more even distribution of
clippingsand more uniform cutting.
•When mowing largeareas, startbyturningtothe rightso
thatclippingswilldischarge away from shrubs,fences,
driveways, etc. After one or two rounds, mow in the
opposite direction making left hand turns untilfinished
(See Fig. 9).
•If grass is extremely tall, itshould be mowed twice to
reduce load and possible fire hazard from dried clip-
pings. Make first cut relatively high;the second to the
desired height.
• Do not mow grass when it iswet. Wet grass will plug
mower and leaveundesirableclumps. AIIowgrasstodry
before mowing.
•Atways operate engine at fuUthrotUe when mowing
to assure better mowing performance and proper dis-
chargeof material. Regulate groundspeed byselecting
alow enough gear to give the mower cutting perfor-
mance as well as the quality ofcut desired.
•When operating attachments, select aground speed
thatwillsuittheterrain and give bestperformance ofthe
attachment being used.
IMPORTANT: FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEPMOWER
HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS AND TRASH.
CLEAN AFTER EACH USE.
•The special mulching blade willrecutthegrassclippings
many times and reduce them insize sothatas they fall
ontothe lawntheywill disperseintothegrassand notbe
noticed. Also, the mulched grass will biodegrade
quickly toprovide nutrientsfor the lawn. Always mulch
with your highest engine (blade) speed as this will
provide the best recuttingactionof the blades.
•Avoid cuttingyour lawnwhen itiswet. Wet grass tends
toform clumps and interfereswiththe mulchingaction.
The best time to mow your lawn istheeerly aftemoon.
At thistime the grass has dded and the newly cut area
will not be exposed to the direct sun.
•Forbest results,adjustthe mowercuttingheightsothat
the mower cuts off only the top one-third ofthe grass
blades (See Fig. 10). For extremely heavy mulching,
reduce yourwidthofcuton each passand mow slowly.
Certain types ofgrass and grassconditionsmay require
that an area be mulched a second time to completely
hide the clippings. When doing a second cut, mow
across or perpendicular to the first cut path.
•Change your cutting pattern from week toweek. Mow
northtosouthone week thenchange toeast towest the
next week. This will helpprevent matting and graining
ofthe lawn.

OPERATOR PRESENCE SYSTEM
Be sure operatorpresence and interlocksystems are work-
ingproperly. Ifyourtractor does notfunction as described,

•The engine should not start unless the clutch/brake
pedal isfully depressed and attachement clutchcontrol
is inthe disengaged position.
•When theengineis running,anyattempt bytheoperator
to leave the seat without first setting the parking brake

BLADE CARE
Forbest resultsmower blades mustbe keptsharp. Replace

BATTERY
Your tractor has a battery charging system which is suffi-
cient for normal use. However, pededic charging of the
battery with an automotive charger will extend its life.
•Keep battery and terminals clean.
•Keep battery bolts tight.
•Keep small vent holes open.
•Recharge at 6-10 amperes for 1 hour.
NOTE: The original equipment battery on your tractor is
maintenance free. Do notattempt toopenorremove caps or
covers. Adding or checking level of electrolyte is not

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES
TO CLEAN BAI-FERY AND TERMINALS
Corrosion and dirt onthe battery and terminals can cause the
battery to "leak" power.
•Disconnect BLACKbatterycable first then RED battery
cable and remove battery from tractor.
• Rinse the battery with plain water and dry.
• Clean terminals and battery cable ends with wire brush
until bright.
• Coat terminals with grease or petroleum jelly.
• Reinstall battery (See "REPLACING BAI-FE RY" in the
Service and Adjustment section of this manual).
V-BELTS
Check V-belts for deterioration andwear after 100 hoursand
replace ifnecessary. The belts are not adjustable. Replace
belts ifthey begin to slipfrom wear.
TRANSAXLE COOLING
Keep transaxle free from build-upofdirtand chaffwhichcan
restdct cooling.
ENGINE
LUBRICATION
Only use high quality detergent oil rated with API service
classification SF-SJ. Select the oil's SAE viscosity grade
according to your expected operating temperature.

NOTE: Although multi-viscosity oils (5W30, 10W30 etc.)
improve starting incold weather, these multi-viscosityoils
will result in increased oil consumption when used above

Change the oilafter every 50 hours of operation or at least

Inspect and replace corroded muffler and spark arrester (if

SPARK PLUGS
Replace spark plugs at the beginning of each mowing
season or after every 1go hours of use, whichever comes
first. Spark plug type and gap setting is shown in "PROD-
UCT SPECIFICATIONS" section of this manual.
ENGINE OIL FILTER
Replace the engine oil filter every season or every other oil
change ifthe tractor isused more than 100 hours in one year.
IN-LINE FUEL FILTER (See Fig. 17)
The fuel filter should be replaced once each season. Iffuel
filter becomes clogged, obstructingfuel flow tocarburetor,
replacement isrequired.
•With engine cool, remove filter and plug fuel linesec-
tions.
•Place new fuel filter in position in fuel line with arrow
pointingtowardscarburetor.
•Be sure there are no fuel line leaks and clamps are
propedypositioned.
•Immediately wipe up any spilled gasoline.

CLEANING
• Clean engine, battery, seat, finish, etc. of all foreign
matter.
•Keep finished surfaces and wheels free of all gasoline,
oil, etc.
•Protect painted surfaces with automotive type wax.
We do not recommend using a garden hose to clean your
tractor unless the electrical system, muffler, air filter and
carburetor are covered to keep water out. Water inengine
can result in a shortened engine life.

CAUTION: BEFORE PERFORMING ANY SERVICE OR ADJUSTMENTS"
iDepress clutch/brake pedal fully and set parking brake.
Place gearshift lever in neutral (N) position.
Place attachment clutch in "DISENGAGED" position.
• Turn ignition key "OFF" and remove key.
•Make sure the blades and all moving parts have completely stopped.
•Disconnect spark plug wire from spark plug and place wire where itcannot come in contact with
plug.
TRACTOR
TO REMOVE MOWER (See Fig. 18)
Mower willbe easier to remove from the right side oftractor.
•Place attachment clutch in =DISENGAGED" position.
• Move attachment lift lever fonNard to lower mower to its
lowest position.
• Roll belt off engine pulley.
• Remove small retainer spring, and lift clutch spring off
pulley bolt.
• Remove large retainerspring, slide collar off and push
housing guide out of bracket.
• Disconnect anti-swaybar from chassis bracket by re-
moving retainerspring.
• Disconnect suspension arms from rear deck brackets
by removing retainer springs.
• Disconnect front links from deck by removing retainer
springs.
•Raise lift lever to raise suspension arms. Slide mower
out from under tractor.
IMPORTANT: IF AN ATTACHMENT OTHER THAN THE
MOWER DECK IS TO BE MOUNTED ON THE TRAC-
TOR, REMOVE THE FRONT LINKS AND HOOK THE
CLUTCH SPRING INTO SQUARE HOLE IN FRAME.
TO INSTALL MOWER (See Fig. 18)
•Raise attachment liftlever to its highest position.
• Slide mower under tractorwith deflector shield to right
side of tractor.
•Lower liftlever to itslowest position.
•Connect front links to mower deck and secure with
retainersprings..
•Connect suspension arms to rear deck brackets and
secure with retainer springs.
•Connect anti-swaybar to chassis bracket and secure
with retainer spring.
•Push clutch cable housing guide into bracket, slide
collar ontoguide and secure with large retainer spring.
•Install belt onto engine pulley.

TO LEVEL MOWER HOUSING
Adjust the mower while tractor isparked on level ground or
driveway. Make sure tirosare propedyinflated(See =PROD-
UCT SPECIFICATIONS" sectionofthismanual). Iftirosare
over or underinflated, you will not properly adjust your
mower.
SIDE-TO-SIDE ADJUSTMENT (See Figs. 19 and 20)
•Raise mower to its highest position.
•At the midpoint ofboth sides ofmower, measure height
from bottom edge of mower toground. Distance"A" on
both sides of mower should be the same or within 1/4"
of each other.
•If adjustment is necessary, make adjustment on one
side of mower only.
•To raise one side of mower, tighten liftlinkadjustment
nut on that side.
•To lower one side of mower, loosen liftlinkadjustment
nut on that side.
NOTE: Each full turn of adjustment nutwillchange mower
height about 1/8".
•Recheck measuroments after adjusting.

FRONT-TO-BACK ADJUSTMENT (See Figs. 21 and 22)
IMPORTANT: DECK MUST BE LEVEL SIDE-TO-SIDE. IF
THE FOLLOWING FRONT-TO-BACK ADJUSTMENT IS
NECESSARY, BE SURE TO ADJUST BOTH FRONT LINKS
EQUALLY SO MOWER WILL STAY LEVEL SIDE-TO-
SIDE.
To obtain the bestcuttingresults,the mower housingshould
be adjusted so that the front isapproximately 1/8" to 112"
Iowerthan the roarwhen the mower is initshighestposition.
Check adjustment on rightside oftractor. Measurodistance
"D" directly infront and behind the mandrel at bottom edge
of mower housing as shown.
•Before making any necessary adjustments, check that
both front links are equal in length.
•If linksare not equal in length, adjust one linkto same
length as other link.
•To lower front ofmower loosen nut=E-onbothfront links
an equal number oftums.
•When distance"D"is 1/8"to1/2" Iowerat front than rear,
tighten nuts "F" against trunnionon bothfront links.
•To raise front ofmower, loosennut"F_from trunnionon
both front links. Tighten nut "E" on both front links an
equal number of turns.
When distance"D" is1/8"to1/2"lowerat front than roar,
tighten nut =F"against trunnion on both front links.
•Recheck side-to-sideadjustment.

The mower blade drivebelt may be replaced without tools.
Park thetractor on level surface. Engage parking brake.
BELT REMOVAL -
•Remove mower from tractor (See "TO REMOVE
MOWER" in this section of this manual).
•Work belt offboth mandrel pulleys and idler pulleys.
•Pull belt away from mower.
BELT INSTALLATION -
•Install new belt in reverse order of removal.
•Make sure belt isinall pulleygrooves and inside all belt
guides.
•Install mower in reverse order ofremoval instructions.
