US and CANADA Radio Interference Note

Two separate graphics capabilities are included in the printer: standard P-Series odd-even
dot Plot Mode graphics and Bit I age graphics. Intelligent graphics capabilities are available
by
using the Printronix Intelligent Graphics P rocessor (IGP) options.
Serial Matrix co patibility extends printer versatility, enabling it to be used with a wide variety
of applications software. Y ou ay select industry standard Printronix P-Series or Serial Matrix
co patibility (si ilar to the IBM Graphic P rinter e ulation) fro the control panel.
The progra able Vertical For at Unit provides rapid paper advance to specified lines for
printing
repetitive and continuous for s. A variety of VFUs are standard in the P9012 to eet

International languages can be selected and downloaded, and custo characters can be
created.

Character Formation
The P9012 printer generates characters by asse bling groups of dots in atrices. Dots overlap
to produce a solid appearing character (Figure 1-1). Dot i pressions are ade by an asse Ć
bly
of 88 ha ers installed on an oscillating shuttle. The ha ers i pact the paper through a
oving ink ribbon. Horizontal shuttle ove ent and vertical paper advance ent co bine for
precise dot printing to for the character.

Line Matrix Printing
Unlike oving-head serial dot atrix printers, the Printronix P9012 printer creates graphics
and
characters by printing an entire dot row at one ti e. Dots are printed in both directions of
shuttle travel at a printer stroke length of .15" to print through 1.5 character positions in 10
pitch
Data P rocessing print ode (Figure 1-2). By printing a row of dots, line atrix printers
achieve higher print duty cycles than oving head dot atrix (serial) printers.
During each sweep of the shuttle, ha ers are activated to print dots at selected positions in
that
dot row. When the shuttle reaches the end of a sweep, it reverses direction, paper advances
one dot row, and the ha ers print the next consecutive row of dots.
After an entire line of characters is printed, ha er print action ceases and the paper adĆ
vances
to the first dot row of the next print line. This creates a series of blank rows between lines
of characters. The nu ber of rows allowed for line separation depends on the line spacing se Ć
lected.

Print Rate
The print rate, in lines per inute (lp ), is a function of the nu ber of dot rows required to
produce the character line regardless of the nu ber of characters in the line. For exa ple,
ore
dot rows are required to print lowercase characters with descenders; consequently, those
characters are printed at a slower rate. T able 1-1 describes the print rate according to type of
character printed and print ode. Co plete printing specifications are provided in the ApĆ
pendix.

Plot Rate
As well as character printing, the P9012 printer is capable of dot-addressable graphic plotting.
Based on the protocol selected, either P-Series Plot Mode or Serial Matrix Bit I age Graph Ć

is used; the plot rate specifications apply to both P-Series and Serial Matrix types of graph Ć

Operation Features
On Line
The P9012 printer functions either on line" or off line." When on line, the printer is capable
of receiving data and control co ands fro the host co puter. The essage display on the
printer
control panel indicates that the printer is on line and shows the current print ode.
Off Line
When the printer is off line, co unication between the printer and the host co puter is te Ć
porarily stopped and the essage OFFLINE READY appears on the display. Set the printer
off

Comman Sets (Protocol Mo es)
The P9012 printer responds to two different co and sets, or protocols: P-Series and Serial
Matrix.
The protocol is selected fro the control panel and ust correspond with the host progra Ć
ing standard to co unicate with the printer. P-Series protocol generates characters and
graphics using Printronix standard P-Series control codes. The Serial Matrix protocol generĆ
ates characters and graphics using Serial Matrix control codes si ilar to the IBM Graphics
Printer.

Character Set Options
Four basic character set choices are selectable fro the control panel: IBM PC, Multinational,
DEC Multinational, and ECMA 94 Latin 1. Within each character set, foreign language sets
are
also selectable. A dditionally, OCR-A and OCR-B character sets are available.

You can also define and download an international language to allow any character within the
character library to be substituted for any code. Si ilarly, an individual character in a font, or
an
entire set of characters, can be created and placed in a font. These downloading features are
discussed in ore detail in the P rogra ing chapter and the Appendix.
Power Switch
The A C power switch is located at the lower left corner of the rear panel of the printer. T o turn
the printer power on, set the power switch to the ON (|) position.

The power cor requires an IEC (hot) connector to mate to the receptacle on the rear
panel of the printer . The hot connector inclu es a polarizing key which prevents the
use of cor sets that are not of the correct rating for the printer .

The Control Panel
The printer control panel is illustrated in Figure 2-1. Each co ponent of the control panel is
discussed on the following pages.
Status Lamps
The status la ps are lit continuously when the printer is on line to the host and are off when the
printer is off line. The la ps flash alternately if a fault condition exists in the printer.
Alphanumeric Message Display
The essage display shows printer status and fault condition essages. During nor al opera Ć
tion,
the display indicates the on line status and the current print ode (and pitch) selection.
