INTERPRETER CONTROL UNIT - MODEL PL ICU 22– INSTRUCTION MANUAL
Congratulations on your purchase of the Interpreter Control Unit PL ICU 22, the new
standard in high-quality, easy-to-use simultaneous interpretation technology!
The Interpreter Control Unit PL ICU 22is designed to allow two interpreters to work
together in the management of audio in a bi-directional interpretation setup.
Two inputs and two outputs combine to allow for the combination of multiple Interpreter
Control Units PL ICU 22, making possible interpretation from one language into an
unlimited number of other languages without the need for additional equipment.
Multiple-language relay (i.e. interpretation not just from one language into many others,
but also back into the original language) is also possible, but does require the use of
additional equipment, such as a basic multi-channel audio mixer.
Interpreters listen to the program (OR – Original) directly from the audio feed or in relay
use from the REL (REL – Relay) input. Interpreters select the language channel output
(ENGLISH or FOREIGN).
Additional functions, such as individual interpreter headset volume control, input
selection (OR or REL), and a cough button are provided for the interpreter.
The audio technician in charge of the installation and maintenance of the unit will find
multiple features and functionalities, allowing full control over the management of all
audio levels for both incoming and outgoing audio for a balanced listening experience
for all.
This commercial level control of all incoming and outgoing audio levels without the need
for additional mixers or amplifiers allows the unit to be connected directly to any audio
processor, such as a language distribution system (not included).
Your Interpreter Control Unit PL ICU 22 will provide many years of reliable operation.
Please read and these instructions PL ICUrefully.

OVERVIEW OF FUNCTIONS – FRONT PANEL
Top View
1. FOREIGN-ENGLISH SWITCH: Selects outgoing channel. Indicator lights indicate
the selection. This switch selects between outputs OUT A and OUT B on the rear
panel: OUT A corresponds to FOREIGN. OUT B corresponds to ENGLISH.
2. OR-REL SWITCHES: Selects listening channel for each interpreter. OR is for the
original program feed and REL is for relay from another Interpreter Control Unit.
3. LEVEL CONTROL KNOBS: Select audio volume level for each interpreter.
4. MIC 1 / MIC 2 BUTTONS: Turns on or off each interpreter’s microphone.
Indicator lights illuminate when each microphone is active. Both microphones can
be in use simultaneously, e.g. when a conversation is interpreted. When both
mics are OFF, and the PASS-THROUGH ON/OFF selector on the rear panel is
ON, the original program feed passes through directly to the transmitter and
receivers.
5. MIC MUTE BUTTON: Mutes both microphones temporarily, only while
depressed. Also known as a “cough button.”

1. 12 VDC: Connection for external power supply.
2. HEADPHONE OUTPUT: Connections for both interpreter headphones. 3.5mm
jacks.
3. MIC IN: Microphone inputs for both interpreter microphones. 3.5mm jacks.
4. REL IN: Connection for relay input in relay mode (additional Interpreter Control
Units and other additional equipment required). XLR female jack.
5. REL GAIN: Controls the volume of the audio of the relay input for both
headphones.
6. OR IN: Connection for original audio source (“floor feed”). XLR female jack.
7. OR GAIN: Controls the volume of the audio of the original audio source for both
headphones.
8. OUT A/B: Outputs to transmitters or to additional Interpreter Control Units. XLR
male jacks. These outputs correspond to the outgoing language selector on the
top: OUT A corresponds to FOREIGN. OUT B corresponds to ENGLISH.
9. PASS-THROUGH ON/OFF: Turn on/off pass-through function for output A or B,
respectively. When ON, original sound source or program feed is passed through
to the transmitter(s) when both interpreter microphones are turned off. When
OFF, original sound does not pass through. In most situations, this function
should be ON so that music, video, etc. will be delivered to the audience when
interpreters are not talking.

STAND-ALONE OPERATION WITH ONE INTERPRETED LANGUAGE
The following instructions describe the first setup steps for using the Interpreter Control
Unit PL ICU 22in the most basic scenario – interpretation from one language (most
often English) into one foreign language. Additional options are described in the
following pages.
1. Plug the cord from the external power supply into the power connector (labeled
12 VDC) on the rear panel of the Interpreter Control Unit and plug the AC cord
into an AC power outlet. A surge protector is recommended for protection of the
equipment. The unit is now turned on, and the indicator lights on the top should
illuminate at this time.
2. Plug one or both interpreter microphone(s) into the MIC IN jack(s) on the rear
panel. The connector is a 3.5mm jack (aka a “mini jack”). Use an adapter if your
microphone does not fit. The unit works best with condenser microphones, but
can handle all types of microphones.
3. Make sure the headphone volume knob(s) are turned all the way down, and then
plug in one or both interpreter headphone(s) into the HEADPHONE OUTPUT
jack(s) on the rear panel. The connector is a 3.5 mm jack (aka a “mini jack”). Use
an adapter if your headphone does not fit.
TIP: HEADHPONE/MICROPHONE COMBINATION HEADSETS (SOLD
SEPARATELY) WORK BEST AND ARE PREFERRED BY MOST INTERPRETERS.
4. Connect your original audio source, i.e. the floor feed, into the OR IN input on the
rear panel. The connector is XLR female. Use an adapter if your sound system or
mixer does not use XLR-style connectors. It is now possible to adjust the
incoming volume using the OR IN selector on the rear panel. Ideally, listen on the
headphone, with the headphone volume control knob in a medium position and
then adjust the OR IN selector so that the volume is loud enough, but not too
loud, which could cause distortion. That way, each interpreter has plenty of room
to increase the individual volume controls based on personal preference.
5. Connect a transmitter or other language distribution device (sold separately) to
output A. The connector is XLR male. Use an adapter if your transmitter does not
use XLR-style connectors. Select the FOREIGN switch on the front and turn on
a microphone. It is now possible to adjust the outgoing microphone volume
using the MIC GAIN selector on the rear panel. Ideally, listen on a receiver (sold
separately), with the transmitter tuned to the proper frequency, with the receiver
volume in a medium position. Then adjust the MIC GAIN selector so that the
volume is loud enough, but not too loud, which could cause distortion. That way,
each attendee with a receiver has plenty of room to increase his or her individual
volume based on personal preference.

BI-DIRECTIONAL OPERATION WITH TWO INTERPRETED LANGUAGES
At this time, you are operating the Interpreter Control Unit PL ICU 22 in the most basic
way – interpretation from one source language into one foreign language.
Using only one Interpreter Control Unit, you can add an additional transmitter (sold
separately) and thus provide bi-directional interpretation on two channels. For example,
interpretation not only from English into a foreign language, but also from the foreign
language back into English is possible.
Simply connect a second transmitter to the output OUT B via XLR-style connectors.
OUT B corresponds to the ENGLISH selector on the front. The interpreters can now
decide into which language they interpret at any given time. For example, if English is
spoken on the floor, interpreters interpret from English to the foreign language and
select FOREIGN. Their interpretation goes out on output OUT A, which is transmitted
on the first selected frequency. Foreign-language listeners tune into that frequency on
their receivers.
If the floor language changes to the foreign language, then the interpreters now interpret
from the foreign language into English. Therefore, they select ENGLISH. Their
interpretation now goes out on output OUT B, which is transmitted on the second
selected frequency. English listeners tune into that frequency on their receivers.
MULTIPLE LANGUAGES FROM ONE SOURCE LANGUAGE WITHOUT RELAY
If interpretation back into the source language is not required, but interpretation into
multiple foreign languages is required, the combination of multiple Interpreter Control
Units PL ICU 22 is ideal.
Using additional Interpreter Control Units and additional transmitters, it is possible to
provide interpretation from one floor language (e.g. English) into an unlimited number of
foreign languages by “daisy-chaining” multiple Interpreter Control Units.
Simply use an XLR PL ICUble (sold separately) to provide a sound feed from the first
Interpreter Control Unit to the next one by connecting the XLR PL ICUble to output OUT
B of the first unit and then into the input OR IN of the second unit. Basically, the first unit
functions as the audio feed for the second one. Connect transmitters to each
subsequent unit, as described above for stand-alone operation.
Ensure that all interpreters have their listening selectors set to OR. Also ensure that all
the pass-through selectors are ON (otherwise, no sound can be transferred from one
unit to the next). Use the OR GAIN selectors on each unit to fine-tune the incoming
sound levels of each Interpreter Control Unit.
You can continue this chain indefinitely.

MULTIPLE LANGUAGES WITH RELAY
Relay refers to a situation in which three or more languages are used in a meeting, and
interpretation is required not just from the source language into two or more foreign
languages, but also from one or more of the foreign languages back into the source
language. This setup is possible using two or more Interpreter Control Units PL ICU 22
in conjunction with a multi-channel audio mixer (sold separately).
Please ensure that you have an experienced audio technician at hand for this type of
setup and then contact ProLingo or your dealer for personalized instructions.
