DUAL AUDIO DISTRIBUTION AMPLIFIER CARD
899B
The 800 Series Audio Distribution Amplifiers are
designed for use in professional audio appli ations.
Ea h model is designed to a ept an audio signal(s)
in, and send the signal(s) to multiple destinations.
Typi al appli ations are publi address announ ements
that must be fed to different zones or power amplifiers,
program material that must be fed to different studios,
headphone listening systems where the user an sele t
different program sour es, or audio re ording systems
where the program material must be fed to the re ord-
ers at the same time it is being fed to a publi address
system. The a tual appli ation of the distribution ampli-
fiers is found in su h buildings as airports, fa tories,
ourthouses, asinos, onvention enters, libraries,
ra etra ks, training systems, and orporate board-
rooms, to mention a few.
The 800 Series Audio Distribution Amplifiers are
designed to in orporate a ombination of features that
will allow the units to deliver maximum performan e
and reliability. Ea h ir uit is designed with a minimum
of omponents, to redu e the possibility of failure, while
still maintaining perfroman e and feature riteria.
The Model 899B is a dual, 1 input by 2 output devi e. Ea h
of the two identi al ir uits may be used to “split” an audio
feed to two different lo ations.
The gain stru ture of the Model 899B allows the level of
ea h output to be individually adjusted. The output level
may be adjusted up, or down, with respe t to the input
level. If a low input level is present, and more gain is
required, the input se tion has an additional 15dB of gain.
The trimpots used to adjust the input and output levels are
mounted on the a ompanying ba kplane assembly.
This feature allows the system gain settings to remain
adjusted, even when a distribution amplifier is removed
from it's slot, and a spare unit is plugged into that slot.
Sin e the 800 Series ADA's are used to onne t multiple
pie es of audio equipment, and there exists the potential
for reating ground loops when doing so, the input se -
tion, and ea h of the outputs are individually isolated
using high quality audio transformers. This feature pro-
vides the maximum in isolation and ground loop preven-
tion.

INSTALLATION
The 800 Series Audio Distribution Amplifiers are
designed to be mounted in the Model 857B Card
Frame, or the Model 858B Card Frame.
The Model 857B Card Frame will a omodate up to
10 audio ards and requires an external power supply.
(Model 66708). The Model 858B will a omodate up to
9 audio ards and has an internal power supply. (Model
2000-PS-A)
Both ard frame assemblies bus the DC power to the in-
dividual ard slots, and provide s rew-type barrier termin-
ation points for audio and DC onne tions.
The determination as to whi h ba kplane assembly to use
in your proje t, was made prior to our fa tory re eiving
the order. The ba kplane assembly you have re eived
will a ommodate the group of ards you or your designer
have spe ified.
4- Unpack each individual card, inspect for shipping
damage, and assuming none is found, slide the
ard
half-way into the appropriate slot. After all ards have
been installed half-way into the ard frame, plug in one
ard at a time and turn on the power supply. Make sure no
unusual loading is noti ed at the power supply. If loading
is noti ed, turn off the power supply, unplug the ard and
re he k terminations. If no loading is noti ed, ontinue
inserting ea h ard in the ard frame, he king power
supply loading as ea h ard is plugged in. When all the
ards have been plugged in, the installation is omplete,
and all that remains is the alignment.
Ea h 800 Series ard with line level inputs has been
shipped from the fa tory aligned for unity gain. This
alignment optimizes headroom. If additional gain is
required, the following alignment pro edure is re om-
mended;
This ompletes the installation and alignment of your 800
Series Audio Distribution amplifiers. The ards may be
expe ted to deliver years of uninterrupted servi e.

ALIGNMENT
The a tual steps ne essary for installation of the 800
Audio Distribution Amplifier ards, are omparable to
those ne essary for any of the 800 series ards. They are
as follows:
1- Mount the ard frame in an appropriate EIA 19" width
ra k, using 4 s rews of suffi ient tensile strength to
provide se ure mounting.
2- A determination has been made as to whi h type of
power supply will be used on your system. Follow the
instru tions for the type of power supply you will be
installing.
EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY. If an external power
supply is to be used, terminate the proper supply
onne tions to pins 1, 2, & 3 of the DC barrier onne tor,
as shown in the ard frame layout drawing. Turn on the
power supply, and using a DC voltmeter, he k for
orre t voltage and polarity at pins 1, 2, & 3 of the barrier
onne tor.
INTERNAL POWER SUPPLY. If a plug-in power supply
ard is to be used, plug in the supply ard, and he k for
proper illumination of both the positive and negative
voltage LED's, on the power supply ard.
3- Terminate all audio input and output onne tions, using
the ard onne tion drawing on the fa ing page. Double
ondu tor shielded able is re ommended for all audio
onne tions. Terminate ea h unused input with a 1K ohm
resistor.
Apply a signal representative of the
a tual signal level to be used, to the
input.
While monitoring the #1 output han-
nel, turn the output #1 gain trimpot
lo kwise (in reased gain), or oun-
ter lo kwise (de reased gain) until
the output signal rea hes the de-
sired level.
Repeat step #2 for ea h output on
your distribution amplifier. For any
unused output, leave the gain
trimpot in the maximum ounter-
lo kwise position.
Note 1-
The alignment pro edure outlined above will almost al-
ways provide the desired output level. However, when
an unusually low input signal level is present (less than -
20dB), the installer may wish to use the additional gain
available in the input gain stage. This gain should be used
only when ea h output has already been adjusted to the
maximum gain setting.Using this gain in systems whi h do
not require in ex ess of 20dB of gain, will result in redu ed
headroom.
Note 2-
The alignment pro edures for INTEGRA III Series ards,
differ from ard type to ard type. Therefore it is ne essary
to onsult the alignment pro edure for ea h type of ard
being installed, to properly align a ard frame using
different ard types.
