S8683 PWS RECEIVE LINE AMPLIFIER, +5/+15
The S8683 PWS Receive Line Amp is an InGaP HBT monolithic amplifier. The
S8683 is intended for remote-mounting antennas to a receiver or DB series
antenna distribution system in large installations in order to shorten the
distance from the transmitters. The unit receives power through its output
port from the receiver or distribution amplifier or with an optional 12VDC
power supply unit (sold separately). When an antenna is remote-mounted,
the S8683 amplifies the received radio signals in order to isolate antennas
from cable interactions. The unit also features a gain selector switch to adjust
for longer lengths of coaxial cable (5 dB for under 100 ft, 15 dB for over 100
ft).
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Determine the length of cable required to connect the S8683 amplifier to the receiver or PWS GX-4 or GX-8 antenna distribution system.
2. Connect the antenna to the “To Antenna” port on the unit.
3. Connect the “To Receiver” port to the receiver or PWS GX-4 or GX-8 antenna distribution system using low-loss 50 ohm cable.
4. For installations with extremely long cable runs, an extra S8683 amplifier may be necessary. If so, repeat steps 1 to 3 and then refer to
the instructions for adjusting for different cable lengths.
IMPORTANT:
Always use low-loss 50 ohm cable, such as RG-8X or equivalent. PWS S9046 25 ft or 50 ft or 100 ft cables are recommended.
Always test and adjust the positioning of antennas for each individual setup. Experiment with the location of the antennas in order to find the
optimum location.
APPLICATION
Each setup situation is unique and the techniques will vary for each one. Generally, the antennas should be as far apart as possible in order to
create the widest RF field and ensure signal reception. In a diversity system, PWS recommends that the two antennas be positioned at 45
degree angles pointing away from one another in order to guarantee the widest possible RF field and minimize the chance of the RF signal
dropouts.
ADJUSTING FOR DIFFERENT CABLE LENGTHS
The longer the length of the coaxial cables between the receiver or GX-4 or GX-8 antenna distribution system and the antennas, the greater
the signal loss. In order to compensate for this loss, the S8683 amplifier comes equipped with a gain switch (5 dB or 15 dB).
Set the gain switch to the 5 dB position for cables up to 100 ft. For cables over 100 ft, set the gain switch to 15 dB (see Figure 1).
If the coaxial cable required is over 200 ft, a maximum of two S8683 amplifiers can be chained together.
DC SWITCH OPERATION
When using “daisy chain” operations, be sure to set the DC switch to pass (see Figure 1).
