Thankyouforpurchasing thisqualityproductfromQuatrosenseEnvironmentalLtd.(QEL).Wewantyou
toenjoymanyyearsofeffectiveuseandprotectionfromyourQTS-6100 SeriesUniversalElectrochemical
ToxicSensor/Transmitter.Thismanualisintendedtoprovideyouwithallofthedetailsyouneedto
properlyinstall, operate, andmaintainyourequipment.
Toproperlypreparetoinstall,configure,andstart-up yourQTS-6100SeriesUniversalElectrochemical
ToxicSensor/Transmitterwerecommendthatyoureadthosesectionsofthemanualbeforebeginning the
work.Thesectionsatthebeginningofthemanualcoveringdescription,specifications,andtheoryof

2.BASICDESCRIPTION
TheQTS-6100SeriesUniversalElectrochemicalToxicSensor/Transmitterisasignificantupgradefromour
previouselectrochemicalsensor/transmitters.Itfeaturesimprovedperformance andtheabilitytoconfigure
thetransmitterforanyoflonglistofelectrochemicalsensorelementsofferedbyQEL.Thetransmitters
operateoverawidetolerance ofDCpowerandprovidea4to20 mADCoutputinatwo-wireconnection.
ThesensorportionoftheseunitsisaCityTechnologycompactelectrochemicalsensorelement,selected
specificallyforthegastobemeasured.Theseelementsarecompletelysealedandareanon-consuming
technology.Thismeansthattheelectrolytesolutionisnotconsumedbythenormaloperationofthesensor.
Typicallifeforthesesensorsistwotothree yearsinnormaloperation,withrecalibrationrecommended
everythree months.See Section4-“TheoryofOperation”fordetailsonhowthesesensorsfunction.
Thetransmitterportionoftheseunitsusessolidstatecomponentsontwocircuitcardassembliestomeasure
theDCmicroampsignalfromthesensorelementandconvertittoa4to20 mADCoutput.The
transmitterelectronicscanbefieldconfiguredviasolderless shortinglinkstoacceptanyoneoftherangeof
electrochemicalsensorsoffered.Across thisrangetherearedifferingrequirementsforbatteryvoltage,gain
resistance, ashortingFET, andthepolarityofthesensoroutput.See Section6-“Configuration”fordetails
onconfiguringthetransmitter.
Thetransmitterelectronicsarepoweredwithtwo-wire24 VDCandtransmitthe4to20 mADCoutputover
thesametwowires.Theyhavebeendesignedtoprovideprotectionfrominterference causedbyRadio
Frequency(RFI) andElectro-Magnetic(EMI) sources.Thedesignshavebeentestedforproperoperation
underradiatedinterference of4wattsatadistanceof1meter.See Section5-“Installation”fordetailson
properwiringandgroundingtoensureproperoperation.
Accessiblefromthetopofthetransmitteraretestjacksthatwillacceptstandarddigitalmultimetertestleads.
Thetransmitter4to20 mADCsignalcanbemonitoredfromthesetestpointswithoutinterruptingtheoutput
signal.Twotrim potentiometersprovideadjustmentofzeroandspanforaccuratecalibrationofthe
transmittertospecificgasconcentrations.Nolinearizationadjustmentsarerequiredaselectrochemical
cellsareinherentlylinear.
Thesensor/transmitterassembliesareofferedinavarietyofenclosures.Theserangefromgeneralpurpose
NEMA1enclosuresthroughtoexplosion-proofenclosureslistedbyCSA,UL,andFMforClass1, Division
1, GroupsB,C,Dservice.Thesametransmitterboardassemblyisusedforallenclosuretypes.Theplug-
insensorelementconnectsdirectlytothetransmittercircuitcardassemblyintheABSplasticNEMA1and
NEMA4enclosures.Analuminumorstainless steelsealedsensorassemblyisprovidedfortheplug-in
sensorelementontheexplosion-proofenclosures. Thesensorconnectstothecircuitcardassemblyviaa
connectorattheendofleadsextendingfromthesensorassembly.

4.THEORY OFOPERATION
4.1ElectrochemicalSensorElements
ThesensorportionoftheQTS-6100 isacompactCityTechnologyelectrochemicalsensor.Thesesensors
aremicro-fuelcellsthatarecompletelysealedsoastobemaintenance free andstableforlongperiods.The
measurementisagas-in-liquidchemicalreactionratherthanasurface area measurement.Withnosurface
area tocoat,thesesensorsretaintheirsensitivitytogasessuchasH2Sevenafterprolongedexposuretoclean
air.
Thecellconsistsofadiffusionbarrier,O-ring seal,
electrolytereservoirandthree electrodes;Sensing,
Counter,andReference (see Fig. 1).Thetargetgasenters
thecellthroughadiffusionbarrier.Thechemical
process ofthemeasurementisoneofoxidationwhere
onemoleculeofthetargetgasisexchangedforone
moleculeofoxygen.Thereactiondrivestheoxygen
moleculetotheCounterelectrode,generatingaDC
microampsignalbetweentheSensingandCounter
electrodes.Thissignalislineartothevolume
concentrationofthesensedgasratherthanthepartial
pressure.Thesesensorswillnotrespondtonormal
variationsinatmosphericpressure.
Insomecases,biasing isrequiredtomaintainavoltagedifferentialbetweentheReference andSensing
electrodesinordertofacilitatethenecessaryreactioninthecell.Thetransmitterelectronicswill provide
thenecessarybiasvoltagewhenconfiguredforoneofthesesensortypes.Mostsensorsproduceasmall
amountof“baseline” currentincleanair.Thisisadjustedoutwiththezeropotentiometeronthe
transmitter.
Thisoxidationattheelectrodescauseswear,andlimitsthelifeofthesensor.Typicallifeforthesesensors
istwotothree yearsinnormaloperation.Thiswillvarysomewhatfromsensortosensor,withsome
workinglifetimesexceeding fouryears.Thiswearalsochangesthecharacteristicsofthesensor,requiring
regularre-calibration.Itisrecommendedthatthesesensorsbere-calibratedeverythree monthsoras
necessary.
*CAUTION* Replacementsensorelementswhicharenotbiastypesareshippedwithatinyspring
ofwireshortingtheSenseand ReferenceElectrodes.Thisspringmustberemoved
priortoinstallingtheelementtothesensorassembly.

4.2TwoWireTransmitters
Thestandardtransmitteroutputsignalis4-20mADC.Ifthecurrentdrawrequiredforoperationofthe
transmitterisless than4mADC,thenonlytwowiresareneeded;forpowerandsignal(See figure2).The
connectiontogroundissuppliedbythemonitoring equipment,whichmeasuresthevoltagedevelopedbythe
currentacross aprecisionresistor.Afunctioningtransmitterwill alwaysdrawitsoperatingcurrent,so
therewill alwaysbesomeoutputsignalinafunctioningcircuit.
4.3IntrinsicSafetyvs. ExplosionProofEnclosuresforHazardousLocations
Specialconsiderationsarenecessaryinhazardouslocationsareaswhereflammableorexplosivedustsand/or
gasesmaybepresent.SuchareasaregenerallyclassifiedaseitherClass1(gases)orClass2(dusts)and
Division1(dangerisnormallypresent)orDivision2(dangerispresentunderfailureconditions).An
additionalGroup lettercodespecifiesthegasesordustspresentingthehazard.Electricalequipment
installedintheseareasmustbeprotectedfromgeneratingasparkofsufficientignitiontemperaturethatan
explosionmayoccur.Therearetwoapproachestotheseinstallations.
Thefirstapproachistoinstalltheelectricalequipmentincertifiedexplosion-proofenclosures.When
properlyinstalled,theseheavymetalenclosuresaresealedfromthehazardousconditionandguaranteedto
containanysparkorflamethatmightoccurintheelectronics.Unfortunately,access tothecontents
requiresmeasurestoensurethatthearea isinanon-hazardouscondition.
ThesecondapproachisanIntrinsicallySafe(IS)installation(See Figure3).Inthisapproach,voltagesand
currentsintothehazardousarea arelimitedbyspeciallydesignedISbarriers.Theelectronicequipmentis
designedsothatenergystoragedevices(inductiveorcapacitive)intheelectricaldevicecannotstore
sufficientenergytocauseignitionofthegasestobefoundinthehazardousarea.

*WARNING* STATICELECTRICITY-Installation,wiring,configuration,orotheractivitymay
requirehandlingordisassemblyofthetransmittercircuitcardassemblies(CCA).
HandlingofaCCA withoutproperprecautionscanexposetheelectroniccomponents
tothepossibledamagefromstaticelectricitydischarge.
TrytoensureyouaregroundedwhenhandlingaCCA.Ifcontinuousgroundingis
notpractical,touchsomemetalitem,whichisknowntobegrounded.Avoid
walkingaround afterthisasyoucanregenerateastaticcharge.Notethatthe
smalleststaticdischarge,whichisnoticeablebyhumans,is3,000Volts.A
noticeable, significantdischargemay beashighas30,000 Volts
5.1Mounting
TheQTS-6100Sensor/Transmittershouldbemountedwherethegastobemeasuredismostlikelytobe
present.Thislocationwillbedependentonthesource ofthetargetgasandwhetherthatgasislighteror
heavierthanair.Aircirculationandmixtureshouldalsobetakenintoaccount.Thefollowingtable
providesrecommendedmountinglocationbasedonthemolecularweightofthegas:

powerrangeof12 to36VDC.Theresistanceofthe
loadthatthe4to20 mADCoutputcanbedriveninto
isrelativetothevoltageavailableatthetransmitter
(see Figure4).Whencalculatingpowersupply
requirements,all loadsonthetransmitterneedtobe
totaled,including wiring andanyaccessorydevices
suchasintrinsicsafetybarriers.

6.CONFIGURATION
NOTE:Ifyouhaveorderedacompletesensor/transmitterassemblyitwill comefromthe
factoryproperlyconfiguredand calibratedforthespecificsensorelementselected.
Thefollowingconfigurationinformationisprovidedforwhenareplacement
transmittermustbeconfiguredoranexistingtransmitterre-configuredtoaccepta
differentsensorelementtype.
Thetransmitterelectronicspackageiscomposedoftwocircuitcardassemblies(CCA)andatopplate(see
Figures6and7).Configurationofthetransmitterfordifferentsensorelementsisperformedwithanumber
ofsolderlessshortinglinkspresentoneachCCA.Theseshortinglinks
configurethetransmitterforbiasing,polarity,battery,shortingFET, and
propergainresistance.Tochangetheconfigurationremovethesmall
plasticshortinglink thatispluggedovertheshorting pinsandreplaceas
requiredintables2and3below.

7.START-UPAND COMMISSIONING
TheQTS-6100 SeriesSensor/Transmittercomesfromthefactorycompletelyconfigured,testedand
calibratedasordered.Verifythemodelnumberiscorrectandfollowtheinstallationinstructionsinthis
manual.Checkall wiring priortoapplyingpowertothetransmitter.Usingadigitalmultimeter
(DVOM),checkpowerattheterminalstoensureanominal24 VDCispresent.ConnecttheDVOMtothe
testjacksontheupperCCAwitharangeselectedthatwilldisplay20 mADC.Thereadingonthetest
jacksistheactualoutputfromthetransmitter.
Itisnotuncommonfortheelectrochemicalsensortoregisteraresponsewhenfirststartedup,eveninclean
air.Ifthesensorwasnotcovered,somegasesmayhaveenteredthecellandnotbeenclearedbythe
unpoweredunit.Generallythesensorwill befullywarmedup andclearofanygaseswithinonehourof
powerbeingapplied.Underextremeconditionsthisperiodmaybeaslongas24 hours.Theexceptionto
thisistheammonia(NH3)sensor.Thissensorwilltakebetweenthree andfivedaystobefullywarmedup
andprovideastableoutput.Calibrationofanytransmittershouldnotbeperformeduntil thesensorisfully
warmedup andstable.
8.ROUTINEMAINTENANCE
8.1Calibration
RecommendedcalibrationoftheQTS-6100 SeriesSensor/Transmitterisevery90 days,orasnecessary.
Theusershouldtakeintoaccountactualinstallationenvironmentandthepossibilitiesforfailureduetowater
orcorrosiveatmospheres.Theseriousnessofafailuretoalarmorthelackofprecisioninthatlocation
shouldalsobeconsideredandcalibrationperiodsadjustedaccordingly.
8.1.1EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

• Screwdriver; Small, foradjustingtrim potentiometers.

TwosmalljacksareontheupperCCAofthetransmitter,accessiblethroughholesonthecoverplate(see
figure8).Thesejackswillacceptstandardtestleadsfrommosthandheldmultimeters.Setthedigital
multimeteronaDCmilliamprangetoreadupto20mADCandconnectthetestleadstothetestjacks.
Thecircuitisdiodeprotected,soastoallowmeasurementwithoutinterruptionofthetransmitteroutput.
Connectthetubingbetweentheflowregulatorandthecalibrationadapter.
NOTE:Adjustmentstothezeropotentiometerwilleffectthespanadjustment.Adjustments
tothespanpotentiometerwillhaveanegligibleeffectonthezeroadjustmentunless
theyaremajor.Idealcalibrationwillbeobtainedbyrepeatingthefollowingzero
and spanadjustmentstwice.

8.2SensorElementReplacement
Astheelectrochemicalsensorages,oxidationwearsawaythemeasuringelectrodes.Thisreducesthe
outputofthesensor,requiring regularre-calibration.Eventuallyitwillnotbepossibletoadjustthespan
potentiometerenoughtobringthetransmitteroutputtothecorrectlevel.Whenthishappensthesensor
elementmustbereplaced.
Thesensorelementisasmall,plug-incellwithfourpinsonthebottom.Thecell isshippedfromthe
factoryinasealedplasticcylindricalcontainer.Thesealedcontainerpreventscontaminationofthecell by
gases, dirt, andotherforeignmatterpriortoinstallation.
NOTE:Whereverpossible,donotremovethesensorfromthesealedcontaineruntilyouare
readytoinstall it.Thiswill maximizethelifeofthecell and minimizethewarmup
time.
Whenyoufirstremovethesensorfromthecontainer,ashortingwirewillbeacross theconnectionpins.
Thiswirepreventsdegradationofelectrodesduringstorage.Whenproperlyinstalled,thetransmitter
supportsthisfunctionwhetherpoweredorunpowered.
*CAUTION* Before installingthesensorelement,anyshortingwiresattachedtothepinsmustbe
removed.Thesensorwill notoperatewiththeseshortingwiresconnected.
Newlyinstalledsensorelementsshouldbeleftpoweredforatleast24 hoursbeforecalibration.Ammonia
(NH3)cellsshouldbeleftforatleastthree days,preferablyfivedaysbeforecalibration.Thiswillallowthe
sensortoburnoffanygasesthatmayhavediffusedintothecell beforeinstallationandtofullywarm-up and
stabilize.

9.FIELDTROUBLE SHOOTING
9.1SensorLife
Theresponsetogasofelectrochemicalsensorswillreduce withtimeduetooxidationontheelectrodes.
Therateofreductionisdependentuponsuchfactorsasambienttemperature,humidity,andexposuretogas.
Inordertocompensateforthis,thegainofthetransmittercanbeincreasedwhentheunitiscalibratedinthe
fieldbyadjustingthegain(span)potentiometer.Ifthepotentiometeradjustmentisinsufficient,thegain
jumpermaybemovedtoonehighergainposition, i.e. JP4toJP5, orJP5toJP6.
*CAUTION* Thegainjumpershouldnotbemovedbymorethanoneposition,i.e.,DONOTmove
JP4toJP6,asthiscouldincreasethegaintoo muchcausingtheamplificationof
sensornoise, resultinginunacceptablejitteronthe4-20 mAoutput.
Ifthespansignalcannotbeachievedbyadjusting thegain,ortheincreaseingainresultsinunacceptable
jitterontheoutput, thenthesensormustbereplaced.
9.2TransmitterElectronics
*WARNING* STATICELECTRICITY-Installation,wiring,configuration,orotheractivitymay
requirehandlingordisassemblyofthetransmittercircuitcardassemblies(CCA).
HandlingofaCCA withoutproperprecautionscanexposetheelectroniccomponents
tothepossibledamagefromstaticelectricitydischarge.
TrytoensureyouaregroundedwhenhandlingaCCA.Ifcontinuousgroundingis
notpractical,touchsomemetalitem,whichisknowntobegrounded.Avoid
walkingaround afterthisasyoucanregenerateastaticcharge.Notethatthe
smalleststaticdischarge,whichisnoticeablebyhumans,is3,000Volts.A
noticeable, significantdischargemay beashighas30,000 Volts
ThetwoCCAsarethelowestleveloffieldreplaceableassembly.Theseassembliesmustbereplacedwith
thepowerremovedfromthetransmitter.See Figure11 foranexplodedviewofthetransmitterCCAsand
associatedhardware, andfordetailsonthedisassemblyandreassemblyprocedures.
Theonlylifelimitedcomponentinthetransmitterelectronicsisalithiumbattery.Thisbatteryisusedto
provideabiasvoltagetocertaintypesofelectrochemicalsensorsonlywhenthetransmitterisunpowered.
Intheunpoweredconditionthelithiumbatterywillhavealifetimeofatleastsixmonths.Inthepowered
conditionthelifetimeisexpectedtobeatleasttenyears.
ThelithiumbatteryissolderedintothelowerCCA,andthereforeifitisnecessarytoreplace itinthefield
theLowerCCAmustbereplaced.
