QAS-51000 SERIES GASDETECTIONSYSTEMS
The QAS-51000 seriesrack orwall mountsinglechannelcontrollersaredesigned to
acceptany4to20 mAlinearsignal.The controllerhasahigh visibility3digitLED
displayand 3DPDTonboardrelays withhigh,lowand fail alarm levels.Itwill also
support 2-wireand 3-wireremotetransmittersat 25 to30 VDC.
The QAS-51000 isan extremelycompactunit, based on a100 mm by160mm eurocard
withatwoinchwide front panel. Eight controllerswill fit inone standard19"x5.25"rack.
Wall mount enclosuresareavailablefor2, 4orup to8controllers.

FRONTPANELFEATURES AND ADJUSTMENTS
POWERON/OFF
Individualon/off toggleswitch. NOTE: The QAS-51000 hasadelayon turn-on of
approximately1minutetoprevent turn-on surgesfromtripping alarms. The reading will
appearnearzeroforthisperiod.
DISPLAY
Three digit high visibilityLEDdisplay.
CHANGEABLELEGENDWINDOW
The QAS-51000 will displayany4to20 mAsignalintoa3-digit display. A legend
windowisprovided forlabeling the controller: writeortype the legend, e.gCH4%LEL,
on astripofpaperroughly0.25 inchby1.8inchand slide it intothe slot on the right of
the panel. Cut off anyexcess. See figure1.
MEMBRANESWITCHFUNCTIONS
'Span' Displays reading expected when controllerreceives20 mAsignal.
'High' Alarm Displays setting ofhigh alarm trippoint
'Low' Alarm Displays setting oflowalarm trippoint
'Test' Injectsasignalofapproximately22 mAintothe controllertotest all alarm features
'Reset' When alarm condition hasbeen removed thiswill reset latched alarms
ADJUSTMENTS
Adjustmentsaremade through holesinthe front panelusing aslot-head screwdriveror
trimmeradjust tool.
SETSPAN
'Span' isthe full scalereading, i.e.when the controllerisreceiving 20 mA. Press the 'Span'
switchtodisplaythe current setting and adjust the 'set span'.
SETALARMS
Press the high orlowalarm switchtodisplaythe current setting and adjust. Notethat the
displaywill onlyshowthe turn-on pointsifthe unit isnot inalarm; ifit isinalarm orif'Test' is
pressed simultaneously, the displaywill showwherethe unit will comeout ofalarm.

INTERNALFEATURES
RELAYS
3DPDT(form C)on boardrelays permodule, forhigh, lowand fail setpoints. Rated at 5Amps
at 250 VAC, 30 VDC Resistive.
AUDIO
Individualaudioalarm (withinternalon/off switch)
POWERSUPPLY
120 VACor240 VAC50 to60Hz, 10 VA. The on boardtransformerhasdualprimariesfor
either120 VACor240 VAC. The standardconfiguration isfor120 VAC, howeverif240 VACis
required afactorymodification can be made.
TRANSMITTERPOWERSUPPLY
The QAS-51000 hasbeen designed tosupport anyofQEL'sline ofremotetransmittersas
well asmanyothertypes. The powersupplyforthe transmittershasregulated current and the
voltage will varyfrom24 VDC to32 VDC depending on the load.
4–20 mASIGNALS
QELtwoand three wiretransmittersall supply4to20 mAlinearsignals.Thoseuserswho wish
tomonitorsignalsfromotherequipment maydo sousing onlysignaland ground connections.
It isalsopossibletouseQELtransmitterswithlocalpowersuppliesratherthan that supplied
bythe controllerwherewiresavingsmakethisworthwhile
FUSE
The powersupplyisfused on the primary. The fuseislocated on the bottomofthe main
circuit board.

EXTRACTING MODULEFROMRACK
TurnpowerswitchOFF on front panelbeforeremoving amodule. Makesurethat none ofthe
relaycontactsarecarrying large amountsofpower(Fail isnormallyenergized and will switch
when poweristurned off). Arcing when breaking contact can damage the connectorsat the
back ofthe board.
The QAS-51000 controllermoduleisheldinthe rack on cardguidesand secured bycaptive
screwsthrough the top and bottomofthe front panel. Thesescrewsmust be loosened before
removing the module. The moduleisheldfirmlyinacard-edge socket at the back. Pull firmly
but carefullyon the handleaftermaking certainthat the retaining screwsareno longer
screwed intothe rack frame, and slide the moduleout along the cardguides.
Replacement isthe reverseofthis, sliding the modulecircuit boardalong the cardguide and
carefullypressing it intothe socket at the back beforesecuring withthe screws.
ON-BOARD SWITCHES –Userswitchedfunctions
Therearethree on-boardswitchblocks enabling the usertoselect certainfunctions
asrequired. The switchblocks arereferred toas, forinstance, SB1(3)-the thirdswitch
on switchblock 1.
AUDIO.
Switching SB1(2)on enablesthe buzzertosound on fail and high alarms. When the controller
isspecified tobe used foroxygen withdeficiency and excess alarmsorwhen otherwise
specified the buzzerwill sound forthe lowalarm condition aswell.
LATCHING ALARMS
Relays/alarmsmaybe nonlatching orlatching depending upon switchesoff oron respectively.

DECIMALPLACE
The meterisnot auto-ranging and sothe range ofinterest and the accuracy isset bythe
operatordepending upon the span used and the accuracy ofthe signalortransducer. Asa
ruleofthumbchoosing additionaldecimalplacesmakesit easiertoset the alarm levels
accurately. Gasmonitoring generallyshouldnot usemorethan one decimalplacefor
practicality.

SB2(2)00.0
