Thank you for you pur hase of the qtone DA-1001 20W Digital Amplifier. The unit has 4 inputs as
well as 2 outputs and up to 20 watts of amplifi ation. As a digital amplifier it is very effi ient (up to
93%!) While no audio is provided the amplifier uses very little power and while in use, due to its
effi ien y, requires no heat-sink.
The outputs an be used to onne t other devi es to further use the sele ted inputs sound. The
“Audio Out” if from the sele tor before any tonal adjustment, meaning that it an be used to
onne t to another amplifier or a re ording devi e and without adjusting the input. The “VU Out” is
designed for the qtone AV-1001 Audio Visualiser, this output is after the tone ontrols so is
representative of the signal to the amplifier.
The Amplifier also provides power out from the unit (12V up to 3 amps). Two options are available,
one swit hed and one onstant. The swit hed supply is turned on and off with the amplifier, useful
if an illaries are needed to be turned off with the amp. Conne ting to the onstant permanent
supply will provide power regardless of the amplifiers state; as long as the amplifier is onne ted
to a power sour e.

Speakers
When onne ting the speakers ensure the polarities are onne ted orre tly (red/positive on
amplifier to the red/positive on the speaker). If the speakers are onne ted “out of phase” (if one
speaker is onne ted the opposite way to the other) the quality of the sound will be
ompromised. It will sound thin and “tinny”.

Audio Input/Output
The onne tions to the amplifier are via the rear RCA phono onne tions. Ensure the onne tions
are to the orre t left and right so kets. Left is oloured bla k or white and the right hannel is
red.
To onne t a turntable/re ord player you will need a pre-amp as the inputs to the DA-1001 are all
‘line level’. This ould be a separate devi e or some turntables have them built in.
The “Audio Out” an be onne ted to a re ording devi e. This output is onne ted to the output of
the sele tor without any tone adjustments. This will be a dire t opy of the input.

Visualiser Audio Output
A se ond set of outputs are available on the rear of the amplifier. These take the audio after any
tonal adjustments. It is intended for use with the qtone Audio Visualiser (AV-1001). The AV-1001
an also take power from the amplifier, using the swit hed output so the visualiser will turn on
and off with the amplifier.
Be ause the audio is after tonal adjustments, the visualiser will show a representation of the
audio you are listening to.

Setting Input Sour e Pre-Amp
The amplifier has the ability to boost individual inputs regardless of the urrent volume settings.
This allows for ea h input to be set to provide a onsistent overall volume depending on a devi e.
For example: if one sour e is louder than the others then it an be redu ed so that you wouldn’t
need to adjust the master volume just for that input.
To hange the pre-amp level, enter into the name hange mode and then press the Multi-Control
knob and turn it to adjust the gain up or down.

Update Firmware/Custom Firmware
On the underside of the unit, at the front, there is a mi ro-USB port. This an be atta hed to a
omputer and updated using the Arduino IDE to add or hange features of the unit.
When there are new firmware updates this port an be used to update/upgrade the amplifier. The
qtone DA-1001 is also designed to be ‘user ha kable’. Be ause the unit uses open sour e
hardware and software ompletely ustom firmware an be added to the unit to hange how it
operates. This is for the brave only! It runs the risk of “bri king” the amplifier (although it is often
possible to re over the unit).
Compiling Firmware From Sour e
You an download the sour e ode for the DA-1001 from the qtone website. You will also need to
install the Arduino IDE (available from www.arduino. ).
To ompile there are a few additional libraries that need to be installed:
1) En oder
2) Boun e2
3) LiquidCrystal_I2C
All of these an be installed using the Arduino’s “Library Manager” in the “Sket h” menu.
●Conne t the amplifier to the omputer and in the “Tools” menu li k Board and sele t “Arduino
Nano”
●Sele t the orre t COM port (see above if unsure)
●Finally li k the “Right Arrow” button to ompile and upload the firmware.
