guaranteedagainst
defectsarising
outof
faulty
or
defectivematerials
or
workmanship
fora
period
ofONE
YEAR
from
the
date
ofpurchase.
In
case
ofa
defectdevelopingwithin
the
period
of
warranty
RADEL
ELECTRONICS
(P)LTD.,
will
undertake
to
repair
the
instrumentfree
of
charge,
provided
the
instrument
is
returned
tothe
manufacturer,
freightprepaid
with
adequatepacking.
This
guarantee
is
void
in
case
ofanyofthe
following
:
1.
The
instrument
is
damaged
by
physicalabuse,improper
handling,
reckless
useor
negligence
ofthe
user;
2.Any
repairs
or
modifications
are
attempted
onthe
instrument
by
unauthorisedpersons;
3.
The
Warranty
Seal
onthe
rearcover
ofthe
instrument
is
removed
or
tamperedwith;
4.
The

GENERAL
INFORMATION
The"Taalmala"ElectronicTablaisa sophisticatedmusical
instrument.
Itproducestheactualsoundofa tabla.Itcan
play,by
itself,
thethekasforallthecommonlyusedtaalsof
Hindustaniclassicalmusic.Itis
fully
solid-stateand
incorporatesthelatesttechnologyusingmicroprocessors.
ItcanbeusedonACmainsaswellasonbatteries.
The"Taalmala"isavailableintwomodels,viz.,PT-13and
PT-24.
ThePT-13iscapableofplaying13taalswhereas
thePT-24produces24taalsandisalsocapableofbeing
programmedbytheuser.
The"Taalmala"canbetunedtoanydesiredpitchovera
rangeofoneoctave.Facilityhasbeenprovidedforselecting
four
layaranges- Ativilambit,vilambit,madhyalayaand
dhrut.
Withineachrange,thespeedcanbegradually
changed
bythe
turn
ofa knob.A Balancecontrolisprovided
foradjustingtherelativeloudnessofthe
right
hand(dayan)
and
left
hand(bayan),asdesired.
A
SPEAKER
sockethasbeenprovidedforconnectingan
externalloudspeaker.Useofanexternalloudspeakerof
goodquality,mountedina welldesignedspeakerenclosure
of
size
atleast20litres,wouldresultinanimproved
reproductionofthebayan.A LINEOUTSockethasalso
been
providedforconnectiontoanexternalamplifierand
speaker
system,ifrequired.A

that
a synchronisedlehera

2.0OPERATING
INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE:
Oneofthenewfeaturesofthe"Taalmala"isthe
productionofa PIP'whenanykeyispressed.Ifan
unacceptable
Keyispressed,three
PIPs'
areproducedto
indicateanemx.Two
LEDs,
onetoindicatethe
first
matra
and
theotherto indicateeachmatraareprovided.

Before
inserting
the
mains
plug
into
the
wall
socket,check
that
the
voltage
selectoratthe
rear

can

230V

2.2PlugthemainscordintotheACwallsocket.
2.3SwitchtheinstrumentONbyturningtheknobmarked
VOLUME,
ON/OFF
clockwise,andincreasethevolumeby
a
quarterturn.
2.4
Press
the
STOP
(red)keyoncetoinitiallypreparethe
instrumentforoperation.
2.5Selectanytaalbypressingthecorrespondingtaalselection
key.
Ifnotaalisinitiallyselected,TeenTaalwouldbe
automaticallyselectedbytheinstrument.
2.6
Press
the
START
(black)keytocommencethetheka.The
thekawillalwayscommencefromthe
first
matraofthecycle
(theSAM).
2.7Adjustthepitchofthe
right
hand(dayan)byturningtheknob
marked
PITCH.
2.8Adjusttherelativevolumesofthe
right
handand
left
hand
as
desired,byturningtheknobmarked
BALANCE.
Turning
thisknobanticlockwiseincreasesthevolumeofthe
left
handwhilereducingthevolumeofthe
right
handandvice
versa
2.9Adjusttheknobmarked
TEMPO
toobtainanydesiredspeed
withintheselectedrange.Thiscanbeadjustedwhenever
desired,
evenwhilethethekaisbeingproduced.
2.10Thethekacanbestoppedatanyinstantbypressingthe
STOP
key.
2.11Restartthesamethekawheneverrequiredbysimply
pressing
the
START
key.(Thethekawillagaincommence
fromtheSAM).
2.12Tochangethetaal,stopthetheka
first
andthenpressthe
desired
taalselectionkey.
Press
START
keytostartthenew
theka.
2.13Selection'of
Laya
Ranges:
Fourlayarangeshavebeen
provided- Ativilambit,vilambit,madhyalayaanddhrut.
When
theinstrumentisinitiallyswitchedON,theDhrutlaya
is
automaticallyselected.
Laya
rangecanbealteredby
pressing
theINCorDECkeys.
(Note:-
Every
time
the
laya
range
istobechanged,the
theka
hastobe
stopped).

Pressing
theINCkeyonce,raisesthelayarangetothenext
higher(faster)range.PressingtheDECkeyonce,lowers
thelayarangetothenextlower(slower)range.Pressing
thesekeystwiceorthricewillalterthelayabytwoorthree
rangesrespectively,eg.,itispossibletoalterthelayafrom
VilambittoDhrutbypressingtheINCkeytwice.However,
pressing
theINCkeywillhavenoeffectoncetheinstrument
has
reachedtheDhrutlayarange.Similarly,pressingthe
DEC
keywillhavenoeffectoncetheinstrumenthas
reached
theAtiVilambit(slowest)range.(Three
"PIPs"
are
producedinboththesecases.)
3.0OPERATIONONBATTERIES
The"Taalmala"canoperatefora limitedtimeoneight1.5V
drybatteries(size"C").(Areasonablygoodsetofbatteries
wouldlastforaboutonehourand
thirty
minutesata stretch
ata mediumlevelofvolume).Tooperateonbatteries,set
theswitchattherearoftheinstrumenttoBATandproceed
fromstep2.3above.
Cells
canbereplacedbyopeningthebatterycompartment
doorattherearoftheinstrument.

"PT24"
ThePT-24modelof"Taalmala"isoperatedinthesame
mannerasthePT-13model.Thenewtaals(markedinred)
addedinthePT-24areselectedby
first
pressingtheredkey
markedALTfollowedbyanyofthe12taalselectionkeys.
Pressing
theALTkeybeforepressinga taalkeyselectsthe
taalmarkedinredcolouragainsteachkey.
5.0PROGRAMMINGMODE
ThePT-24iscapableofbeingprogrammedbytheuserto
playanythekaofone'schoice,bypressinga sequenceof
keys
marked
with
various'bols'.Theprogramming
sequence
issimpleandallowsa maximumofthreenew
thekastobeprogrammed
into
theinstrumentatanygiven
time.Onceprogrammed,theprogrammedthekacanbe
playedbyselectingtheALTkeyandoneof3 keysmarked
GARBA,
SOOL
&
TEVRA.
Dependingonwhichofthese
keys
wasusedatthetimeofprogramming,thenew
programmedthekawouldhavereplacedoneoftheabove
mentionedtaals.Theprogrammedthekawouldbeavailable
only
till
theinstrumentisON.Oncetheinstrumentis
switched
OFF,
theprogrammedthekaswouldbelost.When
theinstrumentisswitchedONagain,theoriginalthekason
thesekeyswouldberestored:
A
total
of24bolsareavailableforprogramminga theka
throughthekeyboard.
5.1PROGRAMMINGPROCEDURE
i)Switchtheinstrument"ON"andpressthe
STOP
key.
Ensure
that
theinstrumentisworkingsatisfactorilyby
selectinganyoftheexistingtaals.
Press
the
STOP
key.
ii)
Press
PGMkey.
iii)
Press
oneofthekeysmarked
GARBA
or
SOOL
or
TEVRA
toidentifythekeyonwhichthenewprogrammed
thekawouldbeavailable.
iv)Ifanykeyotherthanoneoftheabove3 keysispressed,
theinstrumentwouldnotacceptthekeyandwouldexitfrom
theprogrammingmode.
v)Oninstrumentsprovided
with
thedigitaldisplay
(optional),thedisplayindicates"P"whenithasenteredthe
programmingmode.
vi)Now,placetheProgramOverlayCardsuppliedalong
with
theinstrument,overthekeyboardtoidentifyeachkey
with
a particularbol.
vii)
Press
thesequenceofkeyscorrespondingtothebols
markedagainsteachkey.Bolsmarkedinredareobtained
bypressingtheALTkeybeforepressingthe'bol'key.Ifthe
ALT
keyisnotpressedbeforea bolkey,thebolsmarked
inblackareprogrammed.A silentmatracanalsobe
programmedbyselectingthekeymarked(,).

Press
the
START
keytoindicatetheendofthe
sequence
ofbols.Theinstrumentwillnowgooutofthe
Programmingmodeandrevertbacktothenormalplaying
mode.
ix)Toplaytheprogrammedthekas,pressALTkeyandthe
keyonwhichthethekawasprogrammedinstep(iii)above.

6.0HELPFUL
HINTS
6.1Ifonpressingthe
START
key,thethekaisnotheard,press
STOP
keyagainandrestart.
6.2If,duringoperation,thethekastopsduetosuddenpower
fluctuationortemporarylossofpower,press
STOP
keyand
thenrestart.
6.3Anyoperationofanyknobcanbeperformed
without
stoppingthetheka.
6.4Operationofthetaalselectionkeysandthelayaselection
keys
mustbeprecededbystoppingofthetheka,ifnot
alreadystopped.
6.5Itisrecommended
that
theconditionofthebatteriesis
checked
onceintwoweekstoavoidleakageofchemicals
andconsequentdamagetotheinstrument.
6.6The"Taalmala"isa veryreliableandruggedinstrument.
Failure
ofcomponentsisrare.Nodamagecanbedoneto
itbypressingthekeysinthewrongorder.Atthemost,the
desiredthekamaynotbeachieved.Correctusageof
controls
will
thenimmediatelyensurethedesiredeffect.
8.0WARRANTY
The"Taalmala"isguaranteedagainstmanufacturing
defectsfora periodofoneyear
from
thedateof
sale.
Warrantyisvalidonlyif the
seal
ontheinstrumentisintact
andifthecompletelyfilled-incounterfoilofthewarrantycard
is
receivedbythemanufacturer
within
15daysof
sale.
The "TAALMALA"is a
maestro
at
your
command.
We

theinstrumentwouldoperateonbatteriesifthe
cordisdetached
from
thesocketattherearofthe
instrument.
