INSTALLATION
Your TAD conforms to federal regula-
tions, and you can connect it to most
telephone lines. However, each device
you connect to the phone line draws
power from the phone line. We refer to
this power draw as the device’s ringer
equivalence number, or REN. The REN
is on the label on the back of the base.

If you are using more than one phone
or other device on the line, add up all
the RENs. If the total is more than five,
your phone might not ring. In rural ar-
eas, a total REN of three might impair
ringer operation. If ringer operation is
impaired, remove a device from the
line.

provide the FCC Registration Number
and the REN to your phone company.
These numbers are on the label on the
back of the base.
You must not connect your phone to
any of the following:
• Coin-operated systems
• Party-line systems
• Most electronic key phone systems
Note: Your telephone operates on
standard radio frequencies, as allocat-
ed by the FCC. Even though the secu-
rity access protection code prevents
unauthorized use of your phone line, it
is possible for other radio units operat-
ing on similar frequencies within a cer-
tain area to unintentionally intercept
your conversations and/or cause inter-
ference. This lack of privacy can occur
with any cordless phone.

FEATURES
Your Radio Shack TAD-1010 900 MHz
Digital Cordless Telephone with Digital
Multi-User Answering System uses ad-
vanced analog cordless telephone
technology to give you superior audio
quality. It uses the recently allocated
900 MHz band which has less interfer-
ence and clearer sound and greater
range than 46/49 MHz cordless tele-
phones. Its cordless operation lets you
move freely about your home or office.
The Telephone Answering Device
(TAD) stores all messages on a com-
puter chip. This gives you advanced ca-
pabilities over tape-based answering
machines. For example, you can save
individual messages while the rest are
erased. Because your TAD is fully digi-
tal, there are no tape mechanisms to
wear out and no tapes to bother with.
The TAD can record messages for four
users with individual date/time stamps
for each message. The TAD’s 30-
minute memory capacity means you
can store a lot of messages!
Its remote operation features let you ac-
cess your TAD remotely from a touch-
tone phone. The TAD guides you
through system operation with voice
prompts.

Digital Volume Control — lets you ad-
just the playback volume of the record-
ings on the TAD.
Announcement Only — lets you
record an announcement for callers to
hear, without recording their messag-
es.
LCD Message Counter — shows the
number of messages the TAD has re-
corded.
Remote Operation — lets you use a
touch-tone phone (or rotary phone and
pocket tone dialer) to operate the TAD
while you are away from your home or
office.
Programmable Remote Operation
Security Code — lets you set a securi-
ty code for remote operation.
Remote Answer-On — lets you call
the TAD from a remote location and set
it to answer calls.
Call Screening — lets you listen as a
caller leaves a message so you can
decide whether or not to answer the
call.
Memo Recording — lets you leave
messages for yourself or others in your
home or office.
Adjustable Ring Number — lets you
set the TAD to answer after two or four
rings.
Flash — sends an electronic switch-
hook signal for use with special phone
services such as call waiting.
Redial — lets you quickly dial the last
number dialed.
Hold — lets you place a call on hold.
Programmable Ringer — lets you se-
lect from four ringer types and turn the
ringer on or off.
Touch-Tone (DTMF) or Pulse Dialing
— lets you use your phone with either
type of dialing.
Handset Volume Control — lets you
adjust the volume of the sound you hear
through the handset.
Hearing Aid Compatible — lets you
use this telephone with hearing aids that
have a T (telephone) switch.
TAD Features
Four User Mailboxes — let you store
and play back messages for up to four
different users. The generic mailbox
stores and plays back messages for all
users.
Date/Time Stamp — records the day
and time each message was recorded.
Digitally-Synthesized Voice — guides
you through operation of the system.

Toll-Saver — lets you avoid unneces-
sary long-distance charges when you
call by long distance to check your mes-
sages.
Phone Pick-Up Detection — stops re-
cording when you pick up any phone on
the same line as the TAD, and resets to
answer the next call.
This TAD has been tested and found to
comply with all applicable UL and FCC
standards.
Important: Cordless phones such as
this one require AC power to operate.
When AC power is off, you cannot dial
out or receive incoming calls using your
TAD-1010. For this reason, the TAD-
1010 should not be your only telephone.
To be safe, you should also have a
phone that does not require AC power to
operate (not a cordless phone) so you
can still make and receive calls if there
is an AC power failure.
For your records, we recommend you
record the TAD’s serial number here.

INSTALLATION
INSTALLING THE
BACKUP BATTERY
If the AC power fails or you unplug the
TAD-1010, a 9V backup battery (not
supplied) saves the messages and the
settings for the day, time, and security
code. We recommend you use an alka-
line battery, such as Radio Shack Cat.
No. 23-553.
Follow these steps to install the backup
battery.
Cautions:
• Before you replace the battery, be
sure the supplied adapter is
securely connected to an AC outlet
and to the jack on the back of the
TAD. Otherwise, you might lose any
stored information.
• Always use a fresh battery of the
required size and type.
• Dispose of the battery promptly and
properly. Do not bury or burn it.
1. Remove the battery compartment
cover on the bottom of the base by
sliding the cover in the direction of
the arrow.
2. Snap the battery’s contacts firmly
to the battery connector, then place
the battery into the compartment.
3. Replace the cover.
Note: If flashes after installing a
fresh backup battery, unplug the AC
adapter from the AC outlet (if connect-
ed), then reconnect it.

SELECTING A LOCATION
You can set the TAD-1010’s base on a
flat surface (such as a desktop or coun-
tertop), or mount it on a wall plate or di-
rectly on the wall. The base’s location
affects the phone’s range. If you have a
choice of several locations, try each to
see which one provides the best perfor-
mance.
Select a location that is:
• Near an AC outlet
• Near a modular telephone line jack
• Away from electrical machinery,
electrical appliances, and metal
walls or filing cabinets
• Away from wireless intercoms,
alarms, and room monitors
If the phone line jack is not a modular
jack, you must update the wiring. You
can convert the wiring yourself, using
jacks and adapters available at your lo-
cal Radio Shack store. Or, you can let
the phone company update the wiring
for you.
Notes:
• The phone company charges for
the installation of the necessary
jacks.
• The USOC number of the base-
board jack to be installed is RJ11C.
PLACING THE BASE ON A
DESKTOP
1. Plug one end of the supplied 7-foot
modular cord into the TO TEL. LINE
jack on the back of the TAD-1010’s
base.
2. Plug the modular cord’s other end
into a modular phone line jack.
3. Plug the TAD-1010’s AC cord into a
standard AC outlet.
4. For the best reception, adjust the
base’s antenna so it stands straight
up.

Using the supplied mounting bracket,
you can mount the TAD-1010’s base on
a phone jack wall plate or directly on
the wall.

To prepare the bracket for mounting,
twist off the tabs attached to the center
of the bracket and press them securely
into the holes on the narrow end of the
bracket.
Mounting on a Wall Plate
1. Plug one end of the supplied 7-inch
modular cord into the TO TEL. LINE
jack.
2. Insert the tabs on the supplied
mounting bracket into the slots on
the base’s bottom. Then press the
bracket down until it snaps into
place.
3. Press the AC cord into the top and
bottom grooves on the left side of
the bracket. Press the modular cord
TOTEL. LINE
into the center groove on the right
side of the bracket, then plug the
modular cord into the modular
phone jack.
4. Line up the keyhole slots on the
bracket with the studs on the wall
plate, then slide the base down
onto the wall plate until it is secure.
5. Press up on the handset holder to
remove it, turn it over so its tabbed
edge faces up, then press it back
down into its slot on the base.
6. Plug the TAD-1010’s AC cord into
a standard AC outlet.

7. For the best reception, adjust the
base’s antenna so it stands straight
up.
Note: If you want to remove the supplied
bracket after attaching it, simply press in
the tab on each side of the bracket and
lift the bracket away from the base.
Mounting Directly on the Wall
Using a drill (not supplied) and the sup-
plied screws and spacers, you can eas-
ily mount your TAD-1010 directly on the
wall.
1. At the desired mounting location,
drill two holes 315/16 inches apart,
one above the other.
2. Place a spacer over each screw,
then thread a screw into each wall
hole until the screw’s head extends
about 1/4inch from the wall.
3. Plug one end of the supplied 7-foot
modular cord into the TO TEL. LINE
jack.

4. Insert the tabs on the supplied

TELEPHONE PREPARATION
INSTALLING THE
HANDSET BATTERY
PACK
To install the supplied rechargeable
battery pack, place it on the battery
compartment tracks, then slide it up (to-
ward the antenna) until it locks in place.
Note: You must charge a new battery
pack at least 24 hours before you use it
the first time. See “Charging the Hand-
set Battery Pack” on Page 14.
When the handset’s battery pack no
longer recharges, replace the battery
pack. You can order a replacement bat-
tery pack from your local Radio Shack
store.
To remove the battery pack, press the
tab on the back of the handset, slide the
battery pack down (away from the an-
tenna) until it stops, then lift it up to re-
move it.
Note: The phone uses a rechargeable
nickel-cadmium battery pack. At the
end of the battery pack’s useful life, it
must be recycled or disposed of proper-
ly. Contact your local, county, or state
hazardous waste management authori-
ties for information on recycling or dis-
posal programs in your area. Some
options that might be available are: mu-
nicipal curbside collection, drop-off box-
es at retailers, recycling collection
centers, and mailback programs.

CHARGING THE
HANDSET BATTERY
PACK
You must charge the battery pack at
least 24 hours before you use the TAD-
1010 the first time or when you replace
the battery pack. To charge or recharge
the battery pack, simply place the hand-
set on the cradle. The CHARGE indica-
tor lights.
Notes:
• If the CHARGE indicator does not
light or blinks continuously when
you place the handset on the cra-
dle, be sure the battery pack and
AC adapter are correctly and
securely connected. Also, check the
charging contacts on both the hand-
set and base. If the contacts are
dirty or tarnished, clean them with a
pencil eraser.
• If the handset is charged, and the
AC adapter is unplugged from the
AC outlet or the AC outlet loses
power, the handset beeps intermit-
tently until power is restored to the
base and the security access-
protection code is reset. To turn off
the handset sooner so it stops
beeping, press TONE ,
#, or any
number key (0-9).

• If the base loses AC power and the
handset is away from the base,
place the handset on the base for a
few seconds after AC power is
restored. This resets the security
access-protection code.
You can recharge the battery pack at
any time, but you must be sure to re-
charge the battery pack when the hand-
set’s PRIVACY/LOW BATT indicator
lights.
If the battery pack will not hold a
charge, replace it. We recommend you
replace the battery pack about once a
year.
Notes:
• The first time you use your phone
after charging a new or completely
discharged battery pack, the hand-
set might not work or it might
sound an error tone when you
press
TALK. If this happens, return
the handset to the base for about 5
seconds, then try again.

• About once a month, fully dis-
charge the battery pack. Otherwise,
it will lose its ability to fully
recharge, and you might have to
recharge and replace it more often.
To fully discharge the battery pack,
keep the handset off the cradle until
PRIVACY/LOW BATT turns on.
Then return the handset to the base
and fully recharge the battery pack.
• Some deeply discharged batteries
take longer to charge. If overnight
charging is not sufficient, try charg-
ing for up to 48 hours.
SETTING THE PULSE/
TONE SWITCH
Set PULSE/TONE for the type of service
you have. If you are not sure which type
you have, do this test.
1. Set PULSE/TONE on the side of the
base to TONE.
2. Press TALK on the handset and lis-
ten for a dial tone.
3. Press any number other than 0.
Note: If you must dial an access
code (9, for example) to connect to
an outside line, do not enter the
access code either.
If the dial tone stops, you have
touch tone service. Leave PULSE/
TONE set to TONE.
If the tone continues, you have
pulse service. Set PULSE/TONE to
PULSE.
4. To hang up, either place the hand-
set on the cradle or press OFF on
the handset.
SETTING THE
TELEPHONE RINGER
Follow these steps to select the tele-
phone ringer sound. You can choose
from four different rings.

2. Press PROG. The TALK indicator
flashes.
3. Press
#.
Note: If you do not complete Steps
2 and 3 within 30 seconds, the tele-
phone exits this procedure. Start
again from Step 2.
4. Press 1, 2, 3, or 4to hear each
ringer sound.
5. When you hear the ringer sound
you want, press OFF to exit. The
TALK indicator turns off.
Checking the Ringer
Follow these steps to check the select-
ed ringer sound.
1. Press PROG. The TALK indicator
flashes.
2. Press
#.
3. Press 0. The phone rings once.
4. Press OFF to exit. The TALK indica-
tor turns off.

Turning Off the Ringer
Follow these steps to turn off the hand-
set ringer.
1. Press PROG. The TALK indicator
flashes.
2. Within 30 seconds, press #.
3. Press 5.
4. Press OFF to exit. The TALK indi-
cator turns off.
Note: The IN USE and TALK indicators
still flash to indicate an incoming call
when the ringer is turned off.

TELEPHONE OPERATION
Important: If you move the handset out-
side the base’s range, the handset will
not operate properly and a call in
progress might be disconnected (see
“Troubleshooting” on Page 32).
ANSWERING/MAKING
A CALL
To answer a call, if the handset is on
the base, simply lift the handset and be-
gin your conversation.
To answer a call if the handset is not on
the base, press any key on the handset
(except OFF) before speaking.
Notes:
• Both the IN USE indicator on the
base and the TALK indicator on the
handset flash when you receive a
call and light steadily while the
handset is in use.
• If the handset’s ringer is turned on
and you press OFF while the hand-
set is ringing, the handset’s ringer
turns off for that call only, then it
automatically turns on when the
next call comes in.
To make a call, pick up the handset and
press TALK. When the IN USE indicator
lights steadily and you hear a dial tone,
dial the desired phone number or mem-
ory number (see “Memory Operation”
on Page 20).
Notes:
• Before you get a dial tone, there
might be a slight delay while the
TAD-1010 searches through its 10
channels to find a clear channel.
While the phone searches, the
TALK indicator on the handset
blinks.
• If you hear a short buzz when you
press TALK, or the PRIVACY/LOW
BATT indicator flashes, the handset
batteries need recharging.
To end a call, place the handset on the
base, press TALK again, or press OFF
on the handset.
ADJUSTING THE
HANDSET’S VOLUME
To adjust the handset’s volume up or
down during a call, press or on
the side of the handset.

USING REDIAL
To redial the last number dialed, lift the
handset, press TALK to get a dial tone,
then press REDIAL. The phone auto-
matically dials the last number dialed.
USING PRIVACY
To talk to someone else in the room
without the person on the other end of
the phone hearing your conversation,
press PRIVACY. The PRIVACY/LOW
BATT indicator on the handset lights
steadily. The person on the other end
cannot hear you, but you can hear con-
versation on the other end.
Press PRIVACY again to resume your
phone conversation. The PRIVACY/
LOW BATT indicator turns off.

USING HOLD
To place a call on hold, press HOLD.
The TALK indicator flashes to remind
you that the call is on hold.
To take a call off hold and resume your
conversation, press TALK. The TALK
indicator lights steadily.
USING FLASH
You can use FLASH to produce a
switchhook signal for special phone
services, such as call waiting. If you
have call waiting, press FLASH to take
an incoming call without disconnecting
the current call. Press FLASH again to
return to the first call.

phone services, pressing FLASH might
disconnect the current call.
USING TONE SERVICES
ON A PULSE LINE
If you have pulse service, you can tem-
porarily switch to sending tone signals
for banking services or computer trans-
actions.
Dial the service’s phone number as
usual, then simply press TONE at the
appropriate place in the call to change
to tone dialing. Further key presses pro-
duce tone signals.
The phone automatically resets to use
pulse dialing when you hang up.
USING PAGE
The PAGE button lets you page some-
one in your home or office and helps
you locate the handset when it is away
from the base.
1. Press PAGE on the base. The
handset rings.
Note: PAGE still works even when
the ringer is turned off.
2. Press OFF on the handset or PAGE
on the base to cancel the paging
tone.
CHANGING CHANNELS
The TAD-1010 continuously scans 10
channels (frequency pairs used be-
tween the base and the handset) and
automatically selects a clear channel
each time you make or receive a call us-
ing the handset.
If you notice interference when using
your handset, press CH to switch to a
clear channel.
Note: You cannot change channels
when a call is on hold.

MEMORY OPERATION
You can store up to 10 phone numbers
in the TAD-1010’s memory, then quickly
dial them.
Note: Each phone number can be up to
16 digits long.
Storing a Number in Memory
1. Press OFF on the handset.
2. Press PROG. The TALK indicator
flashes.
3. Press the number (0–9) of the mem-
ory location where you want to store
the phone number.
Note: If you do not complete Steps
2 and 3 within 30 seconds, the tele-
phone exits this procedure. Start
again from Step 2.
4. Using the handset, dial the number
you want to store.
Notes:
• To store the last number dialed,
press REDIAL.
• For security purposes, we recom-
mend that you do not store pri-
vate numbers, such as personal
identification numbers or pass-
words.
• If you have pulse service and
want to use tone dialing, press
TONE at the appropriate place
in the number sequence.
• To store one or more pauses in
the memory number, see “Stor-
ing a Pause in Memory” on
Page 21.
• Each pause or TONE entry
counts as one memory digit.
5. Press MEM (memory) to store the
number in memory. The phone
rings once.
Note: If you hear a long buzzing
tone, the number is not stored.
Repeat the procedure.
Repeat this procedure for each number
you want to store.
Notes:
• To change or replace a stored
number, simply enter a new num-
ber in its place.
• To erase a number from memory,
repeat this procedure, but skip
Step 4.
