SAFETY SYMBOLS
The following symbols are laced on some com onents of the system to alert the
user to otential hazards.
WARNING: Electric Shock Hazard - To reduce risk of injury from
electric shock hazards; do not o en this com onent.
WARNING: Contains No User or Field Serviceable Parts - To reduce risk
of injury from electric shock hazards; do not o en this com onent.
WARNING: Hot Surface or Com onent - To reduce risk of injury from a
hot com onent; allow the surface to cool before touching.
WARNING: Insert Network Interface Only - Any rece tacle (e.g. RJ45
marked with this symbol indicates a network interface connection. To
reduce the risk of electric shock, fire or damage to equi ment, do not
lug tele hone or telecommunications connectors into this rece tacle.
WARNING: This symbol, on ower su lies or systems, that the
equi ment is su lied by multi le sources of ower. To reduce the risk
of injury from electric shock, remove all ower cords to com letely
ower down the system.
WARNING: This symbol indicates that the com onent exceeds the

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Technician Notes
Only authorized technicians should attem t to re air this
equi ment.
Before installing this system, carefully read all the manuals
included with the system.
All re air rocedures allow only module re lacement. Because of
the com lexity of the individual boards and sub-assemblies, no
one should attem t to make re airs at the com onent level or
make modifications to any rinted wiring board. Im ro er re airs
can create a safety hazard.
To reduce the risk of ersonal injury from electric shock and
hazardous energy levels, do not exceed the level of re airs
s ecified in these rocedures.
The system is designed to be electrically grounded. To ensure
ro er o eration, lug the AC ower cord into a ro erly grounded
AC outlet only.
Electrostatic Discharge Precautions
Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage static sensitive devices
or micro circuitry. Pro er ackaging and grounding techniques are
required to revent damage.
Kee electrostatic-sensitive arts in their containers until they
arrive at a static free work area.
Use a wrist stra connected to the work surface as well as
ro erly grounded tools and equi ment.
Kee the area free of nonconductive materials such as ordinary
lastic tools and foam ackaging.
Avoid touching ins, leads, or circuitry.
Always lace drives with rinted circuit board (PCB) assembly-side
down.
9

AS316 / AS316S User Guide
Gras cards and boards by the edges. Hold drives by the frame.
Avoid touching the solder joints or ins.
If you need to lay the device down while it is out of the antistatic
bag, lay it on the antistatic bag. Before icking it u again, touch
the antistatic bag and the metal frame of the system unit at the
same time.
Rack Warnings
If you lan to rack mount this roduct, lease follow the rack
manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Install the enclosure only in a rack that has been ro erly secured
in an area with suitable environmental conditions.
Have someone assist you during hysical installation.
To ro erly ventilate the system, you must rovide at least 7.6 cm
of clearance at the front and back of the system.
To reduce the risk of ersonal injury or damage to equi ment,
always ensure that the rack is adequately stabilized rior to
extending a com onent outside the rack. A rack may become
unstable if more than one com onent is extended. Extend only
one at a time.
Do not stand or ste on any com onents in the rack.
If installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the o erating
ambient tem erature of the rack environment may be greater
than room ambient. Therefore, consideration should be given to
installing the equi ment in an environment com atible with the
maximum ambient tem erature (Tma) s ecified by the
manufacturer.
Do no overload the AC ower su ly branch circuit that rovides
ower to the rack. Observe extension cable and ower stri
ratings. Ensure that the total am ere rating of all equi ment
lugged into the extension cable or ower stri does not exceed
80 ercent of the am ere ratings limit for the extension cable or
ower stri .

System Warnings
Avoid dust, humidity, and extreme tem eratures; lace the
system on a stable surface.
To reduce the risk of ersonal injury from hot surfaces, allow the
hot- lug disk modules and other system modules to cool before
touching them.
To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to the equi ment,
do not disable the ower cord grounding lug. The grounding lug
is an im ortant safety feature.
Ensure the ower cord is inserted into a grounded electrical outlet
that is easily accessible at all times. Un lug the ower cord from
the ower su ly module to shut off ower to the equi ment.
Protect the storage system from ower fluctuations and tem orary
ower interru tions with a regulating uninterru tible ower su ly
(UPS). This device rotects the hardware from damage caused by
ower surges and voltage s ikes and kee s the system
o erational during a ower failure.
The storage system must always be o erated with all hot lug
modules installed or slot covers in lace to ensure ro er cooling.
Route ower cords so that they will not be walked on or inched
by items laces u on or against them. Pay articular attention to
the lug, electrical outlet, and the oint where the cords exit from
the roduct.

Communications Commission Notice
Part 15 of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Rules and Regulations
has established Radio Frequency (RF) emission limits to rovide an interference-free
radio frequency s ectrum. Many electronic devices, including com uters, generate
RF energy incidental to their intended function and are, therefore, covered by these
rules. These rules lace com uters and related eri heral devices into two classes, A
and B, de ending u on their intended installation. Class A devices are those that
may reasonably be ex ected to be installed in a business or commercial
environment. Class B devices are those that may reasonably be ex ected to be
installed in a residential environment (for exam le, ersonal com uters). The FCC
requires devices in both classes to bear a label indicating the interference otential
of the device, as well as additional o erating instruction for the user.
The rating label on the device shows which class (A or B) the equi ment falls into.
Class A devices do not have an FCC logo or FCC ID on the label. Class B devices
have an FCC logo or FCC ID on the label. Once the class of the device is determined,
refer to the following corres onding statement.
Class A Equipment
This equi ment has been assembled with com onents that com ly with the limits for
a Class A digital device, ursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are
designed to rovide reasonable rotection against harmful interference when the
equi ment is o erated in a commercial environment. This equi ment generates,
uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in
accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio
communications. O eration of this equi ment in a residential area is likely to cause
harmful interference, in which case the user will be required to correct the
interference at ersonal ex ense.
Declaration of Conformity for Products arked with the FCC Logo - United
States Only
This device com lies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules O eration and is subject to the
following two conditions: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference that
may cause undesired o eration. For questions regarding your roduct, lease
contact your sales re resentative.
