Introducing RAY
This chapter i troduces RAY’s fu ctio ality, the services that it provides a d the
A droid Smartpho e platform o which it ru s.
What is RAY?
RAY is a i tegrated portable system desig ed to assist the commu ity of visually
impaired people a d their families i their daily life. RAY leverages the latest
mobility tech ologies to i crease i depe de ce, e rich social life a d improve
accessibility of esse tial services for the visually impaired.
The RAY mobile system provides a u ique user i terface o a A droid platform
that is especially desig ed for the visually impaired. Its special desig a d
fu ctio ality e able o -sighted users to i teract with it by touchi g its scree ,
use a built-i or attached keypad, feeli g vibratio s a d liste i g to sou ds.
RAY is available as a sta dalo e applicatio you ca dow load a d i stall o a y
A droid device (OS versio 4.2 a d above). It is also available o a umber of
differe t smartpho es models, pre-co figured for out-of-a-box experie ce.

The RAY devices are available to buy over the I ter et at Project Ray web site,
Amazo a d eBay; or from local distributers as listed o Project Ray website.
For simplicity purpose, all device related examples a d descriptio s are related to
the RAY N5 device which is based o Google Nexus 5. Applicatio capabilities a d
scree images are similar across all models a d devices.

The RAY Device
A typical RAY pho e i cludes ON/OFF butto , Volume Co trol, Touch scree , Earpho e port,
Chargi g port, Speakers a d Camera le ses. I additio , several RAY models like the RAY E5
a d the RAY L5 i cludes physical keypads for alpha umeric data e try a d avigatio keys.
The positio of those keys o each device is differe t.
O the RAY N5 (based o Nexus 5) device -
The Power key is located o the top right side.
The Volume key is located o the top left side.
The Earpho e port is o the top side.
The Chargi g port is at the bottom side of the device.
Hold the pho e i the palm of either ha d so that the tip of your i dex fi ger is
touchi g the top of the device. The camera le ses hole should be faci g your ha d
o the back of the pho e.

ON/OFF Button: The O /Off butto is a small physical key located o the
top, right or left side of your device. A short press starts or e ds power savi g
(sleep) mode. A lo g press displays the Power me u from which you ca tur
the device off, retur to the Home me u, dial a emerge cy umber a d
more. You may refer to the

Touch Screen: The glass surface o the fro t of RAY reacts to your touch,
fi ger moveme ts a d fi ger gestures, as described i the
I troduci g the

Volume Control: The Volume co trol is a large physical key with Volume up
a d Volume dow directio s, located o the top, right or left side of your
device. Press the top of this co trol to i crease volume, or the bottom of this
co trol to decrease volume.
•
Earphone Input Port: This is o the top, ce ter of the pho e.
•
Charger Input Port: This mi i USB co ector is sta dard with all A droid
based devices a d ca be co ected to a PC or electric outlet. It is fou d o
the side of the device towards the bottom.

Remote RAY Support
RAY co ects to both cellular a d Wi-Fi etworks just like a y other sta dard
Smartpho es. RAY must be co ected to the I ter et i order to provide remote
services, i cludi g:

Your Personal RAY Management Page: RAY automatically creates a
perso alized web page for ma agi g the RAY device through the I ter et from
a y computer. You, or a y perso that you authorize, ca the use a user
ame a d password to remotely perform a variety of fu ctio s o the RAY
device, i cludi g the followi g:

Your perso al RAY ma ageme t page ca be accessed from the RAY web
page at www.project-ray.com by selecti g the Login optio (located i the top
right cor er of the Home page). To e ter, you will eed u ique user ame
assig ed to the device a d password which is set by default to be “12345678”.
The user-id of your device, a d your life-lo g ide tity i the RAY etwork, is
visible to a sighted perso as a stri g i the form of a email address
displayed at the bottom of the HOME MENU. It is also available as a voice
a ou ceme t i the ‘Setti g & I formatio ’ me u item.
After ope i g the RAY system for the first time, you will receive a welcome
message, i cludi g crede tials a d access li ks to your email address.
•
Remote Visual Assistance – “Eye-Assist”: RAY also provides a remote
visual assista ce service that e ables family members a d desig ated sighted
people to remotely co trol the device, locate its positio o a map, a d view
the video stream a d camera images for a full remote assista ce. To provide
the support, a sighted perso should dow load the matchi g applicatio
available i Google Play Store whe searchi g for “RAY Eye Assist”
(https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ray.remoteassista ce ).
•
Automatic Backup and Restore: RAY is registered with your u ique user
ame a d password. The system automatically backs up a d stores the
curre t state of your RAY device through the I ter et every few seco ds. This
i cludes all your data, appoi tme ts, co tacts a d setti gs o your RAY. If
somethi g happe s to your RAY, you ca restore a ew RAY device with all
your latest i formatio by simply loggi g i to a ew RAY device with your
user ame a d password.

Whe RAY’s battery level is low, it says Low Battery. You may refer to

I order to e able the remote co trol of the RAY device a d the automatic backup
a d storage of your RAY data, the RAY requires a co ectio to a cellular etwork.
This co ectio is available by simply subscribi g to I ter et access with your local
cell pho e provider.
Note
Dow loadi g music, periodicals a d books from the library may require
sig ifica t amou ts of ba dwidth, which may use up your data package.
Therefore, RAY requires a Wi-Fi etwork i order to dow load books a d
music. Other o -li e co ected tools like remote assista ce ca use Wi-Fi or
3G co ectio s.
Wi-Fi ca be set up usi g the Settings optio i the More Me u, as
described i the

RAY is especially desig ed for o -sighted users a d therefore its i terface
works differe tly tha a regular Touch-Scree Based, Smartpho e device.
The most importa t thi g to lear about RAY is that basic operatio is do e by
putti g your fi ger somewhere i the ce ter of the scree , the slide your
fi ger o the scree i the direction of the optio that you wa t to select.

your fi ger to select a d execute that optio .
You do not select things by tapping an icon.
Making a Call
I order to familiarize you with RAY’s special i terface, the followi g guides you
through maki g your first pho e call to someo e i your Co tacts List. For this
purpose, RAY is provided with a si gle co tact perso already defi ed i the
Co tacts List. For example, the pho e umber of a directory service or the Library
for the Bli d.

Tip
If you are ot sure where you are o the RAY device, the simply press a d
hold your fi ger o its scree (somewhere ear the ce ter) for three
seco ds. The Ray device the says the ame of the scree you are i .

A quick way back to the Home Me u is to:
1 O RAY N5 device, lo g press the ON/OFF butto . RAY says Power
Menu. The HOME scree optio is located at key umber 4 o the left.

2 From the Home Me u, place your fi ger somewhere i the middle of the
scree . Wherever you put your fi ger becomes the umber 5 o a regular
umeric keypad.
3 Slide your fi ger o the scree (without lifti g it) upwards towards the umber

your fi ger off the scree :

select it. RAY will the i itiate a telepho e call to the selected perso a d says
the ame of the perso that you are calli g.
If the call is a swered, a sta dard 12-key umeric keypad appears, as show
below. This keypad stays ope duri g the e tire call.

The followi g describes how to e ter a umber for a y reaso . For example, to
dial a pho e umber or as a DTMF (mea i g to e ter umbers i the middle of a
call if requested to do so by the callee).
Note

e abli g you to type a umber, as described o page 21.
To enter a number:
1 Whe a umeric keypad is ope (for example, as described o the previous
page), place your fi ger somewhere ear the ce ter of the scree . Wherever
you place your fi ger becomes the ce ter of the 12-key umeric keypad,
mea i g the umber 5.

2 RAY the says 5. To select the umber 5, simply lift your fi ger off the scree .
To select a differe t digit, slide your fi ger, without lifti g it, i the directio of
that umber u til RAY says the i te ded umber.
3 Whe RAY says the i te ded umber, lift your fi ger to select it.
For example:
To select the umber 2, place your fi ger o the scree a d the slide it
slightly upwards.
To select the umber 6, place your fi ger o the scree a d the slide it
to the right.
