Raymarineequipmentand accessoriesconformtothe appropriateElectromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC) regulationsfor use in therecreationalmarine environment.
Correctinstallation is required toensure that EMC performance isnot compromised.
Alwayschecktheinstallationbeforegoingtoseatomakesurethatitisnotaffectedby
radiotransmissions, engine starting orother forms of interference.
To do this:
1. Turn on all transmittingequipment (radar, VHF radio, etc).
2. Checkthatallelectronicsystemsareunaffectedbyinterferencefromthetransmit-
tingequipment.
WARNING: Product installation & operation
This equipment must be installed, commissioned and operated in
accordance with the Raymarine instructions provided. Failure to
do so could result in personal injury, damage to your boat and/or
poor product performance. Before you install the SPX SmartPilot
system, check that individual components are the correct voltage
for your boat’s supply.
CAUTION: Ascorrectperformanceoftheboat’ssteeringiscritical
for safety, we
STRONGLY RECOMMEND that an Authorized
Raymarine Service Representative fits this product. You will only
receive full warranty benefits if you can show that an Authorized
Raymarine Service Representative has installed and
commissioned this product.

installing this product.
WARNING: Navigational safety
Although we have designed this product to be accurate and
reliable, many factors can affect its performance. Therefore, it
should serve only as an aid tonavigationand should never replace
commonsense and navigational judgement. Always maintain a
permanent watch so you can respond to situations as they
develop.

EMC installation guidelines
Raymarineequipmentand accessoriesconformtothe appropriateElectromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC) regulations.This minimizeselectromagneticinterference
between equipment,which could otherwiseaffect theperformanceof your system.
Correctinstallation is required toensure that EMC performance isnot compromised.
Foroptimum EMCperformance,wemakethefollowingrecommendations:
• PlaceRaymarineequipmentandcablesatleast3ft(1m)fromanyequipmentthat
transmits,or cablesthatcarry, radio signalsfromVHF radios, cablesand anten-
nas. In thecase ofSSB radios, thedistance should be increased to7 ft. (2m).
• PlaceRaymarine equipment andcables more than 7 ft (2m) fromthe path of a
radarbeam.Aradarbeamcannormallybeassumedtospread20degreesabove
and below the radiating element.
• Use apower sourceseparate from that used forengine-start. This isimportant to
preventerraticbehavioranddatalosswhichcanoccuriftheengine-startdoesnot
havea separate battery.
• UseRaymarine-specifiedcables.
• Do not cut orextend cables unlessdoing sois detailedin the installationmanual.
Remember
Where constraints onthe installation prevent any ofthe aboverecommendations:
• Alwaysallowthemaximumseparationpossiblebetweendifferentitemsofelectri-
calequipment.
Thiswill providethe bestconditionsfor good EMC performance ofthe installation.
Suppression ferrites
Raymarine cables may befittedwith suppressionferrites. These arenecessary for
correct EMC performance. Anyferrite removed during installation must bereplaced
assoonasinstallationis complete.
Use only ferrites of the correct type, suppliedby Raymarine authorized dealers.
Connections to other equipment
If Raymarineequipment is tobe connectedto other equipmentusinga cable not
supplied byRaymarine,a Raymarine suppression ferrite MUST always be attached
to thecable nearthe Raymarine unit.
General cabling guidelines
• Do not mix AC and DC cables.
• Adhere to EMC guidelines(above).
• UseCopexconduitwhereappropriatetoprotectcables.
• Labelall cablesfor easy identification.
• Keep fluxgatecompasscable separate fromother cables.

1.1 Installation overview
There are two key stagesto successful installation of your SPX SmartPilot System:
planning and installation .
Planning
Carefulplanningwill ensurethe autopilot system is correctly configured and
connected in conjunction with your vessel’s widerelectronicssystem.To helpyou
plan,readthroughthe wholeofthisguidebeforebeginningtoinstallyourSPX
SmartPilot system.The key steps tothe planningprocess are asfollows:

In a SeaTalkngsystem,componentsareconnected to the SeaTalkng backbone cable
usingspurcables.
• Spurcablesshouldbekeptshorttokeepcomponentsasclosetothebackboneas
possible.
• TheST70autopilotcontrollerissuppliedwitha400mmspurcable,whichmaybe
extendedifnecessary.However, itis preferabletoextendthebackbonesothe
connectionpointis within400mm ofthe location ofthe controller.
• The SPX SmartPilot is connected to the backbone usinga plug-in cable (sup-
plied).
• Instrumentscanbeconnectedviaspurcablesordaisy-chainedtogetheronabus.
• The SeaTalkng backbone cableis available as part of a standard kit.
