1.1 Introduction
How this Handbook is organised
Thishandbook describes theRayChart420 Chartplotter.
Thehandbook is organised asfollows:
Chapter1- Overview (this chapter) provides anoverview of the featuresand
functionsof the RayChart 420Chartplotter. You should readthis chapter to
familiarise yourself with the chartplotter.

explains how to start using the chartplotter.

General
TheRayChart 420 Chartplotteris waterproof and canbe installed either above
orbelowdeck. The equipment comprises:
•6 inLCDdisplaywithChartholdercompartmentforaNavionics®Nav-Chart
electronic chart card
•GPSreceiver (RC420) or Differential/GPS(dGPS) receiver (RC420D)
TheRayChart 420 Chartplotter can outputGPSand Waypoint data (SOG and
COG)to operate with otherequipment,eg. an autopilot or repeaterinstrument
connectedvia the NMEA 0183 interface.
1.2 The chartplotter display
Display functions
The RayChart 420 Chartplotter includes the following functions:
•Create,Place, Move, Edit orErasea Waypoint.
•GoTo Waypoint, Port, Facility or Cursor.
•Create,Save,Name,EditorFollowa Route.
•ReviewRouteandWaypointLists.
•Displayvessel’strack on-screen; Convert a track toaroute(SmartRoute).
•SetUpAlarmsandTimers.
•ManOverBoard(MOB) to navigate back to a missingperson orobject.
•Satellite acquisition data (including a Differential GPS Setup page).
•Usespositionalinformation from GPS (RC420) or dGPS(RC420D) to
display vessel’s position.
•Thedisplayandkeyscanbeilluminated for night-time use.
Thechartplotter includes a 64nmworldmap that can be usedforroute planning.
DetailednavigationinformationisdisplayedwhenaNavionics®Nav-Chart
card is installed.
Yourvessel’sposition is shown as a boat symbol pointingin yourcurrent
direction.
Atthe top ofthe chartplotter screen astatus bar displays chartscale, cursor
positionplus range and bearing, the vessel’s position, Speed Over Ground
(SOG)andCourseOverGround(COG).
Waypointsyouhave placed are displayed and thecurrentrouteis shown. Data
can be viewed for current route or chart object.

The chartplotter screen can also show additional information, depending on
yourcurrently selected options, setup selections and data availablefrom other
equipment.
Anexample chart display inits default configuration, with achart card
installed, is shown in Section1.3,Operating controls.
Severalfunctions are availableto control the displayas follows:
•Zoomin/out
•PantheDisplay.
•Centre the Chart around the Vessel.
Operation of these functions is describedin Chapter 2.
Display options
Displayoptionsare selected in System Set UpandChartSet Up as described in
Chapter 4.
1.3 Operating controls
The chartplotter is operated by means of the following controls:
•Atrackpadprovidingup, down, left, right and diagonal controlof anon-
screen cursor.
•Sixdedicated push-button (labelled) keys.
•Pop-upmenus,displayed on-screen, from which you select options.
•Databaselists,displayed on-screen, which enable you to edititems.
Note:The cursor is the cross-hairsymbol (+) visible onthedisplay. You move
thecursor with the trackpadanduse it to selectaposition or item onthechart.
Thecontrols are shown inthe following illustration. Theyare back-lit for night-
timeuse.
The following paragraphs describe the controls and on-screen facilities.

Trackpad and cursor
The trackpad has several functions:
•Tomove the cursor aroundthechart screen.
•Toselectanitem from a pop-up menu or databaselist.
•To adjust a control setting.
•Toenter names in databaselists .
Pressthecorresponding edge of the trackpad to movethecursor horizontally,
verticallyordiagonally; the longer you press,thefasterthe cursor moves. The
currentcursor position is shownin the status bar atthe top of thescreen.
Note:Duringmany operations you cannot move thecursoraroundthescreen,
eg.whilst a function baris displayed, the cursoris used exclusively for
selection.
The cursor is used to:
•Select a position on the chart.
•Select,accessand,ifvalid,move an item, eg. a waypoint, on the chart.
•Panthe chart display.

Thecursoris context-sensitive. Some items on thescreen, suchas waypoints
andchart objects have information associatedwiththem. When you placethe
cursorover such objects, theinformationis displayed in thestatusbar. In
addition,a function bar is displayedforcertainitems. For example, when you
placethe cursor over a waypoint,thewaypointdata is displayed in thestatusbar
andthe waypoint options functionisdisplayed.
Dedicated keys
Thesekeyshavefixedfunctions.Somekeyscanbeusedintwoways:
•Press:Press the key momentarily andthenrelease it. This method is usedfor
mostkey operations.
•Pressandhold: Press thekeyand hold it down fortheperiod of time stated
(eg. 3seconds), then release it.
Whenyoupress a dedicated key, one ofthe followingoccurs:
1. Theassociatedoperationis actioned, eg. change chart scale(RANGE key).
2. Apop-upmenuisdisplayed,providingfurther options.
3. Asetof functions is displayed.
Asyoupress a key, a single audio beep confirms thekeyaction.Ifthekey-press
isnot valid for thecurrent screen or mode, threerapid beeps sound toindicate
thatnoresponse is available. If required,you canturnthekey beeps off as part
of your set up procedure(see Chapter 4).
Function bar
Thefunction bar at thebottom of the screencontainsa number of functions
whichchange according to thecurrent operation. The functionsare grouped
intorelated sets andsubsetsproviding access to thevarious functions. The
primaryfunctionbarisdisplayed when you press the ENTER key.
Thecurrentlyselectedfunction is highlighted by means of a greybackground.
Whenyouinvoke a function, one ofthe followingoccurs:
1. Theassociatedoperation is actioned, eg.GOTOWAYPOINT.
2. Asub-setoffunctions is displayed.
3. Apop-upmenuisdisplayed,providingfurther options.
4. The appropriate database list (route or waypoint) is displayed.
Aswithdedicatedkeys,whenyouinvoketheaction,asingleaudio beep
confirmsthe action. If the selectionisnot valid for thecurrentscreen or mode,
threerapid beeps indicate invalid action. Ifrequired,you can turn the keybeeps
off as part ofyour set up procedure (see Chapter 4).

Pop-up menus
Pop-upmenususually provide various options. When a pop-up menu is
on-screen,a set of associatedfunctionsis also displayed.
Usethe trackpad to select anoption fromthemenu, then use the appropriate
functionto set the option, eg.youcan specify the radius ofthewaypoint arrival
alarmandyou can set selected navigation dataon/off.
Database lists
Thewaypoints and routesthat you create onthe chartplotter are storedin
databaselists. You can view theselistsand select items forediting.
Aswithpop-upmenus, when a database list is on-screen,a setof associatedsoft
keysisalso displayed; use the trackpadto selectanitemfrom the list, then use
theappropriate function to edit theitem,eg.you can erase awaypointora route.

2.1 Introduction
This chapter provides information, instructions and a simple exercise to allow
youtopractice using the RayChart 420 Chartplotter.Itisintended to help you
becomefamiliar with thecontrolsbefore you startusing the chartplotter for
routine navigation.
Note:There is often morethanone method of performing aparticular task.
Normaloperatingproceduresare detailed in Chapter 3. When you become
familiarwith the system youcanadapt these procedures to suityourmethod of
operation.
Conventions used
Throughoutthis handbook, the dedicated(labelled)keys are shown in bold
capitals;for example, ENTER. The functions andoptionsare shown in normal
capitals,eg.LIGHT.
Operatingprocedures,whichmayconsistofasinglekey-press,ora sequence of
numberedsteps,areindicatedbya ä symbolinthemargin.
Whentextual data is displayed onscreen,anyunavailable data is shown as
dashes,one per character.
Whereprocedures refer toSelect,thisimplies using the trackpadtohighlight a
function,then pressing the ENTERkey to action that function.
Simulator
TheChartplotter display unit includesasimulator mode, which allows youto
practiceoperating your chartplotter without datafromaGPS system. You will
need to usethe set up optionsto switch the displayto simulator mode, as
described in Section2.2, Switching on/off. You can useitin either of twoways:
•Beforethe chartplotter has been installedon yourvessel.In this case, you
onlyneed to connect theChartplotterdisplay unit to a12V dcpower supply,
fusedat 1A, connecting the redcorefrom the power lead topositive(+) and
the black core tonegative (-); see Chapter 5for fulldetails.
•Afterthe chartplotter has beeninstalled on your vessel,but while in the
marinaor at anchor.
