All Raymarine equipment and accessories are designed tothe best
industry standardsfor usein the recreational marineenvironment.The
design and manufacture of Raymarine equipment and accessories
conform to the appropriate Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)
standards, but correct installation is required to ensure that performance
is not compromised.

1.1 Satellite Differential GPS on the Raystar 120
TheRaystar 120 Satellite DifferentialGPS(SD-GPS) Receiveruses the
new satellite differential system to improve the accuracy, integrity and
availabilityof the basicGPS signals. This providesgreater positional
accuracy compared with standard GPS receivers (e.g. Raystar112LP).
Threeseparate andcompatibleSD-GPS systems currentlyexistor are
beingdeveloped:
1. WideAreaAugmentationSystem (WAAS),developed by the
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
2. European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS),
beingdevelopedby a Europeanconsortium.
3. MTSAT Satellite-BasedAugmentationSystem(MSAS),being
developed bythe JapanCivilAviationBureau (JCAB).
1.2 SD-GPS in North America (WAAS)
How SD-GPS works
The following description is based on WAAS, butthe same principles
applyto the EGNOSand MSASnetworks.
AsshowninFigure 1-1, the WAAS network consists of:
• groundreferencestations acrossthe USA
• master stations located at East Coast and West Coast
• two geostationary satellites located above the equator
Thisnetwork operatesin conjunctionwiththe existingGPSsatellites.
Thegroundreferencestationsarelocatedatknownpositionsandreceive
datacontinuouslyfromtheGPSsatellites.The groundreferencestations
transmit their datato themasterstations,whichcalculatetheerrorofthe
GPS-received positionsand generate correctional data.
Themasterstationssendtheircorrected‘differential’signalstothetwo
geostationarysatellites whichbroadcast thecorrected data onthe
standardGPS frequency.

YourRaystar 120SD-GPSReceivercanthenusethiscorrectionaldatato
refine the GPSpositional data it receives. This results in improved
accuracy (typically less than 3 metres) comparedwith standard GPS
(typically 15 m) or land-based DGPS (typically 10 m).
Availability of WAAS in North America
TheareacoverageofWAASincludestheentireUnitedStatesofAmerica
(see Figure1-2).

At thetime of goingtoprint,WAASwasbeing testedfor aviationuse.
During thistesting andcertification period, continuousservice is
expected although brief signal outages may occuras refinementsand
upgrades are made to the system.

1.3 SD-GPS coverage outside North America
As well as being WAAS compatible, the Raystar120 is alsocompatible
with the SD-GPS networks being developed for Europe (EGNOS) and
Asia (MSAS). The combination of theWAAS, EGNOS and MSAS
systems will provide global satellitebased differential GPS
augmentation into the future.
Europe (EGNOS)
Atthetimeofgoingtoprint,EGNOSwasinearlytestingand
qualification phases. As a result, signal outages may occurat any time.
The statusof EGNOSand any plannedoutagesare available on-line at
the Raymarine website:
http://www.raymarine.com
Satellite differential is currently disabled outside the WAAS reception
area. When EGNOS is qualified for navigational use, we will publish a
procedure on the Raymarine website to enable EGNOS operation.
Asia (MSAS)
An Asiansatellitedifferentialsystem(MSAS)isalso beingdeveloped.
When MSASis qualifiedfor navigational use, we will publish a
procedure on the Raymarine website to enable MSASoperation.
1.4 Accuracy & continuation of broadcast coverage
CAUTION:
The navigational accuracy ofequipment using these satellite
broadcastSDsignalsduringthetestingandqualificationphasesis
notguaranteedbyRaymarineLimited,noristhecontinuationofthe
broadcastSDsignalstheresponsibilityof RaymarineLimited.

2.1 Planning the installation
Before starting toinstall the Raystar 120/112LP, read through the
followinginformationabout:

The Raystar 120/112LP package contains the following items:

Cabling guidelines
When running cable, always observe the following guidelines:
• ifacablehastobefedthroughthedeck,useagoodqualitydeckgland
• wherecablesare fedthroughholes,use grommetsto preventchafing
• secure long cable runs so they donot present a hazard
• whereverpossible,routecablesawayfromfluorescentlights,engines
and radio transmitting equipment, as these may cause interference
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) installation
guidelines
All Raymarine equipment and accessories are designed tothe best
industry standardsfor usein the recreational marineenvironment.Their
design and manufactureconforms to the appropriate Electromagnetic
Compatibility (EMC) standards, but correct installation is required to
ensure that performance isnot compromised. Althoughevery effort has
been taken to ensure that they will perform under all conditions, it is
importantto understandwhat factors could affect the operation of the
product.
The guidelines givenhere describe the conditions for optimum EMC
performance,butitisrecognizedthatitmaynotbepossibletomeetallof
theseconditionsin allsituations.To ensurethe bestpossibleconditions
for EMC performance within the constraints imposed by any location,
alwaysensurethemaximumseparationpossiblebetweendifferentitems
of electrical equipment.
For optimumEMC performance,we recommendedthat wherever
possible:
• Raymarine equipment and cables connected to it are:
• At least3 ft (1m) fromany equipmenttransmittingorcables
carryingradiosignalse.g.VHFradios,cablesandantennas.Inthe
case of SSB radios, the distance should be increased to 7 ft (2 m).

• Morethan 7 ft(2 m)from thepathof a radarbeam. A radarbeam
can normally be assumed to spread 20 degreesabove and below
theradiating element.
• The equipment is supplied from aseparate battery from that used for
engine start. Voltage drops below 10 V, and starter motor transients,
can cause the equipment toreset. This will not damage the
equipment, but may cause the loss of some information and may
changethe operatingmode.
• Raymarine specified cables are used.Cutting and rejoiningthese
cables can compromiseEMC performance and must be avoided
unless doing so is detailed in the installation manual.
• Ifasuppressionferriteisattachedtoacable,this ferriteshouldnotbe
removed.Iftheferriteneedstoberemovedduringinstallationitmust
be reassembled in the same position.
Suppression ferrites
Thefollowingillustrationshowstypicalcablesuppressionferritesusedwith
Raymarineequipment.AlwaysusetheferritessuppliedbyRaymarine.
Connections to other equipment
IfyourRaymarineequipmentistobeconnectedtootherequipmentusing
a cable notsupplied byRaymarine, a suppression ferriteMUST always
be attached tothe cable near tothe Raymarine unit.

2.2 Selecting a suitable location
Receiver location
The Raystar 120/112LP receiver is designed toreceive the signals
emitted from satellites in a direct path. It should be mounted:
•Onahorizontalsurface.
• In a location that is openandclearof anyobstructions(such as
masts,searchlights,orotherstructures)thatcouldblockline-of-sight
reception of signals.
•Aslowaspossible: the height of thereceiver is not as important as it
havingaclearview horizontohorizonforoptimumsignalreception.
In fact, the lower the unit can be mounted and have aclear view to
satellites, the better. The more stable the unit, the more effectively it
will track satellites low to the horizon.
Note:Do NOT mount the receiver upa mast, as the receiver will swing
with the boat, leading tosignificant COG/SOG errors.
• Asfar aspossible fromany sourcesofinterference: thereceiver
shouldbe separatedbyat least1 m(3 ft) fromother antennasand
electronicequipment.Itshouldnot bemountedinthedirectpathofa
radar’s beam.
Mounting options
You canmount theRaystar 120/112LPon apole or flushona suitable
horizontalsurface. Whenmounting thereceiver flushto a surface:
• select a suitable area which allows access to the underside of the
mountingsurface forfixing
• avoidareas wherethe receiver mightbe troddenupon orwhere it
might present atripping hazard
Cabling route
Whenplanningthe location forthe unit,consider thebest routefor
runningthecablebetweenthereceiverandGPSdisplayunitortotherest
ofan integratedsystem.Ideally, youshouldtry toroute thecableso it is:
• hiddenfromview
• separatedasfaraspossiblefromothercables(topreventinterference)

2.3 Mounting the receiver
When you haveselected a suitable location, follow the relevant
installation instructions for Polemountingor Surface mounting.
Pole mounting
Note: You willneedto obtaina suitablepolewith1inch 14TPI thread.
1. Securely attach the pole mount base to a suitable pole or railmount
bracket.
2. Passthe cablethrougheither:
A: the center hole of thepole mountbase, or
B:the cableexit holealongside the centerhole, or
C:the side exit channel
Note: If you intendto usethe sideexit channel,remove the two plastic
tabs obstructing the channel. Ifyoudonotremovethesetabsbefore
usingthecablechannel,youcoulddamagethecable.
3. Checkthecableispositionedcorrectly,thensecurethereceivertothe
pole mount base usingthe twoscrews provided.

Surface mounting
1. Use the template supplied in this handbook to mark the two6 mm
(0.25in) fixingholes.and then drill
2. OPTIONA:
Ifthecableisgoingtopassthroughthemountingsurfacedrilleither:
• 6 mm (0.25 in) center hole (for bare-ended SeaTalk cables), or
• 19 mm (0.75 in)center hole(for NMEA plugged cables)
OPTIONB:
If the cable is going to exit fromtheside of the receiver abovethe
mounting surface, removethe two plastic tabs (1) obstructing the
cablechannel. Ifyoudonot remove thesetabs beforeusingthe
cablechannel,you could damagethecable.
3. Screw the twomounting studs(2) into theunderside ofthe receiver.
4. Stickthe suppliedgasket(3) to the mountingsurface, ensuring that
the holes onthe gasketcorrespondwith the drilled holes
5. Pass thecabledownthroughthe centerhole (OptionA)orroute it
throughthe cable exit channel (OptionB).
6. Carefullypositionthereceiversothemountingstudspassthroughthe
holes in the mounting surface.
7. Secure the receiver to the surface using the twothumb nuts (4).

Note: As with all on-boardmarine equipment, you must ensure that the
power supply connection to the Raystar 120/112LPis adequately
protectedby asuitablyrated fuseor circuitbreaker.Usuallythiswillbe
achieved byproviding powervia afuseddisplay unit.
Using the moulded 6-pin NMEA connector
The unit is normally connected to an NMEA system via the 10 m (33ft)
cable terminated with a moulded 6-pin connector (seeFigure 3-1). Use
this connector if your equipmenthas a compatible GPS port.

Using an alternative NMEA connector
Ifyourequipmentisnotcompatiblewiththesuppliedconnector,remove
it and then either:
• use aconnector block tore-connect the cable
• connect the cable to another type of NMEA connector.
Refer to Table 3-1for information about cable colors. The cablecan be
cutasnecessarytotherequiredlength,orcoiledandstoredoutoftheway.
Note:Insulate andtape backany unused wires.
3.2 Raystar 120/112LP - SeaTalk versions
TheSeaTalkversionsof theRaystar120/112LPhavea10m(33ft)cable
with bare ends. Use this cable to connect to your existing SeaTalk bus,
using the cable color information detailed in Figure3-2.

3.3 Using a connector block
Whenconnecting aRaystar 120/112LPinto anexisting instrument
systemortocertainRaymarinechartplotters(e.g.Raychart 630),youcan
usea connector blockto:
• connect into theSeaTalk bus
• supplypowertotheSeaTalkbusforthisandotherapplications(ifDC
power is not already available via an existing SeaTalk instrument)
Figure 3-3shows how you can use a connector block to make the
interconnectionsbetween the Raystar 120/112LP, the SeaTalk busand,
if required, an external DC power supply.
CAUTION:
Useamultimeter(settoanappropriaterange) tocheckcorrect
polarityandconnectionsto the12 V DC supplybeforeyouapply
power to the Raystar receiver.
