RememBirdhasbeendesignedtofitmostmodernROOF‐PRISMbinoculars.Itwillnotfitporro‐
prismmodelswellbutcanbeusedinthehand.Pleasenotethattheself‐adhesiveVelcro®strips
providedcanbeverydifficulttoremoveonceattached.Donotfixthesetoyourbinoculars
unlessyouarepreparedtoleavethemtherepermanently.SoftwareHothouseLtdacceptsNO

TheRememBirdrecorderisshownbelow.Itisdesignedtofitbetweenthebarrelsofmostroof‐
prismbinoculars,ontheunderside.Youcanattachthesuppliedself‐adhesiveVelcro®stripstothe
areaofyourbinocularsthattherecordermakescontactwith.Therecorderitselfhastwolarge
Velcro®patchesalreadyapplied.Alternatively,youcanattachthewrist‐strapsupplied.

INSERTING/CHANGINGABATTERY
Toinsertorchangeabattery:
1. HoldRememBirdsothatthebuttonsarefacingawayfromyou.
2. Thereisaraisedarrowandthreeridgesatthenarrowendofthebatterycover.Pressdown
hereandpushfirmlyinthedirectionofthearrow.
3. Removethebatterycover(H).
4. Removetheoldbatteryandinsertanew1.5VAAAalkalineorlithiumbattery.(Lithium
batteriesarerecommended).Besuretoinsertthebatterythecorrectwayround,shownon
thepictureinsidethebatterycompartment.
5. Slidethebatterycoverontillitclickshome.
Changethebatterypromptly!
Whenchangingthebattery,aspecialcircuitkeepsthereal‐timeclockrunningfor10seconds
whenthereisnobatterypresent.Youshouldinsertthenewbatteryasquicklyaspossibleto
avoidtherecorderlosingtrackofthetime.Ifitdoeslosethetime,itwillresynchronisewhenyou
nextuploadrecordingstoyourPC/MacbutifitlosesthetimetwicebetweenPCconnections,
youwillhavetoentertheestimatedtimeoftherecordings.Forthesamereason,youshould
replacethebatterybeforeitiscompletelydrained.Ifthebatteryhasdrainedcompletely,inserta
newone;connectittoyourcomputerandclick“File>UploadRecordings”toallowtheclockto
besetcorrectly.
Evenwhenturnedoffthereisstillasmalldrainonthebattery.Ifyouintendtoleave
RememBirdunusedforseveralweeks,youshouldremovethebatteryfromitorleaveit
connectedtoapoweredUSBsocket.Ifyoudoremovethebattery,followthestepsonpage11
afterinsertingthebatteryagainsothatthereal‐timeclockissynchronisedbeforeyouheadfor
thefield.
ATTACHINGTHESTRAP
IfyouwanttoholdRememBirdinyourhand,ratherthanattachittoyourbinoculars,we
recommendthatyouattachthesuppliedstraporasimilarstrapofyourown.Adjustthestrap
providedbyslidingtheblack“bead”upordownit.
Ifyoudonotwishtousethestrapyoumayremovetheconnectorthatisloopedthroughthe
holesinthebatterycover.

ATTACHINGTOBINOCULARS
TherecorderhastwolargeVelcro®patchesthatshouldcomeintocontactwiththeundersideof
yourbinoculars.Tofixtherecorderfirmly:
1. Ensurethattheeye‐pieces
areattheseparationyou
normallyuse.
2. Iftheyarenotalreadyin
placethen,without
removingthebackingstrips
thatcovertheadhesive,
placethesuppliedVelcro
stripsontothematching
areasonRememBird.
3. Determinethebestposition
fortherecorder.Itshould
notobstructyournose.
Ideally,positionitsothat
theBirdsongMicrophone
(F)islevelwiththeobjective
lenses.Notethatthis
pictureshowstheunderside
ofthebinocularsi.e.thesidefacingyourchestastheyhangroundyourneck.
4. Whenyouarehappywiththeposition,liftRememBirdupandremovethebackingstrips
fromtheVelcrohookstrips,exposingtheadhesive.
5. PressRememBirdfirmlybackintothepositionyouselected.
6. HoldtheVelcrostripsdownasyoucarefullyliftoneendofRememBird,leavingthestrips
inplaceonthebinoculars.
7. Pressthestripsveryfirmlyontothebinoculars.
8. WhenremovingRememBird,alwaysliftitfromoneend.
RememBirdhasbeendesignedtofitmost,modernROOF‐PRISMbinoculars.Itwillnotfitporro‐
prismmodelswell.
Pleasenotethattheself‐adhesiveVelcro®stripsprovidedareverydifficulttoremoveonce
attached.Donotfixthesetoyourbinocularsunlessyouarepreparedtoleavethemthere
permanently.SoftwareHothouseLtdacceptsNOresponsibilityforanydamagethatmaybe
causedbytheadhesiveorattemptstoremoveit.

INSTALLINGTHEPC/MACSOFTWARE
RememBirdcontainsinstallationkitsforaPCandMacapplicationthathelpsyoutoorganizeyour
recordings.ThiscanbeinstalledonaPCorMacthatmeetstheminimumconfigurationdetailed
onpage39.
Toinstallthesoftware:
1. Closeanyotherapplicationsthatmayberunning.
2. LiftandrotateflapDtoexposetheUSBsocket.
3. ConnectRememBirdtoaUSBportusingthesuppliedcable.Thecapacityindicator(I)will
“ripple”acrossasmessagesareexchangedwiththecomputer.Therecorder’smemoryshows
upasanewdiskdriveinthesamewaythataUSBmemorystickdoes.
4. OnWindows,
-AwindowshowingthefilesontheRememBirdmaypopupwhenyouconnectitto
yourPC.Ifnot,useExplorerorMyComputertonavigatetotheUSBdrivelabeled
“RememBirdII”.Double‐clickonSETUPtoinstalltheprogram.
5. OnMAC
-UseFindertonavigatetotheUSBdrivewiththenamebeginning“RB2_”(the
remainingdigitsareyourRememBird’sserialnumber).ClickintoRB2MAC.DMGand
runtheinstallationpackagecontainedinthisfile.
6. Followtheinstructionsonscreen.
BEFOREUSINGREMEMBIRD
Beforeyoustartrecording,itisimportanttosynchroniseRememBird’sclockwithyour
computer’s–otherwiseyourrecordingswillnotbetime‐stampedaccurately.Assumingyouhave
justinstalledthesoftwareasdescribedabove,keepRememBirdconnectedtoyourcomputer
and:
1. CheckthatyourPC’sclockisaccurateandresetitifnot.Ideally,synchronizeittoatime‐
server.AlsocheckthatyourPCissettothecorrecttime‐zoneforyourlocation.
2. Runtheapplicationyouhaveinstalled.Ifyouareconnectedtotheinternetitwillcheckfor
updatesandoffertoupgradeifitfindsany.Youshouldnormallyletitdothis.
3. Clickthe“Uploadrecordings”icononthetoolbar–evenifyouhavenotmadeany
recordings.Therecorder’sclockissynchronizedwiththecomputer’saspartoftheupload
process.
4. TheapplicationwillalsochecktheversionoffirmwarerunningontheRememBirdandwill
upgradeitifneeded.

5. WaitfortheLEDstoreturntotheir“idle”mode–movingacrossaboutonceasecond.
6. WhenyouremovetheUSBcable,RememBirdwillautomaticallyshutdowntoconserve
batterypower.
Followyouroperatingsystem’snormalproceduresforthesaferemovaloftheRememBird.For
example,onWindowsVista,right‐clickonthediskdriveiconandselect“SafelyRemove”.

BASICUSEINTHEFIELD
ThissectiondescribeshowtouseRememBirdtorecordandreviewnotesandbirdsonginthe
field.Itassumesthatyouhavecompletedthetasksintheprevioussectionandarereadytotake
therecorderintothefield.Theinstructionswhichfollowreferbacktothefeaturesshownin
Figure1.TheseinstructionsaresummarizedontheQuick‐startguideincludedwithyour
RememBird.
Thissectiondescribesbasicoperationusingthedefaultsettings.Latersectionsexplainalternative
settingsandmoreadvancedoptions.
POWER‐ON/OFF(A)
Button(A)atthetopleftoftherecorderisusedtopowertheunitonandoff.Thisbuttonis
recessedandignoresshortpressestoavoidbeingturnedonoroffaccidentally.
•IfRememBirdisoff(nolightsflashing),pressandholdthisbuttonuntilallthelightsstay
ontoturntherecorderON.(Thelightswillflashverybrieflyasyoupressthebuttonbut
youmustholditforabout2secondsuntilallthelightsstayon.)
•IfRememBirdison,(oneormorelightsflashing),pressthisbuttonandholdituntilall
thelightscomeon(afterabouttwoseconds)thenreleaseittoturntherecorderOFF.
Toconservebatterypower,theunitwillturnitselfoffifnobuttonsarepressedforhalfanhour.
ThisperiodcanbemodifiedusingtheRememBirdPreferencessettingsonyourcomputer.
Note:IftheunitisconnectedtoaPC,itwillbepermanentlyON–sinceitisdrawingpowerfrom
thePCnotitsownbattery‐butwillturnoffautomaticallywhenitisdisconnected.When
connectedtoyourcomputer,allbuttonsaredisabled.Usetheaccompanyingsoftwareonyour
PCtocontroltherecorderinthisstate.
INDICATORLIGHTS
Therearetwosetsofindicatorsalongthetopedgeoftherecorder.
BATTERYLEVELINDICATOR(J)
Thebattery‐levelindicator(J),nexttotheon/offbutton(A)indicatesthestateofthebatteryas

Whenrunningonbattery,theindicatorflashesbrieflyapproximatelyevery2seconds.
Whenconnectedtoacomputer,itlightsgreencontinuouslyorflashesredorredandgreen
accordingtothestateofthebattery.
BothredandgreenLEDslightsteadilyifyoupressthepoweron/offbutton(A)butnoactionis
takenunlessyouholdittillallthelightscomeon.
Youshouldalwayscarryasparebatteryortwoandchangethebatteryassoonastheindicator
showsredonly.Ifyoudonotchangethebatterybeforeitiscompletelydrained,yourisklosing
thereal‐timeclockuntilyounextconnecttoyourcomputer.Yourrecordingswillnotbelostbut
subsequentrecordingsmaynotbetime‐stampedcorrectly.
Aswithmobilephones,whenthebatteryisalmostexhausted,youmayfindthatithasenough
powertoturntherecorderonbutassoonasyouattempttorecordorplaybackaudio,theextra
drainonthebatterycannotbesustainedandtherecorderswitchesoff.Thisisnormalandis
resolvedbychangingthebattery.Playingaudiousesmorepowerthanrecording,especiallyifyou
havethevolumeturnedup.Toimprovebatterylife,useplaybacksparingly.
CAPACITYINDICATOR(I)
ThisconsistsoffiveLEDsthatshowhowmuchoftherecorder’smemoryhasbeenused–
allowingyoutojudgewhenuploadtherecordingstoyourPC.Astherecorderhas4GBof
onboardmemory,itisrareforthistoreachthesecondLED.

situatedbelowthepoweron/offbutton.Recordingstartswhenyoupressthebuttonandstops
whenyoureleaseit.(Thisavoidsitbeingleftrecordingbyaccident.)TheCapacityIndicator(I)
willflashrapidlyduringrecording.
Themicrophonefornotesrecording(K)ispositionedaboveyourmouthwhenRememBirdis
attachedtobinoculars.Holdtheunit6inchesawayfromyourmouthifusingthewrist‐strap.
Usingthedefaultsettings,therecordinglevelautomaticallyadjuststothelevelofyourvoiceso
youcanwhisperortalkquietlytoavoiddisturbingthebirdsorotherbirdwatchers.Makeand
playbackafewtestrecordingstogaugethelevelatwhichyoushouldspeakforbestquality
recordings.TherecorderisdeliberatelydesignedtoworkbestwhenyouWHISPER.
IfyouprefertouseafixedgainoradjustthegainmanuallyyoucanalterthissettingunderEdit>
RememBirdPreferences>RecorderSettings>Notesontheapplication.
BIRDSONGRECORDING(B)
Pressthebuttonwiththemusicalnoteicon(B)tostartrecordingambientsoundssuchasbird
songthroughthemicrophone(F)atthefrontoftherecorder.Recordingstartswhenyoupress

thebuttonandstopswhenyoureleaseit(Thisavoidsitbeingleftrecordingbyaccident.)The
CapacityIndicator(I)willflashrapidlyduringrecording.
Donotapproachtooclosetoacallingbirdasthedefaultsettingisforafixedandquitehighgain.
Distortionmayoccurifthesoundistooloud.Alwaysplaybackyourrecordingstochecktheir
qualitybeforeleavingacallingbird.
Alsonotethatifyouhave“AlwaysListening”modeturnedon,thefirstfewsecondsofthe
recordingarefrombeforeyoupressedthebutton.Ifyouwerewalkingormovingtherecorder
then,thiswillberecordedandmaybemuchlouderthanthebirdsongthatfollows.
Anytimeyouarenotactivelyrecordingorplayingaudio,RememBirdisstilllisteningandis
keepingtheaudioithearsforashortperiod‐(bydefault,8seconds).
WheneveryoupresstheBirdsongrecordbutton(B)theaudiocapturedduringthisperiodis
automaticallyretained.So,ifabirdfliesoverandcalls,youhave8secondsinwhichtopress
button(B)andkeepthisrecording–eventhoughyouweren’tdeliberatelyrecordingatthetime
itcalled!
PLAY/PAUSE(PRESSGIN)
Toplayarecording,presstheReplayControl(G)IN(nottotheleft,right,upordown).When

HoldingtheReplayControl(G)UPorDOWNwillgraduallyincreaseordecreasethereplayvolume
betweentheavailableextremes.Youcanonlydothisduringreplay.
Asyouadjustthevolume,aCapacityIndicator(I)willlightsteadilytoshowtheapproximate
volumelevel(1to5).
Becausenotesandbirdsongrecordingsaretypicallymadeatverydifferentlevels,thevolumeat
whicheachisplayedissetindependentlyoftheother.
Thiscontrolaffectsthevolumethatyouhearrecordingsbutitdoesnotaffecthowtheyare
recordedunlessyouhaveenabledmanualgaincontrolviayourcomputer.Ifyouhavedonethis,
thenholdingthebuttonupordownwhilerecordingalterstherecordinggainratherthanthe
playvolume.
Whensetathighvolumelevels(theredLEDshowing)therecorderisdigitallyamplifyingthe
audiobeforeoutputtingit.Iftheoriginalsignalwasatorclosetofullscale,thiswillresultin
clipping(distortion)ofthesignal.ItisrareforrecordingsmadewithRememBirdtoapproachthis
levelandhencetheextragainisusefulinboostingtheirvolumeandwillnotnormallyleadto
clipping.

volumesettingabovethecentreLED.Highervolumecanbeobtainedbutthesoundmaybe
