Fuse
This apparatus must be protected by a 3A fuse (BS1362) in a 13A plug
(BS1363).Ifanothertypeofplugisuseda5Afuseshouldbefittedintheplug,
adaptorordistributionboard.
IFINDOUBT-CONSULTAQUALIFIEDELECTRICIAN.
Batteries
Removethebatterycover(18)ontherearoftheunitbypushingthecatches
inthedirectionofthearrows.InsertfiveIECsizeLR14batteries(csize)into
the compartment. Take care to ensure all batteries are inserted with the
correct polarity as shown inside the battery compartment. Replace the
batterycover.
Reduced power, distortion, and a 'stuttering' sound are all signs that the
batteriesmayneedreplacing.
We would recommend for economy, that the SRC985 is used on the
mains whenever possible with battery operation for occasional or
stand-byuseonly.
AutomaticMains/Batteryswitching
Tochangefrombatterytomainsoperation,simplyplugthemainsleadinto
the mains input socket (11) on the rear of the unit. The batteries will be
automaticallydisconnected.Itdoesnotmatterwhich wayroundtheplugis
inserted but make sure it is fully pushed home. The other end should be
plugged into a domestic supply socket.
General
Do not allow this unit to be exposed to water, steam or sand. Do not leave
theunitwhereexcessiveheatcouldcausedamagesuchasinaparkedcar
wheretheheatfromthesuncanbuildupeventhoughtheoutsidetemperature
may not seem too high. It is recommended that the FM band be used
wherever possible as better results in terms of quality and freedom from
interference will usually be obtained than on the MW or LW bands.
Mainssupply
TheSRC985 will operate from a supplyof AC 230 volts, 50Hz only.
Foryourconvenience thisproductissuppliedwithaplugwhichisfittedwith
a fuse of the appropriate rating. If the plug supplied is not suitable for your
socketoutlet,itshouldberemovedbyunscrewingtheplugtop,theterminal
screws,andremovingthecable.
Thecorrectstyleofplugtosuityourhouseholdtogetherwithacorrectlyrated
fuseshould be fitted.
IFINDOUBT-CONSULTAQUALIFIEDELECTRICIAN
IMPORTANT.DONOTmakeanyconnectiontothelargerterminalwhichis
markedwiththeletterEorbythesafetyearthsymbol orcolouredGreen
orGreen-and-yellow.
The wires in the mains lead are coloured in accordance with the following
codes :- BLUE - NEUTRAL BROWN - LIVE
Asthesecoloursmaynotcorrespondwiththecolouredmarkingsidentifying
the terminals in your plug, proceed as follows:
The wire coloured BLUE must be connected to the terminal marked N or
colouredBLACK.
ThewirecolouredBROWNmustbeconnectedtotheterminalmarkedLor
colouredRED.

FM stereo operation
Setthefunctionswitch(17)tothe'Radio'position.Setthewavebandselect
switch(19)tothe'FM'position.SettheFMmodebutton(16)tothe'Stereo'
(down)position.Adjustthevolumecontrol(13)untilahissingsoundisheard.
The telescopic aerial (14) which is only operational on FM, should be fully
extended.Carefullytunetothedesiredstationusingthetuningcontrol(20).
Ifthestationbeingreceivedisin'Stereo'thestereoindicator(9)willilluminate.
Angleandrotatethetelescopicaerialtoapositiongivingthebestreception.
Aknucklejoint atthebase oftheaerial allowsthismovement andanangle
of45degreeswillusuallybesatisfactory.IftheFMsignalbecomesweakor
isaccompaniedbyahighlevelofbackgroundhiss,youmayselect'MONO'
mode by setting the FM mode button (16) to the 'Mono' (up) position.
TheFMbandismarkedinMegahertz(MHz).Toswitchofftheradio,setthe
functionswitch(17)tothe 'Off/Tape'position.
Medium and long wave operation
Setthefunctionswitch(17)tothe'Radio'position.Select'MW'or'LW'using
thewavebandselectswitch(19).Adjustthevolumecontrol(13)untilahissing
soundisheard.Carefullytunetothedesiredstationusingthetuningcontrol
(20). The unit should be rotated for optimum reception. The MW and LW
bandsaremarkedinkilohertz(kHz).Toswitchofftheradio,setthefunction
switch(17)tothe 'Off/Tape'position.
Listening to cassette tapes
Set the function switch (17) to the 'Off/Tape' position. Press the stop/eject
button (4) to open the cassette compartment (10). Insert a pre-recorded
cassette with the tape surface uppermost and the side with the desired
recordingfacingtowardsyou.Closethecassettecompartment.Depressthe
playbutton(7)andadjustthevolumecontrol(13)tosuityourpersonaltaste.
Usethefast forward(5)orrewindbuttons (6)tolocateaspecific partofthe
tape.Ifyouwishtotemporarilystoptheplaybackdepressthepausebutton
(3). When you are ready to resume playback press the pause button a
second time.
Recording from the Radio
Set the Function switch (17) to the 'Radio' position. Tune in to the desired
station. Adjust the volume control (13) to suit your requirements. Insert a
blankcassettewiththetapesurfaceuppermost.Depresstherecordbutton
(8)to commencerecording.The recordinglevel is setautomatically and is
not affected by the setting of the volume control.
Recording from the Internal Microphone
Setthefunctionswitch(17)tothe'Off/Tape'position.Insertablankcassette
withthetapesurfaceuppermost.Presstherecordbutton(8)tocommence
recording.
Note:Toreducebackgroundnoiseitisimportanttospeakascloseas
possibletotheinternalmicrophone(1).
Caution
If the record button will not depress, do not force it. It is probably because
the cassette tabs have been broken to prevent accidental erasure of an
existingrecording.(seepreventingaccidentalerasure)

ABCD
Preventingaccidental erasure
To safeguard your recordings against accidental erasure, break off the
appropriatetabonthecassetteasshown.Thereisonetabforeachsideof
the cassette. This will prevent the Record button from being pressed. To
restore the cassette to normal, seal the tab openings with a small piece of
self-adhesivetape.
Cleaning the Heads
Thebinderandoxidefrommagnetictapescanaccumulateonthepinchroller
(A)the capstan shaft (B)and also the heads(C and D). Thiswill impair the
soundquality.
Toclean these parts proceed as follows:-
1. Turn off the power to the unit
2. Press the Stop/eject button (4).
3. Press the Play button (7), and the heads will be clearly seen.
4.Cleanthesurfaces(A,B,C, D)witha lintfreerag orcottonswab soaked
in alcohol. Press the Stop/eject button as soon as cleaning is over.
