TheRolandBK-9isapowerfulbackingkeyboardwithmanyfunctionsandparameters.ThisEditorwillhelpyoutoedit
theparametersrelatedtoyourperformancesinaneasyandcomfortableway.
Inaddition,eachparameterthatyouwillchangebyusingthePerformanceEditorapplicationwillbeimmediately
availableinBK-9,inrealtime.ViceversaeachparameterchangedintheBK-9willbereectedinthePerformanceEditor.
BK-9 Performance Editor highlights:

real-timekeyboardparts.

Connectingyourequipment
What do you need to use BK-9 Performance Editor?
MIDI cable connection
•ABK-9BackingKeyboardequippedwiththesoftwareversion1.06orlater.
•AnAppleiPadCameraConnectionKit(CameraconnectorsmadebyAppleInc.)
•AstandardUSBcable(typeA–male-typeB–male:commerciallyavailable)
Wireless connection
•ABK-9BackingKeyboardequippedwiththesoftwareversion1.06orlater.
•AwirelessUSBadapter(RolandWNA1100-RL)
•AwirelessLANaccesspoint(suchasawirelessLANrouter)thatsupportsWPS
YoucanchooseeitherastandardorawirelessconnectionbetweenyouriPadandyourBK-9.Youcanconnectseveral
BK-9instrumentstoyouriPad,eventhoughtheinteractionoccursonlyinonecombinationatatime.
MIDI cable connection
1. Connect your iPad with your BK-9 by using a USB iPad camera connector and a USB cable.
Wireless Connection
1. Simply connect the WNA1100-RL Wireless USB Adaptor to the USB port of your BK-9, and launch
BK-9 Performance Editor.

BeforeYouStartUsingBK-9PerformanceEditor
1. Connect your BK-9 and your iPad. See “Connecting your equipment” (p. 5).
2. Turn your BK-9 and your iPad on.
3. Press the BK-9 Performance Editor icon on your iPad to open this app.
BK-9 Performance Editorcheckstheavailabledevices.Attheendthefollowingpageappears:

Ifyoudidn’tchooseaMIDIcableconnection,alistoftheavailablewirelessdevicesisshown.IfseveralBK-9instrumentsareavailablefor
connection,wesuggesttosetaWirelessIDintherangeof1–99ineveryBK-9unit.ThiswaytheBK-9PerformanceEditorwillbeabletolistallthe
availabledevicesaccordingtotheircodenumbers(e.g.BK-9_1,BK-9_2,BK-9_3,etc.).

UsingControls
AllthecontrolsinBK-9PerformanceEditorwereespeciallydesignedtoprovidemaximumexibilityandconvenience.
Knob operation
TheKnobscontrolmostparameterswithcontinuousvalues,suchasReverb,Chorus,Cutoandmanyothereects.
Coarse Control
Tomoveaknob,simplytouchtheknob(itwillretainfocus)withyourngerandslideyournger
upordown.
Itscorrespondingvalueboxisupdatedwiththecurrentvalue.
Fine Control
Tonelycontrolvalues,touchtheknob(itwillretainfocus)withyournger,slideyourngerto
theleftorrightoftheknobandthenslideitupordown.
Itscorrespondingvalueboxisupdatedwiththecurrentvalue.
Default Value
Presstheknobtwicetorestorethedefaultvalue.
Slider operation
TheSliderscontroltheVolumeforeachrealtimepartandotherparameters.
Tomoveaslider,simplytouchit(itwillretainfocus)withyourngerandslideitupordown.Itscorrespondingvalue
boxisupdatedwiththecurrentvalue.
Default Value
Presstheslidertwicetorestorethedefaultvalue(ThisisnottrueforVolume
sliders).
Button Operation
Button Type Explanation
Somebuttonsallowyoutoselectthegroupsofparametersthat
youwanttoedit([MIXER],[PARTSEDITOR],[MFXEDITOR],[TONE
EDITOR],[HANDCTRLS]and[FOOTCTRLS]).
Thesebuttonsaremutuallyexclusive;oneisalwaysselected.
SomebuttonsworkasON/OFFswitchofparameters.Whenthe
parameterisONthebuttonishighlighted.
Someotherbuttonsopenpop-upwindows,whereyoucantake
someaction(e.g.the[TUNE]button).
Touseasliderbuttonyouneedtotouchitwithyourngerand
thenslideyournger.

TheMixerpage(automaticallyselectedatthestartup)allowsyoutoadjusttheVolume,reverb,chorusandpanpotfor
eachreal-timepart(UPPER1,UPPER2,LOWER,MANUALBASS,MELODYINTELLIGENTandD-BEAM).Youcansetthepart
ONorOFF.
Adjusting the Volume for Each Part
1. Use the sliders to adjust the Volume for each real-time part. See “Slider operation” (p. 7).
Tones/D-BEAMFunction
Thetonenameforeachpartisverticallydisplayedattheleftofeachslider.
ThenameofthefunctionassignedtotheD-BEAMisverticallydisplayedattheleftofitsslider.
Adjusting the Reverb, Chorus and Panpot for Each Part
1. Use the knobs to adjust the Reverb, Chorus and Panpot. See “Knob operation” (p. 7).
Switching a Part ON/OFF
1. Use the buttons to switch the desired part ON/OFF . See “Button Operation” (p. 7).

Switching the D-BEAM part ON/OFF
TheD-BEAMpartON/OFFbuttonworksslightlydierentfromtheothers,sinceyouwillneedtochooseyourdesired
typeoffunction[DJGEAR],[SFX],[INST]and[CTRL].
1. Press the“O” eld to switch the D-BEAM part ON.
Apop-upwindowappearswithfourbuttons.
Eachbuttonrepresentsafamilyofeects/functions([DJGEAR],[SFX],[INST]and[CTRL]).
Eachfamilycontainsaseriesofdierenteects/functions.Youcanchooseoneatatime.Thecurrentlyselectedoneis
displayedintheright-handelds.
2. Press one of the four D-BEAM buttons.
3. To change the eect/function, touch the eld on the right-hand side of the needed D-BEAM family button and
select any other one available in the displayed list.

Writing TEXT information
Theso-called“BK–TEXTINPUT”functioncomesinveryhandyeverytimeyouneedtosmoothlywritesomekindoftext
inyourBK-9.
1. Press the small keyboard button on the right side of the page.
AfullkeyboardwillappearonyouriPad:useittotypeanykindoftextyouneedtoenterinyourBK-9.
2. To exit this function, press either the small keyboard button on the right side of the page again or the key in the
bottom right corner.
