INITIALSET-UPOFTHEPOCKETPC
Thefollowingsection provides afriendlystep-by-stepguide that
assistyouthroughtheinitialsetupoftheEmpusPocketPC.
STEP1:CHARGING THE POCKETPCBATTERY
TheEmpusPocketPCcanbeconvenientlychargedwitheitherthe
suppliedACadaptorortheoptionalUSBdock.
1. Slidetheadaptor plugintotheguiderailattheback oftheAC
adaptor.PlugtheACadaptorintoawalloutletthatiseasily
accessible.
2. The charging statusdisplayflashes greenuntilthePocketPC is
charged.Donotinterruptthechargingprocessbefore thebattery
is fullycharged.Thismaytakeafewhours.ThePocketPC is fully
chargedifthe charging displaylightsgreen.(Remember to
chargethe Empus PocketPC foratleast10 hours for the first
time.)
3. Leave themains adapter connected tothe PocketPC for around
24 hours,sothatthebackup batteryalsocharges-up fully.

AsanalternativetotheUSBdockingstation,youcanalsoconnect
theACadaptordirectlytothePocketPCoruse theoptional
ActiveSync-cable.
AttachtheUSBconnector(Œ)toan availableUSBportofyourPC
andtheActiveSync®connector(•)totheActiveSyncportofyour
PocketPC. ThePC mustbeswitchedonforchargingthroughthe
ActiveSynccable.Installingtheincludedactive-syncSoftwarefirst
before connectingtheActiveSynccable!
INSTALLING MICROSOFTACTIVESYNC
In order tosynchronizeyourdata(e-mails,contacts,dates,etc.)
between yourPC andthePocketPC, you need the Microsoft
ActiveSyncprogram.
YourPocketPC includes alicenseforthis MicrosoftActiveSync
programwhichcanbe foundon theCD.
²If you donot have MicrosoftOutlook2002 onyourPC, please
installOutlook2002 followingthedirectionsabove.
²Attention:You should not connectthePocketPCtoyour
computer yet.
1. StartWindowsandre-inserttheCD suppliedin order toagain
displaytheinstallation menuyou are alreadyfamiliarwith.
2. Click Install ActiveSync.
²Ontherightside ofthewindow youwillseemore
detailsabout
the ActiveSyncsoftwareandadditionalhintsforinstallation.
3. Clicknow onInstall.
4. Adialogboxappearsthatinforms youthataprogramnow hasto
be installed.Click OK.
5. Youare now asked whether youwanttoopenthefileorstoreit
on thePC. Selectthe Open optionhere andfollowthe
instructionsonthescreen.

6. If testingtheconnection options,insertthePocketPC inthe
charging/synchronization dockingstation.
²If otherprograms havebeen bundled,you will findthese on
yourCompanion CD under:
Enhance YourExperience Mobility or Entertainment.
STEP 2:SWITCHING ONTHE POCKET PC
1. Press theOn/Off switchin order tostartthePocketPC. The
PocketPC will automaticallystartsintheinitialset-upscreen.
Thebrandlogoappears andafewseconds later thePocketPC
displays theWindowsMobile2003 welcomescreen.
2. Withthestylus,give thescreen oneshorttouchandfollow the
instructionsthatare displayedtoyou.
3. Selectthetimezoneby tappingonthedatelineon thestart-up
screen andadjusttimeanddate.
STEP 3:CONNECTING TOTHE COMPUTER
4. StartthePocketPC, byashortpressoftheOn/Off switch.
5. EnsurethatthePocketPCisinsertedintheUSB dockingstation.
6. PlugtheUSBplugintoafree USBslot onyourcomputer.
²The hardware installation assistant willnow
detectanewdevice
andinstallasuitabledriver.Thismaytakeafewminutes.
PleaserepeattheconnectionattemptiftheEmpus PocketPCis
notsuccessfullyrecognized.
4. Follow theinstructionsonyourscreen.Theprogramwill now set
upapartnershipbetweenyourPC andthePocketPC. Asaresult
ofthesynchronization,yourdata(mail,contacts,appointments,
etc.)willbeautomaticallysynchronizedbetweentheEmpus
PocketPC andyourpersonalcomputer.
SYNCHRONIZATIONBETWEEN POCKET PC AND PC
Whenyou insertthePocketPC inthecharging/synchronization
dockingstation, MicrosoftActiveSyncisautomaticallystarted.
TheprogramchecksifthePocketPC isonewithwhichapartnership
hasalreadybeenestablished.
If this isthecasethechanges thathave takenplace on thePC and

on thePocketPC since thelastsynchronizationare compared and
reconciled.
In theSettingsmenuofthe MicrosoftActiveSyncprogramyoucan
definepreciselywhichrulesaretobeappliedduring
synchronization.
Call uptheprogramHelp(by pressingF1)inordertoseetheeffects
of thecorrespondingsettings.
If thePocketPC isnotrecognized asapartner,restrictedguest
accessisautomaticallyactivated thatallows,forexample,datato
be exchanged.
If thisshouldoccureventhoughthereisaregisteredpartnership,
remove thePocketPC fromthecharging/synchronization docking
station andswitchitoffandon again.
Re-insertthePocketPC inthecharging/synchronization docking
stationinorder torestarttheidentification process.If thisstill does
notwork,repeattheprocess andalsorestartyourPC.
If youhavechanged thedevice namein thePocketPC thismay be
thecauseofthismalfunction.Please remember thisifyou change
thename ofthePocketPC under Start Settings .
ChangethedevicenameofthePocketPC ifnecessary,ifitdoes not
correspondwiththedevicename storedby ActiveSync.
STEP 4:USING THE POCKET PC
OPERATINGTHE POCKET PC
1. Take thePocketPC outofthedockingstation.
In order toexecuteafunction oraprogram,
-Use thestylustotap Start andthentabyourdesired operation
on thedropdownlist.
-Press theprogramkeysofthePocketPC inordertostartthe
desiredprogram.Theunderlyingprogramscanbe defined
using Start Settings Buttons .

can beobtained from Start Help .

WORKING WITH MEMORYCARDS
YourPocketPC supportsMMC andSDmemorycards.
INSERTING MEMORY CARDS
1. Carefullytake thememory card outofitspacking(ifincluded).
Take care not totouch ordirtythecontactpoints.
2. Pushthememorycardcarefullyintothecardslot asshown.The
side ofthememory card wearingthelabelmustpointupwards.
Thememory card shouldslightlylockin place.
REMOVING MEMORY CARDS
²Do not removethememorycardwhileit isbeingaccessed.
This
couldresult inthelossof data.
1. Toremovethecard press lightlyontheSDcard anditwilleject
itself.
2. Pullthecardoutwithouttouchingthecontacts.
3. Storethememorycard inthepackingorin another safe
location.
²Memory cards are veryfragile.Takecare notto dirty the
contactsand nottoforce thecard.
ACCESSING MEMORY CARDS
Memory cardsare normallyshownas StorageCards inthe Windows
Explorer.
You can accessthememorycard like anormaldrivetostore,
renameordeletefiles.
²ThePocketPC onlysupportsmemorycards inthe
FAT16/32file
format.Ifyou insertacardprepared with adifferentformat
(e.g.in cameras,MP3 players),yourPocketPC maynot
recognize itandwillaskyou toformatitagain.
Warning:Formattingthememorycard wipesout alldata.
²Likewise youcannotjustcopyfilesontothememory card.In
some cases,thefiles mustbe convertedbythe Microsoft
ActiveSyncprogram.

DATAEXCHANGE VIACARD READER
You cantransfer orsynchronize dataviaActiveSync®.Thisisalso
thecorrectmethod,in particular,iffilesaretobetransferredthat
mustbeconverted intoaPocketPC-readableformat.
However,ifyou wishtocopylarge quantitiesofdata(MP3files,
navigationmaps)tothememorycard,thesecan alsobe stored
directlytothememory card.
Manycomputersalreadyhave memorycarddevices.Insertthe
card inthisandcopythedatadirectlytothecard.
Because ofthedirectaccess significantlyfaster transfer willbe
achieved.
Note: SDinformationupdateissue.
DuetoMicrosoft'sinternaldesignque,usersneed toperformthe
followingsteps inorder toreadtheSDcard information uponthe
removalandinsertion oftheSDcard.
1.Taponthe"start"icon
2.Tapon "Programs"on thedropdown list
3.Tapon "FileExplorer"
4.Taponthe"Storage Card"tab.Users willbeabletoreadthe
currentinformationthatisstoredinside yourSDcard (if
presented).
Upontheinsertion/removaloftheSDcard,please taponthe
"StorageCard"tabagain,in ordertogettherefreshedinformation
on yournewlyinserted SDcard.

RESETTING THEPOCKETPC
Therearetwo optionsforresettingthePocketPC.
SOFT-RESET
Thisoption restartsthePocketPC, withoutreinstallation being
necessary.Asoft-resetisoftenused in order toreorganize the
memory.Indoingsoallprograms thatare runningareinterrupted
andtheworkingmemory isreinitialized.
Choose thisoption if yourPocketPC isnotrespondingorworking
properly.
Perform thesoft-resetasfollows:
1. If possiblesave thefiles thatyourPocketPC hasjustbeen
processing.
2. Press thetipofthestylusintothesoft-resetswitch opening.
After afewseconds thePocketPC displaysthestartscreen.
Yourconfiguration andyoursaved files will not bedeleted.
HARD-RESET
Warning:Ahard-reset deletes alldata onyourPocketPCandcauses
ittoreturntoitsinitialstate.
It isnotnecessarytoinstallthesoftware on yoursynchronization
computeragain,however.
Perform thehard-resetasthefollowing:
1. If possible,back upallthefilesneeded fromyourPocketPC.To
dothisusetheprogramsbundledwiththePocketPC (see
onlinehelporthemanualon CD).
2. HolddowntheOn/Off switchandcarryoutasoftreset.

Thestylusserves asamouse forcomputers.Itisused tonavigate
andselectobjectsonthescreen.Pullthestylusout oftheslotand
extenditforease ofuse.Storeitin theslotwhennotinuse.

Touchthescreen once withthestylus
toopenitemsandselectoptions.
ØDrag
Holdthestylusonthescreenanddrag
across thescreentoselecttextand
images.Draginalisttoselectmultiple
items.
ØTap andhold
Tap and holdthe styluson an itemtosee a
listofactionsavailableforthatitem.Onthe
pop-up menu thatappears, tap the action
you want toperform.
USING THENAVIGATION PAD
Withthenavigation pad,youcan moveup,
down,leftandrightwithin amenuby
pressingthecorrespondingareaofthepad.
Thisisparticularlyusefulforone-hand
operation.
Toactivatetheselecteditem,pressthe
center of thepad.
