General information
The Rubicon Online Energy Analyser and Logger is used to measure and monitor single phase
and three phase loads. The monitoring interface is the Smappee monitoring platform which
makes for easy setup and online monitoring. The device is ideal for sizing Photo Voltaic
systems, initial power quality studies and fault finding. The device can monitor up to 9 x three
phase feeders and 28 x single phase feeders / circuits.

Setup Procedure
The setup procedure is relatively simple and can be done by almost any qualified electrician
or engineer. Please ensure that local safety regulations are met when installing the meter.
The device can be set up in two ways
•Connection via Wi-Fi
•Connection via the GPRS
The setup procedure is subdivided into
1) Physical connection
2) Connection via Wi-Fi or GPRS
3) Load Configuration
Physical connection for three phase star connection
An example of the physical connection of the Energy Logger is shown below.
(L1, L2, L3 and N)
It is important that the direction of the CTs are in the direction of the electricity flow.

Connecting the measurement probes to the analyser is shown below. The three Rogowski
coils are connected to the CT Hub (L1 = A, L2 = B, L3 = C). The CT hub is connected using the
grey plug point as shown below. The voltage clamps are connected to the indicated L1, L2, L3
and N plugs. The Antenna is connected as shown on the left hand side of the picture.
Your Smappee mobile device is now successfully physically connected. The unit should be
on, with a light showing on the front panel (this can be any colour).
The next step is to configure the device.

Configuring the unit via Wi-Fi
The unit can be configured using the inbuilt Wi-Fi functionality. The first step is to reset the
unit via the reset pin. This can be done by sticking in a small wire into the reset hole and
pressing and holding the button for at least 45 seconds.
Very important when holding the reset button: If the light is green, it will then turn purple,
then yellow, then off then blue, then off, then blue continues. The unit will go through a reset
procedure where it will then after around 15 seconds start flashing blue. The unit is then
ready.
The next step is to download the Smappee app ( ) from the app store. Go to settings and
select Smappee monitors. Select infinity modules and select Smappee Genius. From here
select start installation.
Follow the steps on the installation procedure, which will be to scan the QR code – which can
be found on the Smappee unit. Continuing the process, you will need to connect to the
Smappee itself. Once connected, the steps on the app can be followed to connect to an
appropriate network as shown below.
Once completed a green light on the unit should show, indicating that the unit is connected.

Configuring the unit via GPRS
The unit can be configured using the inbuilt GPRS functionality. The first step is to reset the
unit via the reset pin. This can be done by sticking in a small wire in the reset hole and pressing
/ holding the button for at least 45 seconds.
Very important when holding the reset button: If the light is green, it will then turn purple,
then yellow, then off then blue, then off, then blue continues. The unit will go through a reset
procedure where it will then after around 15 seconds start flashing blue. The unit is then
ready.
The unit uses a normal sim card which is inserted at the GPRS port as shown in the picture
below.

It is important to use the external antenna as the unit will have better connection. It is also
important that the button be pressed to activate the GPRS module as shown below.
The GPRS lights should flicker, where the red lights indicate the signal strength.
The unit should now show a green light automatically showing that it is connected.

Load configuration
It is now important to configure the loads on the device. The first step is to define the loads
under the app settings, your Smappee monitors and load configuration. Next, add the
maximum current, which can be found on the breaker that is being measured.
If the physical connection is L1, L2, L3 and N – then the configuration is a star configuration.
The breaker input is shown below.
Following the steps, next it will ask for the for the type of CT connected to the CT Hub. In this
case use the RSCT 400, which has been used in the physical configuration.

www.rubiconsa.com
This process should be followed for all three loads as shown below.
The next step is to verify that the loads are being recorded. This can be seen by going into live
metering on the home screen. The following display should show. Please note the polarity of
the loads, as this will indicate if the CTs are installed in the correct orientation.
The Smappee online configuration is now complete.
Data can now be accessed online via the Smappee portal.
