SAFETY INFORMATION
Please read this information before using your radio. Failure
to do so could result in personal injury, death, and/or damage
to your radio, accessories and/or other property.
Batteries & Chargers Warning
This equipment contains a Lithium-ion battery pack.
Do not short-circuit the battery pack.
Do not charge the Lithium-ion battery pack used in this
equipment in any other charger.
Lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of properly.
The Lithium-ion battery pack contained in this
equipment may explode if disposed of in a fire.
Use of accessories not recommended may result in risk
of fire, electric shock or injury.
To reduce risk of fire, electric shock or injury, do not
operate the charger if it has been broken or damaged in
any way. Take it to a qualified service representative.
Do not disassemble the charger, it is not repairable and
replacement parts are not available. Disassembly of the
charger may result in risk of electric shock or fire.
Turn the radio OFF when charging battery.
The charger is not suitable for outdoor use. Use only in
dry locations/conditions.
Information on Safe Operation
Radio Antenna Warning
Do not use any portable radio that has a damaged antenna. If
a damaged antenna comes into contact with the skin, a minor
burn may result.
Unauthorized antennas, modifications, or attachments could

damage the radio and violate compliance. Do not change or
modify the antenna.
Do not hold the antenna when the radio is ‘in use’.
Holding the antenna reduces talk range and may cause bodily
harm.
Safety and General Use whilst in a vehicle
Check the laws and regulations regarding the use of two way
radios in the area where you drive. Always obey them.
1 - For vehicles fitted with air bags
Do not place your radio in the area over an air bag or in the air
bag deployment area.
Air bags inflate with great force. If a radio is placed in the air
bag deployment area and the air bag inflates, the radio may
be propelled with great force and cause serious injury to the
occupants of the vehicle.
2 - Potentially Explosive Atmospheres
Turn your radio OFF prior to entering any area with a
potentially explosive atmosphere.
Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fire resulting
in injury or even death.
Note: The areas with potentially explosive atmospheres are
often, but not always clearly marked. They include fueling
areas such as below decks on boats, fuel or chemical transfer
or storage facilities, area where the air contains chemicals or
particles, such as grain, dust or metal powders, and any other
area where you would normally be advised to turn off your
vehicle engine.
3 - Blasting Caps and Areas
To avoid possible interference with blasting operations, turn
off your radio when you are near electrical blasting caps or in
a “blasting area” or in areas posted: “Turn off two-way radio”.
Obey all signs and instructions.
2

Exposure to Radio Frequency Energy
To assure optimal radio performance and make sure human
exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic energy is within
the guidelines set out in the above standards always adhere
to the following procedures.
Transmit and Receive Procedure:
The two-way radio contains a transmitter and a receiver. To
control your exposure and ensure compliance with the
general population/uncontrolled environment exposure
limits, always adhere to the following procedure:
Transmit no more than 50% of the time.
To transmit (talk), press the Push to Talk (PTT) button.
To receive calls, release the PTT button.
Transmitting 50% of the time, or less, is important because
the radio generates measurable RF energy exposure only
when transmitting (in terms of measuring standards
compliance). Always hold the radio approximately 5 cm in
front of your mouth with the antenna pointing away from
your head.
Radio Operation and EME Exposure
If you wear a radio on your body when transmitting always fit
the radio on the supplied belt clip. Always ensure the radio
and its antenna is at least 5 cm from your body when
transmitting.
Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility
Nearly every electronic device is susceptible to
electromagnetic interference (EMI). To avoid the possibility of
electromagnetic interference and/or compatibility conflicts,
turn off your radio in any location where posted notices
instruct you to do so such as health care facilities.
1 - Aircraft
3

When instructed to do so, turn your radio OFF when on board
an aircraft.
Any use of a radio must be in accordance with applicable
regulations per airline crew instructions.
2 - Medical Devices - Pacemakers
The advanced Medical Technology Association recommends
that a minimum separation of 6 inches (15 cm) be maintained
between a handheld wireless radio and a pacemaker. These
recommendations are consistent with the independent
research by and recommendations of the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration.
Persons with pacemakers should:
Always keep the radio more than 6 inches (15 cm) from
their pacemaker when the radio is turned ON.
Do not carry the radio in the breast pocket.
Use the ear opposite the pacemaker to minimize the
potential for interference.
Turn the radio OFF immediately if there is any reason to
suspect that interference is taking place.
3 - Medical Devices – Hearing Aids
Some radios may interfere with some hearing aids. In the
event of such interference, you may want to consult your
hearing aid manufacturer to discuss alternatives.
4 - Other Medical Devices
If you use any other personal medical device, consult the
manufacturer of your device to determine if it is adequately
shielded from RF energy.
Your physician may be able to assist you in obtaining this
information.

User Safety Instructions
1. NEVER hold the radio so that the antenna is very close to,
or touching exposed parts of the body, especially the face or
eyes, while transmitting. The radio will perform best if the
microphone is 2 – 4 inches (5 – 10 cm) away from the lips and
the radio is vertical.
2. NEVER operate the radio with a headset or other audio
accessories at high volume levels.
3. NEVER short the terminals of the battery pack.
4. DO NOT push the PTT button when not actually desiring to
transmit.

in water. The radio construction is water resistant, not
waterproof.
8. The use of non-supplied battery packs/chargers may impair
radio performance and invalidate the warranty.
9. Changes or modifications to your radio not expressly
approved could void your authority to operate the radio
under laws and regulations.
10. Never use your radio outdoors during a thunderstorm.
11. Keep the radio out of reach of babies and your children.

Talk Range
S446 radio has been designed to maximize performance and
improve transmission range in the field. It is recommended
13

that you do not use the radios closer than 2 meters apart, to
avoid interference.
Talk range depends on the terrain. It will be affected by
concrete structures, heavy foliage and by operating radios
indoors or in vehicles.
Optimal range occurs in flat, open areas with up to 8 km of
coverage. Medium range occurs when building and trees are
in the way. Minimal range occurs when dense foliage and
mountains obstruct the communication path.
To establish a proper two-way communication, the channel,
frequency and CTCSS/DCS privacy code must be the same on
both radios. This depends on the stored profile that has been
preprogrammed on the radio:
1. Channel: current channel that the radio is using.
2. Frequency: the frequency the radio uses to transmit and
receive.
3. CTCSS/DCS privacy codes: these codes help minimize
interference by providing a choice of code combinations.
Other Operations
Monitor
It is important to monitor for traffic before transmitting to
avoid ‘talking over’ someone who is already transmitting.
To monitor, short press the side button P1 to temporarily
open the Squelch. It is using for listening to signals that are
too weak to keep the Squelch permanently opened. To
release, press P1 button again. Once channel traffic has
cleared, proceed with your call by pressing the PTT button.
Notes:
1 – To listen to all activity on a current channel, short press the
P1 to set the squelch to OFF.
2 – The default feature of side button P1 is set to ‘Monitor’.
14

Scan
Scan allows you to monitor other channels to detect
conversations. When the radio detects a transmission, it stops
scanning and goes to the active channel. This allows you to
listen and talk to people in that channel without having to
change channel manually. If there are transmissions on
another channel, you will not hear that activity once the radio
has stopped scanning. Once the activity on transmitting
channels stops, the radio waits for 5 seconds before resuming
scan again.
To start scanning, short press the P2 button (The default
setting of side button P2 is ‘Scan/ Temporary Delete’).
To stop scanning, short press the P2 button again.
By pressing the PTT button while the radio is scanning,
the radio will transmit on the channel which was
previously selected before Scan is activated. If no
transmission occurs within 5 seconds, scanning will
resume.
Note: Whenever the radio is set to Scan, the LED indicator
blinks a green heartbeat.
Nuisance Channel Temporary Delete
Nuisance Channel Temporary Delete feature allows you to
temporarily remove channels from the scan cycle. This feature
is useful when irrelevant conversations on a ‘nuisance’
channel ties up the radio’s scanning feature.
To delete a channel from the scan cycle:
Start scanning by short pressing the P2 button.
Wait until the radio stops at the channel you wish to
eliminate. Long press the P2 button for 2 seconds to
delete it.
The channel will not be scanned again until you exit this
Scan mode by short pressing the P2 button again or by
turning the radio OFF and back ON.
15

Hands-Free Use without accessories/iVOX
Enable iVOX mode by pressing the PTT button while
turning the radio ON.
The LED indicator will blink double yellow heartbeat.
There is a short delay between the time when you start
talking and when the radio transmits.
Channel Annunciation
When changing the channel, the radio will announce the
newly selected channel number. Likewise, the radio will
announce the current channel after you turn the radio ON.
Press the P1 button while turning the radio ON and
enable/disable channel annunciation. The default setting is
set to ON.
Radio to Radio Cloning
S446 allows you to clone radio function settings and channels
data from one source radio to a target radio by using a
cloning cable (optional accessory).
1. Before starting the cloning process, make sure you have
a fully charged battery on each of the radios.
2. Turn the source radio OFF.
