developed accessory for our practice-proven microbiological air sampler, you have
selected a product which is manufactured according to the highest quality German
electrical and precision engineering standards.
We are sure that it will provide you with satisfying and trouble-free service
for many years.

or assistance on installation or on your specific applications.
Goettingen, 2009
4 Preface

2. Introduction
The MD8 airscan Remote Control 1ZE---0003 is an interface which allows the user
to carry out automatic air sampling with the MD8 airscan air sampler at several
collection locations in succession in a process line via a PLC.
These operating instructions are mainly intended to provide a technical description
on how the Remote Control is to be connected to and operated with an available
process logic controller (PLC).
Therefore, a complete function test of the Remote Control is only possible in
conjunction with a PLC and a connected MD8 airscan. These Operating Instructions
have been primarily written for technicians.
As these air monitoring systems are customer-specific solutions, further details
concerning installation of this equipment must be discussed on site with the user
and the equipment needs to be installed together with the user.
Introduction 5

3. Safety precautions
1. Switch off the instrument before wiring the MD8 airscan Remote-Control
1ZE---0003.
2. Disconnect the instrument from the electrical supply (unplug it) before changing
the fine fuse.
3. Only switch on the MD8 airscan Remote Control when it is connected to an
MD8 airscan air sampling instrument and a PLC unit.
4. Any use other than for the intended purpose, or improper operation, voids any
and all manufacturer warranties.
5. Before starting the system, make sure that the available electrical supply matches
that which is printed on the label on the bottom of the instrument.
6. Do not open or make changes to the instrument. Damage resulting from such
actions or changes are not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
6 Safety precautions

4. EEC – Declaration of Conformity
We hereby declare that this version of the MD8 airscan Remote Control
(order number 1ZE---0003) conforms, in its design and function, to the
requirements of the following standards:
EN 50081-1
EN 55022 Cl. B
EN 50082-2
EN 61000-4-2, -3, -4, -5, -6,-11
EN 50204
As of: Oct. 2000
This declaration becomes invalid if unauthorized changes have been made to the
instrument.

5. Unpacking and checking the
equipment supplied
Sartorius Stedim Biotech products are packaged very carefully. However, despite this,
damage may still occur during transport, so please check the equipment supplied for
any damage while unpacking it, and at the same time check each piece against the
following list, to ensure that everything has been correctly delivered and that nothing
is left in the packaging:
– MD 8 airscan Remote Control (check the voltage)
– a) Line cord (country specific) (see Fig.1)
– b) Connecting cable to the MD8 airscan
– c) Connecting cable to the PLC

6. Description of the MD8 airscan
Remote Control
The MD8 airscan Remote Control has a metal housing which can be wiped down and
disinfected using common cleaning agents and disinfectants.
The operating elements (on|off switch (a) and status indicators (b)) for the various
instrument functions, which are described in the section on how the Remote Control
functions, are located on the front of the instrument (Fig. 2).
The power supply connection (a), fuse (0.5 A T, (b) ) and connections for the PLC (c)
and for an MD8 airscan air sampler (d) are on the back of the instrument (Fig.3).

8. Switching on the Remote Control
Use the on|off switch on the front of the instrument to switch the MD8 airscan
Remote Control on (Fig. 2 (a) + Fig. 4 (a)). The switch lights up red to show that
the instrument is on, and at the same time, the instrument carries out a self test in
which it checks its functions. The status indicator LED flashes during this test.
When the test is successfully completed, and provided the instrument is connected to
an MD8 airscan air sampler, the green LED stays on ("on") (Fig. 4, b). This shows that
the instrument is ready for use and the measurement (air sampling) can be started.
Should the test not be successfully completed, the green LED ("on") is not lit. Possible
cause of the fault: Remote Control and MD8 airscan are not connected.

9. How the Remote Control functions
A measurement can be started when the green LED ("on") of the MD8 airscan Remote
Control is on.
To start the measurement procedure, the PLC control must trigger a relay with
a closing contact for about 100 ms.
The closing contact of the relay must be connected at pins 3 and 4, potential free.
Pin 3 Pin 4
As soon as the MD8 airscan air sampler and the MD8 airscan Remote Control are sup-
plied with a 220 V operating voltage and switched on, the measurement procedure
can be started. At the end of a measurement, provided no fault has occurred, a signal
is output at pin 5 (signal: Ready = yellow LED (Fig. 4, c) ).
After the measurement procedure has been initiated with the start pulse,
a 24 V return signal is output at pin 2 (during the complete measuring phase).
After the measuring phase, the instrument must be reset to start again by an
acknowledgement signal at pin 1(signal: Running = yellow LED, (Fig. 4, d))
If the measurement was not successfully carried out, a fault is reported by a flashing
signal which alternates between pin 2 and pin 5, and by a 24 V return signal at pin 6.
In this case, the instrument can be reset to start again by a double acknowledgement
at pin 1 (signal: Error = red LED, (Fig. 4,e) ).
Pin 1 (Enter|Acknowledge) must be externally switched to the MINUS of the supply
voltage.
Pin 7 is connected to the external supply voltage for the galvanic separated
outputs + 24 V =.
The PLC connecting plug
The signal plug is a midget round plug connector made by Binder.
