Intended Use
The stainless steel version of the
FCT01-X from Sartorius is an
intrinsically safe display and control
terminal approved for use in Category
2 and 3 hazardous areas/locations
as defined in Directive 94/9/EU
(Zones 1 and 2 as defined in DIN
EN60079-14, VDE 0165 Part 1).
It is equipped with a built-in analog/
digital converter for connecting
standard, commercially available
strain-gauge load cells and analog
weighing platforms, such as the IWA,
IU and IF Series platforms from
Sartorius. When choosing load cells
for use with your FCT01-X terminal,
make sure you observe the limits listed
in the EC type-approval certificate for
the terminal (included in this manual).
It is particularly important to determine
the temperature class of resistors in
load cells. Furthermore, Item 5.4 of
the EN50020 standard must be
strictly observed.
The FCT01-X lets you work with up to
3 application programs

These AC adapters or power supplies
may be connected only to an
electrical outlet (mains supply) (48 –
62 Hz) with at least 90 V and no
more than 264 V.
The FCT01-X meets the currently valid,
harmonized European standards in
compliance with CENELEC:
EN 50014: 1992
EN 50020: 1994
The flameproof AC adapter or power
supply is also in compliance with:
EN 50018: 1994
Install the FCT01-X and any accessory
equipment in accordance with
acknowledged technical regulations
and in compliance with the national
laws and safety regulations
applicable in your country.
Output
The FCT01-X has an interface port for
connecting
– a printer*
– a peripheral device
(such as a PC)*, or
– a universal remote control switch.

Information
Improper use or handling can result

your terminal. Keep these instructions
in a safe place.
The manufacturer shall not be held
liable for damage caused by failure
to observe this warning and safety
information or the instructions.
When you use electrical equipment
in installations and under ambient
conditions requiring higher safety
standards, you must comply with the
provisions specified in the applicable
regulations for installation in your
country.
Follow the instructions below to ensure
safe and trouble-free operation of your
FCT01-X terminal:
!Make sure that the voltage rating
printed on the AC adapter or
power supply is identical to your
local AC power rating. The
possibility of voltage fluctuation
must be taken into account.
!The FCT01-X and its accessories
are IP65-protected. Handle the
equipment with care as required
by the IP protection ratings. The
environment in which it is used
must also be protected.
Warning and Safety
Information
!Protect the AC adapter or power
supply as required by the IP65
standard (dust-tight and
washdown-resistant)
!The housing of the YPS02-X... AC
adapter or power supply is made
of AlMgSi and should be handled
accordingly
!Cabling: The casing on the
power cable is made of
– rubber (on models YPS02-Z...,
-XDR, -XKR, -XAS)
– PVC (on model YPS02-XGR)
All other cables connecting the
weighing equipment and
peripheral devices, as well as
the wiring inside the devices, are
cased in PVC materials. Do not
allow chemicals that corrode
these materials to come in
contact with these cables.
!Use only cabling and extensions
approved by Sartorius, as these
are made in accordance with the
restrictions on cable lengths
imposed by the capacitance and
inductivity values (see the attached
certificate of conformity) and the
requirements for electromagnetic
compatibility.
!The equipment may be operated
only in an ambient temperature
range between 0°C and +40°C
(+32°F to +104°F). Make sure
there is sufficient ventilation to
prevent heat from building up in
the equipment.
!The equipment must be used
indoors.
!Clean the equipment in
accordance with the instructions
(see the section entitled “Care and
Maintenance”).
!Avoid build-up of static electricity
on the dust cover and in glass
parts (see the section entitled
“Care and Maintenance”).
!Have the equipment inspected at
appropriate intervals for correct
functioning and safety by a trained
technician (for instance, inspection
of the cables for damage).

!When cleaning your FCT01-X
terminal, make sure that no liquid
enters the equipment housing; use
only a slightly moistened cloth for
cleaning the terminal.
!Using the FCT01-X in a network:
No more than 8 terminals may be
connected, using a YDI01 Zener
barrier, to the RS-485 interface
port.
!Make sure all operating
personnel are trained to
recognize malfunctions and
to take appropriate corrective
or preventive measures (such as
disconnecting the equipment from
power) as needed.
!The equipment meets the
requirements for electromagnetic
compatibility. Avoid interference
stronger than that allowed for in
the relevant standards (see also the
section entitled “Overview;
Declaration of Conformity” in the
operating instructions).
!If you use the equipment in
a hazardous area or location
outside Germany, you must comply
with the national electrical code
and applicable safety regulations
of your country.
Ask your local Sartorius office or
dealer for information on the legal
regulations applicable in your
country.
!The IWA, IU and IF Series
weighing platforms from Sartorius
are rated for use in conjunction
with the FCT01-X in Category 2
and 3 hazardous areas/locations
as defined in Directive 94/9/EU
(Zones 1 and 2 as defined in DIN
EN60079-14, VDE 0165 Part 1)
within the scope of the EC type
examination certificate for the
FCT01-X. These platforms meet
the specifications in Item 5.4 of
the EN 50020/1994 standard.
Sartorius AG has tested this
equipment and declares that when
used in conjunction with the
FCT01-X these platforms fulfill the
relevant requirements set forth for
equipment designated EEx ib IIC
T4 or II 2 G. This does not
necessarily apply to a platform that
is connected to other intrinsically
safe equipment.
Warning:
!The FCT01-X is sealed at the
factory to enable reliable
documentation that the intrinsically
safe electrical equipment is in
proper condition according to the
relevant regulations. The
equipment may be opened only
by authorized and trained service
personnel. The seal must be
removed to install a load cell.
This must be performed by a
service technician familiar with the
operation of electrical equipment
in hazardous areas/locations.
Any tampering with this equipment
by anyone other than authorized
personnel will result in forfeiture of
the approval for use in the stated
hazardous area/location and of
all claims under the manufacturer’s
warranty.

Storage and Shipping
Conditions
– Allowable storage temperature:
+5°C ...+40°C (+41 to +104 °F)
– The packaging has been designed
to ensure that the equipment
will not be damaged even
if it is dropped from a height of
80 centimeters (about 31inches).
– Do not expose the equipment to
extreme temperatures, moisture,
shocks or vibration.
Unpacking the Terminal
§After unpacking the terminal,
check it immediately for any visible
damage as a result of rough
handling during shipment.
$If you see any sign of damage,
proceed as directed in the chapter
entitled “Care and Maintenance,”
under the section on “Safety
Inspection.”
$It is a good idea to save the box
and all parts of the packaging until
you have successfully installed
your terminal. Only the original
packaging provides the best
protection for shipment.
$Before shipping the terminal,
unplug all connected cables to
prevent damage.
Warranty
Do not miss out on the benefits of our
full warranty. Please contact your
local Sartorius office or dealer for
further information. If available,
complete the warranty registration
card, indicating the date of
installation, and return the card to your
Sartorius office or dealer.
Equipment Supplied
The equipment supplied includes the
components listed below:
– FCT01-X with interface port
Installation
The FCT01-X terminal is designed
to provide reliable weighing results
under normal ambient conditions.
When choosing a location to set up
your terminal, observe the following
so that you will be able to work with
added speed and accuracy:
– Avoid placing the equipment in
close proximity to a heater or
otherwise exposing the equipment
to heat or direct sunlight
– Protect the equipment from drafts
that come from open windows or
doors
– Avoid exposing the equipment to
extreme vibrations during
weighing
– Protect the equipment from
aggressive chemical vapors
– Do not expose the equipment to
extreme moisture
Turn off the equipment when not
in use.
Conditioning the FCT01-X
Moisture in the air can condense
on the surfaces of a cold terminal
whenever it is brought into a
substantially warmer place. If you
transfer the terminal to a warmer area,
make sure to condition it for about 2
hours at room temperature, leaving
it unplugged from AC power.
Afterwards, if you keep the terminal
connected to AC power, the
continuous positive difference in
temperature between the inside of the
terminal and the outside will
practically rule out the effects of
moisture condensation.

Connecting the FCT01-X
Connecting the AC Adapter/Power Supply and the Weighing Platform
Note:
The equipment must be outside the hazardous area/location during this
procedure. Installation must be performed by a trained technician.
§Lay the terminal face down on a soft surface
§Remove the screws indicated by the arrows in the drawing at left
§Remove the front plate and stand the terminal upright on its feet
§Connecting the weighing platform cable to the terminal:
Note:
The FCT01-X is equipped with a cable gland. Use caution when working with
the cable gland.
!Maximum cable length between the FCT01-X and the weighing platform
is 150 m (cable designation: LiYCY6x0.52)
§Preparing and installing the cable:
– Remove the threaded cap from the cable gland and slide it over the end
of the cable.
– Remove a length of the casing from the end of the cable (see drawing).
The shielding (1) must have contact with the retainer clips (2).
Fold back about 3 to 4 mm of the shielding so that it goes over the O-ring
(see drawing).
Expose approximately 15 cm of the cable wires (3) for connection within
the terminal.
– Thread the cable through the cable gland.
– Make sure the shielding is in contact with the retainer clips.
– Tighten the cable gland.

Note:
Refer to the relevant operating instructions or service specifications for the wiring
assignments in the load cell or weighing instrument. Make sure to isolate any
unused wires.
To connect a load receptor that uses 4-wire technology, add a bridge to connect
terminals 1 and 2 and another to connect 5 and 6.
§Attaching the wires to the terminals:
– Expose approximately 1 cm of each wire end.
– Place the ferrules on the wire ends and fasten them.
– Slide the enclosed tubing over all the wires down to the cable gland, so that
no more than 5 cm of wire is free between the end of the tubing and the
terminal strip.
– Connect the wires in accordance with the wiring assignment chart.
§Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws in the terminal strip.
Note:
The bridge supply voltages are protected by 125mA fuses. To prevent the fuses
from reacting if wires are incorrectly connected, resistors between pin 1 and pin
6, between pin 1 and the housing and between pin 6 and the housing must
measure greater than 80 ohms. Low-ohm connections are also required
between pins 1 and 2 and between pins 5 and 6.

§Replace the screws and tighten them down (see drawing)
– Make sure no wires or cables are caught between the housing walls.
– Make sure a seals close tightly to preserve the IP protection.
Connecting the Terminal to AC Power
!Before putting the terminal into operation, make sure that the power cable
is correctly connected to the wall outlet (mains supply); it is especially
important to make sure the grounding cable is attached to the housing of the
AC adapter (power supply). All devices used must be connected to the
equipotential bonding conductor via the retainers provided on each device.
Installation must be carried out by a certified electrician in accordance with
the latest standard procedures.
!Before putting the equipment into operation for the first time, make sure that
the area of installation is not hazardous. If the equipment shows any signs
of malfunction as a result of damage during shipment (display remains blank,
no display backlighting even with a weight readout, weight value not
repeatable, readout does not stabilize, etc.), disconnect the equipment
from power and contact a Sartorius service technician.
!YPS02-X... Flameproof AC Adapter (Power Supply):
– Install both cables so that they are stationary
– Flexible cables with threaded fasteners are available on request
§Check the voltage rating and the plug design
– If they do not match the rating or standard you use, contact your Sartorius
office or dealer
!Use only original Sartorius AC adapters or power supplies:
– YPS02-Z... (for use outside a hazardous area/location)
– YPS02-X... (for use within a hazardous area/location)
To operate the terminal in a Zone 1 hazardous area or a Class I, Division 1
hazardous (classified) location, please comply with the following:
– Currently valid standards and regulations for installation of explosion-
protected equipment in such areas
!Within the hazardous area/location, the following devices must be
connected to a main grounding (earthing) terminal:
– FCT01-X terminal
– Weighing platform/load cell
– AC adapter (power supply)
– Zener barrier

§Plug the female connector of the AC adapter (power supply) cable into
the male socket on the terminal. Secure this connection by tightening the
knurled collar.
!Install the power cable so that it is protected from damage.
$The intrinsically safe connector for the power cable (primary) on YPS02-X...
AC adapters (power supplies) is not part of the standard equipment supplied
(exposed wire ends).
!Use the threaded cap supplied to close a socket that is not in use.
If all sockets are in use, keep the threaded cap in a safe place in case
it is required in future.
Grounding (Earthing) Using an Equipotential Bonding Conductor
§Connect the terminal using a grounding cable (equipotential bonding
conductor; not supplied) to the main grounding terminal.
In addition, the metal housing of the AC adapter (power supply)
is grounded by the protective grounding conductor of the power cable.
The metal housing of the terminal is connected to the braided shield of the
AC adapter (power supply) connected to the terminal.
Connecting Electronic Peripheral Devices
§Make absolutely sure to unplug the FCT01-X from AC power
before you connect or disconnect a peripheral device (printer or PC)
to or from the interface port.
