Important Notes:
CAUTION! Disconnect power cord to the expansion enclosure when
servicing or installing cards.
CAUTION! Disconnect power cord to the host system before installing
the host card.
For optimum cooling airflow, operate the Expansion Unit with the cover
on. Be sure to cover all unused connector cutouts on the backpanel.
Static electricity can damage integrated circuit components and cards.
Make sure you use proper ESD handling procedures (refer to EIA-625,
ESD Association Handbook or MIL-HDBK-263) while working with
cards and components.
Avoid touching the gold-plated card edge connectors.

Model CA31 Expansion Unit
Expansion Unit Functions 1
Chapter 1: Expansion Unit Functions
1.0 Overview
The Model CA31 seven-slot PCI Expansion Unit expands PCI computer
capabilities by transparently increasing the number of usable PCI slots
available to the host system. The Expansion Unit provides a low latency,
high-throughput path to seven 32-bit PCI slots in a mini-tower chassis. Model
CA31 provides two short form +5V and five long form +5V PCI card slots;
the long form slots can be filled by either long or short form PCI cards. Each
slot is master capable, allowing peer-to-peer communication within the PCI
environment. The host system acts as the host processor and the PCI
Expansion Unit appears as a downstream hierarchical bus.
An Expansion Unit consists of a host card, an enclosure, and an
interconnecting cable. The enclosure includes: a seven-slot backplane with
integrated controller, a 300W power supply, and the UL-approved EMI-
shielded chassis with accompanying power cord. The seven-slot backplane
provides a single independent seven-slot PCI bus. Operation of the host bus
and the expansion bus is independent allowing maximum performance;
consequently, multimedia and other devices can communicate with each other
without slowing down the host system.
The Model CA31 mini-tower chassis is style and color compatible with
personal computer systems. Operation at nominal input line voltages of 115V
or 230V is controlled by a switch on the rear panel.

2Expansion Unit Functions
1.1 Technical Information And Specifications
1.1.1 Architecture
The host card installs in the host chassis. The host chassis connects via cable
to the integrated controller in the backplane of the enclosure creating an
Expansion Unit that allows data exchange between the two systems. The
Expansion Unit uses a multi-level PCI-to-PCI bridge architecture. From the
host's point of view, all expansion enclosure slots reside behind PCI-to-PCI
bridges. All seven PCI slots in the expansion enclosure reside on the same
PCI bus.
Memory address space for devices in the expansion enclosure may be
configured as either prefetchable or non-prefetchable. In prefetchable address
space, zero wait state memory burst operations are supported within the
expansion enclosure and across the Expansion Unit cable with prefetch read
and posted write.
1.1.2 Arbitration
The PCI bus in the expansion enclosure has an arbitration controller. Round-
Robin (RRS) arbitration is provided. Alternately, host system bus masters can
access targets in the expansion enclosure and expansion enclosure masters can
access targets on the host system.
1.1.3 Case Dimensions
9.5 x 14.5 x 17.25 (inches)
24.13 x 36.83 x 43.82 (cm)

1.1.4 Power Requirements
The backplane requires 0.5A at 5V maximum DC power from the expansion
chassis.
The host card requires 0.5A at 5V maximum DC power from the host chassis.
1.1.5 Power Supplies
AC input - 115V or 230V (switchable).
Input frequency - 47 - 63 Hz.
Input current - 8A/115VAC;
4A/230VAC.
Maximum DC loads – 14A @ +3.3V
30A @ +5V 0.5A @ -5V
8A @ +12V 0.5A @ -12V
160W combined 3.3V and 5V maximum watts
Power supply loading and test configurations used
for UL testing are documented in the UL report.

2.2 Backplane And Integrated Controller
The manufacturing default settings should not be changed except as noted
below.
Optional power ATX control is provided for the mini-tower chassis. This
chassis uses a momentary push button switch to switch power on and off
similar to the power switch used for ATX computers. When incoming power
is interrupted, the Expansion Unit will remain powered down until the power
switch is pushed. You may find this objectionable if the Expansion Unit
power is controlled by an external power strip. Moving the ATX Power
jumper from local to remote causes the Expansion Unit to power up each time
incoming power is present, and disables the power push button.

2.3 PCI Host Card
The host card installs in the host computer system. One end of the Expansion
Unit cable plugs into the host card.
The manufacturing default jumper settings should not be changed.
